Terrain is EASY.
Bring your cameras – very scenic!
Toilet facilities — Only at MRT stations.
Rain or shine, we will be there!

Let’s explore yet another natural forest reserve.  A LUSH forest of tropical trees and shrubs, Enjoy its peace
and quietness…… GOOD for mental health, mood and some eye-cercise!     emoticon

I was there when I was  probably around 0.9m. I recalled to get to the reservoir one has to walk on a long
paved road, from a distance a rocket-shaped tower looms into view.  As I stand nearer to it, it seems to
tower over my small frame.

This iconic observation tower still stands tall and straight but, gone is the feeling of its towering presence;
though from its top it still provides a panoramic view of the waters and surrounding greenery.

Seletar Reservoir was damaged during the Japanese war in 1941.  It was renamed Upper Seletar Reservoir
after the construction of  Lower Seletar Reservoir.  It is one of the 4 main reservoirs and its nature reserve
acts as a water catchment area, its waters is used for drinking and daily usage after treatment for the
people in Singapore.
Upper Seletar Reservoir has been expanded twice in capacity and in 1999 it became a marked conservation site!

When did you last visit Seletar Reservoir?
Since you were a child like me or……   Never ever?      Come, join us!          emoticon

Stay cool Be cool!          emoticon

Language Tips: Frequently misused words

  • By chance i saw this *article about the English language in the S.T. Monday (28th) paper and i thought seeing it was better than seeing a $5 note on the ground. (lol!). Because of it’s educational value, i thought i should alert members who had missed it to check it out.
  • The frequently misused words in the article include revert, whereby, everyday/every day, less/lesser, mature/matured and welcome/welcomed. The writer explains how the words should be used and gives good examples.
  • Language Tips  series appears on every Monday and it’s a pity to miss these free ‘lessons’.

Cataract surgery

Kok Chiew, Angela, Boon Liang, James Tan, Jimmy Tsin, Peggy Tan, Winnie Tan,

KC, Inez Lim, Lim Geok Suan, Kenneth…(NOT IN ANY ORDER OF IMPORTANCE.)

Thank you for responding to my call for help, regarding cataract surgery.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience – by making comments on the forum, and by emails.

All of you have contributed to my decision-making process.

I had cataract surgery done at Tan Tock Seng Hospital – my right eye last week, and my left eye today. The good doctor applied the phaco emulsification technique.

It was indeed a “simple procedure” – painless. Post surgery, after a one-hour rest, I was discharged from the day surgery center. I can see immediately after surgery, albeit a little blur. As the day progressed, the eye’s focus became clearer.

Some of you wrote, asking me to update regarding my cataract surgery. The above update is brief. If you need more detail, please let me know.

I’d like to thank everyone, once again, for responding to my call for help.

Those who missed the discussion on cataract surgery may like to click on this link https://silverhairsclub.com/?p=4100#comments

Job Opportunities at ServiceWorks Pte Ltd

Since ServiceWorks Pte Ltd
became a Corporate Member on 11 May 2012, we have received a few enquiries on

some asked about the criteria of the candidates that we are looking for.

We specialise in Service Consulting work and training in Service

Many companies know the importance of Service Standards and want to achieve
them through corporate training.  Unfortunately, they may not have the
‘know-how’ or the resources to do it.  We work with companies to develop

Service Standards coaching through us found that their staff diligently
practice the company’s corporate Service Standards at their
workplace.

good communication skills and a customer-focused mind for

  • Sales and Marketing

  • Mystery Shop

you are probably the person that we are looking for.

HOW CAN WE
COMMUNICATE WITH
YOU?

Please feel free to send us your CV or drop us a line if you have some
experience in any of the above-mentioned areas or keen to learn but have
no prior related experience.  We will be shortlisting
candidates by 29 May 2012 (Tue) for a briefing on 1 June 2012
(Fri) and hope that you will be one of the shortlisted

We offer full-time and part-time positions and we look forward to hearing
from you real soon.

Next step after “What makes SHC more vibrant?”

Hi fellow members,

SHC has been around for 6 years.  We have made success with a number of activities.  We have also made good progress with membership.  However, there are some areas which I feel far more can be done.

One is the imbalances of membership sexes.

The other is a review of "Each member having to organise an activity during the lifetime of their membership". We rely too much on the regular organisers.

The last is "How do we handle domant members?.  We have many members, and they are contented with just reading what goes on in the club.

We have done a survey recently on "How to make SHC more vibrant".  While the numbers are small, the feedback is important.  We will need to review some of the top few feedback".

I will be seeking a discussion from active members, who have organised activities and get their feedback on how we can progress from here.  If you had been an EO, you will receive an email from me within a week.

