Education services as a source of income

For some time already, some SHCians have dwelled on the topic of providing education or tuition services, as a source of income, when one go into retirement.  Of course, today, it is not necessary to be retire to provide tuition service services.

Recent ideas include education for children, conversation English for foreign students, proficiency lessons, a tuition club, etc.  Let’s use this Post to discuss.  There is no right or wrong ideas, practical or fluid ideas.  Please respect each others opinion.  Write it here; and other like-mind will join in.

The objective is at the end of this, a number of SHCians can get together, and make the business of education viable.  We will use the information and discussion here to determine interests and viability.

Looking for two SMS system managers

I am looking for two SMS managers to look after the operations of the SMS system.  The job is easy, if I can do it, you can.  Here are the requirements.

Hardware and software:
You don’t need to, but if you know word, excel, this is useful.
You should have a PC, which is ON 24 hours a day.
A phone server with a SIM chip will be provided.  This is for SMS only.  Connection between phone server and PC will be wireless Bluetooth, all will be provided. The SMS software will also be provided.

Some basic IT sense:
You must understand simple rules, eg:
If you do this, then this will happen.
If you don’t do this, then that will happen.
You should know how to import and export files eg .csv files.
You must make effort to read simple manual instructions.
You love designing sms games.

Qualities:
Need to be patient and run your own trials test, until you understand.
Don’t keep calling me, especially when I am travelling.  I will go crazy.

People skills:
You must be familiar with the most of the visible members.
You should be willing to communicate with them via email, especially kakis groups and kakis organisers.
You need to visit the server, at least once a day, to ensure the phone server and the PC are still alive.

Expenses:
All SMS expenses will be absorbed by SilverHairsClub.  You need to be prudent with SMS costs.  No outside work except SilverHairsClub.

Expectations:
You have to maintain 100% confidentiality with all tel numbers and other contact information.  This is extremely important, and breach of this will not be accepted.
This is hard work, but after a few months, the job will be easy.  Unfortunately, as SilverHairsClub is free, your service will be free.

Term:  There will be two SMS managers.  Essentially to backup one another.  The term will be two years.

I envisage the two appointments will start 1st July 2008 2009.  And will start in two stages.

Stage 1: starting and maintaining the kakis groups. Jan – Mar
Stage 2: 3 mths to learn and trial the system. Apr – Jun.

If you think you would like to take this task, plse raise your hand.

Attending a course in dating business

Hi MaryC, CatherineH, and others who are just as crazy as myself.

This topic follows a comment by MaryC a few days ago, about making crafts for her new "in-laws".  And, when I offer to throw a party, she says we have to find her a groom first.  And, CatherineHo has been asked to be a party organiser too.  Well, like some of us, I too wanted to offer to find MaryC a groom, until this morning.

This morning at 6am, while rushing to catch a flight to Kathmandu, I chance upon the Straits Times, 01 July 2008, Page H20.  And for the first time, I read the advertisement headlined "Establish and manage a dating business".  I think it is organised under WDA.  As I am now at the airport, I could not remember what the course content is like; but it has something to do with establishing and evaluating a dating business.   We had this topic of dating a year back, but did not spring to mind any ideas.

Caught on my mind this morning, that a few of us may be interested to start a dating business for people in Singapore.  You know young people are marrying later; fuzzy, aiyah for many reasons.  The course is, I think, $321 per person, SDF funded.  Anybody, likes to join the course, and see if this is a business in Singapore.  As you know, I am always keen in running projects which seniors can run, with their experience and knowledge.  Hopefully, some thing we can park under Blue Helmet.

Thanks MaryC and Catherine H.  I am aware some of us may find this topic objectional, but hopefully some of us will look at it as something we can do, as a business, as we get older; and influencing our young to start early.

Do you think SilverHairs in Singapore need jobs?

Immediately after 1997, when Asia was faced with the financial crisis, many people over 45 years were concerned with jobs.

But, nowadays, it seems that there is lesser concern for jobs for SilverHairs over 45.  Maybe we don’t have many job offers in recent months, but from response to the Blue Helmet project, and job topics, the response is cool.  In my discussions with some SHC members, we are now wondering if we should make jobs as one of our focus.

On the other hand, there appears to be more interests in small business and online trading.

Can you share your thoughts, and what you think, so that we can all get a good feel of what is happening?  Every comment is a personal viewpoint.  There is no bad view point.  So, let’s respect each others opinion.

I look forward to hear from as many members as possible.

Blue Helmet – Business with a Heart

An opportunity appears on the horizon to be operated as a business with links to SHC and her members.

We are looking for people having managerial traits with skills and knowledge in finance, administration and computers to automate as many repetitive processes as possible.  Collectively, interested parties will work together as one Biz Unit – SOHO Team that will work out the business model.  Amongst yourselves, please appoint your business officers and be prepared to stand before the Select Committee to make the marketing pitch to clinch the deal.  We encourage as many teams as possible to come forward.  There is enough business for everyone.

Typical business model will be to run automated finance & administration services to customers who are resident with us in the same office or externally.  There are more that one can do for Company, which wants to outsource their backroom work to reliable third parties like SOHO.

The Biz Unit – SOHO Team will think through the service product, it’s pricing and the operational flow and control needed.

If you do need help, just let KT Wong or Edwin Ong know, and arrangements will be made to have that support provided.  Just post your request here.

Blue Helmet

This year, we will start moving ahead with Blue Helmet.  Blue Helmet aims to establish SilverHairsClub as a group of experienced people, over 45, who have either retired or not working fulltime.

  • Blue Helmet’s objective is to provide opportunities for retired SilverHairs who would like to continue working, full-time, part-time or contract, locally or overseas, after their full time employment.
  • Blue Helmet’s core focus would be companies and organisations which place top priorities and emphasis on skills, experience and knowledge, over youth, low salaries and outsourcing advantages.

We will start slow, and build Blue Helmet into a common name, where companies and organisations can find experienced personnel to kickstart new projects, new businesses and train new employees.  Bue Helmet offers companies the opportunity to benefit from retired SilverHairs who have built years of experience and knowledge.

Opportunities will be entered into the Blue Helmet page for SilverHairs to view from time to time.

SilverHairsClub members with contacts for overseas assignments, new projects, start-up companies, training and educational positions can enter the opportunities as a comment.  As a rule, these opportunities should be in line with the skills, experience and knowledge, acquired by the individual over many years.

Strict rules of the club will continue to apply.  Blue Helmet – strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.
