Start Time: 4.00pm Sharp, taking bus to walk site

Duration:  about 2 hours.

A nice place to explore.    Climbing 58 steps to the summit lookout for a bird’s eye view of the garden.   An amazing variety of wildlife and nature and is home to so many birds, dragonflies, butterflies and insects.   Go through the freshwater swamp, streams and ponds in the garden.  Try to spot butterflies and dragonflies flying around at the Butterfly Garden.

Venture into the walking trail which is just a path between bushes and trees   The trail is a fairly easy route on an all-flat terrain except at the end where there’s quite a steep slope to go down and it is quite hard to gain a foothold on small slippery pebbles.   This trail will only be available till 2019 so come visit before it disappears.   Do wear comfortable covered walking shoes.

Introducing a weekend of adventure at Khao Yai National Park, 10-12 Oct 2015

khaoyai nat parkmap      khao-yai-national-park

Some of you have joined me at Khao Yai National Park. This will be the first event dedicated to SilverHairsClub members and children, aged 26 and above. We intend to hold this exciting event in Oct, from a Friday to a Sunday.

Khao Yai is located some 1.5-2 hours north-east of the old Donmuang airport. It is ideally suitable for young adults, beautiful waterfalls in October, a good place to look out in its natural habitats for wild elephants, deers, junglefowls, Asian bears, and bird watching.

I plan to stay in tents, which we can buy on our own or rent from the National Park. We will arrange a cook to handle our dinners and breakfast. Ideally suited for members and their adult children.

For ourselves, there are grape plantations, where we can enjoy fresh grapes, juices, red and white wines. Also a good local beef steak.

There is adventure land, with horse riding, ATVS, rides. Our adult kids will enjoy time together, and they will find btheir own time to mingle with one another and get to know one another better. Car racing, and other trills which we used to enjoy when we were young. Bring your sons and daughters along. You have to make the effort.

Quietly located, Khao Yai air is fresh, the morning is cool and a good time to spend with family. Important our children can mix with other children.

Golf. Loves, we can play as the famous “Forest hill” golf course, where many tee offs start from a height. It’s easy.

I intend to make it easy, as we will have helpers to make our trip fun, enjoyable and meaningful.

This trip is for you and your adult children. Our plan is to arrive at the airport, and head straight for Khao Yai, 2 hours away.

Confirmed date:  Meet at DonMuang airport at 10am morning and 10am at Survanabhumi airport (if a group is formed) on Sat 10 Oct and we arrive back at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct at about 5pm.  Others can proceed to Bangkok for other activities.

More details will come up. Express your interest here.

Changi Point provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.

A charming boardwalk takes you through lush greenery and undulating terrain along the rugged
western coastline, while a meandering waterfront walkway along the eastern beachfront creates
an interesting tropical experience of sea and sand. Viewing decks and pavilions along the way
enable you to pause, soak in the sea breeze and enjoy the excellent views out at sea.

The Changi Point Coastal Walk is divided into six segments, each with its unique experience :
– Sunset Walk, has beautiful view of the sunset, hence its name
– Kelong Walk, reminisce the good old kelong days as you tramp on wooden stilts
– Cliff Walk takes you through the rugged western coastline
– Sailing Point Walk, enjoy views of the sailboats and the expanse of the sea
– Beach Walk, a relaxing coastal walk along sandy beaches, along the way pause, soak in the sea breeze and enjoy the views out to sea

The hustle and buzzle of Chinese Lunar New Year will end on 5th March. After feasting on all the sumptuous goodies during this festive period, let us all get ready to burn off some excess calories by joining our next monthly nature walk.

The walk will cover the area of Lower Pierce Reservoir, the second oldest reservoir in Singapore. On the boardwalk, we will meander through the matured secondary rain forest where there are numerous rubber trees and oil palms. Apart from the flora and fauna, there are birds, wild boars, monkeys, squirrels, mini monitor lizards, spiders etc.

At the end of the walk, we will aim for the Casuarina Curry Restaurant for the famous crispy roti prata.

