Riding Passion: SHCians Go HIR!

Wanna know where the 6 crazy SHCians were last night from 10pm - 5am?  We embarked on a "60Km: Half Island Ride" from 28 June - 29 June.

We cycled from ECP MacD - Fort Rd - Nicholl Highway - Shenton Way - Telok Blangah Rd -passed by VIVO city and reached Labrador Park at 11:45pm for break.  At 12am, we proceeded to West Coast Highway - Jalan Buroh - Jurong Port Rd.  We arrived Yuan Ching MacD at 1:30am and took a 20-30m break.

About 2am, we moved on to Boon Lay Way - Ulu Pandan Park Connector, passed by Jurong East Central - Clementi - Commonwealth Ave - Alexandra Rd - Havelock Rd - Eu Tong Sen - Victoria Street.  We rested at nearby Allson Hotel.

We journeyed on our last segment from Victoria Street - Nicoll Highway - Stadium Rd - Tg Rhu completing the ride back to ECP MacD with the first batch landed their firing bum at 4:45am.

Throughout the 60km+ journey, we have had a mixture of feelings - fear, excitement and ultimately, the adrenaline of a new challenge.  We were riding alongside vehicles along the busy hubs, highways and were treated to the night sights and sounds of Singapore.

To feel the wind rushing against our faces was an unforgettable experience and together with the good companionship of SHCian cyclists, it was indeed a treat away from our normal hectic and stressful lifestyle.  To top it off, we were blessed with a breezy and cooling night weather which made the ride all the more memorable.  It was a ride forever etched in our memories.

Despite some of us have initial doubts about our BODY and SOUL adjustment. No doubt, we SHCians have proven  that we are still able to keep up with the stamina and stay awake!  In fact, we did it with much enthusiasm and rewarded with a thrill experience!

So, Comrades! Are you still game to join me for the next biggest challenge of "Round Island Ride of 120km?

By the way, we started our Adventure Riding this year.  Those who missed the boat can do a search under "cycling/riding passion/outdoor activities" on the following:

1. ‘Lou Hei ride on 16 Feb 08

2. Explore Park Connector: Tanah Merah-Bedok area - Pasir Ris Park on 23 Feb 08

3. Have Passport will ride to JB, Tg Pengerang on 12 Apr 08

4. National Runway at Paya Lebar Air Force on 25 May 08

5. PIP….

We are reviving our Riding Passion to regain the momentum with a regular long distance cycling workout.  We LOVE to see more SHCians who are as passionate and crazy about adventure cycling to explore places together with us:

  • Tentative date: 26 July 08, Saturday (postpone)
  • Meeting Time: 5pm at ECP MacD bicycle Kiosk
  • Route: Eastern Coastal Park Connector (detour, refer to email)
  • Workout > Dinner > Workout >Supper/Balek Kampung!

The usual riders are:  (own Bike) Rene Leong/Douglas Chan/Boon Liang & (rent bike) Joyce Tan….

Coming are: (own Bike) Kathryn Lee/ (rent bike) Mike, Alicia, Ros White, Teresa Huang, John Seah, Ronald Wie, Dave Tan

Anyone game for the adventure…please write here or email: rene.leong@gmail.com if you have some questions.

NB:*This is not a DUPLICATION of Monthly Leisure cycling for amateur "L" plate.  This is an adventurous sport.   Basically, it requires some thigh conditioning.

Cheers,

Rene and Douglas

Jamming, making music of early 70s, for fun.

Last year,  me , Daniel and someone started jamming , me on guitar, Dan on drums and that someone on organ.   However,  Daniel found someone and together they played  better music in a lovely and captivating way that drove him to live overseas almost immediately.

To make the story short, I happened to have met another friend who was the drummer when we jammed in the early 70’s playing song by Eagles, early rock, etc. He is still keen on jamming for fun and so am looking for anyone who plays any instrument  to jam for fun with us, once in a while.  Cheers

Air Scouts and flying ?

Hi all,

I happened to have met 2 gentlemen that sort of rekindled something I  have always wanted to try.   That is the cheapest way to fly, on ultralight plane that is basically the lghtest plane with a motor to fly.

I learned that you can attend a 5 days course  and learn from absolutely zero knowledge/experience and on day 5 you will be able to take off and fly solo. Such packages are available in JB or in Pattaya and it includes not only the training , lodging but also insurance.

Also I have heard of Boy scouts, Sea scouts but not Air scouts ?  What air scouts do is the same as most scouts except they learn about flying and may also do some flying on small planes.  Well if anyone has such interest or are involved or planning on such trips , I would like to learn more. Cheers.

What is a SHC activity?

Here, I guess, we need your feedback?  In my mind, a SHC activity is organised by SHCian, for SHCians only.  Not for children or friends.  Strictly for SHC members only.   In this way, when members attend the activity, he/she would not see children, friends or other members of the public.

