“Gathering fellow members to join in bulk purchases” is encouraged

A topic was raised to me at the recently monthly gathering.  It’s about "Gathering fellow members to join in bulk purchases".  We had also members raising this sometime in the forum; but members have not taken this idea up.  Actually, it was Jonathan Ong, who raised this up with me; and I remembered Kenneth Tan had also raised this before, with ovaltines.

Some members had raised ideas of co-operatives too.  Put it this way, I support this idea, although I don’t think we need to set up a co-operative.  The doors are open; and if you yourself want to purchase a product, and you know a company is willing to give you a good discount if you can gather 5 persons to buy the same product with a 10% discount, by all means, go ahead and let other members know, through the Club’s forum.  Make sure it is a good deal and offer.  It can be a cruise, 3 months supply of ovaltine, 3 sets of notebooks, 20 kopitiam vouchers, a car pool, two-to-go trip to anywhere, anything…

As long as we keep out of MLM products, I hope you can share your good buys with other members.  State the original price and the offer price or discount.  State the closing date.  Please do not use this as an advertising, even if you have no interest.

If you do not get the number of people to participate in the bulk purchase, please let members know by the closing date.  This would be courtesy.

I have created a new category called "Group buying".

Dear Freinds,

Calling all Volunteers

Time flies. THe Silverhairians did a very good job for two years, by entertaining the old folks in with Dancing and Karaoke. They loved it very much and brought them cheers and laughter . This year they are looking forward to this event again. The musicians can bring their instruments.

It would be great, if someone can head this event.  Many thanks.  God Bless.

Let us explore one of Singapore’s oldest burial ground which is the final
resting place of many Chinese pioneers; many of whom helped shaped our Nation.
In fact, BBC is more than a cemetery; it is 1 of the last few remaining patches
of wilderness rich in flora and fauna and certain wild life. There are some
large trees which have grown to majestic heights and, looking up from
underneath 1 of these trees gives a sense of awe.  Plenty of light, not creepy
at all along the main paths which are relative wide.
Expect to see horses as there is a riding school & polo club nearby.
Join us to appreciate the area’s historical, cultural and spiritual
aspects,,, before it is gone!

Another gateway to nature, MacRitchie Reservoir is Singapore’s oldest reservoir.
Gazetted as a heritage building, the zig-zag bridge and bandstand has been
reconditioned and restored. Experience walking in ankle-deep water and getting
your feet wet on the submerged boardwalk to be in close contact
with water plants and aquatic life.  A relax walk along the boardwalk trail.
Enjoy a beautiful sunset at the reservoir against the backdrop of dense rainforest.

We shall end the walk at the Mushroom Café.
It serves a wide range of food.  They have chicken, beef stew served with rice,
mee siam, curry puffs, icecream, chendol, chicken wings, coffee, many types,

Survey on “How to make SHC more vibrant?”

Hi May Woo,

I need your help to create a survey.   First, I shall get feedback on what are the possible questions from members.

Hi everybody,

All of us have either participated in the Club’s forum, in different events organised by fellow members and have organised activities for other members.  Among us, some of us are just reading the Club’s chat, not participating or waiting for a later date to participate or to organise an activity.  Some of us are not keen to participate.

Some of us feel the club can be more vibrant.  Of course, each of us have different perception of "What is vibrant?"

Well, I am going to ask May to create a survey with 10 questions which will be sent to all members.  I think a survey would be interesting.  You are invited to write here a question, which would be part of the 10 questions we will ask.  "How to make SHC more vibrant?".  Include 3 or 5 multiple choice answers. The top 10 most relevant questions will be chosen to form the survey.

Closing date:  15 April 2012.

I hope you will participate.

Some Q and A when I visit outside

When I visited outside last month, I encountered the following questions and answers:

Q and A 1

A lady asked me: “Do you think the ladies here
charming?”

