Fried Durian and 10 Fastastic Food for Over 50s

"Goreng Durian”  looks like goreng pisang at $1.60 at
piece,  – at Old Airport Road Hawker centre  #1-05

Comment: Fantastic better than normal durain , as it feels hot , 10
times better than apple pie, I think if someone  MacDurian this
and be the latest hot cake in town like Papa Roti .

Anyone knows how bad or how good durain is ?

10 Fantastic Foods that you should not miss  for Over-50s

Eating
the right food can hold back the years and keep us feeling and looking
good. As we get older, we need less food, but more nutrients to stay
healthy. Here are vitamin-rich options to include in your daily diet.

1. Brown rice. A lot of people shy away from carbohydrates because of
their reputation for causing weight gain, but they’re crucial for
maintaining energy levels. Stick to whole grains such as brown rice and
bread, and whole-grain cereals, which provide plenty of fiber. This can
help to lower cholesterol levels, reduce your risk of heart disease,
colon cancer, gall stones, diabetes and obesity, and is vital for
keeping your bowels healthy — they can become less active as we age.

2. Eggs. They’ve had a lot of bad press, but eggs are good for you —
and now it seems there’s no need to avoid them, even if you’re worried
about cholesterol. They’re a great source of protein and lutein, which
protects your eyes against degeneration and cataracts. Studies suggest
they can help to prevent blood clots, reducing the risk of heart attack
and stroke — a recent study found that eating six eggs a week lowered
the risk of breast cancer by 44 percent. Nutritionists now say having
one or two eggs a day doesn’t cause a noticeable increase in
cholesterol levels because the body makes its own from the saturated
fats in our diet and not from cholesterol-rich foods like eggs.

3. Milk. As we age, our calcium requirements rise, so it’s important to
include lots of calcium-rich foods in your diet every day. Low-fat
cow’s milk has loads of health benefits. It’s packed full of calcium,
needed for strong, healthy bones and for preventing osteoporosis. It
also helps prevent the bone loss caused by the menopause or rheumatoid
arthritis. Drink two glasses of low-fat milk every day, or include
low-fat yogurts and calcium-enriched fruit juices in your diet.

4. Spinach. Popeye had the right idea fueling up on this superfood.
Calorie for calorie, it holds more nutrients than any other food. It’s
a particularly good source of iron; vitamins C, A and K; and
antioxidants which may help to protect against heart attack and stroke.
Spinach can help protect you from colon cancer, osteoporosis and
arthritis. Like eggs, it’s packed with lutein — great for your eyes —
so try a breakfast of steamed spinach with poached eggs.

5. Bananas. Just one of these yellow fruits provides a whopping 467
milligrams of potassium, which is important for keeping your muscles
strong and healthy (particularly the heart) and even helps reduce high
blood pressure. Bananas are a good source of fiber, which can help
prevent heart disease, and they have an antacid effect, so they’re
useful for treating heartburn.

Add chopped bananas to oatmeal for a vitamin-rich breakfast, or blend
them with a bit of low-fat yogurt or milk and some fruit juice for a
power-packed smoothie. Other good sources of potassium are lentils,
sardines and dried apricots.

6. Chicken. Not only is it one of the most versatile meats, it’s one of
the healthiest. Stick to the breast, which has the least fat, and
remove the skin.

Chicken is packed with protein and helps prevent bone loss. It’s also a
good source of selenium, an important nutrient in preventing cancer,
and B vitamins, which help to increase energy and boost your brain
powers.

7. Salmon. It’s rich in omega-3 fats, which reduce cholesterol levels,
protect against some cancers, and prevent blood clotting. Research has
also shown that salmon can help ease depression and prevent memory
loss. It’s a good source of niacin, which has been shown to provide
protection against Alzheimer’s.

Aim to eat fresh or tinned salmon at least three times a week. Walnuts are another great source of omega-3s.

8. Blueberries. These little marvels are very low in calories, but
bursting with nutrients. They are packed with antioxidants that help to
prevent cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, stomach
ulcers, heart disease and cancer.

They have also been shown to help lessen brain damage after a stroke
and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract — helping to tackle
constipation and diarrhea.

9. Herbs. As we age, our sense of taste declines, and it’s all too easy
to chuck in tons of salt to make food more appetizing. But as salt
increases your blood pressure, it’s healthier to jazz up your meals by
adding herbs and spices. Fresh herbs tend to taste stronger, but for
convenience, keep a selection of dried herbs in the cupboard.

