Here’s another dream for next year – a prom night

Some of us do know what is a prom night.  Maybe we dont have prom nights in Singapore.  Most of the time, we hear and see prom night movies from the US and UK.  Remember, Olivia Newton John in Grease?  Remember High School days, end of school term.  Did you come from a co-ed school or all boys or all girls school?  Now, nevermind, if you have not been to one.  So, let’s dream ahead for a new year event.

Well, if we are all over 45 years now, then the popularity of prom nights must be some 30 – 35 years ago.  Gee, wouldnt it be nice if we can have a prom night for SHCians?  I can just imagine the boys would be dressed in striped long sleeves with straps for the pants, in case they drop off.  The hair would be moosed, pointing towards the sky.  The girls would be wearing mini-skirts, 4 inches above the knee.  The hair would be pleated or maybe just pony-tailed.  And, glossy red lip sticks.

Hmm, the idea dreams only.  Ah Ha, entrance tickets would be sold.  Every end-of-term girl or boy would have to sell tickets.  Maybe to raise money for a new school gym.  And if prom nights are what they are supposed to be, the girls have to bring their partners; and the boys have to bring their own partners too.  In the movies, the girls will cry if they cannot find a date.  And, the boys will show off their new dates, if they cannot get the dates they have been wanting to go out with.  Really, cannot come alone.  Tickets are sold in pairs; one printed with a B and the other with a G.

Let me think what kind of songs.  Please help me and everyone to think.  San Francisco, "To sir with Love".  I guess a 70s theme would be exciting.  But, then the songs and music must be danceable.  Not all boys and girls can dance.  For fear of not dancing well or I just dont want to show you how good my dancing is.  Prom nights – a night of rock & roll; and also some waltz.  Guess, enough time for all of us to learn.  12 months to practise.

Food and drinks; I guess we can have plenty of fruit punches.  Still in school, so no alcohol.  Cigarettes, hmm; maybe in the bushes.  Teachers and principals are watching.  Food, aiyah, we may not want to dirty our dresses; so minimal.  But, I think a good dinner spread may also be a good idea.  Well, we have not have a venue in mind; but it could be in the school canteen.

Again, please take this dream in good light.  Yes, we may be SilverHairs, but we can all feel young too.  So, start looking for your date now.  I have no promises that this event will happen.  But if we are to go ahead with this dream, it is very likely I will announce the venue, date and ticket price after the coming D&D.

Look out for movies of prom nights.  And, please share your dreams of a prom night.  (Please do not email me or call me on this event).

I just love this; and I hope you do too.

  • Karaoke Session anyone?

I haven’t sung for a long, long time but I do recall the fun and hilarity when I had a great time with friends karaoke-ing. To make it an evening of non-stop laughter, what my friends and me did was to do a ‘live’ translation of dialect lyrics to English songs. Likewise for a Mandarin song, anyone who is bilingual can do the translation to English or vice versa.

Before I create a proper thread, I just want to find out WHO and HOW MANY is interested. I believe that is a max pax per room for places like Party World or K Box.

If I get a good response then I’ll organize this event.

    *Fingers crossed*

What the …. happened to Ben Foo?

    My dear friends,

I have gone MIA for the last 3 months and have not continued with the "investment"  gatherings. I am sorry I did not update earlier.

I am now living in Ho Chi Minh City for the last 2months plus. Yes, I have relocated and have resigned from Phillip Securities, and some fellow SHCians already knew. Sad to say, I will not be able to arrange our "Investment" meetings anymore and participate in all the exciting events that I used to attend, like getting drunk at Ah Nee’s party at MAS.

My old friend has invited me to join him and help expand his biz in Vietnam, and I took the plunge. I now hold a 3-year residency visa in Vietnam, hopefully can find a affordable ‘paradise’ to retire in the longer term.

I am the Singapore director of a 5-year old Korean investment advisory and real eastate company based in HCMC. We provide consultancy to corporate customers to help start their business and quickly secure the appropriate business licenses (not easy and can take forever) in Vietnam.

We also provide real estate agency, investment and management services to help foreign companies and individuals (facing language, cultural and legal issues) to lease or buy land (for building factories, resorts, etc), buildings, offices, retail outlets, apartments (condo) and villas (landed) in Vietnam.

I am still learning anything and everything Vietnamese. It has been quite an experience so far (some of you may know what I mean), and busy settling down (no time for alot of things).

I shall be most happy to catch up with SHCians living in HCMC, or meet anybody coming over for holidays. I shall pick you up in my company car at the airport. I shall be happy to enlighten those who may be keen to invest and retire in Vietnam, I think it is a very attractive idea. Drop me a post and I shall try to reply asap (sorry in advance if few days late). I am not advertising or asking anybody to do this, but if you ask I shall reply.

Meanwhile, I shall keep my dear friends posted here. So now you want to know what the …. he does at night?

    Cheers, Ben Foo
