Announcement to EOs and ECs

Dear members,

SilverHairsClub hopes that Singapore seniors can have a Club which is easy to join, and that the Club continues to run without any subscription fee.  This has been made possible because there are some members who have the same objective in organising activities as the Club.  We have tried for years to ask our members to organise an activity for members, at least once in the lifetime membership.  However, I must say the effort has not been successful, if not a failure.

Event organisers (EOs) and Event coordinators (ECs) as well as assistants put in a lot of time, expense and energy when organising activities for members.  The situation can turn bad as there are some members who loves to complain and criticise the organisers behind the curtain.  The EOs put in a lot of effort, time and money, and they pay the same amount as fellow participants.  They do not get to enjoy the activity but instead have to run around to make sure the activity runs smoothly.  Such situations are very discouraging, and do not encourage EOs and ECs to come forward.

We will have a slight change.  All EOs who organises events and activities for members pay the same as other members.  Whatever is balance will now be left to the discretion of the EO. The EO has to make sure that his budget is correct and understands the risks of additional costs.  So, for the EOs, you set the price for the event.  If you set too high, few will attend.  If you set too low, the attendance may be too good. If the EO wishes to have a dinner for his committee, it is his decision.  Unfortunately, if there is a loss, the EO has to bear the loss. Participating members decide individually if they would like to attend the event, at the price set by the EO.

ECs, please use your discretion as the Club leaves you to make any price decisions.

I hope this will encourage EOs and ECs to come forward, as we too do not want you to have losses, after running around and doing all the work.

Would you like to volunteer to help organise activities for the Club?

SilverHairsClub is meant for you. and we like to organise activities for members, so that everybody can find friends and own interest group.

I love organising activities for members. But very often i am away on work. i like to form a permanent team to work with me on these activities, maybe for a year. The work will involve meeting members, registration work, payment, managing the venue and encouraging members to join the events. It will also let you meet more people.

If you like to join the team, please email me. you can have a choice of tasks. Take this opportunity to engage our membership and get to know more people.

This email is addressed to all fellow SilverHairsClub members via email.  If you have not received this, please check your email address and whether you have a password to enter SilverHairsClub.com

Deepavali

Someone just mentioned that Deepavali is 2 weeks away. I am ashamed that being a Singaporean, I have no Indian friend close enough to invite me to celebrate with them. We use to have an Indian kid as part of our gang in teenage years. We always look forward to his invitation at Deepavali because his mother cooks a really good Indian meal. Even up to today, we reminisce about it when we have old boys gathering. But this Indian friend did not get the message, he has since married a Chinese girl…. with all our help in the early days. He is now a Towkay and behaves more Chinese then me.

Tentatively 15 or 16 Nov – Ideas on “How we can move and mix around at a buffet restaurant?”

How can members mix around at a buffet restaurant?

It’s always a battle.  When we gather together, we all love to plong ourselves on a chair. Then, we don’t move for the next 2-3 hours.  And then members complain we should move around because we are not mixing around.  Then, we have introductions, games, and members feel they have no time to network.

I like an “All standing gathering” with a drink on the left hand and some snacks on serving tables. We keep our right hand for shaking hands. But then, we complain the legs are just not that strong. “Why no chairs?”

At Hans restaurant, some tables are long, and we don’t know who to talk with, on the right or on the left.  Some tables are small, and we squeeze and again, we don’t move.

dining in a buffet restaurant

What about a buffet restaurant?  If we go for a buffet lunch or dinner, and we sit down in tables of four, how are we going to mix and network.  At the end of the gathering, we go home knowing 3 persons, and not knowing the others.  What can we do?

SilverHairs love to make friends.  Don’t have to go into the why’s. How do we mix and network at monthly gatherings and still get to know a good number of other members?

There is always a spread of food on the serving table.  Nowadays, the restaurants serve ah la cart buffet or order as you like.  And, each of us get our own plates, bowl and fork and spoon.  Can we move ourselves, say every 30 mins?  The EO can “ting a glass” and time to move.  Those who don’t want to move can sit still; others can move.  We do it 3 times, and in 2 hours, we get to meet a new set of friends.

What do you think?  Do you have ideas?

