Men’s night, Tues 7 May 2013

Details of 1st 2013 gathering

  • 313 @ Somerset,
  • Food Republic on Orchard Road, Somerset MRT.
  • Exact sitting location would be between Toast Box and Soup Guru.
  • Time: 1830 to 2100 hrs.

We shall have a Men’s night on Tues, 7 May 2013, from 1830 to 2100 hrs.  We are in the process of confirming the venue, and shall let you know within a week.  To the members who have come up with ideas on the venue, thank you.

men's night

Our aim is to have a regular place, once every two months when SHC men can pop in and get to know one another.  If the venue is suitable, we shall carry on with the place.  There will be no formalities. The Men’s night will usually be held on a weekday.  We will develop this event as we go along.

In all likelihood, we will not plan for food or drinks. Men will buy their own drinks and pay for the drinks as they are served.  This is to avoid complications of bill splitting.  Let’s make this a habit and procedure.

Please note the date, and I shall announce the venue soon.  Thank you.

The Internet Of Things!

You’re driving home and you’re stuck in traffic, it’s been a long day and you’re dying to get home and into a nice hot shower. You stop your vehicle on the side of the road and reach for your phone. With a few clicks, you connect to your home system, and instruct the house to prepare hot water, the air conditioner to start warming the house, the TV to look for a news channel and for the entrance lights to shine on the driveway.

After a few seconds of thought, you order the electric kettle to heat some water for coffee, and ask the fridge to order more milk from the closest supermarket. With a smile on your face, you return to the road, relaxed in knowing that a warm, lit and inviting home is waiting for you, with a hot shower to boot.

Much has been said about the advanced technology of our smartphones. What seemed like science fiction just 20 years ago, we can see coming into being right now – many of us carry a device that can contact almost anyone else in the world, and not only talk, but also send photos, files and movies, make video chats, post things on a huge number of social networks, play advanced games, listen to music – and the list gets longer every day, as the number of applications available to download and enhance these phones has long since passed a million.

So what is the next step in the evolution of the most popular electronic device? What does the future hold for our smartphones and the internet itself?

The future, agree most technology experts, is the ‘Internet of Things’.

The internet of things is a simple title for a complex idea. This is a future where our phone and our computers will not only be used for communication, photography and games, but will actually start to CONTROL the other objects in our lives, from anywhere we desire.

When will all this happen? Much sooner than you think.

Many companies are investing right now in the internet of things, and Cisco, one of the bigger communication and software companies in the world, predicts that by 2020, the market size of the internet of things will be worth about 14 trillion dollars, and no less than 50 billion (!) different devices, such as electronic devices, chips etc., will be also connected to the internet. This is a surprising forecast, especially as we’re talking about a future a mere 7 years away.

Experts predict also a great boom in employment when the internet of things begins, which will employ millions of people in the development, installation and maintenance of this new technological system.

For example, Google announced recently that it is developing a new system called “Android@home” which will allow smartphone owners to control home appliances and systems through their phone.

The options are limitless. Not for nothing we spoke to you of a future where you instruct the house to make itself hospitable before you get there. You will be able to unlock the front door for guests who arrived before you, or lock it if you forgot before leaving, you can turn off lights and cut the electricity to appliances with the push of a button.

This may sound far-fetched, but most experts believe that the internet of things revolution is right around the corner, and in a decade, most if not all modern houses will be equipped with such systems.

This achievement is made possible because today we are able to develop computer chips so small, that they are no thicker than a few hair strands. These chips can attach to any appliance without disrupting it’s functions, and their entire job is to receive instructions from you and pass them on to the device, they will be tiny and most importantly – cheap.

But the internet of things won’t stop at the home. What about the farmers? They will be able to hydrate plantations from a far, from anywhere they are. Farmers will be able to ‘implant’ tiny chips in the soil which will transmit, in real time, information about toxicity levels in the soil and how ready it is for planting, saving them a lot of trial and error. Chips can alert to animal life that is doing harm to the plants, and will look for signs of bad bacteria and plant diseases affecting the crops.

However, despite the ease and comfort these developments will bestow on our daily lives, the most important functions will invariably be in the field of medicine.

An example situation: You’ve just undergone a difficult operation, and you have a lot of rehabilitation to get through. Before you leave the doctor tells you: “If something happens, call me immediately!”
But it isn’t that simple to recognize dangerous signs, then get the doctor on the phone, explain what you think is happening, and then rush to the hospital. All this takes time you may not have, especially if you are suffering a cardiac event.

