Roland HH Tong – Profile

Hi! I’m Roland and though I joined the SHC in 2005, I’ve not been able to participate in the activities due to clashes with my numerous other activities. However, last month I joined the "Dance Group" thinking that it was a social activity but to my surprise it turned out to be "a social dance course"! Anyway, the group of people were so pleasant and friendly that I decided to join them and even enrol a new member as well!

My resume! I’m a retired school teacher, old in age but still "young at heart"! I’m gregarious by nature and enjoy all kinds of outdoor and indoor activities. I play tennis, table tennis, badminton, billiard, (hockey, basketball and soccer in my younger days), chess, scrabble, etc. My hobbies are photography, philately and numismatics. However, tennis is my forte as I’ve represented both Malaysia and Singapore although I played State Soccer as a school boy. I love dancing although my bones are now beginning to "creak"! I had to learn dancing while studying in UK during the "ragging period" and went often to the Ballrooms there.

I’m currently busy with part-time tuition in Maths and Science to keep my brains working and to earn some income to maintain my car (It’s NOT easy maintaining a car in Singapore!)

  1. Hi Roland,

Thanks for your profile, we finally get to know you better!

Now we got ourselves another all-rounder. You have found the right place to hang out as we got all kind of activities to pamper you. If the activity is not found here, you can start one.

Understsnd you are also a tennis coach. Perhaps you should look into the possibility of starting tennis session or even coaching!

Looking forward to have a chess game with you. Btw, thanks for the scintilating email, it make me stood up!

  2. What i like best are yr parting words “….to earn some income to maintain my car….”. Should I say lucky you for having so few needs & desires in life ?

Do pls send my regards to Yan Meng and his cute cute pretty sister also my badminton partner, that uncle tim wd like to see them joining SHC as members very very soon which means drinking more similac, anlene to hasten the growing up.

Last, not least, Roland, welcome !

  3. Hi Roland,
I think I have some things in common with you. I am also a retired school teacher. Heard you are into photography. Maybe when I get to meet you we can share tips on photography. I also play billiards and used to play some tennis. Yes agree with Dan, that you could coach some of us on the finer points of tennis.
    Regards, Philip

  4. Hi Roland, nice to read your profile. By the way where are you staying. My wife is also a tuition teacher. See if we can share some common interest. I am currently in need of a photographer for the SHC December Monthly Gathering. Will you like to help out. We are having a committee meeting tomorrow night 15Nov07 at 18 Bali Lane, 6pm.
    Tks.

  5. Frankly, I am somewhat “scared’ to hear of teachers after experiencing 2 odd teachers here.
(Coincidentally, did we not read recently of 2 teachers who got themselves embroiled, quite needlessly, in a legal wrangle?)

But then, we do hv good teachers like Robert, Mary…….

Having had the opportunity of meeting up with Roland, I am convinced he isnt the scary type. Savvy? He may very well be.

Btw, Dennis, I like yr “soft reminder” and wonder how hard it is shd you decide to issue a hard reminder someday.

Whichever, the gentleman in you will certainly be very gentle with yr reminders even if they’re to the incommunicado remainders of the lot.

  6. Dennis,
I’m staying at Bedok Reservoir Rd. I used to develope, print and enlarge my own photos but have given up all that as I had “locked” myself up in the “Dark Room” for long hours. My cameras are all simple, “auto” cameras and not suitable for big functions. Yes, I’d be pleased to meet your wife to exchange ideas on “private tuition”
    Roland

  7. Tim,
There’s NO need to be “scared” of teachers just because of the two cases in the newspapers. All professions have their “black sheep” too. Have you read of doctors and lawyers in the “Headlines” lately? Anyway, I’ve been HOD of Scool Discipline and even administered public caning during my tenure in school.
However, I don’t understand the “soft reminder” referred to in your reply.
    Roland

  8. Roland, no, those 2 scary ones hailed from within this cohort, not outside.

Insofar as lawyers & doctors who made headlines, great fellas they’re. Tell me, who cd hv run away with $13m so easily ? And another one with $3m in ozland?

Happy for you that you work well with the cane which means the prisons dept hv 1 more to count on…….

The soft reminder refers to Dennishar’s reminder in his dec 3rd gathering posting.

  9. Tim,
I was scrolling down the comments on Roland HH Tong’s profile when I saw the name ‘Mary’. I presume, (hope I’m not too presumptuous) that I’m the one you are referring to. Thank you for saying that I’m a ‘good teacher’, but how did you arrive at that conclusion I wonder?
Any way, it matters not. I will just accept that as a compliment. See, you can be a nice guy if you want to.

  10. Hi Roland Tong,
I thought I would extend a welcome to a fellow teacher tonight. Actually, to be very honest, I was feeling bored and decided to read through the profiles, hehe.
Anyway, a belated welcome to SHC. Hope you have a good time here. :-)

  11. Thank you Mary for the Welcome. Tim must have been with the “Inspectorate” to rate you.Congrats!
Philip, thank you for your comments. Yes, I would like to play tennnis or billiards with you some time in the “not too distant future”!Renee too is longing to play tennis. I shall try to organise a gathering for TENNIS ENTHUSIASTS in 2008.