Doing meaningful work, part-time or fulltime during your free time or weekends

Today, many Singaporeans are gainfully employed, either fulltime or part-time.  So, are SilverHairs members in the SilverHairsClub.  Most are well positioned for retirement, with a roof over their head, travel regularly during the year, participate in different kinds of activities and have a positive outlook towards their SilverHairs years.  You can tell many SilverHairs are contented with their lives.

There are also many SilverHairs who are looking forward to keeping themselves busy with meaningful work, especially part-time work.  Many SilverHairs have a wealth of experience from their previous career, their hobbies and interests and a host of knowledge acquired over the years.

Singapore is definitely short of experienced people, like yourself, to fulfill different roles in society.  If you are looking to offer your services to Singaporean families and organisations, you may like to publicise your availability and service via SilverHairs Enterprise PL (SHE).  SHE will accept only chargeable services.

SHE will offer these services to the public via advertising and other media.  You will be contacted, when an inquiry comes through via its reservations and appointments system.  If you like to participate, please email directly to SHE@SilverHairsClub.com your interest.  An application form will then be sent to you.

Sue Tan – Introduction

I registered to be a member of SHC last month and after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing, finally picked up the courage to sign up for two upcoming events.  You see, I have been a stay-home person for the longest time and keeping friends became more and more of something I needed the least.  After all, I have a husband and children to fill my days and I could count on their shoulders and ears whenever I needed to borrow one.  Going out of the house alone is something I hardly do, except when I pick my children from school in the quiet comfort of my car.  My personal space by now extended to the next MRT station. Recently, my youngest son had to independently travel home from school via public transport because we sold off one car, leaving me with one less chore, and only one chore left – cleaning house.  Well, I have become fat and lazy and I don’t like where I seem to be heading – nowhere! Hence, stumbling on SHC’s website at this point in my life seems like a blessing. I want to be a new person, make new friends, try new things, go on new adventures but I’m afraid I have to do this with an old body. So when you meet me at my first SHC outing which is the upcoming picnic, please know I have a yearning to make new friends but old habits that need some forgiving.  Apologies if I don’t make the first move. I may have forgotten how ;p Sincerely,

Sue Tan

Retirement living: Looking to studio apartments for seniors for inspiration

  • Today i visited a block of studio apartments for seniors near Toa Payoh Central and was glad to see how PLEASANT the environment is. The common areas are SPACIOUS and CLEAN. The common corridors outside the individual units are WIDE and UNCLUTTERED. The units are small bed-sitters, bright with windows on one wall. In the bathroom is an emergency alert cord.
  • The two lifts are BIG and stop at EVERY floor. On the third level are two cozy GARDENS.  Seats are PLENTIFUL and INVITING!
  • Nearby are other blocks of flats, shops, a hawker centre, a market….
  • Could HDB adapt this concept of studio apartment living for seniors with smaller nest-eggs to cater to seniors with bigger nest-eggs by building bigger studio apartments and providing more facilities? But however HDB modifies/adapts, it must keep to the 30-year lease and the non- marketability of the studio apartments for the ‘richer’ seniors. These two conditions will keep out the sharks and the profit-driven entrepreneurs.

Dementia

I believe that most of us have read about the rising incidence of dementia.

Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. It affects memory, thinking, language, judgment,
and behavior. Most types of dementia are nonreversible (degenerative). Dementia
symptoms include difficulty with many areas of mental function, including:

  • Language
  • Memory
  • Perception
  • Emotional
    behavior or personality
  • Cognitive skills
(such as calculation, abstract thinking, or judgment)

Dementia usually first appears as
forgetfulness.

There is growing evidence that some kinds of mental exercises can help slow down dementia. To this end, I
am contemplating developing a series of mental exercises which may be used
hopefully to help slow the effect of dementia.

I have a series of mental
exercises which help children improve their learning abilities , you may want
to visit www.mindmax.com.sg to know a little more. I intend to modify certain portions of the training protocol to
suit senior citizens who may worry about the onset of dementia.

What I have in mind is not something commercial, but a social outreach—with trainers (SHC members) going
down to centres or elderly groups to train the centre helpers to run these programs.
So, it remains for me to size up how many SHCian are interested to do such
social outreach programs.

Badminton at Bukit Gombak stadium

Hi all.. the bookings for the courts at Bukit Gombak stadium is rather erratic – sometimes Thursdays, sometimes Fridays – because we can’t predict the enthusiasm of the public who sometimes choped/booked the courts before we do .. (sigh..) So, for next week, booking is on 18th May, Friday and then the following week, it will be Thursday, 24th May, at the same time of 10.00am to 11.00am. The regular group will be reminded via SMS but all are welcome to join. Cheers

Taiwan TV drama “Night market life” – Why I like watching this series?

