  1. I am glad to feel our Dinner & Dance moving forward. Over the coming weeks, there will be the task of selecting the venue. It maybe difficult as Dec is our festive and holiday period. One the venue and the date has been selected, we will select the band. This is probably how we will go forward.

I am not in the music industry; but if you know of a band or a group that wishes to play for our D&D, please let me know. We will likely select two before we finally make a decision.

Everybody, please help put this event together.

  2. Hi Terence, I will register to attend when things are firmed up. Also, if u need help n dun think I am “overused”, I wld love to help in whatever way needed. I have young and old bands playing all the different genres of music. If you wan a quote, I would gladly ask them to submit a quote to u. Looking forward to the event to get all dressed up!
    Many thanks.
    Caroline

    1. Hi Caroline, thank you for the offer of help.

I don’t think you are overuse and neither will we over use you.

Can I ask you to take up the role of handling music and band? Main requirement is to be able to meet our theme: Prehistoric times.

Selecting after venue has been identified.

      1. Hi SusanT,

I have noticed your work with organising and helping with venues in SilverHairsClub and in previous functions.

Can I ask you for your help and to take up the role of selecting the venue and menu for our year end D&D.

The theme is Prehistoric times. Let’s try to find a hotel with a swimming pool. Your responsib ility would include the menu. So, we can have dinosaur meat or some else’s thigh. Please start the dream.

Members, you may offer your ideas to SusanT. Let me know your ok to take this challenge.

        1. Dear members,

I am looking for someone who likes to watch Flintstones, am familiar with the characters, the dressing, their weekend activities, their sounds, their actions and their friends and children.

          Terence Seah

  3. Caroline and everybody,

Yes, we will proceed to select a band after the venue is selected. What I am hoping thisyear-end is to hold the event at a swimming pool in a hotel. The music should be meet the theme. Once we finished discussding the theme, we find a band to fit the theme, unless the hand comes with a theme. Let’s all talk here.
Glad the mood is building up.

How about a cave men and cave women theme, during pre-historic times. The men carries a stone axe and the women wear the …. Aiyah, look at Flintstones, Wilma, Fred, ….. And the music to go along.

  4. Ok, try la. Just need to call the hotels and getting quotes shouldn’t be difficult but I don’t expect to get a good deal – first of all hotels events are not cheap, it’s the year end we’re talking about which means more cost, and we don’t get official sponsorship, And you want it at a poolside and a band.

Anyway let me source for some quotes – see if I can find a simple 2 or 3-star hotel.

Just to widen our options, would you consider a club, eg SRC, OCC? I think the cost should be within the budget, otherwise for hotels, we’re talking about no less than $100 per head. I’m sure there are some SHC members who are members of these clubs?

    1. As a guide, the dress code for the night will be prehistoric times, just like Flintstones, Wilma, Fred, Pebbles, Bang Bang, etc. Everybody, please prepare your costumes.

We shall all dance among dinosaurs.

      Terence Seah

  5. Hi folks
just sharing…recently I attended a number of club events & like to share that in SRC if its about 5/6 tables (probably ard $43 pp) as that’s about the limit it can have if there is going to be enough space to dance being a small lounge but it is a DJ spinning, no live band.
if you require a bigger hall eg a banquet hall than SGCC & CSC is ok. In TMCC we are charged $50 for a Theme D&D buffet with an excellent live band like The Locomotions.(not more than 8 tables) However I would like to suggest booking a CC hall in the east with smooth flooring as it is very spacious & much cheaper like less than $20 pp Then more people will sign up for the dinner dance!!
Just sharing my experiences with you all
PS I m not any club member.

  6. Hi Zara,

Your feedback and suggestion are appreciated. Susan Tan is in charge of selecting the venue and the menu. I hope to see a swimming pool in a hotel as the venue, and this is why I have given this difficult task to Susan. The theme has been set, and let’s all try to focus on making this theme event work.

Susan will evaluate other suggestions too. She will do the magic.

  7. Iyo Terence,

As usual, your dreams are very lofty but that’s hardly surprising – cant promise though but the best I can do is to call the hotels lor, talk to them nicely and hope they can give us what they want. What is your budget – you never tell me? So far from my contact with 2 hotels in town (walking distance of MRT), and those meeting your specs hor, the quotes I got are almost similar, with international buffet spread and a function room. One hotel doesn’t give us a poolside, just the function room and as for the other one, I’m waiting for their reply.

