PotLuck – Sun, May 17, 2009 Botanic Gardens

It’s been a long long time since our last big Potluck. Well, let’s have one, where we can meet, chat and have a picnic under the romantic sun. Everybody is invited. Simply, bring along a sheet to place on the grass and rest your buttock. Also a cap to shade your face.

Bring some home-cooked food, enough to share among 5 people. I suggest everybody brings along a bottle of ice water or tea or your favourite beer, as this is the heaviest item. For potluck, you can bring rice, noodles, curry, kuehs, desserts or salads. You can also bring along a roast duck, or steamed chicken, but make sure it is chopped into small pieces first. For those who cannot cook, you can bring black rubbish plastic bags, paper cups, plates, ice, forks or spoons or even some fans.

However, if we cannot eat or drink all the things you bring along, I guess you have to bring it home. So, enough for 4-5 people plse. So, come and stroll into the gardens, bring along your dogs, and let’s have a good time, meeting other members.

  • Venue: The Singapore Botanic gardens
  • Date: Sunday, May 17, 2009 Time: 1600 to 1900 hrs.
  • Fee: No charge. This is a public place.
  • Agenda: get together for a picnic, teochews, Hokkiens, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, cantonese, and everybody.

On arrival: Find a cool place and lay your sheet. Put your potluck infront of you and on your sheet. When SHCians walk around, invite them to come to your spot and sample what you have cooked. Remember to bring along your name tag.

We will start a registration list, so you can register what you are bringing along. If you change your mind later, simply notify by writing a comment, and we will change the item.

I believe that at this time, music is provided by SSO, celebrating its 30th birthday. We can listen to a string of familiar classics, while we relax for a picnic in the Palm valley. You may register what you are bringing along now.

Dinner on 25 April 2009 at the H.K. Best Soup Restaurant

Dear SHC Friends,

Do you believe in drinking soup as a culture for life longevity ? Well, the HongKongers and Southern Chinese in China have done it.  As Chinese and especially the Cantonese, we were told by our mom, grandma, or even great grandma that drinking soup regularly is good for our body.

Basically, tonic soup is very nourishing to the soul, it improves blood circulations, boost energy and also increase one immunity level. It is also proven to be good for the overall well being.

There are many varieties of herbal soups. Do check this out if you want to know more on Chinese Herbal receipes on soup and its articles  : http://herbal.recipes.googlepages.com/index.html
(Disclaimer : By the way, the author is also Susan, but it’s not me……..) emoticon

Last weekend, about twenty of us (SHCians) attended a brief talk on the secret cum preparation of chinese herbal tonic soup  at “H.K. BEST SOUP” Restaurant. The owner/chef (???) is from Hong Kong, a highly respectable cook and is specialized in double-boiled soup. He is also a famous column writer on soup preparation/cooking in our local Chinese newspaper, ????.

For those who are curious and also to experience what Chef ? have in store for us, we are organizing a Hong Kong (Cantonese) cuisine dinner in April. This special value for money menu which Chef ? quoted for us, should not be missed !  For $220.00 per table, we are having “Pen Cai” (??) as our main course and also a special double-boiled wild yam or "Huai Shan" (??) soup. That’s not all, please scroll down to see the list of food in the menu below. This works out to be $22.00 per person nett only.

Read more about "Huai Shan" and its goodness here : http://herbal.recipes.googlepages.com/articles_30.html

(Note : for those not familiar (including me !)emoticon  “Pen Cai” (??) is the next popular dish after “Buddha Jumps Over The Wall” – ???)

For those who are interested, this happening will be on:

Back to Simple Basic Cooking.

Greetings from Sydney. We have just returned from a short "balek kampong" trip to Singapore and we were amazed to find such a great varities of fusion food between eastern and western food available to us. We did enjoy these new food versions but what we missed were simple traditional foods that filled us with memories of the tradition kitchens, with its preparations for special feast days and the ritual of everyday family meals.

We are awared that food preparations and cooking stlyes have evolved with the hectic lifestyle and needs of the younger generation. But unless we the silverHairs passed it to them (on the presumption that they wanted to learn) these traditional food and cooking secrets will be lost and slipped beyond the realm of recall.

My wife is currently compiling a collection of simple home cookings and recipes that are normally handled down from parents to children through the generations by word of mouth. We are writing this post to ask for your help and share with us your family cooking secrets so that we can preserve the true flavour of the original food for the young ones to keep.

