Happy New Year to all fellow members of SHC.

Since I won the crown for Elite Mrs Singapore 2011, I have been actively involved in some of the activities with the organiser of the pageant events.  As a result, EZ4U Music & Dance and Glamour Danzfit have been invited to be one of the official sponsors of this year’s event.

Very briefly, the pageant for Mrs Singapore & Elite Mrs Singapore Quest 2012 consists of :

*  talent round

*  fashionwear round

*  bridal gown round

*  evening wear round

*  lingerie round (contestants can opt out if they do not wish to participate in this segment)

The sequence starts from Feb 2012 to Aug/Sep 2012, ie right upto the finals.  This gives more time in between for the contestants to prepare.

There are sponsored fashionwear, bridal gown, evening wear, accessories, hair styling, makeup, talent training.  The first photoshoot starts in February 2012 and comes with sponsored makeup and hairstyling.

We are now in a recruitment process to find nominees for the 2012 quest.  On behalf of EZ4U Music & Dance and Glamour Danzfit, I am extending an invitation to the ladies in SHC to participate. 

A CHANCE TO FEEL EMPOWERED AS A WOMAN.

The challenge in Mrs Singapore is not the same as that of Miss Singapore.  In Mrs Singapore,  looking as beautiful as Venus or standing at a model’s height are not the most important criteria.  Contestants are judged on their level of confidence, personality, ability to interact, the way a lady carries herself, just to name a few……

There will be a briefing by the organiser on Sunday (5th Feb 2012) at 3 pm.  At this briefing, you will be informed of all the details and you can ask as many questions as you may have in your mind.  The purpose is to let participants know exactly what they are in for before signing up for the challenge.

Taking part in the pageant last year was a very good experience for me.  I have never done this before in my life.  It is not because of the fact that I won but the involvement and the experience in the whole process was really something I treasure in my heart and in my mind. 

Do not underestimate yourself.  You do not know your full potentials until you give yourself a chance to release all the hidden qualities in you.

Exploring JB as a place to spend for retirement and healthcare

Hi guys and gals,

Once in a while, some members have expressed interest in looking at JB properties.  Their idea is to rent the properties for retirement or to buy, if the economics make sense.  Unfortunately, some of the organisers with good intentions, withdraw the trip plans, due to lack of support for their suggestions.

There is true the media has reported crimes in JB, theft in non-gated communities in JB, etc etc.

I like to take a different approach.  I think that the situation of many retirees and soon-to-be retirees warrant a relook at JB as a destination for retirement living.  Many Singaporean retirees have nice big or medium big HDB flats, which are probably fully paid.  However, many retirees, not all, see that they are not enjoying the lifestyle that they want.  Got asset, but little cash.  Why not rent the place out, and move to another cheaper place with more space and maybe conditions worth reviewing.

There, then is the possibility of looking for a nursing home, not for now, but maybe the future for ourselves.  Or may be for our old parents, relatives and friends.

I hope we can support those members who want to give JB a look at retirement and nursing opportunities.  Find out what it costs, how safe they would feel confortable with at different places, the good food, the ugly side, the bigger houses, etc etc.  The media has reported the negatives; and some of us have experienced negatives.  But, let’s not let these negatives prevent us from going to have a look.  There are other Singaporeans who have successfully stayed in JB, and come back once a month, to see their friends or for medical.  So, again, Let’s gives others a chance.

As such, I have requested Daniel Kang, who lives in JB most of the time, to coordinate this activity, from JB.  It is likely we will adopt the following approaches.

  • Daniel will assist to organise a van, likely a 9 seater from morning to late afternoon.
  • He will make arrangements to view some properties, maybe the Iskandar project and a nursing home.
  • He will arrange to meet some condo and house representatives, so that those who attend can get an idea of the possibility in JB.
  • The nursing home for Singaporean is also of interest, and I have asked him to work on this.
  • Towards the end of the day, we can land at some makan places, have a good meal before going back to Singapore.
  • All transport to JB and return will be organised by the individual.  Daniel’s task will be to pick up in JB and return you to JB.

