New Year Resolutions, Reflections, RV plans, dreams, etc

Hi Terence and all,

Reflecting on our RV plans of the past which have not materialise, I cannot help but to post this idea of an RV alternative.  I am looking to rent a condo unit either in JB or even Malacca  that can be a 2nd home for me, as I think it wil be much cheaper living there.   So I am  thinking of renting such a unit that is within easy reach of public transport and is in a good safe location.

I am prepared to let out a room/rooms for SHC members for overnight stay either enjoying shopping, massage, makan or even for overnight MJ or for travel stops on their way up north.  This condo unit should or will be set up with cable tv, internet  and all necessary facilities like washing machine, kitchen for cooking etc.  This idea came about too from the very good response of my weekly JB trips that I had at times had to make 2 trips in a week.

So anyone in a group wanting to really feel what is like staying in JB can book the room at a very reasonable cost to stay over for a night or for as long as they want.

Will also welcome any ideas to expand such a plan, as I think  there are quite a few things one can enjoy in nearby JB besides the cheaper food, massage, karaoke, dancing, hair styling, tailoring, car services etc, is the slower pace of life there, or taking up cheaper courses in JB.  Some special courses that cost $3000 in Singapore cost the same amount in M$3000 and therefore can be quite a saving.

Cheers

Looking for two SMS system managers

I am looking for two SMS managers to look after the operations of the SMS system.  The job is easy, if I can do it, you can.  Here are the requirements.

Hardware and software:
You don’t need to, but if you know word, excel, this is useful.
You should have a PC, which is ON 24 hours a day.
A phone server with a SIM chip will be provided.  This is for SMS only.  Connection between phone server and PC will be wireless Bluetooth, all will be provided. The SMS software will also be provided.

Some basic IT sense:
You must understand simple rules, eg:
If you do this, then this will happen.
If you don’t do this, then that will happen.
You should know how to import and export files eg .csv files.
You must make effort to read simple manual instructions.
You love designing sms games.

Qualities:
Need to be patient and run your own trials test, until you understand.
Don’t keep calling me, especially when I am travelling.  I will go crazy.

People skills:
You must be familiar with the most of the visible members.
You should be willing to communicate with them via email, especially kakis groups and kakis organisers.
You need to visit the server, at least once a day, to ensure the phone server and the PC are still alive.

Expenses:
All SMS expenses will be absorbed by SilverHairsClub.  You need to be prudent with SMS costs.  No outside work except SilverHairsClub.

Expectations:
You have to maintain 100% confidentiality with all tel numbers and other contact information.  This is extremely important, and breach of this will not be accepted.
This is hard work, but after a few months, the job will be easy.  Unfortunately, as SilverHairsClub is free, your service will be free.

Term:  There will be two SMS managers.  Essentially to backup one another.  The term will be two years.

I envisage the two appointments will start 1st July 2008 2009.  And will start in two stages.

Stage 1: starting and maintaining the kakis groups. Jan – Mar
Stage 2: 3 mths to learn and trial the system. Apr – Jun.

If you think you would like to take this task, plse raise your hand.

A likely trip to Perth in Mar/Apr 2009

The fishing adventure on a kelong seemed to have been invaded by a likely trip to Perth.  So, let’s start a new Post here.

Joan, Mary, Hou Chong, assuming we have a group of say 7 – 14 pax coming to Perth, and of course, besides meeting you and catching fishes and abalones, we also like to travel south, along the coast and then back to South Perth.  Assuming we come to Perth in Mar or Apr this year.

Assuming we are all blur kings, what would be reasonable form of accommodation and transportation to move around Perth and the southern coastal towns.  If my memories are right, I once took a 7-seater, so an ideal target would be 7 – 14 pax.  I have a preference for a large single house.

Todate date, Jetstar airways are around $420, all tax inclusive.

What do you think are the possibilities of large accommodation, with flexibility to contain 7 – 14 people, with cooking facilities, laundry facilities, a garage, jogging track, a romantic facing of Perth city or a quiet feeling of the ideal retirement, facing a part of the swan river.