I replied: “Of course. Here, the ladies who were in their 20s
like roses, those who were in their 30s like a love song and who were 40 become
perfect”

The lady asked again: “How about those after 40?”

I mulled over for a while and replied: "No comment. As no matter what their age are, all the ladies here never look over 40"

Q and A 2

A lady asked me: "Do you like the ladies here more, or like the ladies in Singapore more?"

I replied: "I like all the ladies who like me"

Q and A 3

One night, it was late, someone knock on my door. When I opened the door, I found a beautiful young lady standing outside.

When she saw me, she showed embarrassed and said: "Sorry, I should knock at the wrong door"

I said: "the door is right , but the time has belated for 40 years"

……More GOODNESS:
Walking is one of the simplest forms and also the most effective form of exercise. Good for sedentary
workers!

Regular walking, like most aerobic activities, is good because cardio-vascular exercise strengthens the
heart and lungs, increasing overall fitness.

Walking is low impact.   It does not have the same potential for injury as jogging or other strenuous forms
of activities, yet offers all the benefits.

Founder had asked me to mention the benefits of walking.  So here goes…..

Some BENEFITS mentioned by doctors are:

1)  good for bones and improves the body’s cardiovascular system. It also helps boost circulation.
2)  helps to drain the lower legs of excess fluid and can help prevent varicose veins through the pumping
      action of the calf muscles.
3)  people tend to be able to walk at a consistent speed than run, it is a more beneficial form of
      tissue-cleansing.
4)  also better for the spine than running, as it puts less stress on the discs.   Human beings were
designed for constant movement, not sitting in cars or in front of computers, which causes negative
      pressures on our spinal cord.
5)  Regular walking is excellent for spinal discs, which receive minerals and vitamins through the
      pumping action it causes.

A kid in your mind

Once upon a time, a friend asked me:

"Someone said  – everyone have a kid in their mind, have you? If you have a kid in your mind, what is he like?"

I mulled over for a while, and answered:

"I think there is a kid in my mind. When he comes to act, even a boring man like me will become  a little bit naughty, like to laugh and make the other laugh. But the kid in my mind doesn’t like many people, he only comes out when there is a small group of friends and there are someone I like or love"

I would also like to ask the other members:

"Do you have a kid in your mind? If yes, what is he/she like?"

Oldest child’s ‘responsibility’ to pay for younger sibling’s college tuition?

When I heard of this expectation from some parents, I went, ‘You’ve got to be
kidding!’

This is the situation.  A dad with two children, who can ‘only’ afford
to pay for one college tuition automatically feels that the oldest child,
by token of being the oldest of the two, deserves his support and really
expects this child who will be working (let’s hope so) by then to support
and pay for his younger sibling’s college tuition.

When the dad was asked why can’t he put the money aside for the younger
child instead since this second son is more brainy – academic wise whereas
the older brother is not and is struggling with getting decent grades?

Classic reply; this is how it is in a Chinese family.
WHAT??!!  REELI??  Am I missing something here?  I am Chinese,
too, but fail to see the ‘logic’.

When further questioned what makes him think the older brother would give a
shiat about the younger brother, let alone put him thru college, the dad smiles
stupidly and says, well, it is the older brother’s responsibility, not
his.  Good grief.

He has conveniently overlooked the fact that the older son may not even be
able to support himself; how else is he going to support his younger brother
even if he wants to?  Shakes head…….

Needless to say, the younger son is aware of this and is already hurt and
sad.  Poor child.

Your take, please.

What if you cannot get through Terence’s head?

Hi everybody,

There could be occasions where you have a wonderful idea or suggestion, and you decide to approach Terence. You lay your idea or plan in front of him, but he finally says sorry, no, not accepted or not allowed.

Perhaps, I was not able to see the advantages or benefits of the idea. Or, I felt that this is too difficult to implement or the idea runs counter to our objective.

Well, let me give you another possible option. There are some members in the club whom I consult from time to time, so that I can hear a different perspective. They are also pretty outspoken.

