An incident on the train

thank you so much  thank you so much 2

(Thanks to all ~ from Terence)

Something happened to me this Tuesday, and I like to share with members who have been looking for me, but I did not reply.

Tuesday, I had raw fish lunch with Kenneth, Robert, SS and Andrew. Raw fish was the best in Chinatown and the company was fun. We had a good chat. After lunch, we left separate ways. I took the NEL train to Hougang, but landed up at Harbourfront. Realised that I was in the wrong direction, I crossed to the other side of the platform to catch the train. I then took a seat. The time was around 2.30pm.

The next moment when I woke up, I found myself inside SGH, at the ICA unit. The time was about 7pm. I was put through numerous blood tests, regular blood pressure monitoring, ECG, urine tests, etc. This unit is the intensive care unit.

What happened was that I had a fit or seizure during the train ride, and remain unconscious until 7pm when I woke up on the hospital bed. I can imagine the commotion caused by train stoppage and ambulance transporting me from train to hospital. I am still in hospital for further monitoring. There is no need to visit me as I am fine now. Thank you for your concern.

To Tian Soo, my apology I couldn’t call you as I had no phone access in the ward.

  1. Terence, sorry to hear you have to go through this in life. Take care and have a speedy recovery. Our body is a wonderful machine and it gives us “alarms” now and then. Take this as a wakeup call and do whatever is necessary. After all, we are all in the Silverhairs Club.

  2. Oh no, what happen? Please take care! since you are alone in Singapore and if you need any assistance please let one of us know, I am sure all are ready to come forward. Have a speedy recovery, God bless, SS

  3. Terence
I know you will not ‘stood up’ nice old, handsome gentlemen like us for lunch. But we thought you may have met some young beautiful ladies and we forgave you. But we didn’t know it is so serious.
Never mine about not calling us, we more then understand. We are shocked.!!!
Take care, forget about making more money or looking for a good retirement. Just retire from the rat race and ugly jostling in life and do what is fun for you.
Someone up there just reminded you that the light can go out at anytime without warning.

  4. Terence, it is shocking to black out suddenly. Luckily there were people around to render the necessary help . Anyway glad to know you are ok now.
Have a speedy recovery and take life easy. Treasure your health and forget about earning money. Live a simple and carefree life and enjoy our golden years.
    Cheers and take care!

  5. Hi Terence
On that Tuesday five of us had a good time on Lo-Hei, other cooked dishes and enjoyed the conversation. It was rather unexpected that you fell sick.
We wish you a quick recovery and resumption of healthy life.

  6. Terence, am shocked! to read that you landed in ICU due to a blackout all of a sudden.
Relax more, take time to smell the flowers and come for our Nature walk soon! It will do you good hehe
Speedy recovery. Hope you will be up & about soon.

  7. Dear Terence
A great blessing – to recover unscathed from a potentially dangerous episode – you have received. Life is beyond our control hence, take care and beyond that leave it to blessings. I wish you more blessings of good health and longevity. :)

  8. Hi Terence,

Sorry to hear about what happened. But you should sit up and take notice. Life is fragile and short. More so for members of the SHC club, what more the Founder.
Force yourself to join SHC for the walks, cycling and other healthy activities. You will be welcomed anywhere. No need to make more mullah, you have more than a generation’s needs, so just do the simple things that everyone yearns for, travelling and socialising with friends in different cities, different cuisine, try cycling, walking, sailing, playing golf.
In the process you will have a jolly good time, and your health will improve. What more can you ask?
Chill out, Unlax and soak in the good vibes.
Get Well Soon, and we can have the lunch that we missed on that fateful day.

  9. Hi Terence,
I am glad that you have a fast recovery. Will pray for you that you will be healthy and get well pretty soon. Just like Charles we wish you a speedy full recovery and we shall have lunch together again as I also missed that lunch date on that fateful day. Cheers..

  12. Terence

I’m surprised to learn of the sad news from your today’s posting.

You’ve been saved this time but it’s better to take immediate preventive measures to avoid a re-occurrence. Mind you, health is wealth, and at our age, you must consider taking things easy, and try leading a happy stress-free life. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any help or assistance.

I pray fervently for your speedy recovery.

  13. It’s fortunate it happened when people were around you and the surrounding was safe. You could have been seriously injured had it been otherwise.

Three months back my grandson also had a fit while I was out jamming. His eyes were fixated and he was not responding in any way. My daughter, in that panic state, called 911 instead of 995, and the ambulance came. So did the police. Tests were done at the Children’s Hospital at KK and they concluded that it was a viral infection.

Your doctor would have told you what the possible causes are and maybe it’s time for you to start winding things down. Take it easy, Terence, and get well soon!

  14. Oh dear, oh dear!
I just read this post…to think that Terence just had lunch with us…and landed up in ICU!
    No, I don’t think it’s what we ate…or what we said…
Terence, I can only wish you a speedy recovery and pray that it’s nothing serious.
    Take care and best wishes!

