Ageing Gracefully

Hi Fellow SHCians,

The following Post is composed and written by Lau Eng Seng (Leon). I hope the SHC committee and Terence wouldn’t mind if I re-post for Eng Seng as suggested. Excuse me, if it is.

“Hi every one,? I am trying to create a new post to share about aging gracefully but don’t know how. So I post it in this reply. Perhaps some one can re post it in a forum where it can reach all members. Also teach me how to create new post.

7 Important Ways to Age Gracefully?:

1. Accept it, but don’t give in to it.
2. Realise that it’s never too late. As John Barrymore said, “A man is not old until regrets replace dreams.
3. Being moderate and regulated with how we treat our body is one of the smartest steps we can take.
4. Realise what you have and be grateful for it.
5. Laugh often. In George Bernard Shaw’s words, “You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.”
6. Do what you can to look your best, and then forget about it. There’s a lot more to life than how you look.
7. Find meaningful activities. Follow where your passions lie.

I hope each day finds you growing old gracefully, with health, happiness, and fulfilment.
And may all of you live long, live strong, and live happy.

I have seen how this club grown and happy for all new and old members to have now wider scope of activities. Wish I have more time myself to participate.

Will want to get to know more of all of you one day

Leon”

Travel venture

Hi All Members

Many of us travel and join tours, either package or free n easy ones. Some members are very knowledgeable about some countries as they spend years/months there.

I am wondering if Silverhairs can come up with, for a country: recommended sightseeing places to visit, shop, eat and also stay with costs, itineraries etc. With them as the contact persons and even acting, where possible as guides, I think members feel safer (especially travelling single, small group etc) as the contact person is another Silverhairs member.

Can this be handled by a travel coordinator/s in the club who is a keen traveller with time and perhaps even turn it into a business venture for himself/herself/themselves, catering to Silverhairs members?

Just an idea.

Studying conversational Thai in Singapore via Skype

study2   study1  skype

For those who wish to stay short term in Thailand and wish to learn conversational thai, i would encourage you to take up live learning, direct from thai people.  With today’s internet, you can learnt thai over Skype.  You can see the teacher.  You will use a common thai conversation book.  Two adult students can learn and speak and listen together.  You will be corrected if you pronnounce wrong.

These is a great way to learn from your own desktop or even mobile.  Right from Singapore from Central Thailand.  Good Thai schools charge about 30,000 for one-one coaching.  But I think we can get teachers for less than 50% on a twin sharing.

As part of my ongoing plan to encourage retirement in Thailand, i encourage you to start learning thai now.

I look forward to have some Singapore friends in Thailand when I retire.  Especially when you have some thai language skills.

Let me know if you wish to learn thai.  BTW, another way is to have a thai boyfriend or girlfriend or to go for slow thai karaoke.

Trip to Bangkok to look at condo properties, 3-6 March 2014

thailand1  thailandcondo2  bus3

This is not a trip to look at retirement opportunities.  This a trip to view new properties in Bangkok and Pattaya, both of which have changed dramatically over the last few years.  I cannot make Chiangmai due to my schedule, maybe early next year.  So, for whatever your reasons, if you wish to see many properties within a short time, join this trip.

James SS Tan and wife are the first to confirm the dates, and i have already booked a 9-seater coach to take us around.

Dates:
3 and 4 Mar 2014 – pattaya
5 and 6 Mar 2014 – bangkok.

Arrival and hotel:
Please book your flights and hotel to arrive bkk by Sun 2 Mar.  And departure, earliest 6 Mar.

Coach, guide, driver, tips and petrol will be shared.  Food shared or individual.  There will be no planned sightseeing or entertainment.  The trip is scenic and varied in the new Pattaya region.

So far, these names are confirmed.  If you wish to join the trip, book your tickets and you are confirmed.  If you stay outside the Sukhumvit, please try to stay near a train station, so you can get to our meeting points.

I have no plans as to which properties we will visit, but we will discuss during the next monthly gathering at Hans on the 21 Jan.  If you wish to buy the Home buyer’s guide magazine, let me know.  It’s $5.  If you wish to buy the English book on Buying properties in Thailand and i would recommend you to buy it, it’s about $50.  I shall bring it on 21 Jan.

On this trip, we shall only view 4 and 5 star properties.  Likely 1 0r 2 room apartments.  If you have a specific property, we can go too.

If you have interest to join the trip, please register here.  Only 7 seats left.  Strictly for SHC members.

Photo Walk on 28-01-2014 (Tuesday) 7.30pm. Welcoming the Year of the Horse in Chinatown

Chinatown all over the world is normally full of activities for last minute shoppers
welcoming the CNY. This coming CNY is the Year of the Horse. There are 100 horses for Year of the Horse and this coming Year 2014 is the Green Wood Horse.

This kind of atmosphere only happens once a year in Chinatown all over the world. In order to capture our, Singapore, kind of mood, atmosphere and colour, I am going down to Chinatown to see what I can capture with my camera this year.

Fellow SHCians and shutterbugs are welcome to join me. After that, if you are still “ON”, you can made a movie and post it in Youtube to share. This is a good challenging project for IT Interest Group (ITIG) members. The first 20 attending this photo walk will be the FIRST 20 to be invited to the coming Windows Movie Making (WMM) 2-sessions Course, in Leng Kee Community Centre. Date, time and venue to be confirmed at a later date (but not earlier than March 2014). For those who cannot attend the WMM lessons, the places will be given to the next on the waiting list.

After the walk, we can adjourn for supper or just a cup of coffee or tea to discuss about the coming WMM lessons.

A word of caution when walking in crowded areas. Beware of pickpockets. Never give them an opportunity to share some of your belongings or cash.  When taking pictures at night, never use “Flash” if there is other people close by you. It is impolite and may start a quarrel or a fight.

Details of the photo walk is as follows:

Date: 28-01-2014 (Tuesday)
Time: 7.30PM
Meeting Place: Chinese Temple entrance, opposite Maxwell Food Centre.
Time to Commence Walk: 7.35PM
End Point: Chinatown Point Shopping Complex (about 9.00PM)
Fee: Free (no charge)
To bring: Camera, umbrella and bottled water.

Online Flea Mart – January 2014

Happy New Year. Hope that more members would take advantage of this free advertising space in 2014. It’s fun to barter, sell or give away your things. You can also advertise your personal services or place a “looking for…” advertisement.

Here is something new.  If you have an item you want to barter trade but are not sure what you want to barter it for, you could just state/describe your item for barter on the flea mart. Anyone interested in your item can offer you their item in exchange (publicly/privately) and you can accept or reject the offer.

Just a reminder – not all advertisements are acceptable, so do read the guidelines below carefully before posting your advertisements.  Good luck.

Guidelines:

      1. Only advertisements of personal belongings/services are permitted.

2. No advertisements of company/shop products/services (directly/indirectly).

3. Two advertisements per month per member.

4. Each advertisement must not exceed 10 lines.