I think that this activity would not suit everybody; but it is for those who wants to explore the possibility of another option.  Everybody has different situations, so, give every body a chance.  Dont let our experiences with negatives discourage other members from seeing the other side of the river.

Daniel will get back to us soon.  I thought it would be nice to inform you of this plan.  More later.  And, of course, if you live in JB and like to help us with seeing JB from the same angle, send me an email.  If you have interest to participate, please put your name down to register, and once the details are available, you can decide if you can make the date.

A regular SHC meeting point in the West, for retirees

I have been exploring the possibility of having other SHC regular gatherings outside the central area in Singapore.  Last week, I spoke with Vincent Khoo, who lives in Jurong East.  In general, since he is retired, and would also like to gather and coordinate SHC members together on a regular basis.

In general, I have some agreement and understanding on having a monthly gathering there at Jurong East, for those members who live in the West.  Key points are:

  • Place – Jurong East
  • Venue likely a food court.  This is being explored by Vincent. Food court Kopitiam, 2nd floor, IMM
  • Time – 10 am – 12nn or 2pm to 4pm, a weekday
  • Frequency – likely once a month
  • Date:  Fri 10 Feb 2012
  • Residents – those who are retired and live in the best.
  • Transport – MRT, Jurong East.
  • Food – As you would buy from the food court.
  • fees – there are no charges.
  • Topic – Vincent will lead.  But, participants can suggest topics.

Soon, I will announce the start of these gatherings.  Note:  The usual monthly gatherings for all members will still continue; although this one will be in the West for retired SHCians.

For your info, thoughts and comments.  If anyone has suggestions, and would like to lead in the East and North, please share your thoughts here.  This is to be a regular happening.  We will take it from here.

Just Wondering

 

Yes Terence. I was writing this post and some visitors pop-in so I quickly erase whatever I was writing and try to look distinguish. They are gone now, so here it is again.

Last week we read news of these  2 Chiefs of our government security agencies being investigated for practicing IT with one married women and paying for their enjoyment by favouring her with job contracts. Than today, an MP has to go on enforced leave because of his liason  also with a married women. I was thinking if they are sharing this same women.

 I also wonder :

1.  If married women are the vogue this season.

2.  Are they all looking to have Dragon babies?

3.  Are good experienced women so scares that they have to share?

4.  Should  they be encouraged, so as  to preserve an intelligent gene pool?

5.   Is these just a tip of an iceberg?

6.  When can we get to see this Wonder woman and how others can learn from her skills.

 

 

Chitchat Session on 17.02.2012 (Friday)

Besides Photography field trips, which is organized once in every 3-4 months, we are considering to have a fortnightly gathering in any convenient venue in food courts like Kopitiam for 2-3 hours of chitchat.

The objective is to provide an opportunity for any SHC member just to come out for a cup of coffee, chitchat and to expand our social network. For those interested, it’s a great way to get involved & meet others with similar interests. We can share and discuss common topics (including IT) during the gathering. We should avoid the peak hours of these food court outlets and to conduct it on a weekday.

We plan to have a small gathering of size not more than 12 SHC members including the EO on a first come first serve basis.

Walking is one of the simplest forms and also the most effective form of exercise. Good for sedentary

workers!  

Regular walking, like most aerobic activities, is good because cardio-vascular exercise strengthens the

heart and lungs, increasing overall fitness.

Walking is low impact.   It does not have the same potential for injury as jogging or other strenuous forms

of activities, yet offers all the benefits.

Founder had asked me to mention the benefits of walking.  So here goes…..

Some BENEFITS mentioned by doctors are:

1)  good for bones and improves the body’s cardiovascular system. It also helps boost circulation.
2)  helps to drain the lower legs of excess fluid and can help prevent varicose veins through the pumping
      action of the calf muscles.
3)  people tend to be able to walk at a consistent speed than run, it is a more beneficial form of
      tissue-cleansing.
4)  also better for the spine than running, as it puts less stress on the discs.   Human beings were
      designed for constant movement, not sitting in cars or in front of computers, which causes negative
      pressures on our spinal cord.
5)  Regular walking is excellent for spinal discs, which receive minerals and vitamins through the
      pumping action it causes.

