Handicrafts’ Expert : Any1 care to teach!

Hi Handicraft SiFu-Men,
Care to teach those who are interested in handicrafts – Pls come forward to coach those that are willing to learn.  I remembered during those days at the past monthly gatherings, we have some voluntary members that came forward to teach handicrafts.  During those times, we do not have a venue to cater for this kind of events hence at times, it is very difficult organize such events.

These days, we have a venue (MPH Cafe) available for this purpose almost every Saturdays.  Thus, those that are willing to impart their handicrafts to fellow members, pls contact me at dlgummy@hotmail.com so that I can make arrangement to cater for this.

Though handicraft is never my cup of tea cos got clumsy fingers la but I like to watch demonstration ongoing..

Hope to hear from you soon from here… Cheers… Dolly

More Card Tricks – Thomas Lau & Sifu Lim

Hi All SHC Members,
I am sure that for the past couple of weeks, couple of members have learnt from both Thomas and Sifu Lim a trick or 2 in cards.   For this coming Sat, both of you are again come to the Cafe again to impart their knowledge of card tricks.

As spoken with Thomas, he had promised that there will be no repeated tricks every time he come to cafe from this Sat onwards.  However, for those that need extra training on the tricks that have been taught previously but yet to understand fully, both of them will revise them upon request before the new card trick is being taught, i.e. for the 1st hour, both of them will revise the previous trick as requested.

So those interested to learn more about card tricks, start register now.. Registration limited to 15paxs only due to space constraints.  I would appreciate for those attendees to try to be on time as it would be unfair for those early and 1 of the Sifu have to give personal coaching for late comers – Like that, will only encourage more latecomers from time to time lor.. right :)

Class starts from 11am to 2.00pm.

Those coming this Sat are:

  1. Thomas Lau
  2. Sifu Lim
  3. Henry Yip

Trading club get – together Thur 25 Nov 2010

From the last trading club gathering, it appears interesting to have attendees bring along their notebooks and laptops.  We can share our knowledge on trading platforms.  It does not matter which company you are using to trade forex or stocks.  Perhaps, next year, when we have more people interested, we can split into different groups – forex and equities.

For those who are interested, feel free to join in.  Time:  1400 – 1800 hrs. Place: inside MPH bookstore, Robinson Road.

It would be nice if  you register your interest here.

Food For Thought

I have been reading up on how to avoid heart attack and have found the answer. It is to eat only plant based food. That means not eating anything that moves, including what comes out of them, like milk and eggs.  Doctors have found out that the muck we accumulate in our blood vessels and intestines can be clean up if we eat only plant based food. It will also reduce our excessive body weight, prevent diabetes and avoid cancer.  Your internal organs can actually become ‘younger’.  Mainstream doctors do not like this solution because it will reduce their income from selling you drugs and surgery. More and more retired Doctors are preaching this cure because they have already made their money and can become ‘real ‘ doctors.

But do what I tell you to, don’t do what I do.

This post is to follow up on Kenneth’s idea of sharing  good hawker foods which he posted on Rosalind’s thread which is on the subject of cooking. Please share on this thread of any good hawker stalls you have eaten yourself.

Food is like sex, they taste better if they are forbidden or unhealthy.

Fortune cookies – Do you know what it is?

I am not sure how many of us have seen a fortune cookie.  Guess those who have patronised Chinese restaurants in the West, would know what a fortune cookie is.  Last week, I was glad to join the good company of Hou Chong, Tian Soo and CharlesC.  We ate at an Asian restaurant.  Food was so so; but what attracted me was a bottle of fortune cookies.

Bought one; but was finally given to me free by the owner.  Broke the shell, and inside was a strip with the words "Soon, you will meet more elders …"  Well, I like it.

Do you make fortune cookies? or can you make them? Say, maybe 250 pcs at a time.  I was thinking that this would be great idea for restaurants.   Please let me know, I would like to get in touch with you.

Chinese New Year is coming!

Time of the year to give calendars and diaries

Nowadays, it is very difficult to be given a desktop or wall calender.  Probably, the cost of producing calendars are just too high.  So, companies dont give.  Well, some of you may be lucky or your companies are doing well.  They may give up diaries and calendars.  But, some of you may not want to use diaries; instead you use PDAs and smartphones.  The luckier ones may receive exotic calendarsl, and dont want them too.  Probably too shy to hang them on the wall.

Well, dont throw them away or keep for 2012.  If you have a calendar, wall or desktop, or a pocket diary or desktop diary that you dont one, please mention here.  Bring them to any of the gatherings between now and end of 2010.  I am sure some souls will love it.

So, dont throw away the new diaries or calendars.  Time of the year to share.

For those who love cooking or want to learn how to cook

There are many, many websites in the Internet whereby we can get detailed recipes for dishes we want to experiment with or cook for our family members/friends. Google ‘ recipes for chilli crab’ and you’ll get thousands of links that you can select from. If you do know of a website whereby the recipes offered are tested and given the thumbs up by you please share the link with us. I have one > http://www.mediterrasian.com/index.htm The pictures are really useful and the variety of dishes offered is international. The best part? It’s FREE! Yeahhhh!!!

Another fun time with Thomas Lau on card tricks and origamai

This Saturday, 6th Nov 2010, Thomas Lau has again offered to share with us his hobbies in card tricks and paper origami.  Personally, I was impressed with Thomas’s desire to share with others.  He is very entertaining, and I hope some of us can learn from him; even to pick up a new hobby to entertain our children, grandchildren or fellow SHCians.

SHC is an opportunity for SilverHairs; it provides the platform for SHCians to meet but you have to figure out what you want to do with your SilverHairs years.  Picking up arts and crafts is one of them.  You too can share with many quiet and shy SHCians.

Thank you Thomas.  The venue is at the MPH cafe along 63 Robinson Road, from 11 am to 2pm.  When you come in, introduce yourself, bring your own pen and paper, and an unwanted thick papered magazine to fold origami, may a pack of cards.  So  join in the fun.

Dolly Lim will be at the cafe, do get to know her, or let her get to know you too.  Have fun.