  15. Thank you every body for the well wishes. I was discharged today, and will take a few days to rest. I do feel well, although I still cannot remember a single thing from the time the fit starts to the time i woke up 5 hours later.

I must have caused a huge commotion inside the train, and delaying many passengers. The care and treatment at SGH was excellent. But, in short, it all boiled down to high blood sugar levels. I am a diabetic; and to all diabetics in SHC, please take care to keep your sugar levels down to 6-7 consistently.

Thank you AndrewK, for noticing and telling me that I was trembling after lunch and that my thoughts were rather disorganised, although I didnt pay attention. And Tian Soo, my apology for not attending lunch as I was not conscious enough to give me a message.

My appreciation to all members for the well wishes, I will keep myself well. I look forward to having fun toward with you in the coming years.

  16. Dear Terence, just read abt your being unwell. No wifi for two days.
Hope you are feeling much better.
Take care and wishing you speedy recovery.

  17. Hi Terence, so sorry to learn that such incident happened to you at this time when you are supposed to retire and enjoy your silverhair stage with us in SHC which is your brainchild. I’m glad that you are not physically hurt due to the blackout and gained your consciousness fast. Joe and I wish you a speedy recovery and take good care of yourself. Rest more and eat well! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS!

  18. Oh dear! Terence
I just logged on and thought your post was about someone or something else. Glad you are out of danger. My dad was a diabetic and I know the seriousness of your passing out. You must take care of your blood sugar level.
    Rest and recover soon!

  19. Hi Terence,
I reproduce an article below by Dr Mark Hyman on a program that he uses for his patients to reverse diabetes:

Eat a low glycemic load, high fiber, plant-based diet of vegetables like spinach/cabbage/bitter gourd, beans, nuts, limited whole grains, fruit and lean animal protein
Vigorous exercise (fast walking, running, biking, etc.) 30 minutes 4-5 times a week and strength training 20 minutes 3 times a week
Take a good multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin D and blood sugar and insulin balancing nutrients (including chromium and alpha lipoic acid)
Remember, pre-diabetes and diabetes is not a one way street and the solution is not at the bottom of a pill bottle or the end of an insulin syringe, it is at the end of your fork and in the shoes on your feet!

There is no harm in trying the above program by this doctor. But of course in the mean time please continue to listen to your doctor and take your medication. You may also like to Google on erasing diabetes in 3 weeks & quite a number of schemes are available. I also recommend that you take plenty of water preferably alkaline water. I do invest in an alkaline water machine that cost less than $300 although there are those that cost a few thousands. Cheers and do take care..

  20. Hi Terence:
Shocking to learn that you had a blackout, warded in ICU but luckily help was at hand and you are discharged now·

Your body is giving out alarm bells do take care, take it easy and rest well.

For a start perhaps you could do brisking walking of say 20 mins in the early morning
try doing it 2/3 times in the week then progress to daily basis
It does bring down your weight, trim down fats also help in your Hba1c control.

Diabetics is not a death sentence though it is a chronic disease meaning it is a silent killer but with proper lifestyle management it can kept in control.

With strong will, determination and discipline we can all do it

  21. Hi Terence
Hope you are feeling better now.

It was a blessing that you ‘passed out’ at a place where there were people around who could help you. I could imagine the shock that fellow commuters or passersby had, at that moment when you knocked out.

Take good care and hope to see you in the pink of health real soon.
    Warmest wishes,
    May & Alex Woo

  22. Hi Terence,
Guess you forgot your insulin jap half an hour before meals.
Yes alarm bell sounded and in view of this let me know if you
need some help in the coming Mersing Trip.
You still have my contacts, ya?

  23. Hi Terence
I wish you a speedy recovery and have good health always.

I am sorry that I am unable to complete my task in the SHC because I was hospitalised for 2 months in August last year and since then, I was house-bounded.

    LeeKingSeng

  24. Hi Terence .. I am new to SHC but I know you were the one who responded to my ’email’ to join as a member. I am sorry to have read that you are not well .. and I just want to wish you Good Health .. and God’s blessings towards a full and speedy recovery.

  25. Oh dear!
Terence, thanks for sharing with us. I wish you speedy recovery. We need you here.

Some time ago, doctor told me to take diabetes medicine but I begged for a chance to see if my new diet plan works. I managed to bring down my blood sugar level by cutting down mainly on rice and sugar, walk for 40 minutes after dinner and have taiji class three times a week. I also take a special type of herbal tea (cannot disclose name here) that I bought from a popular Singapore pharmacy. Result of my blood-test three months ago indicated that blood sugar was back to normal. YEAH! No more raging thirst. Hope this is the right approach going forward…keeping fingers and toes crossed for my next follow-up visit to the doctor.

