Monthly walk: 11October – Fort Canning Park

Posted on behalf of Alice.

Date : Saturday, 11 October 2014
Time : 4.00 pm
Nearest MRT : Dhoby Ghaut station
Meeting Place: Park Mall, main entrance
Duration: 2 hrs
ECs : Alice Seah and Judy Lim

This month we will be walking in Fort Canning Park. Before November 1981
it was named Fort Canning Hill or “Forbidden Hill” in Malay. Since the
14th century many Singapore rulers and colonial masters have lived here,
including Sir Stamford Raffles. It was an important military base during
World War II.

Fort Canning Park is undulating and about 60 metres high. Remnants and
relics of bygone eras are around. There’s a Spice Garden, previously
Singapore’s first experimental and botanic garden. The tranquil ambience
together with diverse flora and fauna makes the walk interesting. You will
appreciate the beautiful sculptures completed by various artists.
Many cultural and recreational activities are held here.

Note: Bring water, caps, umbrella and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Our Walk Team ECs: Christina CL Chan, Charles Wee, Mary Tan, Veronica Wong,

Farewell to Daniel Ong

Daniel Ong Teck Hock had passed away at 2.45 pm today.

Daniel Ong was known to us as one of a few SHC members who dedicated his own time and finance in teaching other willing members. He spent every Saturday evening for more than a year in sharing his dancing skills and knowledge with a group of SHC friends at the Braddell Height Club House. We hereby wish to bid him farewell to a journey well travelled.

The wake will be held at Telok Blangah Tower, Street 31 Block 80-D. Funeral on Saturday.

A sad story

A sad story…

The childless widow is very rich; her bungalow compound is so large – there is a lily pond, a swimming pool and fruit trees ….  In her bungalow she has two galleries filled with paintings and precious stone ornaments – so much luxury to enjoy and she and her late husband had enjoyed it for a long time.

Alas! In her dotage she let in a wolf in sheep’s clothing and she has become senile and is completely helpless now – doesn’t know her wealth is being squandered by the wolf.

Is there a moral to this sad story? What came to my mind was “Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.”! Now for the moral – beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing?

Is he a wolf in sheep's clothing?
Is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing with a get- rich- fast idea?

SHC’s first Teresa Teng sing-alike activity, Sun 15 Feb 2015

teresa teng   Teresa Teng lived during our time. Unfortunately, she has already left us. Her heart is still with many people in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan. Her songs are varied, wide and memorable. Some of us sing just like Teresa Teng, either in Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, Japanese or English. Music makes the world go rund. Music brings people together, and I hope this program will bring Singaporeans and PRs (esp members of SHC) together.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkPPGj62n3E&sns=em

Some of you have suggested on this forum to have a Teresa Teng sing-alike activity. The idea of this event is still vague. However, I see this event as an opportunity for those who love to sing Teresa Teng’s songs on stage. If you sing like Teressa Teng, or at least close to Teresa Teng, and would like to sing for us, we would create a registration list here for you to let us know..

If you like to compere this event, please let me know here. For comperes, you may write to me via email or Whatapp.

The date of this event has been set for Sun 15 Feb 2015. Singers will have to be SHC members only. As long as your songs have been sung by Teresa Teng, the song will be accepted. Although Teresa Teng is a lady, men are encuraged to participate too.

We shall have Daniel Chan who has kindly volunteered to be the compere.

Some ideas include a “What you know about Teresa Teng” quiz.  You suggest and if we can create the idea, why not?

Learning IT Without having the Smart Device

A smart device is one equipment that has a processor and can WhatsApp, sending & receiving short messages anywhere around the world for FREE and connect to the Internet. Examples … like your smartphone, tablet, iPhone, iPad, desktop & laptop computer, etc.

