How was your first time?

They say TEENAGE is the time when we are curious about our body and there are many first experences. We were curious, inquisitive and experimental. The romantics  say we must treasure our first experience. Practical people like me just try to get more experience and be good at it.  At that age, we often talk about it, speculate about it and mostly the boys boast about it.

Of course not everyone is dirty like me. I am aware that there are  ‘respectable ladies ‘ here in this forum who do not even want to read about IT. I think they are still waiting to savour it.

I believe this saying is wrong. When we are past 45 years old you would find that there are more  first time experiences that will happen to your bodies then you had when you were  a teenager. And we should talk and learn more about them, less we are lead astray.  For example, the first time your hairs starts to turn silver, the first time your hair disappears, the first time we waited till the bus stops completely before we ambark, the first time you walk up the overhead bridge instead of running across the road, the first time you notice you cannot run . Than comes your first heart attack, your first stroke, your first catarac, the first time you make sure to stand very close to the urinal or your feet will get wet.

I am therefore intrigued that there are so few people here willing to share their first experences here.  Are they just waiting for them to happen again than get better at it the next time. Or maybe they want to savour it because it will be their first time.

I hope, like Jacqualine, Kenneth and others you will be more willing to come forward to share your experiences. There is nothing to be shy about your first time experiences. We are not a teenager anymore and we should learn as much as possible and early. Then perhaps we will not turn frigid  when the next  ‘First Experience’ comes.

For those who like to see Yangon, enjoy the water festival 12 – 16 April 2012

Many of us have not visited Yangon, let alone see the rest of Myanmar.  I have visited Yangon at least 10 times, the last was with Ivan Lim last year.  Myanmar has been close to the world for many years; and it’s only in the last 10 months that there are signs of the country opening up.  Today, Myanmar has many visitors, all wanting to have a look at this unexplored country.

I have just returned from Yangon, and I am planning to go back this time to celebrate the water festival, which will fall on 12 – 16 April 2012.  Actually, it is a weeklong holiday, and I am hoping to have a few good water splashes.  This period is expected to be very hot.  The local currency is the Kyatt.  However, most hotels and tourist areas transact in USD.  Current exchange rate is about 1 USD = 850 kyatt.   1 SGD = 650 kyatt.

5 star hotels are expensive and limited.  However, 3 and 4 star hotels can be available for around USD 40. Some of you may have gone to Myanmar for meditation; Others for the temples; while others for the shopping. There are good Singapore and Malaysian food; these are easily available as many Singaporeans venture there for business and excitement of the unventured.

The trip is not confirmed; subject to hotel availability.  However, the likelihood of me going is high.  If you like to visit Yangon, I like to invite you to join me and a few other Singaporeans.  Tourism wise, it does not have many of the tourist places we see in other countries.  You will also get a chance to meet William Chew, one of SHC co-founders who has been there for the last 20+ years.  Enjoy the local food and get a taste of local shopping, morning markets, catch a glimpse of the lady, the lakes and local culture.

A tourist visa is needed, SGD 35, taking two days to apply.  Flights are not cheap, you can fly direct or you can fly via bkk.  Time wise, it is 1.5 hours behind Singapore.  There are plenty of cockcroaches, and there is no hot water.  If you like to join, simply indicate here.  You can withdraw at a later date.

And, for those who have been to Myanmar, in particular Yangon, feel free to share your experience and knowledge of this golden country.

Cataract Surgery – please help

Hi Folks

The good doctor said that everybody "develops cataract", eventually, as they aged. Some sooner, some later.

I have early stage cataract in my right eye. I ought to be
having surgery. I have been “researching” on the internet, as well as attended “cataract
seminar” to gather information.

I have heard the eye doctors’ opinions. BUT I PREFER to hear
from the cataract ops patients. Can you help?

If you have had cataract surgery recently, I’d like to hear
from you.

Particularly, I am interested to know –

What type of intra ocular lens did you opt for: monofocal,  multifocal, “Toric multifocal”?

Do you have any issues with your choice of lens? If yes,
what are your issues?

I was informed that the post surgery "down time" was minimal. But, I’d like to hear from you – How long was the recovery process? That is – how many hours/days does it take before you can see clearly?

If you are happy with your doctor’s services, please give me
his/her name and contact detail (via email to jacqhan@gmail.com.)

