Bhangra classes

Hi all
Thanks to those who came for the Bhangra try-out!  The lady instuctor had quoted me for the classes (see below).  Venue for holding the class will be charged seperately. She prefers to hold the classes at CCs.  I have actually checked with my CC and they don’t rent out classrooms.  Perhaps some of you may have other suggestions.
  • Cost: $70/hr for 5-7 people or $90/hr for 8 people and above
  • Duration: 1 hour is the average time most people can handle for bhangra aerobics
  • Day: Saturdays are good and time is flexible and will be decided by participants
  • Venue: CC would be best choice or alternative place if you can find
Thank you and have a good day!

A joget event

There can never be enough events to satisfy the diets of SHCians.  Many SHCians have played their part to be EOs.  Some are waiting to be EOs while some think the EO’s queue is just too long.

We have many events; except for the joget event which has been discussed frequently, but hmm, the idea seems to twinkle and twinkle each time we talk about it.  Let’s have a grand joget event.

Tinkle, tinkle?

Online trading chit chats – every Tues and Thurs

It’s been a long time since we chat about online trading.  In our earlier days, we had talks on shares and currency markets.  We had speakers. Small groups were formed and some are still on-going.  Our good old Ben Foo used to conduct online trading courses.  A number of SHCians trade online on a daily basis.  Some make some money; others, we will never know.

I just spotted a new member reviving an old post by Ronald Wie.  It was titled "Group strategy" vs "Individual investor".  Maybe this would have made a lot more sense than the title itself.  I wonder how many SHCians are doing online trading, be it stocks or currencies.

The MPH cafe is pretty quiet in the afternoon, and ideal to discuss online trading tips.  There is WIFI connection, so you can have a good internet link with your broker’s server.  For a start, I like to invite 4-5 SHCians to come together, link up to their own broker’s server and share and enjoy trading tips.  So sorry, the cafe has only one or two power points.

My office is just two blocks away; so I shall come and see see.  Rene is also there; so she can learn from the more experienced ones.

Days:  Every Tuesday and Thursday, 2pm to 5pm sharp; except public holidays.  It starts after 2pm as lunch hours would be over then.

If you are keen to share online trading knowledge, tips, warnings and surprises, please register your name here, so we can expect your coming and allocate a corner for you.

Do you have a venue to recommend for future SHC monthly gatherings?

For many moons, we have been using Hans at Great Eastern as our venue for the monthly gatherings.  I think it is still an ideal place.

  1. It can take in any number of people, from 50 to 200 pax.
  2. The venue serves drinks and food, so catering is no issue.
  3. Pax guarantee is not required.
  4. Pretty central, opens every day.

But, are you able to recommend another place, with similar flexibility as Hans?

World Cup games and draw results 2010

I am useless when it comes to football. But, I do know that the World Cup draws the attention of half the world.

Spain has not been beaten in 26 games.  Only 7 teams have ever won the World Cup.  They are Uraguay, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany, England and France.

Current holders are Italy.  Best African team is Ivory Coast.  Best team never to win the cup is Holland.  Worst is New Zealand.

Please see if you can think and work out a World Cup game for us to follow through.  I think it will be enjoyable.  Then, we can all play.

Like to be interviewed by ST Lifestyle on your silver lifestyl?

Usually, whenever I get a request from the media, I lose no opportunity to keep SHCians informed.  Some of us love the limelight.  So, if you like to be interviewed, hands up please.

A journalist from Straits Times Life! and LifeStyle is currently working on a story about silver industry businesses, and she thought that she might be able to get some help from our club.

  1. She is interested to find out if we know of some businesses (health, gym, yoga, travel, beauty, sports) that offer special discounts or packages for people 45 and above?
  2. She would also like to interview SHCians who take up such offers.

Yes, anybody?  Some comments from you, and I shall put  you in touch with the journalist.

A refreshing swim this Sunday morning?

Like to have a fresh morning swim at the Changi Beach Club? I have been a hopeless non-user of the club, going there twice a year.

I will be there at 9am and will leave at 12nn. Plan to relax on a Sunday morning, watching Pulau Ubin island from mainly Singapore and keeping an eye for cute little submarines swimming in the straits. If you like to come, I will sign you in.

Am not sure about breakfast, but wise to tah pau a packet of nasi lemak and tea. Don’t want u to be hungry.

So, suntan lotion, trunks or costumes. As this is a private and non-SHC event, you may bring your kids or grand-kids. But must let me know how many.

Just a suggestion – a SHC travel club

Hi All

I wonder if there are SHCians interested in joining a sort of travel club within SHC – targetting those who are not keen to travel in package tours but may be travelling solo or perhaps in small groups.

I know  there had been several trips organised by some of you to places around. Maybe I’m thinking of something more structured instead of adhoc. This will allow better planning – eg a 6-12 mth programme schedule based on feedback from interested members. Can someone take this up as an interest area. It requires coordination and info gathering etc.

Eg outback tour to Uluru, Alice Springs and who may be interested as I am – in 2011 autumn/winter time (Apr- Aug).

Joan

Strictly for singles only

Over the last few years, some of you may have noticed that I have been increasing interested in the Dating industry. I attended courses conducted by SDU and the now SDN; and read tons of materials on dating services in Singapore and other countries. After having attended various courses, I note there were opportunities to develop dating as a service business. However, I have decided not to seek SDN funding, but instead to go along as time and space permit.

SilverHairsClub has been an interesting phenomenon. It was unplanned and definitely unchartered. However, SilverHairsClub has done well, simply as a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends. It was intended as a venue for SilverHairs to meet, and work their way through our golden years.

Obviously, there were pressures to focus on helping single SHCians find soulmates. As this was not its objective, I have resisted this all along, and let natural human forces work its way into our lives.