There are opportunities now to learn first before buying. It goes like this – There are two libraries, Bedok and Bukit Merah, having an iPad for loan program. I don’t quite know the details, but it goes something like this – you register for an iPad loan (normally is about for 3 weeks). You have to personally go to the library to collect it. Bukit Merah has the collection day, normally on the last and first Friday of the Month – in the evening. On the day of collection, a staff or volunteer (like me) will show you how to use the iPad, create a wireless@SG account (so that you can continue to use the iPad for the rest of the 3-weeks – in the library or anywhere that provide you with the free wireless@SG free Wi-Fi network.

Three weeks is not the end of your IT learning. If you are over 50 years old, you can use any library computers in any branch, FREE for the first hour. Subsequent extension of time will be on a nominal charge.

For those that are interested in this program, you can indicate your interests in this post. I will keep you inform of happenings related to IT whenever I know it.

Happy learning …

Let’s discuss and study if we can benefit from buying in bulk

bulk1     bulk4  bulk7  C  Numerous ideas flow through the Club and it’s members. For the farsighted, members see we should look at buying in bulk. However, we should discuss and study if bulk buying works. Perhaps, the idea is just too big, as we are not a cooperative. Perhaps, we don’t have someone to lead and take us through. Perhaps, we have not seen the benefits as yet.

Honestly, I have little time to take this lead. But to hold the issue and not discuss further and not taking advantage of our group would be short-sighted and negative. Many ideas are short-term or short-lived..

If someone in our membership can coordinate and lead the discussion in depth, we may be able to start with one product or one service. If you are interested to take this challenge, let me know. We need a leader or even a coordinator.

Gathering for new members

new members3  new members1  new members2We can give this a try, a gathering for new members.  Some senior members felt that we should have a gathering for new members, for example those who have joined this year 2014.

The new members are likely not to know anybody in the Club, and sometimes are lost in the monthly gathering.  Hopefully a gathering for new members once a year would help.

In a gathering, older members tend to gather among themselves, resulting new members feeling that SHC has many cliques.  So, perhaps a gathering for new members may or can help.  Many members keep saying the Club should do something to help the new members.  Many members feel that our gatherings should have a timeslot dedicated to introducing new members.

Perhaps, we should find a place, a date and a time. Yes, venue has been proposed and confirmed as follows:

1: Venue: Hans Cafe at Upper Pickering Road, Great Eastern Building.
2. Date: Mon 22 Sept 2014.
3. Time: 1700 – 2000 hrs.
4. Participation – Free.
5. F&B – Buy from the Hans Counter.
6. When you arrive, please see Kristy Quek at table registration.

Do let us know that you will be coming.

Sep “Boom Boom” – Answer two questions correctly and a chance to win $100 NTUC vouchers

boom1  boom1  boom2

It’s easy to participate.  Simply answer two questions.  Members who have given the correct answers will have a chance to win a $100 NTUC Fairprice voucher in a lucky draw, conducted during the 1st week of Oct 2014.

  • Question 1 – SHC has two official songs.  The first song was compiled by sung by member Clara Chay, and the music composed and played by Ronald Wi. The second song is sung and compiled by Sompho Homjumroon, who is our Thai counterpart member. Q: Which province from Thailand does Sompho live in? (Only one word please).
  • Question 2 – SilverHairsClub has basically two titles for members organising events for other fellow members.  One is Event Organiser EO, and the other is Event Coordinator EC.  Let us know the name and the date of the event you have attended since the Club started.  Q: Who was the EO or EC of that event?

Details:

  1. Members who have given the correct answers will be entered into a lucky draw during the first week of Oct 2014.  Names will be announced a few days before the last day of this month on this forum.
  2. The lucky winner will need to email boomboom@SilverHairsClub.com, provide the mailing address, and the vouchers will be delivered by registered post.
  3. Each member can win only one prize per calendar year or until 31 Dec 2014.
  4. Strictly for registered members.  Membership should have the updated email address and contact tel with the Club at the time of participation.

“Boom Boom” Sep starts as soon as the questions are posted on this forum. You can only submit only one answer to each question.

Let’s have some fun.  Please encourage your SHC friends to participate.