If you are shy to discuss your cataract surgery on an open
forum, please also email me at jacqhan@gmail.com

I’d really appreciate your input. I look forward to hear
from you.

With kind regards,

Jacqueline

Investing our nest egg

I give up!!!

I just lost the comments I made for this post… really silly and
frustrating.

I wanted to look for a recent comment on a past investment-related post…
and I just couldn’t find it despite trolling through pages of comments and
months of post topics.

This lady wanted to know if it is a good time to buy bank stocks now; I guess
she means Singapore bank stocks. I think she deserves a response but I cannot
give more than a basic answer:

I think you can buy Singapore bank stocks but use only up to 5 percent of
your investment capital. Can Singapore banks fail? If they do, you’d only have
lost only 5 percent of your investment total.

I want to urge other SHC members who are more savvy about the market and
investing to give their comments and suggestions. The present economic and world
situation is getting very critical: EU and US financial systems are breaking
down, Mid-east tensions with Iran, world economic slowdown or even depression,
rising inflation and costs: How should we view these and what should we do?

Can we have some views from our SHC gurus?

Q & A ?

Man comes home , finds his wife with his friend in bed. He shoots his friend and kills him. Wife says "If you behave like this, you will lose ALLyour friends"

A small Boy wrote to Santa Claus," send me a brother".
Santa wrote back," SEND ME YOUR MOTHER"

What is the definition of Mistress?
Someone between the Mister and Mattress.

Husband asks , "Do u know the meaning of WIFE??
Without Information Fighting Everytime.
Wife replies," No, It means..With Idiot For Ever!!!"

What’s the difference between stress, tension and panic?
Stress is when wife is pregnant,
Tension is when girlfriend is pregnant,
and Panic is when both are pregnant.

Teacher: Do you know the importance of a period?
Kid: Yeah, once my sister said she has missed one,my mom fainted, dad got a heart attack & our driver ran away.

A women asks man who is traveling with six children,
"Are all these kids yours??"
The man replies, " No, I work in a condom factory and these are customer complaints".

A young boy asks his Dad, "What is the difference between confident and confidential.
Dad says, "You are my son, I’m confident about that.
Your friend over there, is also my son, that’s confidential!"

Mahjong kakis and groups. Join a group or another group.

Recently, when I attended the monthly gathering for the West Enders, I found out that mahjong was a much talk about topic.  Once in a while, I also get to hear of individuals trying to find kakis; but have difficulties finding kakis near their home.  And, sometimes, when I attend functions, I see there are so many mahjong players.  I cannot play as I am afraid to lose money.

To help you find other kakis near your home, you may indicate you are a mahong kakis and the name of the road you stay, or just say North, South, East or West; and I shall list out by regions.  This is like a who’s who in mahjong.  I shall then ask the most active player to be the EO.  You dont have to organise, you just have to coordinate, North, South, East or West.

Geraldine Ting starts her new role as Club Manager wef 1 Mar 2012

Hi fellow members,guys and gals,
SilverHairsClub SHC has been around the last 6 years. We have an informal infrastructure, with activities and discussions organised by members putting in their heart and soul, for the benefit of the entire club members.  Thanks to the many Event Organisers EOs who have drawn SilverHairs together.  Our key objective to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends has worked; and we will continue to work towards fulfilling this objective.  A number of EOs have remained active, month after month and year after year.  We should also thank all the Event Coordinators ECs, who have shared with us their joy, hobbies and interests, by inviting us to their events, while taking care of SHC members as a group.

We do not have many supporting roles.  Key ones include our Picture manager and our Online Fleamart coordinator. And, not forgetting the Club manager.

Whenever I am in Singapore, I eagerly attend little gatherings here and there to look for a Club Manager.  Well, this time, I believe I have been successful. The term starts 1 March 2012 and ends 31 Dec 2012.  Some of you may know her; she is Geraldine Ting; her main residence is in Hong Kong.  She joined SHC in March 2009.

Although she lives overseas, she is a vibrant lady in the club. Someone who speaks her mind; but the best thing about Geraldine is she is full of nonsense.  She is creative and has good PR.  But, wait until she speaks her mind.  That’s all I know about this lady.

What I hope with Geraldine coming onboard is to see more excitement and vibrance in SHC.  We may be into our SilverHairs years; but we are also entitled to put a new life ahead of us.  And, by excitement and vibrance, I mean maximising creativity and imagination.

