  1. Hi Dennis, Jassmine,

I have checked with the web developer, and they dont have an answer as to why the comments appear, even though the post is protected. Guess, we will live without the feature for the moment.

Meantime, the thread on this Post still continues for interested participants.

  2. Hi Terence

The farm idea raised somewhere in the forum is very interesting. Term “Land banking” was used. I hope it’s a real farm. I like the idea of being a week-end farmer. lol.

  3. JassmineT, I see you are a lady with plenty of dreams. You associate with flea marts, books, literature, culture and now weekend farmer. As you participate in this thread, I shall keep you in mind as we develop SHC Corporate.

Some 6 mths ago at a monthly gathering, an idea came up during a discussion between Chris Leow and myself. She suggested an idea of an entity which was able to fund one of the activities of SilverHairsClub. At that time, I did not pursue the idea because I did not like the idea of SHC getting into commercial projects because SHC is an unregistered and social entity. We have since decided that SHC shall continue in its current format.

During earlier discussions on Blue Helmet, we could not move too far due to the absence of a corporate identity. I think the idea of SHC Corporate makes sense.

Some of you have felt strongly that SHC lacks resources and is rather disorganised. Privately, I disagree, as I always favour some form of disorganisation vs well-planned events to the finest details. The current and fun way is via our Event Organisers, who usually make their own decisions.

Over the next three months, we shall discuss this idea or these ideas on this thread. You are welcome to participate, and I intend to be active on this thread.

  4. Terence, SHC do have wide range of activities. Can we try to put to vote which is the prefered one that we should start with and may be some indication of personal participation.

Hope to get the ball rolling.

  5. Hi everybody,

Here’s what I have in mind, after the kelong trip. It is likely that I will structure SHC Corporate as maybe “SHC Corporate Pte Ltd”. The objective of SHC Corporate Pte Ltd would be to provide social enterprise services, which SilverHairsClub.com and SilverHairsClub are currently not able to do so legally and financially. SHC Corporate would focus broadly on Seniors in Singapore, with more emphasis on SilverHairsClub.

I shall stop here for now, while other details are being worked out. Feel free to toss your ideas.

  6. If SHC were to be corporatised, the whole flotilla of compliances by a incorporated company will apply. There will be a board of directors, a registered office and, with so many members converted to shareholders, you’ll have to incorporate it as a public company requiring, inter alia, annual audit & ACRA filings.

However, if it’s to be a private exempt company (which dispenses with impt filing requirements & opening its books) with only a handful of members as shareholders, then the question will be “who and why only these memebers are qualified as shareholders?” Will there be benefits the company gets to reap at the expense of the Silverhairs Club persona?

I am cynical but it can be a new beginning that augurs for the demise of the Club. If SHC, free and easy as it is, has to be tweaked, I’d rather it be registered as a Club.

  7. Hi Tim, and others interested in SHC Corporate,

I am now looking at the possibility of setting up SHC Corporate as incorporated company. Yes, ACRA requirements will have to be met. And, defintely, would not take the direction of a private exempt company.

SHC Corporate would cater to requirements and needs of Seniors in general and SHC members.

Let me think aloud. SilverHairsClub would continue to run as it currently is, and would be owned by SHC Corporate. After a year or two, it is likely we could have a succession plan, should something happen to me. The running of SilverHairsClub would continue as documented in earlier threads.

Now, SHC Corporate would run as a social enterprise, but not as a charity organisation. It would run as a business, and compete with other similar business organisations. SHC Corporate would not impose membership fees on SilverHairsClub.

SHC Corporate would run its own services, with objectives targetting Seniors in general, and SHC members should not be obligated to use its services.

Tim, I am not going to pursue the direction of a society/club, as we have discussed this topic on this forum, without interests from members. Ok, no more thinking aloud.

    Let’s hear other comments.

  8. Although feedback on this topic is minimal, it is important I move ahead to develop SHC Corporate. In my mind, SHC Corporate would be a business entity, providing services to the seniors community in general, while keeping |SilverHairsClub as what it is today.

As in any business, there is always risk; and investment in SHC Corporate would not be encouraged or guaranteed. As such, SHCians members would not participate in the first two years of operation. We would slowly develop the business. On reaching 55, it is likely I shall return to Thailand, and spend most of my time there with my family.

To ensure continuity of the SilverHairsClub, and maintain its current format, SHC Corporate would then likely be open to interested SHCians to manage. Hopefully, by then, we would have develop a sustainable business.

    Have fun and good luck.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome, by 30 June 2008.