After almost 5 years, since the start of SilverHairsClub, I think I can work an extra mile to help single SHCian meet its longer life objective. Well, we may not be focusing on the “under 40” group. These are the people who can get married and have babies, and meet the nation’s objective. Finding a soulmate can be a natural process, but a little help would do no harm, if not, to speed up the process.

As dating is not a SilverHairsClub objective, I won’t dwell further on this subject on this forum. However, if you are single, I mean truly single, write to me. I would likely ask you for a lot of details, and find someone meeting your preferences. If and I mean if we find someone meeting your preferences, I would invite the parties to meet. Some details will be informed to you at a later date.

Some SHCians have expressed interested to work with me on this service. I am hoping to move along as we progress in this area. Simply email me, not on this forum.

Meantime, I would be launching something similar for Singaporeans and foreigners working in the Robinson Road and Shenton way areas. Social events will be organised. Single SHCians would be invited too.

So, go easy, and we move on slowly. Email me first at seahks@singnet.com.sg. Confidentially assured.

Stand-in roles for dancers

MediaCorp is currently producing a comedy cum drama about two grandfathers and their friends. In an episode of the series, there are scenes where one of the grandfather is a good ballroom dancer. However the actor acting is not a ballroom dancer and so they need a dancer to stand in as they are filming some dancing scenes. It is also looking for an Indian woman ballroom dancer to stand in for the actress acting as his partner.

Any senior members wanting to take up any of these two roles? The filming will take about 2-3 hours and Mediacorp will provide remuneration for the time taken.

Interested, plse contact me at terences@silverhairsclub.com for contact details.

Monthly Walk Saturday 8 May 2010 – Sembawang Park/Bottle Tree Village

Meeting Place: Sembawang MRT nearby control station by 4.15pm sharp

Duration:  about 1½ hours

For those who are driving, park at Car Park 2 near the front entrance of Sembawang Park.    Be there at 4.45pm to join group who will be arriving by bus from Sembawang Bus Interchange.

EOs for this walk :  Veronica Wong and Mary Tan

This is a straight forward walk, may not be the "cup of tea" for the adventurous.  The main objective is to enjoy the camaraderie.

Sembawang Park  situated in the north of Singapore is one of the few parks in Singapore with a natural beach, the Wak Hassan Beach.  A good hangout away from busy city life, for picnic or simply relax and enjoy the kampong ambience.  At the park entrance is the distinctive blue dice design.   We will take a leisure stroll at this park and explore the greenery of the park.
The Bottle Tree Village located rather away from the main road at the end of Jalan Mempurong, is another ulu ulu place where you get to see  Bottle Trees which had been imported from Australia by the owners.   Apart from the unique trees, other Australian flora can be spotted in the surroundings.  Andrew Avenue leading to this place, is a secluded road and surrounded by trees.   On the way, we will come across the Preserved Heritage Melayu Penempatan Mosque which was built in the1970s.  At the end of the road,  we will emerge into the Bottle Tree Village, a well established rustic village-like place.  There, we could look across the wide and vast sea of the Straits of Johore and enjoy the sea breeze.
Walk continues through the Simpang Kiri Park Connector which runs along Sungei Simpang Kiri, rich in natural vegetations on both sides of the riverbanks.  Enjoy a tranquil experience and try spotting the vast varieties of birds, ranging from water birds like the Kingfisher, Egrets and Water Hens to seasonal migratory birds such as sandpipers.  We will end the walk at Canberra Link to take Bus No 882 back to Sembawang Bus Interchange / MRT station.  Those who drive will take Bus No 882 from across the road  to Car Park 2 to collect their cars.  For those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the many eateries in Sun Plaza.
Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

See you at the walk!

Free Bhangra tryout

Is anyone interested to join me for a free Bhangra tryout on Sunday 1-2pm on level 5 of the Sikh Centre, next to Silat Road Sikh Temple. Opposite SGH and at the very beginning of Jalan Bukit Merah.

I’ve attached a map here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=8+Jalan+Bukit+Merah%2C++Singapore+169543%2C+Singapore%2C+Singapore

For those who interested to join their regular workout, you can join their class at Jln Bukit Merah or organize your own class.  They can provide an instructor for a class of 5-12 persons at $75 per session, so the more students you have, the cheaper the class will be.  We will have to find our own venue and that’s a seperate charge.

Do let me know by Saturday morning so I can let the instructor know how many of us are coming for the free tryout.

IT

We are not allowed to talk about SEX in this forum. Rightly so, or else it will degenerate into an XXX rated forum populated by dirty old man and old cows still in heat. So we will not discuss about the techniques and how best to enjoy SEX. In fact, we should not even use this dirty word. Let’s call it ’IT’.

When we were young and have a question about IT, we were suppose to ask our parents, teachers or any respectable older person. Now that we are all over 45, who do you ask if you have a question about IT?  Your parents may be senile if they are still alive.  You may now be the teacher yourself and suppose to come up with the answers. There are not many older person around, except in Silverhair clubs and the like. That is why I raise these questions here.

Is IT good for the health of older people? We are talking about both physical and mental well being here.

At what age should you stop IT?

Are there any difference between men and women?

Tiger Woods have been extraordinarily successful in golf, up till when he was discovered to have IT with too many women. My golf kakis said, that is why he has been successful and not so now that he cannot have more of IT. There is a report by a doctor who speculates that IT relaxes your muscles, calm your nerves and improves your concentration. But Tiger Woods is a young man. Would we have the same effect at our age and would it have the same effect on women?

It is generally believed that as we get older most of us gets grumpy and listless. But not  all. I wander if there is a correlation between happy older people and IT?

If you believe that IT is good for you, my next question is, would too much of IT kill you?  So how much is good for you?