10. Garlic. For such a small vegetable, garlic has huge benefits. It
helps prevent cancers, heart disease and reduces the risk of stroke. It
also has an anti-inflammatory effect, helping to reduce pain and
swelling caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also
help those with diabetes. If you can’t stand the flavor, try taking
taste-free garlic capsules.

Four Things to Avoid:

    * Sweets: These will make you pile on the pounds as
they provide lots of calories, but no nutrients. Limit your sugar
intake, too.
    * Salt: Your sense of taste diminishes as you age,
but avoid adding salt as it increases blood pressure. And look out for
"hidden" salt in gravy mixes, etc.
    * Alcohol: Have no more than two small drinks a day
— booze is full of calories and can stop your body absorbing vitamins.
Red wine is a healthier choice.
    * Saturated fats: These are found in meats, cheese,
chicken skin and ice cream. They increase your cholesterol levels and
make you put on weight.

Pigs’ trotters: the new superfood

Pigs’ feet: the new superfood -Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 03/03/2008

As Britain’s spending on cosmetic surgery soars, Fiona MacDonald Smith suggests it’s time that we chopped and changed our diet instead

The latest anti-ageing food? Pigs’ trotters. That’s right, you heard it here first. In New York, the most talked-about new opening of the past couple of months has been a Japanese restaurant called Hakata Tonton, where 33 out of the 39 dishes contain pigs’ feet.

Young and older face
Isn’t there a cheaper solution to cosmetic surgery?

The reason for this, according to its owner, Himi Okajima, is that they are rich in collagen, the protein responsible for skin and muscle tone, more recognisable to beauty addicts in the form of face creams and fillers.

“Collagen helps your body retain moisture,” says Okajima, who has introduced a chain of restaurants specialising in collagen cuisine in Japan. “Your hair and skin will look better, but it’s not just for looking beautiful now. If you begin eating collagen in your thirties, you will look younger in your forties.”

Maybe this sounds a little improbable (“It’s news to me,” sniffs Lisa Miles of the British Nutrition Foundation. “I’ve certainly never heard of eating collagen”) but Okajima believes he is on to something. Figures published last month show that British spending on cosmetic surgery is the highest in Europe, hitting nearly £500 million in 2006, four times more than in 2001.

Isn’t there a cheaper solution? (Mary is this not one of your favorite diet ? )

Project Proposal : Supply, Delivery, Installation and Commissioning of Two(2) Weather and Two(2) Air Quality Monitoring Stations in Jambi, Indonesia. Calling Entity National Environment Agency

If there is a company that is willing to finance this project and provide technical expertise, can SHC form a management pool of people to run, co-ordinate the phases from the construction face to the operational phase for 2 years in Indonesia ?

Investment group and weekly coffee talk ?

Hi all SHC members, I have read that in USA it is common for retirees or housewifes to form a group, so that they can get their hands into Investing in Stocks, Futures, with the experts in the club providing good and free advice resulting in good returns. As i have just starting getting into investiing in stocks , futures, CFDs ,etc, i just wonder if we can form such a group , so that those who may be Experts can share their expertise and experience  to help new comers like me.  So far , i have learned quite a lot from people like Dave and Andrew and i think they could be others out there who may have just as much as expertise or more and can help us all.  At the same time,  some who like me, who are just starting out,  will defintely benefit by learning from these people.  Of course’ everything is on a good will basis, no guarantees and everyone is responsible for their own investments, but talk is free, and knowing more is defintely better in any investments.  At the end of day, it is also a good way to get to know more SHC members and have something current and of strong interests to talk about.  Ronald , 91519301 ( SMS if possible)

Robotics – Singapore Robo Grand Prix anyone ?

Hi all SHC ,

Just wondering if there are any Robotics enthusiasts amongst us ? I know Andrew ,Ronald Lee have extensive experience in software Engineering, so looking if we can start something here .  In preparation for the Singapore Robo Grand Prix later this year, the Science Center has organised a talk and Pre-season challenged for Novice and is open to the public from the 6-8 Sept, at Temasek Poly, a 2 day event from 9am to 5pm. Contact 67805426. Also there is free Course to help those interested in developing applications for Windows Mobile 5.0 applications using Visual Studio 2005 on the 5th Sept at Nanyang Poly, 9am-5pm. A every comprehensive course inlcudes basic theory and practice and  hands-on . Both are free, really unbelieable in Singapore ? .  Contact me if anyone is interested and we can go together, enjoy this hobby for fun for a start, and see if we can start something in future . Ronald Wi – 91519301 (SMS if possible).