Whenever I am in Singapore on a Sat or Sun, I would rush home to keep a date with the TV drama LOVE. Now that the series has ended, I found another one "Night Market Life".  Never been so dedicated about such Peyton Place"  type shows until this late age of my life. When I travel and I have the time, I would try to watch the drama online 1-2 hours via XinMSN, but nowadays, it is not possible to view them due to territory restrictions.  But, this part of my life is not what I want to share with you.

I find these dramas very down to earth.  They are always about people, and always about love and jealously. In Night Market Life, the show starts with the actors and actresses as young kids, and finally now the kids have grown to adults.  The boys and girls get to know one another, got married and continue their adult life journey. Along the way, they find someone exciting, and make effort to spend time with the new found friend.  And, soon the relationship gets stronger, and good or bad, right or wrong, a new bond exists between people.

I am one of those in this group.  That’s how I got into my second relationship.  I still dare not say if I was right or wrong.  During the change, I had such a strain on my life, that some or especially my female friends called me all kinds of names, with nasty attachments.  But what can I do?  It’s done and life must go on.  I treasure what I have today and have not regretted it since.

As I get older, my outlook of life changes.  I tend to see human beings as chickens in the farm or fishes in the aquarium.  We run around or swim around, and we meet many other people.  In Night Market Life, the starting of all the different relationships are always sweet and pleasant.  Then, very quickly, life changes for all the actors and actresses.  Soon, one or both parties suffer.  Who is right and who is wrong?  As TV viewers, do we have the right to condemn him or her?

Allow me to share with you how I feel.  Neither do I condemn, nor do I bother myself.  I feel I have no right to say whether she is wrong or he is wrong.  I do not feel it is right to intervene, interfere or dissuade either parties. In a TV drama, there will always be an ending.  The actors and actress are far away from me.

So, why do I crazily watch these dramas?  Because they are a reality in human lives, that’s why.  This is my personal view, hope you respect it’s my view.  Agree or disagree, I only hope we all respect the actions and decisions of fellow members.

Feel free to express your views and give your comments.  I just read that Obama administration is in favour of gay marraiges.  I just cannot believe it.  By the way, I am still a no Saint.

Band looking for a Drummer

We get together to jam in the afternoon at Pasir Ris on a weekday. So you need to be a retiree to engage in this pastime. The room where we make our music is air-conditioned and we play the oldies made popular by Elvis, Cliff, Shadows, Eagles etc. We have the full set of hardware – drums, guitars and amplifiers – so you just need to bring yourself. If you think you can be part of our outfit please drop me a note at itti16@singnet.com.sg. It’ll be a pleasure to hear from you.

Thailand – a driving and coastal trip in June 2012

Again, I dont have the dates.  Likely dates are Jun 9, 10 and 11, or 16, 17, 18, all dates inclusive.  Do read on. But, dont buy your tickets yet.  I can only confirm around 28 May.

As usual, all my trips are disorganised, so I dont really know anything until we get into the car.

June is a hot month, but it can be just as fun.  This time, we are going on a driving holiday; which means participants drive, and i sit on the left side of the car.  Dont worry about the road signs, they usually have English text.  As long as you have a Singaporean licence, can can.

Like May, we shall have a coastal trip, scenic and romantic.  We get to drive along the coastal roads, stop where we like, eat when we feel like it and rest, when it is time.  You must have a Singapore licence.  Dont worry as I will sit next to you, and take over when you are tired.

The journey will cover most of where the May group will travel on.  We will cover places where the van would not want to travel to.  Food wise, simple and local.  Language, we try in whatever thai you know. Bring your camera, as  you are not likely to capture the scenes with any organised tours.  No cockroaches, as most would have die or killed by the may group.

Where we stay, you have to be game.  We see a place, we like it, we stay.  If not, we drive on.  Cost wise, it will be slightly more than travelling via a van, as the car is shared among 4 people, instead of 8 to a van.  At most, we will have two cars.  Likely cost per car is Baht 1,800 per day, fuel excluded.

We should have a mixed participation of 4 men and 4 women; not 2 men and 6 women.

Preference to participate will always be given to those who register before 20 May 2012.

How to play the guitar, for beginners?

Every since I was a school boy, I had always wanted to play the guitar.  Today, 30 years later, I still cannot play the guitar.  I had bought a guitar, played it for a few days, and then, I forgot where it was.  Recently, I met a couple of friends, during dinner, and I was impressed by a 60 year old member, who could play the guitar, and was playing old songs that we all like, same age lah.  So, I am now hot up to learn how to play the guitar.

Dementia is a serious concern, although it can affect all oldies.  We forget our parents, the names of our children and where we left that gold coin.  In SHC, I learn that two kinds of activities can delay the onset of dementia.  One is learning a new language, the other is playing a musical instrument.  Of course, there is mahjong and soduko.