The internet of things may offer a better solution. During the operation, a tiny chip is injected into your body, to track signs of disease or a decline in your condition. When the chip identifies even the earliest warning signs, it updates the doctor in real time and even sends him specific information about your condition, so the doctor can make a quick decision, and maybe send you an ambulance without wasting time. Specific information is always better than trying to explain vague symptoms to the doctor. The chip can also alert your loved ones, and summon an ambulance itself if you are incapacitated and can’t reach a phone.

But it doesn’t stop in emergency care. We’ll also be able to monitor our daily health. If you are willing to inject (almost microscopic) chips in your body, and download the right application to your phone, you’ll be able to monitor your daily health, such as your blood pressure or your blood-sugar level. You’ll be able to detect if you are missing important vitamins or other nutrients. The applications will offer your solutions to your problem and will update you when your body returns to optimal condition.

Other chips will alert you to possible diseases developing in your body, from tooth decay to cancer, which can definitely save your lives by early detection, as many forms of disease can be cured if detected early enough. Such ease in monitoring your health and what you lack can add years to your life, and by some experts – even decades.

But don’t think only advantages lay ahead, each new technology also brings with it RISKS.

The biggest risk, say those who know, is a new form of terrorism that causes chaos, not with guns and bombs, but by hacking into the applications on our phones and causing devastation and misinformation. Some hackers will be able to implant false information about our health, instruct chips to ignore diseases, order our car to stop in the middle of the highway or turn on all the appliances in the street and cause huge problems in the electrical system. Talented hackers may be able to track your location, which makes kidnapping and assassination much easier.

Another risk is over-reliance on the information we receive through these applications, until we ignore the natural signals coming from our bodies and minds. We must take into account that electronics do fail, the software or the chip may malfunction, and cause us to ignore real symptoms our body is trying to tell us about, with possibly tragic results.

Despite these risks, the internet of things opens the door to a huge and unlimited variety of options which may ease our lives, improve our productivity and most importantly – keep us healthier. The future is coming, and all that remains to be seen is what our lives will look like when we open the door to the internet of things.

Badminton at Bukit Gombak Stadium on Thursdays 10am

Hi All.. the badminton at Bukit Gombak indoor stadium is celebrating its 1-year anniversary this month..
Thanks to all loyal, persistent and consistent participants, we have a regular group of about 10 regular and some irregular players.
Singapore is small and Bukit Gombak stadium is situated just at the door-step of Bukit Gombak MRT station, we hope that more badminton enthusiasts would come and join us..
The skills of the players varies – so come and look-see.
Just bring yourself, proper shoes and attire – with or without rackets, shuttlecocks provided – and join us for a sweaty sessions. In fact, the indoor stadium can be quite a sauna.. :)
If you are not keen to play, you can still come and join us for off-courts chit chat and lunch/coffee around 12 noon – usually at the food centres around the area.
(Unless Mr. Johnny Pow would like to organise exotic places like Bollywood Organic Vegetable gardens again..)
Hope to see you.
Cheers

EOs and ECs can run simple polls (Try this poll)

Many EOs and ECs are cautious about members response to an activity that they plan to organise.  It is true that it can be disappointing to find low or even no response to an idea or event.  Our upgraded software allows us to run simple polls on this website.

  • Sometimes, you may want to know if your event is an accepted idea.
  • Sometimes, you may not be sure which days of the week participating members prefer.
  • If you are not sure, if your event is acceptable, feel free to speak with any of the senior SHC members.  They will be able to guide you as to whether the event will be workable.

So EOs and ECs, this poll service is for you.  Think about it, and if you wish to run a poll, do email me at terences@SilverHairsClub.com.  Note, these are intended to help you, but please keep the polls simple.  You may also write to me for non-event type of polls.

Hit-and-run accident and the cyclist is….

Dear SHC Members,

You might have read in the Straits Times on Thursday 11Apr main section Pg A6 and 12Apr Homne Pg B12 – the cyclist Mdm Rosna Rausee is non other than our member Ms Rose White.  She suffered spinal injuries and a blood clot in her brain and is in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.  It was mentioned that she has two daughters.

I had met Rose White twice some years back.  A lady who is sweet, lively, jovial!

I wish to “pass the hat around” for a token gift contribution in this moment of need for her and family.  Terence has endorsed this love gift.

The funds collected will be given together with a list of the contributors and amount.