USEFUL TIPS

I have in mind for members to share a range of useful tips that SHC  members can find useful. No I am not talking about horse racing, soccer tips(which are my areas of interest)

An example is that my mother says when I do the washing I must  be turn the clothing inside out, zippers must be zipped up and buttons unbuttoned. How many of you out there who does not do it this way please own up and share how this advice has proven useful.

I have 3 travel tips to share ; when traveling always take the name card of the hotel when you go out as taxi drivers have a bad habit of sending you to the wrong hotel and then apologise profusely for hearing wrongly. With the card and name of the hotel written in the local language they will have less excuse of doing so.

The other tip when taking the MRT , METRO, MTR , the TUBE or the UNDERGROUND especially if the language is foreign as in France is to look for the end station when changing lines and not look for directions for the station you intend to go to.For example when going to Dover when coming from the airport do not look for directions to Dover but look for directions to Boon Lay,Of course you need a station guide or map as well!

Another tip is to learn a few useful phrases in the local language eg in France "ou er de toilette?(where is the toilet? How much? Where is the —— ?

If you are a sushi fan please take note that certain outlets(not restaurants) offer a 50% discount 30 mins before closing time.

I used to leave my battery in my laptop even when I was using the power plug connection. Now I know that u should remove the battery when using the power connection. You should also drain the battery as much as possible if u use the battery. In this way your battery life will be much longer.

When I find my notes I will share how certain stains are removed.

Members  can also  share survival tips ,camping tips cooking tips, how to get nice phone numbers without paying extra like 93833883 or 96998511,tips on weight reduction, how to stave of the onset of  wrinkles, special diet or healthy food programmes, cosmetic tips, travel tips, foodie tips on where the best is for certain types for certain types of food, how to travel with children, investment tips, business tips, where to get bargains, household tips, how to keep food fresh for a longer period  in the fridge, how to make things last longer, where to buy the best durians or where to get tasteful durians at decent prices, how to cut down your handphone bills when overseas.I cant possibly cover every subject so I leave it to members to create new ideas

Tips can also be negative: how to avoid getting ripped off,how to avoid bad situations, share bad experiences or knowledge of bad experiences so members can avoid falling into the same traps.

One tip when buying a car or something similar make sure before you sign  read the receipt  or contract as to whether it includes the GST or excludesand state so clearly. One conman try to con my friend out of an extra GST payment after the deposit was paid.Luckily she got out of a tight spot when I advise her to call their bluff as the road tax was expiring soon and they backed off.

Let this post also be an avenue for members to get advice on issues not related to friendships and relationships or personal issues.(this we can cover in another agony uncle post that I might initiate soon). So if you have a non personal problem or dilemna you can ask fellow members for advice!Caveat Emptor clause applies…use it at your own discretion.

I hope SHC members are willing to share and sometimes in the process embarass themselves(you can always say you were told by a friend…) and help each other by sharing our wealth of Silverhairs experience.

Illuminate each other with your glow , light the candle  and lift the darkness upon us!

NO MATTER HOW OLD WE ARE WE CAN NEVER STOP LEARNING PEARLS OF WISDOM!

Chance to win Vietnam air ticket

Make a date to meet Patrick Khoo from 2.00pm onwards at  Asian Civilizations Museum(next to Victoria Memorial and near the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles…for deatailed map log on to www.acm.org.sg or drop me an email at insiders111@yahoo.com.sg and I will send you an email with map and full day programme).

Besides the free ticket to HCMC  Lucky Draw(just fill form…don’t have to be present)I will give you(not me actually) free Milo welcome drink  for all and balloons for your kids.My booth will have a lucky dip where you will have a chance to win a exquisite Vietnamese embroidery painting,Vietnamese hats, caps (not those made in France)and T-shirts.The ?th (number connected with my date of birth)SHC member who visits my booth if he does get a prize in the lucky dip will be guaranteed (fixed legally) to win a Vietnamese hat from me.

This exhibit is the same as Steven Chan’s post in June but the programme for the whole day which starts at 11.00am is different. I would suggest you come from 2.00pm onwards to see the martial arts experts from Vietnam and they will be followed by 5 hot ladies from an all girl pop fusion band.Admission is free instead of the usual S$8.There will also be perfomances from award winning modern dancers, story telling for kids,Games for young and silverhairs, free lessons on how to make water fairy puppets and paper lanterns.

