  1. Hi Sally & Karen,

Do you mean courses that cover :

Subjects taught at all levels from school to university concerned with all aspects of programming and operating computers or using data and systems generated by the use of computers for business or technical developments.

Information technology (I.T.) means all computerized and auxiliary automated information handling, including systems design and analysis, conversion of data, computer programming, information storage and retrieval, voice, video, data communications, requisite systems controls, and simulation. …

Perhap you can consult Yew Kwong in this aspect.

    Happy Learning.

  2. Hi Sally, Karen n Patrick

A lorry load of inquiries hd oredi poured in. At tis moment myself n volunteers in the team are waiting 2 secure appropriate venues 2 conduct workshops. Alternatively, we can do them on home bases involving a gp of 4 wif 2 PCs/lappies or mix n bb internet access. So far we hd recd any response 4 home base.

If u do come across any place are equip wif PCs n bb internet access n imptly, dun cost much, pls let us know.

  3. Hi Dennis

I did ask (this question was posted at my last IT thread) but still get no response until 2dy. Alternatively providing e eqpt wld be a better choice saving me all e hassles in looking 4 another venue. If I still cant get any by end of May 08, I will kick off wif doing it at home starting fr members living ard my area.

  4. Hi Yew Kwong,

At the present moments scorebot is unable to provide individual Station or PC. When we are able to do so then I will let you know. Currently if you can have your classes and students are prepare to bring their own notebook then I am able to assist you for the venue. Lets move forward to see if there is any classes that does not strictly needs one to one pc.

  5. Dear YK,

If you wish to rent PCs, this can be arranged. But is this necessary?

Internet guru Alvin Phang (famous for his own AtomicBlogging tool) is currently conducting his workshops in Scorebot. His courses run for close to $2,000. Although he can well afford to rent PCs for his students, he does not need PCs for his students. He has good reasons for this.

Students should always have their own personal tool with their own custom tools, private accounts and secured database. It is not good for students to run without their own PC. They should use the course to customise and learn the whole set of tools once and for all. Take advantage of the experts whilst they are at hand.

Once they step out of the room, students should be up on-line and running. They should not be wondering how to setup a system at home when they finish the course. Neither students or guru should waste more time than necessary trying to re-configure, re-setup and re-customise home systems. Alvin provides quality hands-on mentorship to a large alumni of Web Warriors and Webtrepreneurs. In his presentation, Alvin shows a recent bank statement with about $10K per month taken from internet sales. Everbody should be gunning the job at hand and to cut to the chase. Not trying to find the start button.

You are rendering a great community service for the SHC and it is greatly appreciated. Don’t let something like the issues of PCs hold you back. If you are teaching someone to fish, you don’t want to spend a lifetime teaching him how to tie hook to line. You want to catch fish.

You can be proud if your students can succeed to make something useful and lucrative of the knowledge that you pass on to them. It is also better for the student. It makes good sense.

    In my humble opinion.

  6. What KT says make sense:

Any student who is serious and mature will have his own basic tools.

One who needs the plate, silver and other’s hand to feed with basic, is just too pampered and lacks of self motivation.

    : ))

  7. @#6, KT ah KT, you ok or not?

Surely, you know it’s cumbersome to lug a computer around – hardware, monitor & all? Many, esp when he/she is a beginner/learner, dont own the convenience of a laptop/notebook.

While you do hv pots, woks, sesame oil & pans at home, surely you dont take them with you to a cooking class?

    Or you do !

  8. Hi,
I believed that most Silverhairs members will hv pc at home shared by their children and I also believed that having a laptop is definitely not a good investment 4 them especially for those already retired or semi-retired. Even those wrkg full time, if their wrk scope dun call for a laptop, why shd they buy 1, they can use office desktop, rite?

Hence, asking them 2 bring their own tools to any loc/venue is simply not a solution at all.

Andrew, is reli not an issue of silver plate/spoons la.. is reli a topic of newgen versus lkk lor.. LKK (like me) will always prefer not to carry anything if possible.

Finally, everyone in SHC knew that YK and his group of volunteers are giving free IT lessons hence the cost imposed on these members are reli vry minimal lor.. Kind of hard 2 imagine renting pc is more expensive the course itself.. will any1 b still interested? …??? Dolly

  9. Hi Dolly and Ann

Visit our National Library or any library, you will be amazed with the number of lap tops around at every floor.

At National Library, there are even on-line Bloomberg monitors.

    Nimbleness is good.

Ann: be careful of a roving eye for a “quick tohu” ; never play poker with one – will be sorry. ????,????.