Please do a transfer of your monies to my POSB savings account 542-107-561  — as the information is not reflected in the bank statement, kindly indicate your name and amount here.

Closing date: Thursday 25th April, 2013 by 09:00hrs ie., 9am.

Closing date: Monday 22nd April, 2013 by 18:00hrs

I want at least 2 person to go with me to present the above to her/family at the hospital.  I will inform the date later.

Thanks!

Terence,

Without it, how are we going to Upload/Insert pictures ????? Please check and rectify or is there something wrong on my Dashboard ?

Thanks.

Feedback on our Club software upgrade

Sometimes, you may find your dashboard too cluttered, as you just need to read the comments.

Do look at your screen options.  See arrow below.  You can choose what appears on your screen, especially if you just want to read the comments.

We have the latest version of WordPress.  This software is used by millions of users around the world.  It is also highly recommended by many hosting companies, including Network solutions, which manages global domain names.

For some reasons, some of you may have difficulties finding yourself around the software.  Others may find the new upgrade cumbersome.  Please keep trying.  Where we can find a solution, we definitely will.  No software is perfect.  Any changes we intend to make or improve do cost us time, money and effort.

I have come to be aware that some members complain behind the forum, and feel that we should not have gone ahead with the upgrade, without testing.  These members felt that we should have done complete tests before upgrade.  A lot of tests have been done. Unfortunately, these members do not offer any feedback during the test period.

These members also complain that we do not organise seminars to help members understand how to use the Club’s software.

It is interesting to hear that members complain that the upgrade is a waste of money, and that the costs should have been channelled to other uses.  At this stage, it is important that I highlight that members do not pay for the upgrade.  The upgrade was the result of feedback from members.

SilverHairsClub.com is maintained, hosted and managed at no charge to members.  Such words are not necessary.  To these members, please do not incite other members into using this example as to how badly the Club is being run.  I do not need to highlight who these members are; but you definitely can do a part for the Club.

ETHNIC EXPERIENCE – GAWAI (harvest festival)

Date: June 13 to 16 2013

Venue: Singai, Bau

The 4 days 3 nights trip to Sarawak includes rafting (subject to river conditions); visit caves; handicrafts; ethic cooking, music and dance; mingling with the locals and of course, working together to achieve a common goal. Part of the itinerary is to be part of the Gawai Festival, an occasion that celebrates the season of rice harvest or padi harvesting season. It is also an opportunity for new friendships, family reunions and paying respects to the elders. It’s a whole new cultural experience when you get to join in the preparation of the festival prior to the GAWAI celebration! Be part of the local community and enjoy the ethnic cuisine including the Tuak (Rice Wine), the traditional delicacies and lots of merry-making!

It is a trip you don’t get to enjoy that often, blending into another culture, learning and respecting the adventures that it brings. Cultural diversity not only enriches everyone lives in countless ways we imagine, it fosters an unspoken relationship with our experiential, environmental and learning experience.

DON’T MISS THIS GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!!!

How about an afternoon BBQ at the East Coast Park on a weekend? Sat 18 May 2013

During the earlier days of the SilverHairsClub, we had held a couple of BBQs at the East Coast Park.  On some occasions, the event coincide with the cycling activity.  On one occasion, it was a standalone late afternoon, and I remembered we almost had to beg the rain to stay up in the skies.

Perhaps, it is time to have another one.  Here’s the map.

bbqLet’s say:

We get the charcoal, the starters, the drinks, the water, the BBQ sauce, the plates, the fork and spoons, cups, ice, rubbish bags, the tissue paper from the shop, near Area C.  We have a reasonable charge.

We book two pits from the National Park.

We get to park at carpark C1.  There is an under pass to Marine Parade Promenade.

We get to swim, sun tan and laze around the greens.  Show off our swimming gear, play netball or badminton.  Or go cycling after the BBQ makan.

And, we have an afternoon BBQ, say 12nn to 1600 hrs.

And, everybody brings one pc of sausage, 200 grams of beef or a corb of jargon or one pc of chicken wings from their supermarket.

And, we clean up the place by 1600 hrs.  We can also not clean the place up, and pay someone to clean it up behind us.

Date confirmed –  Sat 18 May 2013 at BBQ pits C13 & C14.

The Business Round table will be recreated soon

As requested by SHC members with entrepreneurial and business interests, the Business Round Table was created, just over a year ago.  This was felt necessary by a number of members, although we had no experience as to how to get it started.