There will be a special preview of  a Silverhair HCMC/Nha Trang(no swimming in seas due Monsoon season)/Cantho City Tour with itinerary based on recommendations and input from experienced Viet Trippers like Kenneth Tan,Dee Ang,Lena Wang,Jassmine Teo and last but not least the effervescent Steven Chan(maps were useful). This tour is based on  clean and comfortable budget accomodation and outstanding exotic food like Tamarind Crab,Elephant ear fish,Vietnamese seafood dinner,BBQ dinner,Giant rice balls, gourmet lunch by hotel resort chef ,outstanding French restaurant and visit to ice cream parlour.Other highlights include visit to Hot Spring Mineral bath and waterfalls,a light sleeper luxury train overnight from HCMC/Nha Trang/HCMCvisit to Pearl Farm  and a chance to see the Ghe Cho Festival in Cantho where you will see the incandescent paper lanterns powered by burning oil careen into the air(yes these lanterns actually fly as seen in an Andy Lau movie). This tour is from 08Nov to 16Nov based on minimum 15 to go.(if numbers are less than 15 the rates will be higher with no Singapore Tour Leader Escort).Final pricing and basic itinerary will be posted in the forum when prices are finalised. This special tour is not  a typical standard tour but has been specially designed to meet SHC tastes and can be tailored to suit SHC members needs and budget eg Pearl Farm tour can be chopped if 100km travel from Nha Trang is considered too long a journey.Number of days can also be shortened if budget turns out to be high.

The other programmes at this "Vietnam experience" include Vietnamese food  and mooncakes , an outdoor  pop fusion concert  and other entertainment from  8.00pm to 11.00pm.Of course you will a  2nd chance to see the interesting museum exhibits from Vietnam if you missed it the 1st time with Steven.

Enjoy the whole egg for goodness sake !

Egg yolks are good for you

The truth about egg yolks

Many people throw away the egg yolk because they think that’s where all the nasty fat and cholesterol is". This is a perfect example of how confused most people are about nutrition.

In a world full of misinformation, somehow most people now mistakenly think that the egg yolk is the worst part of the egg, when in fact, the YOLK IS THE HEALTHIEST PART OF THE EGG!

By throwing out the yolk and only eating egg whites, you’re essentially throwing out the most nutrient dense, antioxidant-rich, vitamin and mineral loaded portion of the egg. The yolks contain so many B-vitamins, trace minerals, vitamin A, folate, choline, lutein, and other powerful nutrients… it’s not even worth trying to list them all.

In fact, the egg whites are almost devoid of nutrition compared to the yolk. Even the protein in egg whites isn’t as powerful without the yolks to balance out the amino acid profile and make the protein more bio-available. Not to even mention that the egg yolks from free range chickens are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Yolks contain more than 90% of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, and panthothenic acid of the egg. In addition, the yolks contain all of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in the egg, as well as all of the essential fatty acids.

And now the common objection I get all the time when I say that the yolks are the most nutritious part of the egg…"But I heard that whole eggs will skyrocket my cholesterol through the roof ." No, this is FALSE!

First of all, when you eat a food that contains a high amount of dietary cholesterol such as eggs, your body down-regulates it’s internal production of cholesterol to balance things out. On the other hand, if you don’t eat enough cholesterol, your body simply produces more since cholesterol has tons of important functions in the body.

And here’s where it gets even more interesting…There are indications that eating whole eggs actually raises your good HDL cholesterol to a higher degree than LDL cholesterol, thereby improving your overall cholesterol ratio and blood
chemistry.

And 3rd… high cholesterol is NOT a disease! Heart disease is a disease…but high cholesterol is NOT.

You can read the following article about why trying to attack cholesterol is a mistake, and what the REAL deadly risk factors actually are…

<http://www.truthaboutabs.com/cholesterol-myths.html>

So I hope we’ve established that whole eggs are not some evil food that will wreck your body… instead whole eggs are FAR superior to egg whites.

Also, your normal supermarket eggs coming from mass factory farming just don’t compare nutritionally with organic free range eggs from healthy chickens that are allowed to roam freely and eat a more natural diet.

I recently compared eggs I bought at the grocery store with a batch of eggs I got at a farm stand where the chickens were free roaming and healthy. Most people don’t realize that there’s a major difference because they’ve never bought real eggs from healthy chickens… The eggs from the grocery store had pale yellow yolks. On the other hand, the healthier free range eggs had deep orange colored yolks indicating much higher nutrition levels and carotenoids.

So next time a health or fitness professional tells you that egg whites are superior, you can quietly ignore their advice knowing that you understand the REAL deal about egg yolks.