  10. Hi Andrew

I m aware of the amenities tat our modern libraries provide. But again, we cant conduct lessons just like tat.

Anyway, from now till the time is ripe n rite, Scorebot is out of my preferred venue. A gd move is 2 do it at members’ home.

  11. Dear Yew Kwong at #18

I am not mentioning about Libraries’ amenities, I refer to the people who use our libraries. Most of them bring along their own lap tops, including silver, golden and platinum citizens besides the many many young ones.

We are how think : For as he thinks in heart, so is he.

I am impressed with the agility and nimbleness of body, mind and spirit of those who visit and use our modern libraries for reading, research and investing.

Millions yearly are spent to keep our only human (mind) resources useful in Singapore.

    Cheers,

  12. Andrew @ #11

    Huh?

I didn’t use the word “Common sense” at all.

It is hard to define common sense even amongst humans. Let’s talk about intelligence.

It is true. Computers does have artifical intelligence (AI). The AI can not only have an uncanny resembalance to a sentinel person, it often exceeds human intelligence.

Our living room ATM is a case in point. If you are trading on the other end, even experts will find it very hard to figure out that there isn’t a really good trader on the other side. In fact, the ATM system is doing much more than directed by the sum total of its subprograms. It is making its own “decisions” independent of the programmer. This is the result of what we call “swarm intelligence”.

Take a simple analogy. When there is honey, bees start to gather. When there is a really good trade, all sub-programs start to zoom in onto the same position in different ways. Their collective action creates a synergistic effect much greater than the sum total of their individual actions. This “vote-to-act”system creates an intelligent robot that behaves very similar to a human acting out many decisions in a complex environment.

  13. Back to the IT classes.

Serious Webtrepreneur and Web Warrior treat their laptops and notebooks as an extension to their minds. The issue of carrying a portable does not really come into question. It is like wearing spectacles or dentures.

When students really want just an appreciation, they prefer to be in an lecture like environment. If you observe carefully, these students typically will sit back, listen and do very little hands-on spontaneously.

It is more efficient and beneficial then to have two sessions for two different audiences.

    (1) An appreciation lecture giving a better overview will have much more information delivered and in a much faster pace.

    (2) A hands-on workshop for participant with their own PCs. Lots of time will be taken to customise and install routines; and learn to run them. It is very useful for people with their own PCs because they will have a tuned turnkey tool at the end of the session. But it will be very slow and boring for people who is really in for the information, overview and general knowledge.

  14. Wong,
Well said. Count me in a group who own a laptop. Maybe I can share it with someone who don’t own one during the session. I have a laptop bought last year, preloaded with Window Vista and am maneuvering around it. The IT session can be an eye opener and I hope I can maximise full usage of this new window platform. I hope to learn a little about diagnosting a virus and loading of spyware etc, and maybe learning how to break into my teenage daughter’s blog code. Ha Ha Ha!

  15. Hi SHCian, why not we count how many will be prepare to share there notebook for any IT class at scorebot and we can start one.

My webpage DennisH above. I can share how to create one like my.

  16. By the way , why is scorebot . What subject will u cover for this it course , hope it is a beginner course (haha) I wanted to learn how to load mp3 song, copy disc and digital camera loading as well, is these subj in the course.

  17. Hi Karen Thio,

I am with scorebot and can arrange for the facilities with wide LCD and internet access. I am sharing what I have done by myself through trail and error creating a Webpage.

Just click “DennisH” above on the first line and you can see the Webpage. You will notice that I am using a FREE 1GB DriveHQ Hosting to design and store my image files.

  18. Dennis

I am ignorent of computer in a way and find that the SHC members are very active. I missed out alot of all these activities.

Hope this computer courses a successful one

    Karen

  19. Hi Yew Kwong,

Would you be available next week? I like to fix an appointment for you to meet up with Michael Tan of Kovan Community centre.

The centre is planning to increase the users for its new computer club. Guess, here no computers are required when conducted IT courses.

    Terence Seah

  20. Hi All,

I think a one-on-one basis is the best way to arrange for the above without much fuss and hassle also could be tailored made to suit each individual.

I could be reached @9684-2286 for any SHC member interested in a crash course in IT.

    Cheers,
    KC

  21. Hi KC

What are thinking of teaching – topics ?

We can use either National Library or a nearby cafe in Kg Glam/Arab Street, or even Hans at the Great Eastern building?

    Cheers,

  22. Hi, Yew Kwong:

Could you let me know the set up you actually need, i.e. besides PCs, you will need the appropriate OS and software to be loaded, etc. I think I may be able to help.
