SilverHairsClub facebook – SHC group administrators

Dear members,

Not that I had lost my memories, but recently I vaguely remembered we had a SilverHairsClub facebook page.  It is callee SHC group.

Some years ago, i had asked Andrew Koh to initiate and administer the SilverHairsClub Facebook.  Together with Douglas Chan, both of them have brought our facebook page to what it is today.  In fact, I had almost forgotten about it until recently.

Andrew Koh and Douglas Chan both joined SHC in Jan 2007.  I am glad to have Andrew be the co-administrator for our Facebook.  Facebook has a different social media structure; It is open to eligible SHC members.  If you wish to join the Facebook, please register your interest here.  The administrators will pick up from here.

Relaxation on the rule on Direct Selling

One of SilverHairsClub rules is No Direct Selling activities. The Club has now decided to relax this ruling, in support of active members interests and hobbies.

2. Active Club Members may also offer chargeable personal services eg repair services, animal care, aged care, child care, concierge services, guide services, dancing training, events organising and house work.

3. Corporate products, network marketing, MLM and house items are not permitted. External organisations and corporate items are treated as paid advertising. Plse contact admin@SilverHairsClub.com.

4. Only Active Club members are allowed to participate in this program. Non-active members won’t be allowed.

5. Currently, this program is free to use to approved members. Approved products and services will receive a “Supported by SilverHairsClub” letter from the Club. SilverHairsClub may withdraw this support, if the member misuse this program. Members are wholly responsible for their products and services.

Go Wild! What can SHC do for you? Or what can you do for SHC?

SilverHairsClub started in 2005. When you first join SHC, the Club had only one objective, and that is to provide a platform for you to find and meet friends. Today, the objective remains unchanged.

Many members have found new friends and form small groups. Many go travel together, have tea and meals regularly, and go social dancing together. Some go for exercises and walks together. If not for these outings, many are happy to chit chat.

But more than 95% of SilverHairsClub members are inactive. You may be one of them. The Club likes to bring you out, and come together as seniors, over 45. While we are aware you may be busy working or looking after tiny-tots. You may also not like too much socialising or you may find the activities not suitable to your like. Or is your non-participation because we have more lady participation than men.

Well, take a step and Go Wild. You maybe exploring retirement possibilities, a part time job or some things to keep you busy. Perhaps, exploring online ecommerce where u can be anywhere and still enjoy some income to keep up with today’s modern kids.

Or fishing, golfing, camping, a wild BBQ, listening to music or reading a book.

You definitely have some ideas, that’s why you join SilverHairsClub, a club for over 45s. But if your goal is to relax and do nothing, do share with us too.

Tell us what we can do for you as a Club. You can also share what you can do for the Club. You can share on the forum or you can whatsapp me at +65 9489-4360. And the wilder, the better.

Write to us today. We look forward to hear from you.

Are all the names in the SHC database still around?

Honestly, I dont know.  I just know there are 6200 names in our email database. When we send out email updates, and if the email is returned, we strike off the name.  This is how we keep the email database clean, meaning the email address is LIVE.

We have about 2,400 members in our Whatsapp database.  Whatsapp does not have a way to tell if the person is still live.  But each month, we sent out updates to about 2,400 members.

In our telephone database we have more than 7,000 members.  Once in a while, we send out short SMS updates to members who are on this database.  The club does not call via phone calls to members.  Responses from sms are very good, and out of the 7,000, approx 1,000 members will reponse.  Unfortunately, SMS are an expensive commuication method.

Trump is a Twitter.  SHC does not use a Twitter account to reach out to members.

Today, we aim to update our membership list again.  A Whatsapp msg was sent out this morning.  It basically says, please acknowledge so that we know you are still around.  So, if you did not receive a Whatsapp msg from the club today, it means we do not have your contact. Please let your friends know they can update SHC by sending a msg to +65 9489 4360.

Yangon trip Thur/Fri 20/21 Apr 2017 “Meet other Singaporean residents in Myanmar”

The Club has done a few trips to Myanmar, in particular to its ccommercial capital Yangon.  Today, Singaporeans do not need a visa to enter Myanmar.

Many Singaporeans live in Yangon; they are either doing their own businesses or working for large companies.  As Myanmar expands and opens itself to the world, many seek opportunities in a country that was once cut off from the outside world. ATMs and credit cards have since popped up in most parts of Yangon.  There are more entertainment spots. More and more cars are being imported.  International schools, with one being run by a Singapore have established themselves well.  Many restaurants chains which you are familiar with in Singapore and the region are doing well, with a growing working class.  Myanmar has a sizeable rich and well to do consumers.

The Singapore name is well established and sort after in Myanmar.  Many Singaporeans have done well in various positions and businesses in the country. SHC members have asked to do another trip to Yangon as a club.  This time, we shall do a trip but it wont be a tourist trip. You can easily plan a trip with a travel agent.  I have allocated two days 20 and 21 April 2017 to meet resident Singaporeans and families who have been residing in Myanmar for many years.  We will likely have lunch, dinner or breakfast.  Yu can mingle with them, and find out more about living in Myanmar, their experience and the opportunities in this up and coming nation.