Well, I determine this time to learn how to play the guitar.  First, I bought a guitar song book of old songs.  Second, I subscribe to an online video of a series of "How to play the guitar" for USD 19.  All done in one day.  My next step is to look out for a second hand guitar, suitable for strumming.  Maybe if Jassmine permits in her online fleamart, I can advertise to buy an used guitar.  I like to buy it this week.

What I hope to do is to attract other like-minded Silverhairs to join me in this dementia delaying activity.  Then we can meet once in a while, somewhere and play together.  I have decided to go for online training because I don think I can find a patient teacher, and also I can practise and play at my own time.

Anybody else, like to go along the same line as me.  Helpers would be appreciated, in forming small groups.  A chance to teach an old bird how to sing.

Terence Seah

SHC Registration list for an online beginners group (Guitar strumming):

  1. Terence Seah – a real beginner.
  2. Caroline Gee – beginner, wants to sing along
  3. Tang May – Picked up guitar before, stop and restarting.
  4. Johnny Pow – Played guitar during school days, and formed a band.
  5. Andrew Yeung – mid level
  6. Bobby Bok – sounds more than a beginner
  7. Lina Ng – beginner, at least has a junior and senior guitar
  8. Yew Kwong – beginner
  9. Karen Thio – beginner
  10. Andrew Yeung – mid level
  11. HC Lee – mid level
  12. Ann Giri – got a guitar from son, sounds like a beginner
  13. Celia Ng – sounds like more than a beginner.

Marvel superheroes!

When I was young, collecting Marvel comics was an obsession to me. Each month I would head for Marshall Rd where a stall is displaying all the titles. At that time a copy cost about 35 cents butl now a copy would cost as much as five dollars each.emoticon

I am fascinated with all the characters portrayed in the comics books. My favourites are Daredevil, Thor, The Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, Nick Fury agent of Shield and the X-men. I was just a boy then and without fail i would collect all the different titles. The colors and excitement presented in the comics was a constant delight to me.emoticon

I would go down various places in town especially the mama stalls where all the titles are on sale. I was by then a collector and laying my hands on whatever titles was on sale. If I run out of money I would dip into my late father pocket without his knowledge.emoticon

How many of you out there are fans of Marvel comics? Share with us your fantasies. I am thinking of organising a group to watch ‘the Avengers’ together, anyone keen?emoticon

  • The online flea mart for May is now
open for advertisements. Please familiarize yourselves with the rules
(refer to MARCH post) before placing an advertisement.
  • I would like to reiterate the
rationale for setting up this online flea mart: It is to provide an
    opportunity for members
to sell (or give away) THEIR OWN THINGS.

  • An advertisement where the advertiser
is acting the role of ‘middleman’ is NOT ALLOWED. NO COMPANIES may benefit, directly or indirectly, from this flea mart advertisement site.

Potluck Picnic at the Park – Saturday 19th May 2012

(This activity is in conjuction with May’s Monthly
Gathering.)

Dear fellow SHCians,

I have not organized any activity for quite some time and hopefully (crossing my fingers), some members will find the time, the day and the date of this Potluck Picnic convenient for them to join. My thanks to Dan Huang and Charles Chua for making the trip with me to recce the park on Monday 30th April’s morning. We have unanimously agreed on an excellent spot that is near the main road, bus stop and toilet facility. There is a sort-of shelter from the heat but not from the rain, lots of benches, grassy ground, trees and a lovely view of the cleaned-up Kallang River.

In my previous thread I received offers of help in provision of food and transportation from some members. I am very grateful for their kindness.

Details of this activity are as follow:-

  • E.O.s– Rosalind Lee, Dan Huang & Charles Chua
  • Day/Date    : Saturday 19th May 2012
  • Time           : 3.30 pm – 6.00 pm
  • Venue         : Meeting Point 2, Kallang Riverside Park
  • Map    : http://www.streetdirectory.com/asia_travel/travel/travel_id_19398/travel_site_1/

Meeting Point 2 is at the spot nearest to the pedestrian bridge linking the park to Crawford Street. If you look at the map, it is at the bottom left. There is a toilet facility near the spot we’re to meet.

What to Bring

  1. Yummy food or hot/cold drinks or disposable paper plates/cups/refuse bags.
  2. A mat or plastic sheet if you prefer to sit on the grassy patches.
  3. Foldable deck chairs if you have your own mode of transport.
  4. Hats/Caps/Umbrellas in case it rains…..:p

Members who are keen to join this activity will get to enjoy a relaxing afternoon picnicking with other members and taste the various dishes made/cooked/bought amidst serene surroundings.

Please register early stating what type of food you’ll be bringing. Kindly refrain from duplicating the same dish a member has already offered to bring (except for drinks/fruits).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