One more thing about eggs… I read a study recently that compared groups of people that ate egg breakfasts vs groups of people that ate cereal or bagel based breakfasts. The results of the study showed that the egg eaters lost or maintained a healthier bodyweight, while the cereal/bagel eaters gained weight.

It was hypothesized that the egg eaters actually ate less calories during the remainder of the day because their appetite was more satisfied compared to the cereal/bagel eaters who would have been more prone to wild blood sugar swings and food cravings.

Healthy Cooking Made Easy Culinary Class – Aug 23, 2008

Dear Budding Chefs and friends at SHC!

I have received some positive feedback from fellow SHC members for us to have our first cooking get-together . emoticon I did consider doing this the “cheaper” way but decided to take the “no fuss” way out instead of having to impose on anyone, to wreck their kitchens or have to go through the hassle of getting all the ingredients and having to clean up afterwards!  Erks…just the thought of it!

We only have to pay a fee ($50 per pax) and we get a fabulous goodie bag worth $150 (which includes a limited edition Brandt mitten and apron set, a Scanpan umbrella and potholder plus $100 cooking class gift voucher from a renowned cooking school inlcuding a lucky draw!  I know the chef, she’s actually a client of mine as I design most of her marketing collaterals.  She’s got a wonderful cooking studio too near Portsdown Road.

Anyway, details of this class :

  • Venue : Copthorne Kings Hotel, 403 Havelock Road
  • Time : Session 1 at 11 am – 2 pm or Session 2 at 4 pm – 7 pm (let me know your preferred timing too)

Please confirm by August 8th so I can get the seats booked as it is first-come-first serve basis.

We will get to sample dishes which includes Zucchinni Parcel – King Oyster Mushroom with Mesclun Salad, Pan Seared Wild Ocean Trout with Tofu & Honey Kumquat Sauce and Chocolate Mousse with Strawberry Jelly!

In this way, we will have more time to mingle and get to know one another, especially for those of us who are new to SHC.  I would love to see all of you face-to-face for a proper introduction.  It will be nice to put a face to these emails.  So, those of you who are interested, please leave me a comment with your preferred time and contact details so I can do the coordination with you offline.  Oh, and the good news is if I can round up 15 pax or more, I can get a 10% bulk discount.  Please extend this invitation to your other Silver friends too! emoticon

Look forward to getting some positive feedback and have our first cooking meet on Aug 23rdemoticon

Overnite at ECP & SHC gathering on Sat/Sun 16-17 Aug 2008

Hi SHCians,  be crazy, and give your SilverHairs years a change.  Remember I was saying that one day, we should have a gathering on a Sunday.  Well, this early morning I had a walk at the East Coast Parkway, together with Ron Lai.  I must say a Sunday morning gathering can be very refreshing.  So, to start with, here is the real dream.   An overnight camp at ECP, with the aim of having SHCians get to know one another better, and making new and more friends.  Followed, by a gathering on a refreshing Sunday morning.

  • Session 1 – Sat 1200 1500 hrs – Build a 2 to 4 pax tent at ECP.  Check in time.  Participants should share the cost of a tent.  Go look at Carrfourre, check out costs and share with us here.  If you have not camped for years, this is real fun.  Campers decide their own camp-mates.  I shall ask Yew Kwong and cycling team for their advice on the exact camp location, near Burger King, taking toilets into consideration.
  • Session 2 – Sat 1800 hrs – BBQ.  Concept: Charcoal and fire will be provided.  Bring your own meat and sweet potatoes, just for yourself.  Daylight BBQ, to make sure we see what is cooked.  You can bring your own food and drinks.  Stay flexible. Now,  replaced with a potluck.
  • Session 3 – Sat night – Camp overnight.  Do whatever you like.  You can go fishing, chit-chatting, swimming, having a beer or two somewhere, watch the submarines swimming out in the open seas, aiyoh up to individuals.  I think can count falling stars too.  Bring your guitars.  Gate close at 12mn.
  • Session 4 – Sun 0800 hrs morning – Wake up early for SHC gathering at camping area and at Burger King.  For non-campers, come join the SHC gathering.  Breakfast on individual ac.
  • Sunday 12nn – Check out and go home.  I shall ask Ron Lai to assist with providing bus service information to Burger King.

The above event is confirmed.  It will go on, irrespective of weather and number of pax.  There is no charge to participate in the above activity, except as mentioned above.

Terence Seah

A registration list will be started.  Please indicate the sessions you will be attending.  You can also attend one session.  If you like the fun to knowing SHCians better, come for all four sessions.  Strictly for registered SilverHairsClub members only.