As an Event Organiser, the EO is free to decide if he/she opens the activity to friends, children or public.  However, the EO cannot give the impression that this is a SHC activity.

I open this topic for discussion until end of July 2008.

Looking for working partner

Hello All,

My name is Kathryn, I am quite new to the Club.  Met some members during the recent cycling event on Saturday at ECP.

I operate a small therapy centre (alternate treatment through biological cell regeneration) at Depot Road.  I am looking for someone - kind of a Working Partner, not in the business registration, more of sharing the same premises and able to complement each other’s services.  I am not looking to recruit.  I am wondering if there could be a SHC member who is retiring or retired, or even sick of being an employee and is thinking of a change and take a slower pace.  I quit my job and started this biz (took a big risk)  about 1.5 years ago after I discovered the “job satisfaction” the work brought when I saw the joy and appreciation on the faces of the “patients”  especially when they have been suffering for months to years.

If you are a therapist or in the health biz, wants to strike it out on your own, perhaps we can have a chat.  Preferred line of services would be Reflexology, Tuina, Physiotherapy, Facial, nails or even yoga, etc  Even if you have been a Physiotherapy Assistant and possess the required knowledge and skills, we might be able to work together especially for people strickened with stroke.

Hope to find someone out there with similar interest in this field (just as I have found a skating/cycling partner) in SHC.

Best of Health, Health is Wealth

Kathryn Lee

Ps: Terence, hope I have not infringed any Rules & Regulations of the Club, I have been trying to find someone genuinely keen to “treat” people not just make $$$$.  Of course, we need to make enough to cover costs and living expenses.

Campervanning in Australia

Hi All

Is anyone interested in joining in this adventure experience next year?So far, Esther has expressed interest. We met in S’pore during the vegetarian lunch at Chinatown Point. The others are self, hubby and his cousin. So 3 of us are from Perth. We have no experience in campervanning nor even self-drives outside WA. So any tips or interest in joining up, especially if there are a few campervans will be fun.

A campervan is a vehicle which you drive and has sleeping berths, toilet, shower, cooking facilities etc. It’s not a caravan which you tow and is preferred by some. With a campervan, you can stop to take rest, save a bit on motels and cook your own simple meals. It can take 2 - 6 people, depending on range and price.

To cut petrol costs, we fly 1 way and drive 1 way between Melbourne and Adelaide. From Melbourne, we can drive to Canberra, Sydney and explore the outback - Ayers Rock, Alice Springs etc and make our way back to Melbourne.

So if anyone is game or has tips to offer, I welcome comments. The 3-4 week trip is planned for Mar/Apr 2009.

Regards

Joan (Perth)

New Pictures Manager on SHC Forum

Hi everybody,

We will continue with the current format of displaying photographs of approved events, organised by Event Organisers.  However, I have not been efficient, as the framing, layout and uploading require me to be in Singapore.  My little PDA  would take years to upload 30 photographs; and I cannot see the photos clearly.  This delay causes some exciety at times.

I have thought of creating a new role called SHC Pictures Manager.  The role would require the Pictures Manager to receive digital photographs from approved Event Organisers, layout the pictures as per current format, auto correct for brightness and finally uploading the photographs to the SHC website.

The Pictures Manager has the right to delete and decide if the photographs are suitable material.  No editing task will be required in this role.  To enable photographs to be published, the rules of SHC will apply.

The role will last one year, at for the first time, the role will last till end Dec 2009.  Let’s welcome our first Pictures Manager.

A heartfelt decision you have to make

You are a taxi driver. You are heading home in the early hours of the morning. The back of your car is full but the front seat can sit just one more. Along the way, you see three persons waving desperately to stop your taxi.

  1. A lady with a baby in her arms. The baby appears sick.
  2. Your old buddy, a bus driver, apparently late for his morning shift,
  3. Your daughter, tipsy and staggering after a night out at the pub.

Who would you pick and what should you do? emoticon

Loving Country Line Dance and Country music

Hi all those who are really keen or also enjoy it,

The Country line Dance Association of Spore have their weekly Friday jams at Far East square on Fridays and at the Paya Lebar Post centre on Sunday from around 7pm to 10pm.

If you join them as members for $35, you only pay $1 everytime you join their jams, else it will be $3 each jam for non-members.

For those who are really keen and staying around Braddle, there is a lady who sort of run through the Friday’s list of dances on Wed at about 8pm at her condo air con common room.  If you are keen to really join as a CLDA member and learn and join  the Wed class (which is free, except for  $5 monthly charge for the hall), you have to also at least attend one of the weekly jams.  Only restricrted number of  slots available and this is more for those who are already past their basic line dance, can email me for more info.