Initially, this monthly event was led by Jeffrey Lim and assisted by Susan Chan.  It began with a  series of dinner events, and was attended by approx 10 – 20 members each time.  The intended objective was to provide business networking among SHC business groups and entrepreneurs.  It wa a good starter series of business meetings, although at the end of it all, the EOs and some members felt that the Business Round Table did not achieve its desired objectives.  The EOs of the Business Round Table  gatherings were rotated from volunteer members.

Here are some of the feedback from EOs and participating members:

  1. There are not enough participating members, meaning no critical mass.  The average participation was about 1 – 2 round tables.
  2. While there are members with interests to discuss business issues, there is a view that “after 45” is not a good time to start a business, especially when one is not already in business.
  3. A number of non-entrepreneurs lacked understanding of the purpose of the Business Round Table.
  4. There is also a mis-match in the objective.  The Round Table was intended to be the focal point to meet and know who does what; and that any further business would then take place outside the Round Table.
  5. Some members had felt that the Round Table was a place to look for job opportunities; although this was not the intention.
  6. Interesting, other participants felt that the Round Table had turned out to be an expensive makan dinner.

The above are good feedback, and the experience from early Business Round Table gatherings can help us readjust our strategy.  Yes, many members are still working, for companies while others may be working part-time.  For those who are in business, and wishing to engage other members who are also in business, please share your thoughts.  Yes, you may have a business idea, and wish to start it on your own or with fellow shareholders, this could also be an opportunity; and that other members may be interested in your plans too.  MLM excluded.

Please share your thoughts, as we are looking at recreating the Business Round Table activity.

Thank you Jeffrey Lim and Susan Chan for setting the stage.

What is the Internet? Talk on 20-04-2013 (Saturday)

Hello fellow SHCians,

IT For SeniorsFor your information, I am doing a repeat of this talk (last done in Nov/2012) in Leng Kee CC (5-minutes walk from Redhill MRT) on the abovementioned date. The time is from 3.00PM to 5.00PM. For those interested, please go to link itforseniors.wordpress.com or meetup.com/itforseniors for more details. The classroom can only accommodate 20 persons and registration will close at 20.

Preamble: The quest for knowledge is a human instinct.  In our golden years, we are not so able to travel far and long distances. But not to worry, we have the Internet, a worldwide network where we can network with our love ones/friends, find out, enjoy, see a movie, etc., practically anything we can think of, most of it is for FREE and at the comfort of our home. All we need to invest in is a broadband Internet plan and a smart device (desktop/laptop computer, iPad, tablet, etc.). Last but not least, we must know how to use the tools we have invested in.

NB: I am also doing voluntary work with YWCA. At the moment is conducting Basic to Intermediate Excel (4-sessions course). The fees are $20 and $24 for members and non-members respectively. All monies go to YWCA. Those interested can contact ywca.org.sg

Online Flea Mart – APRIL 2013

shcfleamart

The guidelines and regulations for advertising on the online flea mart have been revised and updated to include more services and to widen the scope of advertisements.  Comments/queries regarding an advertisement are now permitted.  It is also hoped that advertiser inform readers if their advertised items have been sold  so that the usefulness of the online flea mart to members can be assessed.

If you have personal/’professional’ skills like dressmaking, clothes alteration,  repairing / mending/fixing…. do advertise your services.  This online flea mart site is here to serve members (not companies), so do make full use of it.   :)

Guidelines (regulations)

1. Members can advertise twice per month

2. Each advertisement must not be longer than 10 lines.

3. Members can advertise their personal services. eg, dress alteration, plumbing etc

5. Enquiries/comments  regarding the item/service advertised are permitted but NOT  chatting.

6, Company products, agent’s services are not permitted.

7. For contact purposes, provide e-mail addresses instead of telephone numbers.

8. Pictures of items advertised are limited to one per advertisement.

April 2013 – Food and Makan place review

Each month, we can have a Food and Makan place review.

foodreview

Many of us love good and good price food.

If you have been to a restaurant, cafe or food court recently, feel free to write about it here.  As this is a review category, feel to express how yummy the food is, how crispy the nuts are, and how well set up the place is.  Of course, if the place is terribble, you can express so.  But make sure you have experience the food or the place personally.

This is a new category focusing on “Food and Makan area review” has just been created.  If you are a food critic, feel free to write regularly, and share your review.  You may get a Food writer of the year award.

This is a column we can look out for venues for some of our Club gatherings.