Welcome on board as the new Club Manager of the SilverHairsClub.  Let’s all welcome Geraldine.

Valentine day is just around the corner. Time to remember our loved ones.

Everyone of us knows Valentine Day.  We think of love and we remember our loved ones.  It’s a good time for children to remember what their parents have done for them; and to thank them for taking care of us all these years.  We love our parents; never mind where they are.

While love is treasured anytime and everytime, Valentine Day is one occasion we stop what we are doing and spend some time with our spouse.  For some of you, Valentine Day may mean a stalk of rose or a nice romantic dinner.  Maybe, it could be some time at the East Coast Park, standing on the breakwaters, and screaming out loud "Ja, I love you".  Still, that little bit of time together while we have the time.

There is fun among friends too.  Our close friends, gather together for some beers, in some noisy corners of Singapore.  A nice way to dance the night away till 3am the next morning.  Get drunk, and instead of going home, you spend the night on the foot path.  Why not?

For those who have met someone new in their life, why not, send a few stalks of lemon grass, cut nicely into a flower.  There are many more years ahead for all of us.

So, be Valentine Day be spent with our children, friends or loved ones, it’s a nice time to be romantic.

And, if you are not shy, you can post your wishes here.  Join together for dinner.  Or have someone send the roses for you.  Have fun.

Donating Blood – giving of life

Good morning

Im a regular Blood Donor and have donated 61 times…and am thinking of donating tomorrow 8th Feb (Wednesday) morning at 10am at SGH – just opposite Outram MRT.. Sorry for the late notice cos I’m travelling on Thursday so decided to do it bf the trip.

Anyone keen to join me? we can go as a group, chit chat… and have tea together..even 1 more person is good enuf lah..

  3. Theme? – Pls give us some idea on this

Any info given to us would definitely be a great help to us for planning… so we would like to hear from you ….

Cheers… Dolly

A Resort-cum-Club Retirement Home

 Hi Silverhairs,

On security-guard duty since Sept 1st last year at the Singapore Post Building which is next to the Paya Lebar MRT Station, I have come to know two operations-staff whom, together with one of their cousins and plus one of their good friend who has an Indonesian wife(all are Malay-Muslims), in late 2010 bought two properties (each cost less than Three hundred and fifty million rupiahs, 1million rph = $14,300plus) at the Costarina Complex which faces the inlet where daily will pass by the ferry from Harbourfront.  From mid-last year, a ferris-wheel(probably less than half smaller than our Marina Flyer) and a small jetty with a few parked recreational boats were readied for residents.

These two operations-staff sold their 3-rm flat to HDB for a 30yr-lease stay whilst the cousin downgraded from 4rm to 3rm and the close friend sold outright his 3rm flat.  The close friend is a permanent stayer while the other three make regular bi-monthly two/three day visits and since last year June holidays, six of their Muslim family friends have rented rooms up to one-week stay(was not told and did not enquire the rental rates).

Perhaps a "Core-group of Absolutely-interested" Silverhairs can copy the above, a Silverhairs’ Resort Home located in JBahru(the Bukit Chagar site next to the Customs Complex is ideal as its higher elevation provide views of the Johor Straits, less than one hundred metres away, and it is also ten mins away to the newly renovated Evon Centre, but alas the buildings are quite dilapidated), the Danga Bay area, or the new Kulaijaya township which is 90mins away north from JBaru.  Kukup, Batu Pahat and Mersing can also be considered, but the latter two towns entail about three hours driving time.

This concept has to be brainstormed by the Core-group of Absolutely-Interested Silverhairs and my take at least ten members are required to anchor this project and assuming one member foots out one hundred thousand ringgit, the capital base is One mil ringgit sufficiently enough to purchase two properties.

 Regards

  Abel Tan

Are you 100% retired? or have given up a full or part-time time job?

I believe we have many still-working SilverHairs in our membership.  By full-time, I mean working 9-5 or where the hours worked are long.I believe we have many still-working SilverHairs in our membership.  By full-time, I mean working 9-5 or where the hours worked are long.

By "Still-Working", or partially retired, I am referring to part-time work eg teaching, consultancy, online trading or when the hours worked are a few hours a week.  I also mean "paid work".

By retired, I mean "Not working" at all.  May be looking after grand children, playing mahjong daily,  going holidays, or catching up with friends regularly.