Note: Bring water bottle, caps, umbrella and insect repellent. Do wear comfortable walking shoes.

Start Time: 3pm sharp!! (due to constrains, must be punctual)

Duration: approx 3.5hrs

Meeting Point: Kranji MRT, entrance to “KopiTiam”.

We are back for an exciting adventure… Get up close to wildlife!

I have waited for several years for a better access to our largest
mangrove forest, 130 hectares (about 130 football fields) in
addition another 31-hectares of rich mangrove and coastal forests.

Hopefully, you will chance upon a baby frog hopping along the paths
(I missed to capture a shot) or a monitor lizard basking in the sun!
Do have your camera ready to take the unexpected encounters. hehe

Please bring along a snack or fruit for the extra “energy boost”!

This walk might end past norm dinner hour… we shall play by ear.

Important:
Wear comfortable walking/covered shoes, if possible bring
a small torchlight, drinking water, insect repellent, hat/cap.

If you encounter wildlife, back away slowly/quietly!

Regular SHC retreat to Desaru for members to get to know new and more friends

lotus desaru    lotus desaru1  lotus desaru2  lotus desaru3  SilverHairsClub will be 10 years  in Oct 2015.  During all this while, we had observed our objective; and that is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends.  This has worked very well, and many members have found their own circle of new friends.

Last few months, I have been reviewing our objective and plans for 2015.  The idea of providing a platform for members to meet, and then letting them find other SilverHairs with similar interests, hobbies and thinking has worked well.  So, I intend to stick to this route.  Yes, many succeeded; but many have not succeeded.  We have not been able to individually pair or group member interests yet.  It is kind of difficult to read members’ minds.

This year, in 2015, we are working on expanding members’ gatherings to outside Singapore.  Same idea on providing the same platform.Stay flexible, to gather to various size groups, eg from 20 to 200 pax, if the venue is flexible.  Stay close to Singapore, and desaru has been identified; thanks to the thinkers and support from fellow members.

It is important to keep cost low, to encourage retirees and semi-retirees to participate. We have many rich and fairly rich members in the club, as well as those who are still working, and able to afford 4-5 star outdoor activities.  But, for many members, maintaining a group of friends during our SilverHairs years is important.

Lotus Desaru Hotel has been identified to provide retreats for members.  A new idea is now to offer opportunities for members and other Singaporean/PR to participate in this retreat.  This opens the possibility of a wider membership, and expanding what we currently offer to members to Singapore as a whole.  I do not have all the ideas and plans, but you can help to add ideas by giving your feedback.  If you wish to be part of this direction, have your say.

Current info suggests that there are a few ways to get to Desaru ie public bus to desaru, a ferry ride from Changi and then a short land ride to Desaru.  Driving is a common option but this requires organising. and finally a coach ride from woodlands MRT to Desaru.

Inndications suggest the price will be about SGD 100, to cover shared hotel room, breakfast, uncomplicated lunch and dinner, transport from JB to Desaru.  Not sure what it cost for the ferry; and the timing.

We can invite activities from our own members, and new corporate members.  May a good 2D1N to get to know one another and new ones too.

UPDATE NO: 5 (2/12/14)

Meeting Time:     8.45 am.   PLEASE BE PUNCTUAL.   BUS LEAVES AT 9.00 A.M.                                             SHARP.

Let’s all gather near the control station of Outram mrt station.   When you see the sign (above photo) you know you’ve landed correctly, lol!  Just remember it’s Exit A.

Just a couple of things to bring along to make yourself comfortable:

  • Bottle of water and Umbrella
  • Foldable bag/bag pack (for the shopaholic)
  • One small but useful detail – Hook (I know it’s old fashioned, but it’s practical!) – haha this is a shopping trip, betul?
  • Anything else?  Hat?

Have a good laugh, bear with me, folks – This EO is too detailed!

*****************************************************************************************************

Dear Friends,

Are you in the mood for this?   Finally the time has come.   Year end season seems to put one in a better mood, so let me try and do something good. Not surprising, I suppose – I’m kinda used to this kind of job for SHC lol!

Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, 6 Dec 14
Time: 8.30 am to 4.00 pm
Meeting Point: Outram MRT station

  1. Chee Cheong Fun factory
  2. Ointment Factory
  3. Lunch
  4. Wheat Grass & Mushroom Farm
  5. Vegetable Farm

Charge per pax: $6.50 per pax.
Number: 30 pax

Lunch is at our own expense.

I remember I went on this trip a long time ago, and the chee cheong fun was the most fun thing that I picked up which was the best purchase cos it was relished the following morning for breakfast, and this stayed on in my mind until now!

Ok that’s all for the moment, rushing off for my lunch. Thought I’d rush this off first – hope to get the trip confirmed asap.

You can sign up now but I’ll need someone to be Treasurer.

By the way, the coach company says the stops can be subject to change without notice – in case there are unforseen changes to the places of visit which are out of their control.

Thank you.
****************************************************
1st Update 13/11/14

  1. Closing date for registration is 22 Nov.
  2. Need to get 30 paxes @ $6.50 each. If group is smaller than that, regret the company will not be able to proceed.
  3. Places will be reserved to people who have paid, preferably immediately (after I’ve given the bank account number); If no payment made by 19 Nov, places will be given to non-SHC participants.
  4. Please register asap – I will reserve for the first 30 only. Dont wait until the last day so I can conclude everything in good time. Thanks for your understanding!
  5. Original quote is $10.00 per pax but after negotiation, they have lowered it to $6.50. They do not provide tour guide. I will lead the group.
  6. Appreciate if I can have a volunteer for Treasurer.  This is not a profit-making event, so I hope that someone will help to share the load.   Sorry about that, but I’m working full time so I hope everybody understands and cooperate and I’ll be very happy to do more events if I get this kind of “goto royong” spirit.

2nd Update 14/11/14

Hurry hurry, so cheap for a whole day of “jiak hong” – better go before the coach towkay changes his mind about the charge for the next trip.  It’s true, I paid $340 about 10 years ago when I organised this for my friends.

The suppliers (usually wholesale) charge less for organised big groups going so we’ll get double bonus for this – cheap fare, cheap shopping, haha….

Treasurer, treasurer, where are you?

3rd Update

Excellent.  We’ve got 33 registered which include 3 non-SHC members.   Dolly, thank you so much for your great spirit of coming forward to be Treasurer.  Now, we can start the ball rolling with the collection, so we’ll wait to hear from Dolly.   Please try and pool together at least 3 – 5 shares per transfer if possible because it’s such a small sum per pax, and Dolly will just have to track fewer entries in her account instead of 35.

4th Update

Hello, it’s me again.    it’s countdown to this Saturday, time to come out from hibernation and get back to work.

I’ll be going to Outram mrt station this evening after work to recce the bus pick-up site and let you know exactly where it is near Outram mrt station.

Let you know tomorrow,OK?  Cheers!

***********************************************************************************************

I can have 2 more SHC members to round off to 35.   Payment made is non-refundable, I hope you understand.

Thank you folks for your speedy registration.   Cheers!

Monthly walk: 11October – Fort Canning Park

Posted on behalf of Alice.

Date : Saturday, 11 October 2014
Time : 4.00 pm
Nearest MRT : Dhoby Ghaut station
Meeting Place: Park Mall, main entrance
Duration: 2 hrs
ECs : Alice Seah and Judy Lim

This month we will be walking in Fort Canning Park. Before November 1981
it was named Fort Canning Hill or “Forbidden Hill” in Malay. Since the
14th century many Singapore rulers and colonial masters have lived here,
including Sir Stamford Raffles. It was an important military base during
World War II.

Fort Canning Park is undulating and about 60 metres high. Remnants and
relics of bygone eras are around. There’s a Spice Garden, previously
Singapore’s first experimental and botanic garden. The tranquil ambience
together with diverse flora and fauna makes the walk interesting. You will
appreciate the beautiful sculptures completed by various artists.
Many cultural and recreational activities are held here.

Note: Bring water, caps, umbrella and wear comfortable walking shoes.