  26. Terence, my hubby and I are diabetics. He is taking Metaformin 500 mg while I am taking 850 mg. It’s not that my sugar levels is higher than his – it’s because he exercises whilst I don’t becos of my lembek left leg.
Us diabetics cannot take anything sweet and that’s a very very difficult thing to do because many foods we eat contain some form of carbohydrates which is also sugar. The temptation is also a constant battle for us….:(

I hope to go back to indoor cycling soon. Need a big shove and not a push from the ‘department’ in my brains called ‘will power’.

    Cheers and get well soon!
    Ros

    1. Thank you every body for the well wishes. I am well, up and alert, just like before.
I will make effort to take my medication regularly, keep my sugar level down and exercise.

Please take care of your health too.

  28. Hi..Terence, I hv just returned from an overseas trip. I am terribly upset to read your ordeal. Glad to know all is well now. Besides wishing you a quick return to normal, I would like, at the risk of being called “money-face”, ask you a down to earth question. How much did the hospital charge you for handling that “emergency”?

  29. Hi King Seng

Sori to hear that you’ve not been well .. I’d always look forward to your pictures on the various shc events. Hope you’re fully recovered now. Do take care.
Stay healthy and be happy. Cheers…

  30. Hello King Seng

A Very Happy New Year to You!
Wishing you Good Health, A Long & Peaceful Life and Much Happiness in the year of the Wooden Horse and in the years ahead.

Very glad to know you are well now. Keep it up and you will be out and about in no time. As age catches up, the body does take time to heal but it will certainly catch up. You are not alone in this, many are in the same boat. Chia Yu! Chia Yu!

    Keep Well

  32. Oh dear Terence….didn’t login to the forum after being away for some days. Yesterday I heard an incident on the NEL Train, so serious huh, don’t “play play” hor, do take care of your health and be cautious. May you have a speedy recovery and back to action soonest.
Here, I wish you (enjoy your Valentine Day) and all SHCians in advance, HAPPY VALENTINE….. :)

    Ah Nee

  33. Hi Karen, Helen, Gabrella, Daisy, Pat oei and fellow SHCians
Thank you for your concern and good wishes. I stay at home most of the time because I do not want to get myself injured and give my family members more trouble.
I can get giddy quite easily as, my BP falls quite sharply upon movement of my posture resulting in falls.
Now, a maid accompany me where ever I. Once I have more confidence, I will join in the club’s activities.

  34. Hi King Seng

You’re welcome. Take care and hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile, don’t worry, stay healthy and be happy. Cheers

  35. Hi King Seng,
Yes, the Club misses you very much. Please take care and I look forward to seeing you during some of our gatherings.

  36. Hi Terence
Hope you are better now but do take care. It’s good to be surrounded by friends and people. There are many ‘angels’ to give a hand.

  37. Hi DanielC and members interested in emergency hospital charges,

You asked me how much SGH charged me for the emergency handling. I had a fit, unconscious for 5 hours, and warded two nights, under intensive care. The bill arrived today, total 5,400. Govt grant was 3,700 and the balance 1,700.

Grant is subject to means testing. I have yet to go through the details. Truly, I appreciated the efficiency and care at the hospital.

I am also not aware what the NEL station had gone through to get me out of the train and the inconvencience this emergency had caused to fellow train commuters, but I can imagine the commotion.

Thank you everybody who wrote to me to express your concern. I appreciate it, although I cannot reply everybody.

    Terence Seah

  38. Hi Terence,
Shock to learn of your hospitalization. Glad that people helped you. 4 years ago I tripped and fell and broke my elbow badly. Luckily some good-hearted people came to me aid. This showed that there are kind Singaporeans out there.

But I am quite taken aback that your personal medical condition is published openly on the forum. I did not see anywhere in the forum you mentioned it to anyone. Unless I am wrong.

    1. Hi Dave,
Thank you for the concern. And, true there are good hearted people in Singapore. Guess that’s why I am alive today.

I am usually quite open about myself. Not much to hide. At the same time, I encourage members to share more about themselves; this is how we get to know one another better. Especially when we can pick up tips to improve our health and how to manage our costs as we get older.

Please feel free to open up.

      Terence Seah

  39. Hi…Terence, thanks for sharing the cost involved. Quite a sum, even with the grant. Hope your Medisave, Medishield and insurance will help. Anyway, thankfully you are back to normal. Having said that, what is the chance of a recurrence? Could it happen to any of us? Were there warning symptoms?

Shudder to think that it happens when you are on the plane….or worse – alone somewhere. What is the doctor’s advice on such situations?

  40. Dear Terence,

Glad you are alright now. Just opened up after so long , busy with work and holidaying
Is there any way to claim from your insurance for this.
Anyway health is important and it is also timing for anyone out there who may be interested in attending a health talk entitled

“Be the Heroine of Your Life, Not the victim ” which will be held on 1 March 2014 (Saturday) from 1230 hrs to 1530 hrs at Marine parade Community Club Theatrette @ Level 1 – 278 Marine Parade Road ( junction of Still Road South and Marine Parade Road ) Ticket at only $2.00 per head. Do come along and bring as many friends , you know should benefit from this talk.

    Thank you and take care