Looking for ideas on how to train those with little internet knowledge

Many members who can access SilverHairsClub.com have at least the basic knowledge on how to use the internet, for emailing and searching for the information they want.  Of course, there are always alot to learn, and some members have more than working knowlede of the internet.  Others find that the internet is frightening to them, and do not use the internet for the daily use.  Many do not use the net, because their children do not allow them to use the home computer, or they do not have one PC to use.

The area that may be of concern is the lack of computer knowledge and use of the internet.  Many just are too frighten to use the internet. Some may be worried about messing up the data inside the computer, if they press the wrong button.  For others, getting the mouse to move is mind boggling.

Today, without the internet, some of us can be lost.  We either queue up at the bank counter, or we do our transaction online.  We either buy newspapers or we read the news on the IPAD or a smartphone.  We may be still sending Christmas cards, while for many, they no long send cards nor receive cards.  What’s happening?

I think that internet training may be a good project to undertake.  We had courses before, but they are no longer pursued.  For some, we prefer senior trainers and not some 25 year old telling us what to do.  We dont want to attend classes with other 25 years old, less we may appear odd.  Yes, many members are good enough with the internet.

As this is the new year, I am thinking we can revisit the issue of internet training and PC training.  We have tried, but we were not able to continue.  Do you think this is a cost issue?  Or is the fact that we cannot have courses, due to lack of venues or lack of computers?  Or, we have no trainers, or enough members willing to share?  Or are the rates charged too high, even if they are the same rate charged by the venue operators?  Or should trainers be paid?

This is the beginning of the year.  I hope you can share your thoughts on how we can get internet training going on, on a continuous basis.  Have you a suggestion or idea?  Dont worry about feasibility.  An idea or suggestion is still an idea.  Share it with us.  We might pick up these ideas for implementation.  Please respect other members ideas, whether you think workable or not.  Even if running internet courses or IT training is your line, say something so we can hear you too.

How to  provide internet knowledge to those who would like to know more about the internet and PC? Including those with no knowledge at all.

Myself  and my wife, Irene, would like to join as corporate member as stated in the SHC Forum.

I am currently running EZ4U Music and Dance
whereby I conduct training for singing and dancing.  Irene also conduct training  for stage
showmanship and personal grooming/presentation.  Another related 
organisation, Glamour Danzfit run by
Irene, specializes in retail and wholesale of dance apparels, shoes 
and accessories. Both organisations run events
on a regular basis such as anniversaries, theme parties, 
festive celebrations, corporate functions,
community club events, just to name a few……………

We also undertake projects with organisations
such as National Park, SCCCI for special appearances and ongoing trainings.

I went to JB to open a bank account yesterday. I have to drive around the whole complex to find the entrance to the carpark. The carpark was packed and I have to wind my way down 3 floors before finding a space. All the while I curse the bad design and bad maintainence of the building.

Then I got to the shopping center and have to ask 3 people for direction before  I found the bank. I thought the people I met were quite stupid and cannot give proper directions.

I approached the bank reception and was told to get a queue ticket. On the ticket dispensor was this security guard who just gave me a ticket already printed by him. I told myself ‘Mana ada system’. I cannot see any electronic display board to tell me when is my turn and where to go. What a useless bank. I ask a tudong clad lady behind the first dask and she pointed to where I should wait. In front of me with the bank officer was this about 80 year old Chinese Singaporean man. He had his pink I/C on the desk. It looks like this elderly man have difficult understand and deciding what he want but the Malay lady officer had her graceful smile all the time and patiently repeat her instructions. It went on for about 20 minutes. I was impatient.

Just then a very sweet young Malay girl with her colourful tudong  stood up from next to me and invite me with her sweetest smile to have her seat. I did not notice her before.

It then dawn on me, what had become of me. I have become a grumpy old man, full of myself and with a mistaken superior attitude. I was blind to the patient, gracious people I was with but cannot see them. I recall everyone I ask for direction and met, including the security guard, had a friendly smile for me while I harbour disdain for them.

I have learnt a lesson form the little Malay girl with her bright colour Tudong. 