Guys, gals, keep the chat on the Perth trip here.  And, if you join the trip, you will be very loved if you can take some hard work like can you drive a 7 seater, be left side navigator, cook spagetthi or hae mee,  prepare eggs, bacon and toast for breakfast, do shopping eg buy orange juice in a supermarket,  go buy the morning newspapers, or clean the car, walk the dog, think of coming to Perth.

Or if you are thinking of 3 month short term retirement living in Perth, consider joining this likely trip and start putting  more money in the kitty box.  I hope we can make this an annual adventure, and meet up with our friends from Singapore.

Terence Seah

Indications (only) of interest to come for this trip:

  1. Terence Seah – (wk of 5 Apr), and lead driver.
  2. Lily Ho – can only give instructions, turn left and turn right.
  3. James Tan – (Week of 15 Mar). Main driver for second car.  Driven in US thousands of miles from California and everywhere.  Hopeless navigator.  Recent cataract.  Can cook fried rice/fried noodles, Terayaki chicken and bee.  Useless when it comes to fishing.  So must go supermarket.
  4. Norhayati  – can only cook maggie mee.  I think can wash car too.
  5. Patrick Lee – He needs a GPS.  Guess can co-drive. (week 15 Mar), can be lead driver.

  9. Ronald Wie – Jie trusts Ronald, he can drive left or right side.  So, can drive.  Cannot cook. Prefers to go Perth on another date.
  10. Nancy Major Tan – Can drive, but not navigate.  Careful she said short journey only.  Sounds like a great own style spagetti cook,  simple chinese dishes eg curry chicken or nasi lemak ok.

  11. Oi Cheng – hopeless driver or navigator.  But, at least can cook nice dishes.
  12. Karen Thio – cannot do anything.  Just want to be with fun ppl.  When did we start using short forms like ppl?
  13. Grace Wong – ooh, sure can cook, can wash, but I suspect we should share the kitchen washing.
  14. Charles Chua – a driver alright.  Prefers to leave the maggie mee cookers.
  15. Raymond Low – another co-driver.  A golf kaki too.  Any golf kakis enthusiast?
  16. Philip Wee – hoping to join us if the dates are right.  Hope he can do something.
  17. Priscillia Wee –  Hope she can do something too. last tri[ 1983.

  29. Kristin Leong – (wk of 29 Mar or 5 Apr).  Not sure can do what.
  30. Venika Leong – (Anytime), so nice to volunteer as chicken helper.  No body wants this job.
  31. Helen Wong – (Week of 29 Mar or 5 Apr), did say what she can do?
  32. Neo Seok Cheng – (any week except 7 – 15 of mth), can do breakfast.

For the love of fishing at a kelong

Some of us like fishing from the Bedok jetty.  Others like pond fishing.  Brave ones go out and catch the big marlins.  Not so brave ones put their feet into a tub and enjoy rainbow fishes ravishing at their old skin.

We had a kelong outing, a few years ago.  SB Khoo caught a plate-size grouper.  Cannot remember, but RonaldLai caught a really tiny one.  Others just love the mahjong table.  I enjoy sleeping at the edge of the kelong, counting the stars after a couple of beers.

We are not going kelong fishing in this post.  But, if you have gone fishing in the last 12 months, share with us your experience, where you went to, what you got, what you ate, and how much did you spend.

Maybe, something might surface from your experience.  You never know.  Dont be shy.

US dollar has begun to fall. What ‘s its impact on Singapore?

US fed reserve has just slashed its benchmark Fed funds rates to near zero.  This signals the US readiness to keep rates low for some periods of time.  With further contraction of the US economy and further deflationary pressures, banks have been charging one another below 0.5% for overnight loans.  All tools have been tried.  What else is there to try?

Where will the Sing dollar be heading towards?  Please share your thoughts on the impact on Singapore.

Charity Event – Jan 24’2009 (Lunch)

Hi SHCians,

A few of us were discussing couple of weeks back that we intend to organise Charity Event before the CNY for those old and needy folks so that they are also able to enjoy the joy of CNY festive season.