EC event – Play about Love (Sat, 19 Oct 2013, 3pm to 4.30pm)

Dear all

The Ageless Theatre presents Faces (Phases) of Love, a play about the power of love and the search for that special someone. It comprises four short skits, including one about a lonely widow’s love for her deceased husband, and another about four mahjong buddies reminiscing about love and loss.

The venue is the Marine Parade Community Club Theatrette. Each ticket costs $15. As contact numbers of the organisers cannot be displayed here, if you wish to join a couple of us for this performance, you may transfer funds to my POSB Savings Account 159-13164-5 and I can purchase the tickets on your behalf.

What is interesting is that the Ageless Theatre comprises people aged 43 and above.

Any play enthusiasts?

Joy :)

Rehabilitation Community Hospital

I borrowed Douglas Chan threats in the cycling post and upon consideration perhaps should share the experience with my senior friends, when and if having to warded in a rehabilitation community hospital. This experience also taught me to have better knowledge of rehabilitation community hospital rather than just naively listened to doctors’ ardent recommendation. I sincerely urge everyone please reconsider seriously in choosing rehab community hospital as we had very bad experience

As a result of a fall, my mum had internal bleeding in the head and was warded in SGH on September 29 and upon discharged was transferred to Bright Vision Hospital for rehab on Friday Oct 11 and was admitted at about 1030 hr. The standard of patient care was atrocious beyond words. In fact, the neighboring patients too had loads of grievances.

On Saturday Oct 12 at about 1500 hr she had high temperature and was gasping for breath…..momentarily she appeared on the journey GOING HOME. The On-Call Doctor attended and IMMEDIATELY recommended she be transferred back to SGH. As usual we went through the A & E procedure and was warded for infection in the chest now this is in additional to the neuro situation ……….. please pray for her and the wisdom of the doctors to administer care for her recovery. Thanks

Anyway, at an appropriate time I am considering to share the experience in Bright Vision Hospital in greater details in the social media. Meantime, perhaps you may also like to contribute your comments and suggestion.

Fact of Life?

Amid the gloom and doom let’s take some times to laugh and laugh at ourselves. Share a light-hearted moment here with us and chase away all the worries.

Here is one, courtesy of Jeff Gan:

A girl brings her boyfriend home to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother tells her father, a business tycoon, to find out about the young man.  He invites the boy to join him for green tea in his study.

“So what are your plans?” the father asks the boy.
“I am a religious scholar and want to marry your daughter,” he replies.

“A scholar,” the father says. “Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in, and to which she is accustomed?”
“I will study,” the young man replies, “and God will provide for us.”

“And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?” asks the father.
“I will concentrate on my studies,” the young man replies, “God will provide for us.”

“And children?” asks the father. “How will you support children?”
“Don’t worry, sir, God will provide,” replies the boy.

The conversation proceeds like this, and each time the father questions him, the boy insists that God will provide.

Later, the mother asks, “Well, how did it go?”

The father answers, “He has no job and no plans, but the good news is that he thinks I’m God.”

Cancer – share the experience around you

Please do not copy  and paste from the internet.

Cancer is  painful and dreaded sickness. Many of us know of a friend or a relative who had suffered from cancer, undergoing treatment or has passed away bcause of cancer. Be it cancer of the lungs, colon, postrate, nose, skin, or smach, the sickness is dreaded and feared.  If treatment is treated early, the cances of a cure is high; if detected late, it’s along process of treatment, and a stress to the care-giver. It is also expensive.

What have you experienced, seen or done when you knopw of someone who has cancer. Which hospital did you go? What were your medication? Which foreign country did the person go to for treatment? What herbs or plants were tried? How much was spend? What kind of government support was available?

Share your experience so that others can learn from you. We are all getting old. Your sharing can be useful information to  other members.

Yangon trip – Looking urgently for a lady to replace.

Hi Friends,

Due to some circumstances, I am unable to go for the Yangon trip schedule from 6-10 November 2013. Number of confirmed persons going including myself is 21.

It is a twin room sharing with another lady. I have already purchased my air ticket with jetstar worth $164.60. It is transferrable and I am selling it for only $50. You would have to pay the difference between the current ticket price and the amount I purchased ($164.60) plus a transfer fee of about $50.

If you are keen on going for this trip, kindly email me at eunice.tay.bg@gmail.com for more details.

Thanks & Regards