Over the years, I have trusted their judgement and their dedication towards SilverHairsClub. I also tend to accept their views. Well, if you feel your ideas and suggestions needs pursuing, despite my saying no, or I am just arrogant or sheer idiotic, speak to some of these members. If you can convince them, I am very likely to accept their recommendations.

Give your idea a try.

So, do catch up with these boys and gals, it’s probably a better way or another way if you hit a wall.

Old Age – The Last Lap

  • How does one want to spend the last lap of one’s life? with angst? with upset when one’s pride/ego is bruised? gripe? …
  • The ‘king’ in *Eccl. thought he was a superior being as he was very clever and good at acquiring power and wealth. Then he realised Death would come for him and LEVEL  him with the poor and the foolish he despised. Defeated, he lamented in agony "all is vanity and a striving after wind"
  • I would like to have serenity in my old age. Question is – how to acquire/have this state of mind  (serenity) in old age? What personal qualities/character traits would be an advantage in this quest?

Constructive comments and feedback are welcome. :)

Swimming, anyone?

The doctor give me six weeks to improve my diet and bring down my glucose level from 13 to 7 otherwise I will go on the needle. This is a challenge to myself whether I can avoid it.

Last night I dream of the dread needle and break out in cold sweat and this morning I pull myself out of bed and headed for Safra Mount Faber for 10 laps of freestyle and breast stroke. I reckon I will need to do it every morning from 8:00am to 8:30am. No more late nights as I normally sleep at about 2:00am, have to hit the sack before midnight.

I need moral support here, anyone with similar concern would like to join me? We will have it here at Safra and if there is any other venue convenience do let me know. We may consider any other day of the week or other timing.

Swimmingly yours,

Dan

Secrets of Happy Couples

Dear All

I have always been intrigued by how couples (married or living together) stay
happy even way after the pheromone-crazy feeling has fizzled and they no longer
just want to stay in bed.

Some say it’s doing things together, not taking each other for granted,
giving each other space etc etc.

Whenever I see old couples, bent and shuffling yet holding hands,
awww………sooo sweet, I give them a big smile.  Sometimes they smile
back, sometimes they glare at me, especially the wives, kekekekeee.  Oh
well.

Share with us, darlings, if you are one of the happy couples or know of
people who are.  Hey, even your own child’s happy
marriage/relationship.

Mine failed, so wanna know what I could have done better or what HE could
have done better.  Gosh.

MARCH MONTHLY GATHERING – 29/3/12 (Thursday)

Dear Members

This will be my 2nd time leading a monthly meeting.
First one was held in August 2009 3 months after I joined the first gathering (when I was still innocent and naive and took up the call of then CM Dolly Lim). This time it’s due to an enthusiastic voice calling "Frisna, I can’t be the EO for March, can you please help me?" I said "why don’t you try another person or inform the CM, maybe she can find the replacement" but she said "no  lah, i prefer to find the replacement myself" Voila, dear Audrey (a very friendly, helpful and responsible lady) here I am!

Date: 29 March 2012 (Thursday)
Time: 18.00 – 21.00
Place: Hans Cafe, PARK MALL #B1-03 (separate section just for SHC)
MRT: Dhoby Ghaut
Buses:  7,14,16,36,65,77,106,111,124,128,162,167,171,174,175,190,700,971E
+ others that stop along Clemenceau ave

Fee : Order whatever you want from a la carte menu or from the set meal list (thread # 9)

Agenda:1. Introduction of new members (fun way) and old (esp non active) members
2. Quiz/Games (yes, with prizes for winners)

4. Any other matters (future activities announcement, interest groups program etc)

Do Bad Habits Die Hard?

Dear All

Does the above proverb ring true?

There is a difference between habits and bad habits though.  Habits such
as driving to work, making your cup of Joe (coffee) – I would call it being on
autopilot; things that we do without having to wreck our
brains.