  • Terence Seah – Session 1, 2, 3, 4.  Please accept my apology, as this is the only weekend I am in Spore.  Now, who wants to share my tent?
  • Lily Ho – Session 3 & 4.  Thinking of squeezing into Terence’s tent.
  • Dolly Lim – Session 3 & 4.  Squeezing into Terence’s tent.
  • Yew Kwong – Session 3 & 4.  Squeezing into Terence’s tent.

MKZ (Malacca) Trip 04 July 08-06 July 08 for discerning lovers of good food

Malacca Trip 04Jul  – 06 Jul 2008
Staying in 3 bedroom apartments with 2 pax in master bedroom  A with bathroom attached , 2 pax in bedroom B , 2 pax in bedroom C ,1 pax sleeping in 1 bed in living room , 1 pax sleeping on sofa in living room(total 8 pax to one apartment-an alternate is 7 to an apartment at M$82 with nobody sleeping on sofas)…stay is at Century Mahkota Apartments within walking distance to 2 major shopping malls. There are better and cheaper modes of stay like hotels but I chose this style of stay due to the fact we can relax and congregate together in one apartment to socialise and fraternize.  Allotment of sleeping arrangements will be on a drawing of lots basis for PLAN A  where all parties will pay an equal amount of M$76 per person per night(including breakfast).  Alternatively if all parties are agreeable …for PLAN B….Bedrooms B and C will be based on M$76 per person per night( X 2 ) and those in bedroom A can pay M$92 and those sleeping in the living room can pay M$60 if all parties are agreeable. The gross rate for 8 to an apartment is M$605 and for 7 to an apartment is M$573 per apartments .

All expenses before  you reach Malacca and after you leave Malacca will be at your own expense eg meals and drinks before you reach MKZ and after you leave MKZ.
The agreed methodology of individual car arrangements where drivers get a free ride and all the remainder of pax will contribute to petrol, toll fees and parking. Any other hidden costs like accidents(touch wood everything goes well), damage etc will be borne equally by all participants (you may consider seriously to take up insurance before the trip and can contact me regarding the insurance plans). The pax in the cars must also top up the petrol to full tank basis before exiting Malaysia. This expected expenditure between S$150 to S$200 will be handled and audited by 2-4 senior SHC regarding monitoring of expenses for the whole group. If there is a surplus this balance can augment our dinner in Johore Bahru on the way back( if not enough participants can top up the balance.I would like to declare the my company will benefit on the 10% comm on the hotel portion only. Chicken Bryani The Easy Way

I was reading one of Steven Chan Posting on "The Joy of Eating & Cooking" and wanted to share this Simple & Easy way of cooking Nasi Bryani/Chicken Bryani .

I am a very lousy cook by nature and do not enjoy cooking at all but this "dish" is very easy to cook and is very "Yummy"

Pauline Khoo & Sally Kang had been my guests for this dish and enjoyed it very much. I used to cook for my church gathering as well.

I will type the receipt in the comments column.

Fried Durian and 10 Fastastic Food for Over 50s

"Goreng Durian”  looks like goreng pisang at $1.60 at
piece,  – at Old Airport Road Hawker centre  #1-05

Comment: Fantastic better than normal durain , as it feels hot , 10
times better than apple pie, I think if someone  MacDurian this
and be the latest hot cake in town like Papa Roti .

Anyone knows how bad or how good durain is ?

10 Fantastic Foods that you should not miss  for Over-50s

Eating
the right food can hold back the years and keep us feeling and looking
good. As we get older, we need less food, but more nutrients to stay
healthy. Here are vitamin-rich options to include in your daily diet.

1. Brown rice. A lot of people shy away from carbohydrates because of
their reputation for causing weight gain, but they’re crucial for
maintaining energy levels. Stick to whole grains such as brown rice and
bread, and whole-grain cereals, which provide plenty of fiber. This can
help to lower cholesterol levels, reduce your risk of heart disease,
colon cancer, gall stones, diabetes and obesity, and is vital for
keeping your bowels healthy — they can become less active as we age.

2. Eggs. They’ve had a lot of bad press, but eggs are good for you —
and now it seems there’s no need to avoid them, even if you’re worried
about cholesterol. They’re a great source of protein and lutein, which
protects your eyes against degeneration and cataracts. Studies suggest
they can help to prevent blood clots, reducing the risk of heart attack
and stroke — a recent study found that eating six eggs a week lowered
the risk of breast cancer by 44 percent. Nutritionists now say having
one or two eggs a day doesn’t cause a noticeable increase in
cholesterol levels because the body makes its own from the saturated
fats in our diet and not from cholesterol-rich foods like eggs.