I am keen to enjoy line dancing again and listening to good old country songs and this group really plays the really nice old country songs with equally nice dance steps.  So am inviting those who share the same interest to join me.

I am also calling all those who wants to have a country line dance jam to meet on Sept 12 Eve at the NSRC bungalow, and we will play all the songs that the past SHC line dancers from  the  D n Ds have learnt.   All the songs right from ‘Saturday night fever’ , Baby hit me one more time, Pizzirico,  Cowboy Cha cha, Thai song -  to Sway Me now and Soli, and others that we have learnt.  So to all those dancers staying at the East and West try to form you own class to revise (you have 3 months)  and let us have this jam .

Also welcome if anyone wants to sing Karaoke on any of these songs but you have to bring your own Karoake version of the Cd.  You are also free to request to dance any song, but please provide the dance sheet and song so that I can cc to all those who are keen.

Cheers , let us have real good country dance night, maybe dress in country style and have a simple barbecue by East coast too.  Dan Huang if you want to dance and sing ‘Your Cheating heart you are welcome’ but please also organise your Sat Dance on the 13 Sept. Cheers , and howdy to all those cow girls and boys, or ladies and men.

The Unsung Benefits of Wine

If health came in a bottle, it would create mayhem at the local market. As people threw elbows and ran over one another with rabid shopping carts, bottles of health would fly off the shelves, secured in the clenched grip of hissing customers. People would push, shove, and use props - such as a crying child or a seeing-eye dog - to get their hands on this product. A bottle of health would be a best seller. While it might not be a bottle of health, per say, a bottle of wine is the next best thing.

Those of us who are wine drinkers all know that red wine benefits the heart and white wine benefits the lungs. But, what we might not know is that the health benefits don’t stop there…not even close. The health benefits of wine transcend the human body, refusing to develop a monogamous relationship with any one part.

The following is a list of the unobvious ways wine is helping you or has the potential to help you in the future. They all exist in an underground world of unsung wine benefits, where grapes anxiously wait for their day in the sun.

Extreme Weight Problems: While the term "beer belly" may have given alcohol a bad rap when it comes to weight, wine is actually proven to help the severely overweight. In order for this to be true, dry wine, wine that does not contain sugar, needs to be ingested: four or five ounces are taken at dinnertime or bedtime. In one study, the average weight loss of those who ingested this wine was twice that of those who didn’t. Along these lines, because wine helps with anxiety and ridding the body of tension, it has also helped those who suffer, on the other end of the weight spectrum, from anorexia.

Old Age: Old age is not a disease, but an affliction to our health nonetheless. Still, it’s an affliction those of us in youth hope to someday procure. While growing old can bring about all kinds of problems, wine can aid in their relief. For starters, wine decreases the dependency on certain medications, particularly medications that relax and sedate people. Wine has also proven to increase appetites, self-esteem and social lives of those in old age.

Intelligence: On an average basis, people who moderately consume wine are of higher education levels than those who don’t drink alcohol or drink far too much. This isn’t to say that you should, Merlot in hand, roll your eyes at the idiocy of someone drinking a beer, but it’s reassuring to know wine drinkers are in good, and smart, company.

Bone Strength: Bone strength may be of little concern to those who are young, but it’s extremely important in advanced age: a skeletal build with low density will have a bone to pick with its owner when Osteoporosis sets in. Men and women who are moderate wine drinkers, however, generally have bones that are denser than non-drinkers: the greater the density, the less likely the fractures.

Cancer: Red wine, filled with antioxidants, is proven to be a liquid nemesis of cancer, preventing it before it can fester. Packed with strong compounds, wine is laden with protective affects. In fact, the CDC found that women who averaged 12 glasses of wine per week were rewarded with an 83 percent decrease in endometrial cancer rates.

Kidney cancer, along these lines, seems to have found an enemy in alcohol. According to a study conducted in Sweden by Dr. Alicja Wolk of the Karolinska Institute, women who drank moderate amounts of alcohol had a 38 percent lower kidney cancer risk than those who didn’t. For women 55 and older, the risk of kidney cancer was cut to 66 percent.

Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes, non-insulin diabetes that usually develops with age, is less likely to attack those who are moderate drinkers. Because the majority of people who get type 2 diabetes are women, a study was recently performed by Dr. Michael L. Bots at the University Medical Center Utrecht. During this study it was revealed that women who consumed 5 to 30 grams of alcohol per week were not as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as those who abstained completely.

While it is often lauded for the way it benefits the heart and the lungs, wine, the over achiever of alcohol, doesn’t just stop there. From your mind to your ankle bone, wine provides a glassful of benefits. And, what’s more, these are the only ones known so far. As the wine revolution gains even more ground, and more studies are performed, the benefits of wine may continue to be increasingly known, pouring good health on all who consume it.