 

 

Silverhairs Club Charity Lunch – February 18, 2012 (Sat)

It’s time we do our part for charity. With Terence’s encouragement, we have fixed this date for the event. Trying to find a charity home to help is no mean task as there are too many to look at. I have identified the Queenstown Community Club as they have a special department looking out to the underprivileged in the vicinity.

It’s always more blessed to give so let us take this opportunity to play a small part. The Queenstown area comprises the lower income group from Tanglin Halt to Mei Ling St to Stirling Rd. Most are rented flats. Those who live here are the older folks. Our target are those 60 years old and above.

Venue: Queenstown Community Club, Commonwealth Avenue (Air-conditioned hall, can accomodate up to 300pax and has a big stage)

Time: 11.00am-2.00pm

Cost: $5.00 per pax (Each member who signs up must sponsor one or more elderly residents)

Menu: Food catered by Sin Kee Famous chicken rice includes white and roasted chicken, an egg dish, a toufu dish and a vegetable dish. We need a sponsor for soft drinks.

A medical point will be set up from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm for those coming to check their glucose level, foot scan and blood pressure.

Programme : 11.00am – 12.30pm Karaoke Singing (Judy assisted by Jeffrey)

                     12.30pm-1.30pm     Stage singing by our singers led by Jeffrey and Irene and opera singing by  the CC Opera Troupe.

We need ushers and helpers to make the event a success!

BANLAK & POTLUCK 3 FEB 2012

Dear SHC Members & Friends,

In keeping up with the tradition, me and my co-EOs are going to organise a ‘GAME DAY" during Chinese New Year:

DATE: 3 Feb 2012 (Friday)

TIME: 2PM onward (till the next morning for those who want to stay)

PLACE  Home Team chalet, Pasir Ris Park, unit A1

Nearest MRT: Pasir Ris (you may take bus 403 from Pasir Ris bus interchange and alight at the stop after the round about. walk a bit to chalet)

Although the main thing is playing ‘banlak’ (card game) but this gathering is meant for everybody (including our Malay/Indian friends) to have fun and enjoy the spirit/atmosphere of CNY. 

You may just come in for a chat,  take a leisure stroll at the beach or sip tea, drink beer at the balcony…

a. whether you prefer potluck or BBQ (If potluck, what’ll you bring)

ONLINE FLEA MART – JANUARY 2012

  • Beginning from this month, the online flea mart will accept advertisements of trips or tours personally conducted/led/organised by ACTIVE SHC members. Please promote your trips/tours within 10 lines and include your e-mail addresses for enquiries.
  • The rules for advertising on this site remain basically the same:
  1. Two advertisements per registered member per month.
  2. 5 line limit per advertisement. For trip/tour advertisements, the limit is 10 lines per ad.
  3. "For sale" , "Looking for" , "giveaway" advertisements and the status of the advertised items eg. "sold" or "withdrawn" are welcome.
  4. Not permitted: (i)advertisements of corporate goods/items, (ii) telephone numbers of advertisers, (iii) queries and comments on advertised items.
  5. Advertisers must include their e-mail addresses for contact.

A charity idea and potluck. Will this work?

Sometime, in 2012, we should do something simple and yet feasible for sme charities in Singapore.  In the past, some members have embarked on visits to homes and providing some food and entertainment for the day.  In some cases, some monies were collected and given to the selected charity.

I had the privilege to spend some time discussing with some SilverHairs other options or ways of giving monies to charities.  This good deed may be debatable to some people, for various reasons.

Many members are keen to support charities, but this act has to be sincere, genuine and support a good cause.  i hope I am not starting a debate on the why’s of giving to charities.

The discussion caught my attention, and I was hoping to find some way of giving to charities.  This is a big potluck event where participants contribute a potluck item to the event.  Those wshing to try and buy an item pay, say 2 dollars, for one item. Let’s say we open this event to the public.

All proceeds, we donate to charities.  And, if the idea is good, we do this event once ayear.  We may even combine this event with another event.

Let’s take some time to discuss.  What do you think?  Please do not trash any ideas or suggestions.