As a show of hands, can you raise your hands, so we know, you are retired, and what do you do in the course of the week? We may be able to learn from you how to go about our later part of our lives.

I hope that SilverHairsClub can also provide more opportunities for 100% retired members to gather together.

Look forward to know the real retirees.

Y2012 1st Cycling Activity – 18 Feb 2012

Hi Cycling Friends

We are going to commence our first cycling activity on Feb 18 for a start for Y2012.  This time, we are going to cycle from ECP to Marina Barrage.   Marina Barrage is considered Singapore’s latest downtown icon, built across the mouth of the Marina Channel. The Marina Barrage is the first reservoir in the heart of the city, 15th in Singapore.  I understand the scenery is also very fantastic..    emoticon

This activity will be lead by Douglas – a very experienced, careful and caring cyclist.  So, come along and join the fun.

  • As usual, we meet @ 4pm : ECP Marina Cove MacDonald (inside)
  • Proceed to bicycle rental kiosk and start cycling at 4.30pm as advised by Douglas.

But seriously …. are you serious?

Recent comments/postings have prompted me to put up this
post.

Regarding retirement in other (cheaper) countries:

Like many Silverhaired members, I was attracted by the
wonderful prospect of “doubling my retirement funds”. Imagine this – Take my Singapore
dollars, change them into ringgit or Thai Baht or Rupiahs, tah-dah, I have
twice/thrice the amount of money – to spend in these countries. I can buy a cheap(er)
property, employ a cheap(er) maid, eat cheap(er) food…. You get the idea –
living cost is a lot cheaper in these other countries.

What’s the catch?

WHAT’S THE CATCH????

Our neighbouring countries are “politically and economically
less stable”.

Yes – go ahead and have a good laugh. I have modified this
statement to be “politically correct”.

Yep – I don’t want the gahment OR other countries’ gahment
to hantum me.

But seriously – back to point one –

Several months ago, I tried to organize a day trip to recce
JB for retirement living.  The response
was quite dismal. Only four people put up their hands. The trip was
cancelled. These are the mistakes I have made –

MISTAKE NO. 1

I was misled by the NATO people.

People kept talking about “retiring in another (cheaper)
country”. Do they really want to do something about it? I guessed not. When the
opportunity arose for these people to check it out, only five people (including
me) were seriously interested.

MISTAKE NO. 2

I tried to draw a lively discussion on the (THAT) forum, by
inviting people to share their experiences on line. People were shy. If they
share their bad experiences, they feel embarrassed. If they share their good
experiences, they fear that they will draw unnecessary attention upon
themselves.

BUT – they did write to me privately – and I thank them –
thank you for sharing.

These pointers are gleaned from their personal feedback to
me (not in any particular order) –

The immigration ppl will play tricks on you; make you “do
naked squats”, will not stamp your passports…

Don’t show off your Rolex watches; don’t drive your
Singapore registered cars; don’t open your mouth to speak (they’ll know you are
Singaporean).

Live in “gated, and gurkha-guarded communities”.

“Live in” – literally. DO NOT leave your property
unattended. When you buy the property, live in it.

It is NOT a good idea to buy a property and then leave it
vacant.

To really have a good idea about how you will adapt to the
foreign country:

Rent a unit for one
year. Live in that country for one year. If you enjoy your stay, then you may
consider buying a property. BEFORE YOU DO – ensure that you know everything you
need to know about “foreigners buying a local property”. Ask for detail. If you
don’t understand a vague print, use a magnifying glass. DO NOT be intimidated
by legal jargon. You have the right to understand the terms in layman language.

Do not buy a foreign property for the purpose of renting it
out.  It is NOT easy to rent it out.

Do not buy a foreign property for use as a “vacation
home”.  DO NOT leave your house vacant.
Thieves will break in.

Some of us have already moved to JB, successfully. They say,
“Blend in, don’t stand out.”

Thus, you
will not see them waving a red banner with yellow print proclaiming, “We are
Singaporeans living in JB.”

End of their feedback.

Silverhairs members have toyed with the idea of retiring in
Chiang Mai, Yunnan, JB, Penang, Batam, Bandung…

The most important consideration – are you willing to leave
your family and friends in Singapore?

Even if the answer is vaguely “maybe….” I’d encourage you to spend a little more time to re-evaluate your
strategy.

That was all I wish to share with you.

I wish you all the best.