But brace yourself, with your tall order, dont expect the total cost to be less than $100.00 per head (pre-dinner cocktails, buffet, free flow drinks, band) Even if we just dine there the cost of an international buffet dinner is around $60+

That’s why I thought SRC may be a better alternative, but subject to any one of us who is a member who can book for us. It’s super convenient – so near City Hall mrt. Last time I was there at a party, we paid $45.00 for a dinner and I remember there were at least 10 tables. But I think there were gifts in kind or cash from kind sponsors from SHC.

Wish your dreams will come true, Cheers!

  8. Flintstone in a swimming pool seems like not the right place. why not try places like Fort Canning park, the padang etc where i saw people put up tentage? Maybe need to contact an event company for the permit and to decorate it according to the Flintstone theme?

    1. I am looking for someone who knows the Flintstones characters. Almost everybody knows The Flintstones because they came alive during our lifetime. What’s the name of the bird and the dinosaur?

I would like this person to help me develop the theme “Prehistoric Times”, so that we can set our Dinner and Dance as close as possible to The Flintstones.

      “Fred, where are you?”

      Terence Seah

    2. Hi everybody,

Let’s go a bit more crazy as we plan our year-end Dinner and Dance. The theme is “Prehistoric Times”. The reference movie is “The Flintstones”.

We shall start the ball rolling by thinking of good prizes. I shall start and you keep thinking too. I went to a dinosaur shop yesterday. And it has plenty of prehistoric creatures. I was thinking of having two medium size, fearsome dinosaurs as the 1st and 2nd prizes.

      What do you think?

      Terence Seah

      1. Now, an important person whom I am looking to join our D&D committee is someone who will ensure that whatever we do during the night, the music, the programs, the games, the dressing, the prizes, the decor, etc fits “Prehistoric Times – The Flintstones”. The person has not agreed yet to take this role, but I hope she will agree. We should know soon.

The success of our D&D will depend on all of you, and our keeping closely to the theme of our D&D.

In the meantime, Susan Tan who is in charge of identifying the venue is looking out for more hotel choices. Please contact her if you have suitable contacts in banquet, hotels and F&B. We need to book the venue quickly. Ideally, it has to be in December, on a Fri, Sat or Sun night. And should ideally have a swimming pool to use. She is working hard.

        Terence Seah

  9. Hi Susan,

I have a place in mind if you are interested. Newton area. English cottage setting, big frontage but no pool. I know the owner. Call me if you are interested.

    Eleanor

  10. Hi Eleanor,

We’re open to suggestions – but I know Terence mati-mati wants a poolside theme. He’s a tougher boss than my own leh. (okok joke joke Terence.)

Anyway we shouldnt be closed to any suitable venue but is this place near mrt – this is a very important pre-requisite.

You can email me at susan.ch.tan@gmail.com with your phone number and we can discuss from there.

    Regards,
    Susan

    1. Hi Susan and members,

As update, we have quotes and dates for Excelsior hotel, NUS Club. There is also the swimming pool at Serangoon Garden Country Club and two other hotels. The date has to be in Dec, and top priority will be given to a pool location.

Let’s try to make the decision by mid to end May. Initial costs of the venue and menu indications are about $85.

Thank you to the members who are helping to find us a venue.

** Unlike previous years D&D, there will be 20 tables of 10 persons this year. Only the names of the table leaders will be listed on this post. You may like to start forming your table of Fred Flintstone, Wilma Flintstone, daughter Pebbles, Bunny Rubble, Betty Rubble, son Bamm-Bamm Rubble, Dino, Hoppy, alien Great Gazoo and baby Puss.

      Terence Seah

  11. Hi Eleanor

Thanks for your gmail and the suggestion of the hotel you mentioned, which is at Balmoral Road. Unfortunately this is a bit too remote and not within walking distance of MRT and we’re still looking for a hotel/club with swimming pool.

    Regards,

    1. We have a number of venues, suggested by members. They include NUS Club, Amara hotel, CSC club, the Holland Club, Balmoral Hotel.

We are quite likely to select a venue soon, with a decision by mid May. The venue will have a pool.

