On a rainy day

On this raining wet day when we a marooned indoors, it is
time to reflect.

I am able to feed myself by watching my investments. But I don’t
read financial statements or pay attention to financial experts. Financial statements
and expert advises are fast becoming more fictional by the day. I do pay
careful attention to political developments in the world. All investment
markets are influenced by world events. If you can read it right, you can make profits.

This post is to tap on the brains and experiences of members
on your reading of current political events. It is not about politics as in
which government is better. It is about political and social events affecting
our investments.

To start of, there is now an important change in the Middle
East. The ripple  of toppling dominant
governments have started in Tunisia and now in Egypt and a smaller extend in
Yemen. Saudi stock market is shaking.

 There are still many dominant
governments in the Middle East. This  revolutionary
change of government if continued. will eventually affect the world supply of
fossil fuel, world economy and your investments.   This
may be the biggest political upheaval this century but I may be wrong..

Let me have your views on the world today.

You have nowhere to go in this rain anyway.

Shanghai, as the base for one full month this year

I cannot be too sure, if this concept will work.  But, sometime ago, I had a chat with Charles Chua, and we were talking about going to China.  We have not agreed on the month, but the concept goes like this.

I shall book an apartment in one of the major cities in China, for one whole month.  Perhaps, a 3 room apartment with cooking facilities, in a gated community.  Likely convenient to supermarkets, train stations or bus stations.  I was thinking of Shanghai or Beijing because of cheaper flight connections.

Participants can block by weeks, we can only announce after we find the apartment or house.  You can even block for a whole month.  Costs will be pro-rated.  Participants can travel anywhere they like.  There is no itinery or schedule or plan.  Participants make their flights to and out the residence.  Buy your own food, and get use to local Chinese way of life in Shanghai or Beijing.  Food can be as cheap as you want or as expensive as you desire.  You can even buy or rent a bicycle as China roads are great for bicycles.  Go see the little lanes, also practise your potonghua, have a hairdo, and drink tea the whole day.

China has long term visas for us, so you can even stay 3 months.  And, if you have a friend who has a house, ready to be rented out, do let us know.

This trip is not ideal for those who are thinking of short stays like 3-7 days.  Not ideal for those who cannot walk.  Not ideal for those who enjoy Singapore toilets.  Not ideal for those who do not enjoy road side stalls.  And, not ideal for those who are sensitive to being lost.

Now, let the dream starts.

Taking SHC to the next level in 2011

SHC has grown significantly over the years; and I have to admit that I am not able to consistently keep the club excited or even maintain it at the current level.  A lot of feedback has been received in this forum over the years; but unfortunately, we have few volunteers to carry out the ideas and suggestions.

On this coming Sunday and Monday, I shall be gathering together a group of SHC for a meeting to consolidate the ideas, and see how we can take SHC to the next level.

One objective is to have lesser participation and direction from myself.  I am prepared for radical ideas; although I am not likely to lift the taboos on politics, race, religion and sex, direct selling and MLM.

Meantime, if you have an opinion, or suggestions or ideas, feel free to drop them here, on this Post.

Inability to access the SHC website the last few days

Hi everybody,

I understand from Yew Kwong and a few members that they were not able to write comments in the last few days.  Apology, as I am not too sure why too.  However, I have asked our hosting company to look into it this morning, and I hope you should be able to access the site as usual.

Interesting to note is we have a number of people who have registered from Russia, AOL and UK sites.  We had knowingly permitted this so that members can register on their own.  If we suspect the registration is not genuine, Yew Kwong would normally give them a "No role" status.  We still keep them on the system, to avoid them using the same email address.

Sometimes, they sneaked into our system, and write Posts or comments which are usually advertising related.  This is where we have to be alert, and delete them before you read them.  Got to say we have been efficient, approx 99% of the time.

Even if someone registers as a member on this website, we will always send them a membership application form.  He/she must fill up the form.  IF approved, then that person becomes a SHC member.  He/she will also receive a welcome message from me.  Anyone who does not receive a welcome message is NOT a member.

Names which appear on our forum, especially for event registratioin, are checked continuously throughout the day.  If the person is not a member, it will be flagged to our attention; and usually we ask the person to contact admin@silverhairsclub.com.  The system has so far been pretty fool-proofed, and maybe unique in its own way.  That’s why we have a simple registration system.

Have fun guys and gals.

Desktopdating – Beware of hackers!

Dear friend,

I just received an email supposedly from Thomas Loh and Richard Wong. Thomas denied it is from him.

They request to know my whether you are male or female, the next request is for your password. Dun, dun ever disclose, danger ahead! I was once caught because I was gullible. They use Thomas and Richard email to contact me, be careful they want your password and the next thing you know all your friend in your email list will receive an email.

It said in the email ‘I was robbed in London, all my monies and credit cards are gone. Can you do me a favour, wire me a certain amount of money and I will return you when I am back, appreciate a lot!’

I was a sucker once, dun want to be caught again, you too!