Cafe at Holland Village

Hi All SHC business minded persons,

There is an internet cafe ,at a good location in Holland Village on offer at $45k negotiable, complete with all current operating internet cafe stuff.etc, 20 computers.  The current rent is $4k, which is good.  Just wondering what to make of this ? Any feedback , insight , or ideas welcome for consideration or just good discussion.  If anyone is considering to find partners to run at as a small cafe, as well as an internet, & games cafe, etc. all suggestions and willing partners welcome.  Maybe a special Beer Brewing corner may be workable too. ? or turn it into a small pub , size is about 1200 sg ft.   However the current lease is for 14 months at this price , good or bad, depends on what you want or can make it with it.

Cheers, Ronald Wi

Personal Car for Hire

Hi SHC,

Owning a car is expensive and also especially if it is not used much. As i am retired and am not in need of the car most of the time.  I am offering my car for rent to SHC members and also the service of easy pickup and return around Central MRTs.

I also found out that it is perfectly legal to do, as LTA encourages such a private ownership scheme to rent out their vehicle during weekends.

If anyone has such a need call me or SMS me, and we can discuss the arrangements.

By the way , my car is a Sunny Auto 1.5, Year 1998, so it is about 7.5 years old and is running great.

Cheers, Ronald Wi

Eco Travel to Europe Anyone ?

Hi SHC members,

I am planning to make trip to UK, Europe not only to sight see , but also on a Eco-village discovery tour. Such Eco-villages are under  GEN ( Global EcoVillage Network) and are endorsed by United Nations. They have all- year volunteer programmes and also conduct courses on various topics on Eco-village Matters  that are also endorsed by UN. Overall, i would say, the intention is to travel not to just the towns but also the countryside, and  learn from people of different cultures, on the Main issue of living and doing something to care for the environment that is around us. Singapore, in many ways is quite pro-active in being ECO- friendly , from the ways we recycle water,  to be self sufficient and the concept of making a greener Singapore with rooftop gardens, etc.  A very few like Ivy Singh-Lim has even started Singapore’s most well-known back-to-nature countryside living and have expanded into the farming business “Bolloywood veggies”.

Right now, for me it is just to travel and visit  other countries that i have not been to, while i am still strong and healthy. There are many such Eco-villages all round Europe, England, Italy, Spain ,  that have all-year round volunteer programmes,, that you will probably take a life time to visit. Right now,i t is almost the end of summer so it is the right time to visit Europe and then maybe Australia and New Zealand after Dec.   Estimated cost, will be the air tickets, train tickets, and basic meals cost, and hoping to save as much on hotesl by getting free lodging volunteering in the Eco-villages.  I think it is better than staying at some expensive hotel for a night, this way you can meet friends and  stay longer with them.  You get to see and experienced a lot more and you can learn a lot more, of the food, culture , ideas  and at the same time  leaving a healthy life in the countryside.   I believe the Eco-village concept should start with our own body first.  The first village is our body ( it holds our mind and soul )  that we have to keep healthy to serve us for the many years down the road.  So if anyone of you, is free, after retiring and feel you are healthy and strong enough to take on such travel, do consider, to join me.  You are invited to join me at any stage and at any place while i am on the move in Europe,as i may be there for 3 months or more.

Cheers, maybe i will learn how to make heathlier Sheppard’s Bread by then.

Trip to Malacca/Port Dickson

Malacca Resort/Eco Village Tour 10/8 – 12/8 (optional day 13/8) Day 1 – Eco Village ( near Palm Resort Golf Course, 2nd Link), Malacca Ayer Keroh Resort, stay at Hotel Puri (original Nyonya House converted into a 4 star Heritage Hotel ) Night eating in Malacca Town Hawker Centre ( Malacca Newton Centre).

Day 2 – Coasting along Tanjong Kling, Tanjong Bidara and arriving in Port Dickson, staying at the “out in the Beach Hotel” with glass bottoms.  Night enjoy local food along the Beach and Quiet evening.

Day 3 – Visit Port Klang and (Malaysia version of Sentosa Cove and Beach Homes ) Phase 1 completed and PHase 2 for booking.  Expressway back to Spore and stopover at A Formosa Resort for Lunch and evening stop over at JB for cheap bargains and dinner.

Welcome to all SHC members to join in, or form their own Car pool groups to join in. Right now i am driving with Dave and Andrew joining me.  Call me or sms me for more info or details 91519301.