Once the venue is selected, Caroline will go ahead to evaluate a band. Ideally, the band would have to be familiar with the theme “Prehistoric Times – The Flintstones” and can entertain us with a range of songs from the 60s and 70s.

We would also need to look at feasibility of a dancing floor. Members, please give your suggestions to Caroline Gee.

      Terence Seah

      1. Thank you to Susan Tan and the members who have assisted in looking for a place for our Annual Dinner & Dance. I appreciate your effort.

We have now decided on the Civil Service Club at Tessensohn, for its poolside. This is still subject to approval from the CSC management on the date Sat 6 Dec 2014, and we expect to hear from them before mid May.

In our discussion with CSC, we are targetting one side of the pool, with the band/music and a dancing floor on one side of the pool. The area will be decorated with lights and props to fit our theme and excitement. The dinner buffet will also be themed along “Prehistoric Times” and the restaurant owner will attempt to meet our needs.

Caroline, please proceed with band selection. Also, to identify a company to set up a dance floor, beside the pool.

Interested Band groups may approach Caroline Gee. We hope to conclude the Band selection by mid June.

Thank you everybody for your contributions.

        Terence Seah

        1. We are still waiting for the CSC management to approve the use of the pool for our D&D. I wonder what is holding them. We were to get an approval early May.

Meantime, look out for what to wear during our Prehistoric Times.

          Terence Seah

  12. Just read that “Flintstones is coming to the Big Screen”.

“The Flintstones” is going to be rebooted for cinema again, and this time instead of the live action films we’ve watched in the 90s, the future film will be an animation.

The last time the popular classic cartoon of the 1960s “The Flintstones” was made into a film, it was a 1994 live action movie. .

So far, there is no date announced for the new film to be released yet, or who would be starring as the titular characters in the film.

    Keep update.

    Terence Seah

  13. Dear Kristy,

Thank you for your offer to help. I am pleased to welcome you to the planning committee.

Yes, I wish you will enjoy the old Flintstones cartoons, be familiar with the characters, family members, community and lifestyle. Tell us about the characters, so that we know what they are, how they behave and what they wear.

    Just have fun.

    Terence Seah

  14. Dear All,

I know CSC to be a good venue. We were once members for many, many years. We had always enjoyed their facilities and amenities. CSC also provides good service.

If the food is to be catered by the in-house restaurant, it is excellent too.

    Cheers
    Kristy

  15. A little hiccup has cropped up with the location of CSC.

We can use the pool area. However, being in a residential area, CSC was concerned about the noise from dancing from 2200 hrs to 2400 hrs. Seems we need to write in somewhere for approval. Maybe the police.

If we cannot find a solution to the noise, we may have to find another location, and lose the swimming pool which is required as part of our theme.

If you have handled noise issues for entertainment before, please let me or Susan Tan know. Thank you.

    Terence Seah

  16. Dear Terence,

There is a way to handle noise issues out-door.
The catch is an international budget is needed.
I do not think we can afford that.

    Cheers
    Kristy

  17. It has taken us quite some time to apply for approval to use CSC and its swimming pool, after 10 pm, with residential surroundings. The application and approval processes are just too long. We have still not got approval yet, and we have now been passed over to the police department.

I like to thank Susan Tan for all the hard work. At this moment, I am inclined to consider other premises.

    Terence Seah

  18. Hi Terence,

The name of the dinosaur is Dino.
Still trying to find out the name of the bird.

In the 1994 movie, Elizabeth Taylor and Halle Beri played their parts very well.

Good to watch this movie to get a feel of The Flintstones.

  19. A pleasure, Kristy.
I was just being a kaypoh.

I enjoyed The Flintstones when I was little and they were one of my favourite cartoons too though I rather not say I know them very well.

Appreciate your kind thoughts but afraid I am working at the moment.

    Take good care
    Daisy

  20. We have almost finalised our venue for this year’s Annual Dinner and Dance. If there is no hiccups, we will have our event at Scarlet city.. The date is Sat 6 Dec 2014.

Holding our year end party in Dec is an expensive affair. It is also difficult to find places on a Saturday night. However, with the help of our Susan CH Tan, we have identified Scarlet City, right at AMK Hub, above AMK station.

A few of us met up at the venue, and we have in principle accepted the place. We are planning to start at 6pm, have our dinner and fun and games until 9pm. Therein, we will continue with the dance activities that are programmed by Scarlet City.

    More details later.