Soon, the Rabbit year will arrive – Happy Lunar New Year

The Rabbit year promises lots of excitement and vibrance to all SilverHairs.  Whatever our age, I am sure we can all look forward to that something special.  Good health, reasonable wealth, and plenty of happiness.

This year, how about sharing with everybody what is your animal?  If you are an ox, we might try to pair you up with a chicken.  And, if you are a horse, we will try a goat.  If the pairing does not work, I am sure someone around us will be able to tell us so.  We can also know you a little bit better.  Are  you a rabbit?  How many of you are rabbits?

Share with us your predictions, what will the rabbit year be like?

Also, share your best wishes too.  Kong Xi Fa Chai.

Start 2011 with a burst of laughter

Start the new year with a hearty laugh – hahahahahahah

Folks – Have a wonderful new year filled with laughter.

During the one day JB day trip, several members who remembered that I was the EC for a laughter exercise, asked me – Is the laughter exercise held every Tuesday at Hort Park, still on-going?  YES – it is, but the venue has recently changed. I’m putting up this post for those who are interested:

Venue: Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Date and time: Every Tuesdays, 6.30pm to 7.00pm

Laughter exercise spot: A stone’s throw from the MAIN ENTRANCE GATE.

Walk to the Green Pavilion. There is a patch of nicely lawned grass. This is it.

FAQs:

What to wear: Wear light, loose-fitting clothes, and flatties.

Suitable for whom: young or old, men or women, short or tall, fat or thin. Especially suitable for people who would like to de-stress.

How to enjoy your experience: Plan to arrive at 5.30pm (optional), take a stroll to enjoy the garden. At 6.20pm, stroll toward the Green Pavilion. Ms Zaibun (the laughter exercise facilitator) starts promptly at 6.30pm. The laughter exercise ends at 7pm. You may wander off to stroll some more around the garden. Some friends take the opportunity to catch dinner together. Some who came alone, and appeared to be burdened with troubled thoughts, will smile and wave good-bye quietly. Free and easy.  Really. Do as you please. No one will cajole you, preach to you about the benefits of laughter.

You will discover the benefits yourself. Give yourself a chance to find that out.

This laughter session is really “free and easy”. Literally.  Free – Zaibun does this for free. Easy – The exercise is easy to follow; no registration required.

A little note here: Zaibun is a trained laughter facilitator. Big companies and organization pay big bucks to hire laughter facilitators to conduct “laughing sessions” for their employees. Their purpose is to help their employees to de-stress and thereby be happier and more productive.

For maximum benefit: remember to laugh out loud. Exhale completely, inhale fresh air… bringing oxygen to every cells…

Many participants have noticed that their well-being have improved markedly. For more information, do read the “older posts” on laughter exercise. Those posts were made by Vivian Lai, Sylvia Ang, and Jacqueline Han. Or, google for “laughter yoga” “laughter exercises”.

Should you decide to check this out, do indicate your interest here. And just in case you cannot find us, you may like to have my mobile number. Email jacqhan@gmail.com. Don’t be shy shy.

8 January 2011 Monthly Walk – Marina Bay Area

Date: 8 January 2011 (Saturday evening)
Meeting Place: Raffles Place MRT Control Room
Start Time: 6.30pm
Duration: about 1-2 hours
There are buses along Raffles Quay/Clifford Pier/Robinson Road
EOs for this walk: Serene Low and team members

This would be the first night walk organised to start off the New Year and digest in the beauty of Marina Bay area with the city skyline fronting Raffles Place and Marina Boulevard.
The walk will start promptly at 6.30 pm from Raffles Place MRT control room, walking through Marina Boulevard towards Marina Bay City Gallery.  From here onwards, you can take many breath-taking photo shoots of the city skyline and bay area.  We will continue the walk passing through Marina Bay Sands, crossing the Helix Bridge, towards Esplanade Waterfront, Esplanade Bridge and ending at Merlion Park.  From here, we may disperse here to have our late dinner or early supper along One Fullerton, Boat Quay or sumptuous food choices at Telok Ayer Lau Pa Sar.
Bring a water bottle, an umbrella, windbreaker or shawl in case it rains – it is still intriguing to walk in the rain and feel the raindrops on our cheeks.
We will do a roll call at the beginning of the walk and if you foresee you may disband from the group and take a longer time to feel the cool air and capture in the beauty of the night, do let me or any of the team members know beforehand so that the rest may proceed as scheduled.  The walk will take an hour or more depending on our speed.
Hope to see all of you.
Other Walk Team members: Joyce Tan, Andrew Thio, Charles Wee, Conrad Tang, Veronica Wong, Jeffrey Lim, Mary Tan, Christina Chan.

My Thought for the New Year

Today is 1/1/11. 10 days later it will be 11/1/11. 10 months
later it will be 1/11/11 and 10 days after that it will be 11/11/11.

The 1s’ looks like someone up there is wagging his finger at
us. We pollute the earth, fight each other, the wealthy live off the sufferings
of the poor, countries with more  weapons
are feared, there are more holy men and promises of wealth and heaven. Greed
seems to be the creed.

But if we stop to follow this wave we will be left behind
and be servant to the rich.

What to do eh?
