Sat afternoon at Jayleen Hotel, Carpenter Street ~17 Jan 2015

jayleen hotel2  jayleen hotel jayleen hotel 3  new year 2015  SilverHairsClub shall continue to look for places where members can gather together, to get to know one another.  We shall make effort to enable Singaporeans, over 45, to meet new friends.

Two members, SS James Tan and Andrew Koh showed me the Jayleen Hotel at Carpenter Street to evaluate their lunch setup and facilities.  We found the place suitable for a Saturday afternoon gathering. The lunch buffet is reasonable, and workable.   There is also a cosy living area and dining area.  Convenient is the large carpark, just outside the hotel.

The hotel has a reasonable music system.  Although loudness will be limited because of closeness to the hotel rooms, we may be able to use the music system.  We can have slow or soft ballads, and old fashion singing.  We can also have our own musician, who would have to bring along our own keyboard or guitar.  Accompanied singing is allowed, altho we have to set the sound level to 3.  10 is the loudest.  I am thinking of some old school songs to agitate our school days memories.

If we start at 12nn, we can end around 4pm.  This would be a Saturday.  We are looking at a price level of $17 per pax.

  • date: Sat 17 Jan 2015
  • place: living and dining room of Jayleen hotel.
  • time: 12nn – 4pm
  • cost:  $17 per pax (inclusive of a buffet and coffee/tea till 4pm)
  • Music and low volume singng – we can plug into the sound system if we bring a keyboard and musician.  If you can help to liaise this part of the work, it would be nice.
  • Pl pay to POSB Current Acct 951-00428-6 (ref number and date of transaction to be indicated on this blog)

Hearing Aids

Dear all

Anyone here have experience purchasing a pair of hearing aids?

Yes I am looking for one for myself as I beginning to have hearing difficulties with High pitch frequencies.  I was told its better to start using it now as it will be harder to get use to it as years goes by.

I have tried the middle range by Simens and Banform both The Receiver in Cannal and Behind The Ear type.  I m looking for a pair which give less static and not too expensive to discard in case its like the pair of bifocal glasses which I have made but did not like using it.

Appreciate your comments or share with me via my email limfreda@gmail.com

Thank you

Reflection on 2014, Ushering in 2015

Has 2014 been kind to you? Which will bring about the famous quote ” Dont ask what the country can do for you but ask what you can do for the country ?
2014 has seen the spillover of the crisis from 2013 eg like Euorpean stagnant economy, maritime dispute in South China Sea and a host of
unsolvable or yet to be solved geo-political issue. 2014 has also seen the emergence of new global and regional issues, like the Ukraine, ISIS, Ebola, MH17 and MH370. Truly will the early the year attention grabbing missing MH370 ever be found or goes down as a greatest mystery in Aviation history.
What new issues or threat 2015 will surface.
On an individual level, how have you achieve your individual goals if you have set one for 2014. I have written off the remaining months
for 2014 and plan for 2015. .

Among my various goals, financial, social and health, the good life I am having have caused me to fail my health target relative to 2013.
Total Cholestrol is high, Triglycerides, BMI are off though marginally. A Fail is still a Fail. The various dinner outing by SHC, and various other communities is not helping with my diet
The month of Dec has heavy schedule of feasting. Thus got to excuse from being discpline for a while before I abstain from ”
Eating the wrong food for the wrong reason, especially paid for or free.

Noted that it is always the same few who air their opinions. Why are people afraid to share ?
Among the various way to prevent dementia which currently have no cure is to stay socially active.
It does not matter whether your opinion reveal you to be naive , biased, shallow or wise. It is more important to be heard.
That is how you learn

One important lesson I learned in my early working career is “it is not critical to know everything before starting on something”

Among the great quotes on leadership, a recent one by a Chinese political leader is
” If is not you, then who” It remind me of my MBA class day when the USA main professor tell the administration confidentially that we students
are better off not pursuing the degree when he cannot even get a volunteer to be the class monitor for weeks. MBA is meant to produce leader, he said
I volunteered and thus organized the trip to USA campus studies and also the grand convocation ceremony in Singapore.
I am still fond of those memories.

So for those introvert which I was before, start the 2015 with a resolution to be a more extrovert personality.
Live life with conviction, confidence and compassion.

I am looking forwards to 2015 where I embark on new projects and seeing my other project reaching maturity or closing. Especially to bring my health target back on track. For those who didnt do health check or screening because retired already, make it a 2015 resolution too.

regards

Needed: Whistle-blowers

(In the light of rising numbers of unscrupulous individuals…)

The cheat, the corrupt, the evil…they are manifestations of the DARK side of human nature. It is not easy to be ‘good’ when the good ends up being victim; the vulnerable also needs protection against unscrupulous people. Justice is ‘blind’ and seems under threat by these dark forces….

Just when it seems the good in human nature is being destroyed, along comes the WHISTLE BLOWER to the rescue! The wrong doer is punished! There is HOPE for mankind!

The long arm of justice depends greatly on whistle- blowers. I hope our country enact whistle-blower protection laws soon.  Meanwhile while waiting, we can learn to blow the recorder, the harmonica, the flute… and of course the TRUMPET!  :)

SHC was down since last Thursday; it’s now back!

Dear members,

Last Thurs, SilverHairsClub.com was down, and members were not able to access the Club.  The IT engineers, the software suppliers and our hosting company believed our website had been hacked.  A few files which were key to getting the forum running were deleted.

Every week, our system and data files are automatically backup while we sleep. Over the last week, we had worked with various groups, and finally last night, the software guys restored the full database, accurate as of the last backup.  Whew!

When our system and database were down, we had broadcast to members via Whatgsapps what had happened.  However, some members did not received the announcements, and were lost as to what had happened.  Please check that you have +65 94894360 in your Whatsapp contact list.  My understanding is if we have your mobile tel number and you have ours, you should have received the Whatsapp messages from us.  Did you?

Other members resorted to Facebook to keep contact.  SilverHairsClub facebook is available at https://www.facebook.com/silverhairsclub.singapore.

And finally, some members have asked me for the contact telephone numbers of other fellow members.  The Club maintains the same policy since 2005 that contact details are confidential, and will not be released by the Club to any member. Sorry, I cannot make any exception for anybody, even if the rain fails to stop.

Please help check if anything has been lost.

My apology for the breakdown.  Normal transmission can now resume.