We will be arranging a buffet lunch for about 200paxs (this cost had been taken care of) and was hoping that we can get more sponsors to give them a small goodies bag containing 1 pkg of biscuit, 1 tin of small milo and 1 small angpow so that they

Besides the usual helpers to help out in the distribution of meals to them.  I am also hoping that some of you can come forward to perform some entertainment items for them, i.e. sing song, line dancing or social dancing – Any volunteers for this showtime, pls come forward to help to make this a joyous occasion for these folks… :)

But since I hv limited cash flow on hand, I might not able to cater any lunches for all of you, so I really hope that all of you dont mind paying the lunch at your own expense.

This Event will be held on:

Date : January 24’2009 (Saturday)
Time : 12.30 – 3.30pm (Lunch will provided for those old and needy)
Venue: Church of the Nativity at the basement of the Community Hall
Address: 1259 Upper Serangoon Road (ard Hougang Ave8)

Kind contribution can be make via Lum Oi Cheng POSB Saving A/C 117-00132-6.  Thanking you in advance for the kind generosity received.

CNY Tim Sum lunch – Feb 2009

Each year, we try to go out for lunch during the Lunar New Year festive season.  I believe a Tim Sum lunch with Chinese tea would be great.  Last year, we held ours at the Fortunate restaurant in Tao Payoh.  After the lunch, the groups went out for further more private get-togethers.

To read about last year’s CNY lunch, click here.  https://silverhairsclub.com/2008/02/1395.

I am a believer we should keep the cost down; so as a target, we should try to keep to last year’s cost.  This way, we can get more people to attend.  We should continue to have our bear hug when we meet one another.  Fortunate restaurant is fantastic.  Of course, we can have the lunch at the Red restaurant.  Can even be held in Chinatown.  It’s great on the mood and the season.  Oranges of the same size, eyes facing up, everybody in red, ladies with pony tails and guys in china slippers.  We could target 50 pax.

Would you like to be the Event Organiser?  Let’s bring in the new year.

A fast way to contact dancers via SMS

Let’s say you have organised a dancing event for this Saturday night.  And you would like to contact other SHCians who love dancing.   So, you write a Post, inviting members to attend.  Then, you complain that this website does not permit telephone numbers to be published.  And, not everybody reads this website every week.  So, some would miss out on the event.

Well, the Event Organiser can now inform "Registered and Interested" dancers via the SHC sms system.  Here’s how I think it can be done.

  1. The Event Organiser must be a familiar face at SHC monthly gatherings; and members know him/her.  Must have been a SHC member for at least 6 months.  Your date of joining is prefixed to your registered name.
  2. The Event Organiser must write a Post on the dance event, on this website.  If needed, the EO can request Admin to send an sms to inform the registered dance group.
  3. All SHCians who love to be informed of any dancing event can register their names with the sms server.  Those who do not register will NOT receive the SMS.  You can de-register anytime.  For more details of the dance event, the member must still check the Post on this website.  How?  I shall inform you this week.

Notes:

  • SHC will not release any telephone numbers of members.  Members will only be informed via SMS; the EO will not know your telephone number.
  • The EO will have to compose and send the SMS message to me, max 120 characters.

This service will also be made available to other sports, hobbies or interest groups, if there is sufficient interest.   Strictly no politics, race, sex, religion, direct selling and MLM.

SHC Annual Dinner & Dance – likely 4 Apr 2009

Our 3rd Annual dinner & Dance is planned to run in Mar 2009.  Nothing has been decided yet.  We have not identified the Event Organiser, the venue or even the dates.

If you are eager and cannot get your hands itchy to be the Event Organiser, please raise your hands.  We can let you decide on the program, the committee and the theme.  It’s all up to the EO to dream.  Only two things that the EO needs to clear with me – the place and cost.  The place must be conveniently accessible by public transport, and the cost must be more than reasonable.

To read about last year’s D&D, click here.

All to all SHCians, you are free to offer suggestions and ideas.  Final decision goes to the EO.  So, let’s get started, we have three months.

N. Gengha Dhevi – Profile

Hello,

I am Dhevi and I have just joined the SHCians.  I am glad to know that I would be able to find new friends who share the same interests in this club. I read about the club and I am very happy that I am going to be a member of it.  I am a jolly person, happy go lucky type.