To keep simple, all participants book and pay their own airfares, and book their own hotels.  You may go earlier and you may leave later, but the dates are 20 and 21 Apr 2017.  You organise your own airport transfers.

Resident Singaporeans will be invited, and we will pay for their meals.  Cost likely to be double or in some cases, triple our share.

If you are interested to join this “Meet fellow Singaporeans in Myanmar”, please indicate your name here.  You may post here requests here.

A properous and healthy Rooster year to all members

Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,
The Rooster is here.  This bird wakes up early in the morning, way before most of us are up and running.  Sometimes, they get confused and start to crow at the wrong time of the day.  But roosters are strong birds.  Fighting cocks will jump, kick and claw, well only with another rooster.

I have rarely seen an old Rooster.  They always walk tall and upright.  They dont hunch, or limp.  The feathers are always bright and colourful.  So nice, if we can all be like roosters when we get older.

Let’s take this opportunity to wish one another “A happy, healthy and properous year ahead”.  To the many lucky members who are enjoying their retirement, let’s remember there are many other members who are still working or have to work after 67.
Look at all the elderly persons around us.  We will all be like them sometime soon.  For those who have annoyed us in 2016, let’s not hold the grudge.  Not always possible, but let’s try to forgive and forget.

And finally, if you are enjoy your Raw Fish salad, this picture and cheat sheet explanations may be useful while having Lo Hei.

Enoy the Rooster year.  Look forward to your participation in SHC.

Send your wishes to fellow members here.  We want to know you are still around.

EPIC 1000km KDF Millennium Ride 2017 – A Charity Event participation by Ivan Lim

Hi SHCians,

A charity ride a year helps keep the doctors away…

Hahahaaa! No lah! It’s just my coined saying only.

But seriously, for 2017, I am back to the EPIC 1000km Charity Ride.

Had a shoulder injury (non-cycling related) in late 2015 and had to drop out of the EPIC 2016 Charity Ride in January last year.

Like my previous efforts with the EPIC Cyclists, do note that for every SGD10/- of contributions you make through my profile for this EPIC 1000KM Charity Ride 2017, I will pledge SGD1/- from my own pocket, up to a maximum of SGD500/- …… just doing my $$$ part too and giving forward.

Hope to count on your support again! TQ in advance!

Lastly, wishing all SHCians, A Healthy, Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year 2017!

Merry Christmas to all SilverHairs

Dear fellow SHC members,

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, But, the very next day, you gave it away.  This year, I shall give it to someone special.  Merry Christmas.  Indeed, time flies.  Soon,, 2016 will go and a new year begins, 2017.

Some of us were members of SHC 10 years ago.  Today, many of us have made new and close friends, some very special.  We hope you will bring more members to the Club, and grow the SilverHairsClub.

Share your thoughts of the season to fellow SilverHairs.

Selling investment schemes to fellow SHC members is not allowed

It has come to my attention that some members of the Club are offering investment schemes to fellow members.  These members attend Club events and try to convince fellow members the benefits and rewards from investing in these schemes.

I am also aware that these members have misrepresented themselves as founding members of SilverHairsClub. SHC has been around for the last 11 years and founding members are well documented in the Club history.

This post serves to inform fellow members and those who are offering investment schemes that SHC does not allow the selling of these services in Club gatherings.

If it should come to my attention again that these members continue to sell investment products or schemes within Club activities, the member involved will be taken off the Club membership immediately.

Please do take note.  SHC will continue to serve as a platform for SilverHairs to meet and make new friends.

Recruit the new SHC committee

shclogo300    committee1

Dear members,

We have tried different committee concepts to run SHC.  We learn what works and what fails.  But, we should not give up, even though we had failed in the past.  I still think it is better to have a committee to run the SilverHairsClub.  Personally, I do not prefer the status quo situation.  So, I will try again.  One concept which will not change is that members can continue to organise activities for other members, as EOs or ECs.

The new committee will come from our general membership.  For the first year, the chairman will be me.  Haha, I am no retired general, maybe a retired fisherman. If you like to join the committee, please whatsapp to me at +65 9489 4360.

Some points which I have learnt over the last 10 years from Club members are:

  1. Able to work with other committee members.  Friendly and sociable members preferred.  Less “I” and more “We”.
  2. All meetings will be via Whatsapp only.  Physical meetings only from time to time.  Why Whatsapp?  because I travel most of the month, so very little time in Singapore.  But, I believe in SHC and our seniors population.  We have to care for ourselves.
  3. Members should not circulate pictures, videos, URLs, only text.
  4. Agenda strictly re Club matters only.
  5. No politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM.
  6. Committee members who are unable to participate in the meetings, I am sorry we have to let you go.  Committee members who break the rules, will be automatically take out of the committee.

If you would like to develop a future for SHC, and are interested to make our objective work, I would to invite you to join the new SHC committee.  Our objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.  I would like to extend this platform, but let’s discuss within the committee.

I look forward to hearing from you.  +65 9489 4360.