On the other hand, bad habits are hard to break; one tends to ‘fall off the
wagon’ so to speak.  For instance, losing weight and gaining it back by
bingeing/stuffing one’s face, stop smoking but greedily drawing in lungfuls of
nicotine when the need is soooo unbearable etc etc.

Bad habits literally have a vicelike grip on one’s mind and behavior – reeli
reeli hard to break.

Share with us your bad habits and if you have managed to overcome yours,
awesome!  All the more we need to hear/learn from you.

Anxiously waiting, darlings.

600,000 people over 65 by 2020; the latest budget, CPF Life, increasing productivity. What do all these mean to us, SilverHairs?

We are not able to turn back the clock.  In less than 10 years time, there will be more than 600,000 Singaporeans over the age of 65.  By 2030, there will be ONE million Singaporeans over 65 years of age.  We may be fit now, but we are a part of this group.

In recent weeks, there is a lot of talk in the papers and in forums about the budget, and what it means to the elderly and the poor.  There is also stress of improving productivity.  And, changes made to CPF Life.  And, now one day a week off for domestic helpers.  What does this mean to us?

Join the discussion in SilverHairsClub.com; share your thoughts.  Strictly no politics.  Let’s welcome as many positive ideas and suggestions.  Hopefully, some government body or corporation may pick up some of our feedback.

I love especially their original chilly crab dressing. So lets have salad for dinner for a change? $15 per head including juice.
After the dinner lets cross the road and adjourn to The Tower Club of which i am a founder member, for coffee and tea , where we can further explore some business opportunities that members have to offer. The SHC members will have 5 minutes to introduce their business and another 5 for questions and answers. http://www.tower-club.com.sg/
So here it goes:

Lowering the minimum age from 45 to 40

Dear All

I have wanted to ask Terence for the longest time to lower the minimum age to
join Silverhairs Club from 45 to 40.  Did not bother until now.

Why do I have this idea?  I believe the club needs new blood, there is
only a 5-year age difference to join, the early forties to mid-forties will add
more vibrancy and possibly more ideas.

I came across SHC from clicking here and there over here in HK and read with
interest.  After reading the site for a few nites I decided to join as I
qualified in both the minimum age of 45 at that time and being a
Singaporean.

If I was not 45 or above then, I would be frustrated not being able to
join as I was reaching out to my fellow Singaporeans.  Think I would have
written to Terence and he would have told me to wait till I reach 45.  My
comeback would be ‘I may not live to 45!!  Gosh.’

Have brought this topic up with Terence at our meeting and we could have
easily decided whether or not to do so but I believe in discussing with our
members, so let us hear your constructive opinions.

Discussion will close on Sat March 17 at
23:59.

Monthly Gatherings – 2012

Dear All

Our monthly gathering is important for members to get together to catch
up with and to meet other members.  It is an informal gathering to
mingle.

If you have been chatting with members whom you have yet to meet, the monthly
gathering will be a good place to finally meet.  Even if you have not
chatted with some members before, take this opportunity to make new friends;
you may be pleasantly surprised.

At last month’s gathering, I was very happy to come across some very sweet
and pleasant members whom I met for the first time.  See, first dates are
exciting!

As with any gathering, Event Organizers (EOs) are needed which brings me
to bring up the following list of EOs for the monthly gatherings in
2012 which Terence posted on Dec 7 2011.

  • Jan – Lily Ho
  • Feb – Janie Leong
  • Mar – Audrey Wong  Frisna Tan
  • Apr – Peter Lim
  • May – Dan Huang
  • Jun – Richard Wong
  • Jul – Peri Liew
  • Aug – Victor Khor
  • Sep – Henry Foo
  • Oct – May Woo
  • Nov – Caroline Gee
  • Dec – Jane Tan
  • Looking at the above list, Audrey Wong is the EO for our March monthly
gathering unless she is unable to do so.  Keeping fingers and toes crossed
that Audrey will organize for us.

    Let’s hear from her.