I am 48 years old and I have been working in the Armed Forces as a DXO- in the Administration line for about 30 years.    Dancing is my passion; I love to cycle despite my knee problem; and I absolutely love to travel.  I am a working mother with 3 children; My Hubby (Mr. Sekaran ) is already a member in your club.

My aim now is to meet up and get to know as many friends as possible and also looking forward to the tours organized by the club so that I can travel to many places as age is catching up.   I would also like to participate in SHC activities whenever possible. I assure you that I will actively take part in SHC’s activities.
And lastly I would like to thank Mr Terence Seah who initiated the thought of creating “The SilverHairsClub”

Yours sincerely,
Dhevi

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year 2009

Hi all,

Have we forgotten how to wish, dream and to have faith?

If we did, let us try to put some cheer to others around us in any way we can.  So here is wishing everyone a MERRY XMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009, and le us try to count our blessings no matter how little it may be now and hope things gets better.

Terence, seems a little too quiet for you to be alone this holiday, call me to join a group of us going to JB for a makan spree this Sunday.

Cheers

Going to Batam 7/8 Dec 2008

I am thinking of going to Batam on a 2D/1N holiday. Will only stay within the hotel compound. Just to breathe some fresh, maybe be naughty a bit and enjoy some beers or whiskies. Do nothing. Start early Sunday and return Monday late afternoon.

Anyone interested or any suggestions for hotels or bookings? I am 99% sure of going.

Today’s news reports

So much has happened lately; carnage in Mumbai; Bangkok’s airports chaos & of course the on-going financial crisis. I shed tears everytime I read the daily reports of the senseless loss of Ms. Lo Hwei Yen in Mumbai. The pain felt by her immediate families and loved ones and even those who don’t know her is indescribable. How tragic.

On a more uplifting front is the return to normalcy of the Bangkok airports and especially heartening to know that our fellow SHCians are all home safe and sound. Your families must be happy & relieved!

Today in the Mind Your Body segment is an interesting article "Ageing In Style" written by Gary Hayden. He also quote an interesting poem by Samuel Ullman: ‘Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideas. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul’. The hale & hearty ways some of the SHCians displayed here are so true to this poem. These members are out to have a good time and at the same time they are ‘spreading’ their enthusiasm to other members. These members know who you are – so give yourselves a pat on the back!

Here’s wishing all a Happy, Healthy and SAFE New Year.  Cheers, fellow SHC members.

Do you know of a place to hold small talks?

We have always been looking for small places to hold talks.  But very often, the venue does not give us the flexibility or the tools to hold small talks.  Please look around; and if you have some suggestions for a avenue which fits our needs, please raise your hand.

  • Installed equipment included overhead projectors, screens, TV, with notebook connections, internet access (preferably wireless), microphones.
  • Seating capacity of 20 – 40 pax.
  • Very flexible with numbers.  This could be an existing cafe or lounge.
  • Ideally, no charge for the use of the venue.  The venue should have its own F&B.
  • Located close to MRT and public transport.

Know of such a place?  Terence Seah

Majong game (2 tables) cum pot-luck get-together dinner at place, Kembangan (east side) on Sat 27 Dec 2008 1pm – 10pm

A Blessed, Merry, Joyous X’mas and A Happy, Healthy, Peaceful New Year – 2009 to one and all. To encourage further interaction among SHians, I would like to organize a majong game (2 tables) cum pot-luck get-together dinner at my place, Kembangan (east side) on Saturday, 27 Dec 2008 from 1pm till 10pm.

However, due to certain constrains, I have to limit it to 15 people. Basic needs like water and paper crockery will be provided. I shall contribute more than one dish. So folks, those who are interested and able to make it please email me at janlo8@gmail.com

State the dish you would like to contribute, play mj or not and contact number as I’ve to coordinate. Hurry, first come first served. Have fun, get to know more friends- don’t worry, be merry. Hee,hee.

Humble apologiies to those unable to come or late ‘registration’. Hope the response to this  ‘invitation’ at this festival season is good.

Cheers one and all. Yam Seng…..Pop goes the champagne. Ha, Ha, (Cheeky Jane)