3. Milk. As we age, our calcium requirements rise, so it’s important to
include lots of calcium-rich foods in your diet every day. Low-fat
cow’s milk has loads of health benefits. It’s packed full of calcium,
needed for strong, healthy bones and for preventing osteoporosis. It
also helps prevent the bone loss caused by the menopause or rheumatoid
arthritis. Drink two glasses of low-fat milk every day, or include
low-fat yogurts and calcium-enriched fruit juices in your diet.

4. Spinach. Popeye had the right idea fueling up on this superfood.
Calorie for calorie, it holds more nutrients than any other food. It’s
a particularly good source of iron; vitamins C, A and K; and
antioxidants which may help to protect against heart attack and stroke.
Spinach can help protect you from colon cancer, osteoporosis and
arthritis. Like eggs, it’s packed with lutein — great for your eyes —
so try a breakfast of steamed spinach with poached eggs.

5. Bananas. Just one of these yellow fruits provides a whopping 467
milligrams of potassium, which is important for keeping your muscles
strong and healthy (particularly the heart) and even helps reduce high
blood pressure. Bananas are a good source of fiber, which can help
prevent heart disease, and they have an antacid effect, so they’re
useful for treating heartburn.

Add chopped bananas to oatmeal for a vitamin-rich breakfast, or blend
them with a bit of low-fat yogurt or milk and some fruit juice for a
power-packed smoothie. Other good sources of potassium are lentils,
sardines and dried apricots.

6. Chicken. Not only is it one of the most versatile meats, it’s one of
the healthiest. Stick to the breast, which has the least fat, and
remove the skin.

Chicken is packed with protein and helps prevent bone loss. It’s also a
good source of selenium, an important nutrient in preventing cancer,
and B vitamins, which help to increase energy and boost your brain
powers.

7. Salmon. It’s rich in omega-3 fats, which reduce cholesterol levels,
protect against some cancers, and prevent blood clotting. Research has
also shown that salmon can help ease depression and prevent memory
loss. It’s a good source of niacin, which has been shown to provide
protection against Alzheimer’s.

Aim to eat fresh or tinned salmon at least three times a week. Walnuts are another great source of omega-3s.

8. Blueberries. These little marvels are very low in calories, but
bursting with nutrients. They are packed with antioxidants that help to
prevent cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, stomach
ulcers, heart disease and cancer.

They have also been shown to help lessen brain damage after a stroke
and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract — helping to tackle
constipation and diarrhea.

9. Herbs. As we age, our sense of taste declines, and it’s all too easy
to chuck in tons of salt to make food more appetizing. But as salt
increases your blood pressure, it’s healthier to jazz up your meals by
adding herbs and spices. Fresh herbs tend to taste stronger, but for
convenience, keep a selection of dried herbs in the cupboard.

10. Garlic. For such a small vegetable, garlic has huge benefits. It
helps prevent cancers, heart disease and reduces the risk of stroke. It
also has an anti-inflammatory effect, helping to reduce pain and
swelling caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also
help those with diabetes. If you can’t stand the flavor, try taking
taste-free garlic capsules.

Four Things to Avoid:

    * Sweets: These will make you pile on the pounds as
they provide lots of calories, but no nutrients. Limit your sugar
intake, too.
    * Salt: Your sense of taste diminishes as you age,
but avoid adding salt as it increases blood pressure. And look out for
"hidden" salt in gravy mixes, etc.
    * Alcohol: Have no more than two small drinks a day
— booze is full of calories and can stop your body absorbing vitamins.
Red wine is a healthier choice.
    * Saturated fats: These are found in meats, cheese,
chicken skin and ice cream. They increase your cholesterol levels and
make you put on weight.

A Potluck in the brewing, on Sat 27 October 2007

There is likely going to be a Potluck session coming up in October.  Likely to be Saturday, 27  October 2007.  The Event Organiser is currently surveying the place.  I suspect he is having a headache, thinking about how he can make this event fun and exciting to SilverHairsClub members.  No other information, except please keep this date in your diary, until the Event Organiser has come up with his plans.  Location will likely be Pasir Ris Park, near Pasir Ris MRT.

This date has been postponed.  The Event Organiser will make an announcement soon.
