Season of grief

Spring becomes the season of grief (ST 21/4) this year for S Koreans because of the ferry sinking disaster with so many still missing. The suicide of the vice principal who was rescued but found the burden of guilt unbearable – why could she not see it was not her fault? Today’s ST – all the desperate calls for help…heartrending.

Season of blossoms,

The eye sees, the mind enjoys –

This time tears falling

I came to know about the SHC from eNN (Seng Kang). My interests are varied. I write on the forum regularly to improve my writing. In my autumn years, my priority is voluntary service. Hope to meet like-minded people and help initiate a programme/project for the disabled like the hearing impaired.

  1. Hi Jassmine,

Very thoughtful of you to share your thoughts. I have been feeling very uncomfortable each time I read about the loss of lives, especially young kids, who have still a long way to go in life. Kind of helpless, as we cannot do anything to bring back these children’s lives. Yet, kind of wanting to kill the people who cause the loss of these lives. Total irresponsibility.

Life is short, but not this short.

You make me pretty uncomfortable, when you use the word “season”. Sounds repetitive, recurring and something uncontrollable.

  2. Hi Terence
The phrase “season of grief” was taken from a newspaper report of the ferry sinking tragedy. It moved me to write the verse, to capture the moment when sorrow is so sharp, it overshadows the beauty of nature.

I can understand why the word ‘season’ used in the context of grief makes you feel uncomfortable. We don’t like painful emotion to have a season. However, as a metaphor, it has the effect of emphasizing the grief.

    just explaining… :)
