Our Wish for SHC in 2014

2013 has obviously been a highly eventful year for SHC with many activities and a successful Taipei Night. Yet reading some of the blog posts during the last couple of months has been rather disappointing and we might even say downright depressing.

Since an informal committee of some form was formed around August 2013, the blog posts have revealed that one committee member has offered her resignation and evenly publicly advertised for a replacement, another committee member has been openly castigated for her comments by the Chairman ( which in all honesty we are still at a loss as to what those comments were all about).

Meanwhile we are also being entertained by the spectacle of a corporate EO throwing in the towel in the midst of organizing some event.

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, if we were outsiders wondering whether we should join the SHC, it would seem to us that the Club is on the verge of a major organizational crisis rather than a vehicle for social fellowship.

Yet we know for a fact that the SHC has been a gamechanger for many seniors and well before Facebook and other social network vehicles were founded, many people’s lives have already been enriched and even transformed through the interactions and social activities of the SHC.

Our wish for SHC in 2014 is that every member focus on the original objectives of the Club and not let personality differences (of which some must be expected to be realistic) cloud their judgement and actions. Instead of settling their differences or disagreements via the forum, perhaps a phone call, personal sms or even a quiet cup of coffee could do the trick. We believe the vast majority of members join SHC for its social objectives and would like the club to remain so. We stand to be corrected, but we don’t think that we are being presumptious to say that some potential EO’s with quality ideas are not coming forward because of concern that they are stepping into a political mine field.

Do hope that our observations are taken in the right perspective as we believe they come under the realm of constructive comment. Of course some of you may beg to differ and that is entirely natural. No offence taken, and certainly no offence meant.

Let’s bring back the old kampong spirit that once we had !

Cheers and to a brighter 2014 for SHC

  1. Hi Peggy & Arthur

This is the best news in the world today. It’s really refreshing ~ a Masterpiece and a Christmas present for many. Let me share the following WOW:

    “Rumours are carried by Haters
    Spreaded by Fools and
    Accepted by Idiots”

Let’s toast to the success of SHC!

  2. Hi Peggy and fellow members,

I like your expressing your views and I hope more members will express their views and opinion too. The Club will not remove posts or comments except in cases where the Club taboos are infringed.

SilverHairsClub is vibrant and for many members, the Club’s objective has been achieved. we cannot control nor streamline members’ thinking, and neither do we need or want to.

I doubt I will ever do anything with personal quarrels. But I will definitely do my best for the betterment of SilverHairsClub members in general.

Let me say I like your observations and comments. Merry Christmas.

  3. Wah, Arthur or Peggy or both,

You write very well man. Long time since I read such a well-crafted and simple piece. Should write more.

BTW I know about the first 2 incidents but who/which corporate EO threw in the towel? Did I miss it? Can refer?

  4. Dear Peggy,

Kudos for being open on this.

I think if we all stick to the issues at hand, many problems can be solved.
Let’s separate issues and personalities. If there is disagreement, it’s ok, we concentrate on the issues, scream and shout, release the frustrations, agree to disagree and move on.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the “heroes & heroines”who organized the various events to bring us together. It’s not easy to organize the events. Many a times, there are more complaints than thanks..

Rest assured, I admire the many who have done so much for the club members….. And to these heroes who EO or EC the events, many thanks……and I hope more will come forward to organize more events.

To the Committee members, Caroline, Dolly, Lily & GT, thanks very much for your hard work, dedication, commitment, many hours of sweat & sometimes blood, terima kasih…don’t be discouraged….. We appreciate you…and I’m sure many will join me too in thanking you all…and to Gabby who I always trouble w my SMSes to register for me, or to post for the Peranakan makan events I EO….many thanks.

    Have a great 2014

Let’s remember, if there is anything wrong, tell us in private, if anything right or good or positive, tell us in the blog…and SHC will prosper.

  5. Hi Pat
Ooohlala … Wowee, you write very well indeed. Thanks for your kind words. You are most welcome and you can rest assured that I’ll continue to provide secretarial support should you EO or EC an event again.

    Merry Christmas!

  6. Dear Peggy and Arthur,

I agree that your SHC does not give me a good impression.

I log into your website for the first time yesterday. I noticed there was a flea market and decided maybe I can get active there. I have a collection of wine accumulated over the years and thought I should put an ad to ask for interested buyers to view and quote a price. I am a banker by profession and not a wine supplier.

To my surprise I receive an email reply from the flea market coordinator rejecting my ad saying I am a supplier. She does not even have the courtesy to first verify with me whether I am indeed a supplier. When I rebutted, she was curt in replying that the onus was not on her to verify whether I am a supplier. If that is her stand, on what basis did she conclude I am a wine supplier.

You can imagine what I think of your SHC as this was my first but unpleasant experience. This will be my first and last contact with your SHC.

My time can be better spent with better company.

    Regards,

    Michael Goh

  7. Hi Michael Goh

“Dear Peggy and Arthur, I agree that your SHC does not give me a good impression.” by Michael Goh. Let me help to correct this sentence. SHC in short for Silver Hairs Club does not belong to Peggy and Arthur but an organisation founded by Mr Terence Seah.

In regards to your ad rejected by co-ordinator, I believe that was a valid reason. SHC members appointed to perform assigned tasks by Mr Terence Seah are given guidelines n they work with these gudelines.

There are always ready better company in SHC which u may have not discovered. Do join our activities more often to discover for yourself. Allow members here bit more time to get to know u. M sure it will change your 1st imrpression.

  8. Dear Michael Goh,
Pls do not allow an unpleasant incident to stop u from contacting SHC.
Like what Yew Kwong said, there is better company in SHC u have yet to discover.
Give SHC a chance. First impression doesn’t always count.
    Cheers,
    Kristy