Sept Monthly gathering

shclogo300 announcement4  aprilmtg1

This month, we were planning to have the SHC monthly gathering with Ann Giri as the EO.  Unfortunately, she has indicated she has no experience organising the monthly gathering.  Looks like the Sept monthly gathering is off.

I am not sure about future monthly gatherings.  A few things go on in my mind.

  1. Should we have a paid person or group to organise the monthly gathering?  Of course, we have to figure out how to pay this person or group.l
  2. It appears that free membership is not working.  Members expect someone to organise the monthly gathering on a regular monthly basis.
  3. There is a suggestion that we should ask the previous EOs to organise gatherings again.  I am not sure, as it runs counter to our idea to have one member do a gathering once in the lifetime of the members.
  4. Maybe we should pick members in turn to be the EO if the member has not done the role before.

What do you think?

Opportunity to tap the newly launched Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise (RaiSE)

RaiSE was launched on 27 May 2015.  In Channel News Asia”s report today, RaiSE will distribute $30m worth of grant and investments over 5 years to boost social enterprises. The requirements are a financial assessment, a compelling social objective and a proven sustainability of the business model.  The amount awarded depends on the maturity of the social enterprise.  Funding will support proof-of-concept.

RaiSE notes that many social enterprises face challenges such as talent, business know-how and funding.

SilverHairsClub has a clear objective of providing a platform for Singaporeans, over 45 to meet new and more friends.  It has been operating since Oct 2005, and we would be celebrating our 10th anniversary this Oct.  We have many activities.

1.  As a social enterprise, our EOs and ECs have organised numerous activities.  We have no lack of activities, as we believe in our concept of one member doing an activity during the life of his/her membership.  Some EOs have been organising and running activities for the last 10 years.

2.  Financially, SHC operates on a cost basis.  The Club does not collect membership fees, and as long as members are over 45, Singaporeans and PR, they are eligible to join as a member of SilverHairsClub.  We have been operating 10 years under this financial model.  Although we do not have a physical premise to call our own or rent from a landlord, we have managed well with public venues and private premises.

3.  In terms of management, we operate with minimal manpower.  Some of our key roles are membership admin, IT and hosting services and support services to our SilverHairsClub.com.  All other operations and management work are within the role of the EOs and ECs.

4.  With the existing model and concept, SHC can expand its social enterprise to other Singaporeans and PRs living within mainland Singapore.  Funding and assistance from RaiSE will widen our scope, our membership and sustain our activities.

What do you think?  Shall we actively seek assistance from RaiSE?  And what can you do be part of the committee to seek this assistance? Thinking.

Dear members,

Many of you have been with SilverHairsClub since Oct 2015 2005.  Many are still around, while some have gone quiet, and some can only see us from afar.

I have uploaded a video (right column) showing the  faces of members during our early days.  See if your face is there.  I remember many faces; and this video brings back good memories.

October is our 10th Anniversary; and we can look forward to a fun celebration.  At this moment, we have kept our options open.  Give us your thoughts on what you think the celebration can be like.  I look forward to your suggestions; and if you like to be part of the organising committee, feel free to write to me.

This event will be held in Oct 2014 2015.

MONTHLY WALK – LOWER PIERCE RESERVOIR BOARD WALK
Date: Saturday, 7 March 2015
Time: 3.30 pm sharp (be punctual as would be taking a bus to Bishan Park)
Meeting Point: Yio Chu Kang MRT station (Beside POSB ATM)
Duration: Approx. 2-1/2 hrs
ECs : Alice Seah and Serene Low

The hustle and buzzle of Chinese Lunar New Year will end on 5th March. After feasting on all the sumptuous goodies during this festive period, let us all get ready to burn off some excess calories by joining our next monthly nature walk.

The walk will cover the area of Lower Pierce Reservoir, the second oldest reservoir in Singapore. On the boardwalk, we will meander through the matured secondary rain forest where there are numerous rubber trees and oil palms. Apart from the flora and fauna, there are birds, wild boars, monkeys, squirrels, mini monitor lizards, spiders etc.

At the end of the walk, we will aim for the Casuarina Curry Restaurant for the famous crispy roti prata.

Note: Bring water bottle, caps, umbrella and insect repellent. Do wear comfortable walking shoes.

Our Walk Team ECs: Christina CL Chan, Charles Wee, Mary Tan, Veronica Wong,

Susan Tan CH takes over the role of Calendar manager

announce1  announce3  announce2

We have a Calendar which EOs and ECs can use to link their events to.  However, few members use it.  Once in a while, we have members asking where and when are the coming events.

I have asked Susan CH Tan to man the calendar, so that we can keep it updated for use by members.  On your own, EOs and ECs can put in their activities in the Calendar, and link it to the Post;.

Susan has kindly agreed, and she will man the Calendar.  EOs and ECs who do not know, unable to or forgot how to use the calendar can contact Susan for help. As a guide, if your event is NOT LINKED to the calendar within 24 hours, Susan will come in to help, and place the link for the Event organiser EO or Event Cordinator EC.  Ask her, if you want to know more about the Calendar.

Here is our Calendar.  https://silverhairsclub.com/?page_id=12691

Thank you Susan for helping up in the club.
