Saturday Nite Fever!! – 30 Aug 2008

Hi, anyone watched last nite’s American Idol? It was so interesting :-) And whn Donna Sommer came on to sing Let’s Dance..

I kept thinking one D&D per year is just no enough!!!…So let’s do a survey..(l copy cat the Malacca drivein:-)). How abt another D&D nite? Let’s say end Sep (6 mths away frm the Mar 08 D&D). This one to be casual. Everyone in jeans (pants, bermudas, shorts, skirts) anything JEANnie….with lots of silver accessories :-)))

A funky nite for the young at heart. Ribs, chicken and salad for food, to down with lots of beer and ice lemon tea!!!. On a Saturday nite pls. Tentative prog…Getting to know fellow members better and makan – 1 hr. Have some games, haha time – 1 hr. Dance Dance Dance – 3 hrs!!!!

Then fare thee well. If yes, where do we hold this Saturday nite FEVER?? think this is the main problem…getting a place!!! Oh btw, if this goes through, I will not b the EO :-))) but no problem to help/assist/support lah. EOs do the "dirty" work and do not enjoy that much, they worry more:-)).

Here again, I salute all EOs, the past ones, the present ones and the future ones!!! So folks..don’t be shy, speak your mind (I copy cat Terence :-))…Doable? Boleh jadi? Ker ee mah? Aa sai boh?

  1. Wei June,
Sin Sept08 is around ‘zhong chiu jie’ den, it mit as well hv a function with tis theme. I tot Ron Wie is supp to plan a function during dat time mah.. not meh..

  2. June

I think instead of suggesting Jeans, Bermuda – u can actually suggest – 70 attire, Hawalli style or other theme of dress code. I once attended a part with 70 dress code – Is very interesting and it make me think back of oldie as well.

Maybe everyone Lady should style the 70 hairstyle like ” Hairspray”

Just a little suggestion. Dolly U be the “O Qi Nicer” la. WIth u around – there is always “fun”

  3. Hi JuneL,

I see you getting braver. A Saturday night fever. Fix a date, and worry about the details later. I am tempted to put this event in my own diary.

Take the lead, and be the EO.

A little request. Make sure the VJ plays “Saturday night fever”, my favourite song. We do have a number of John Travolta” and “Olivia Newton John” around.

New members, pick up your courage, and join this activity. It’s a great way to meet new friends.

  5. Hi Janet,
I am sure that CSC shd hv a limit of many paxs a member can sign in rite? If this is d case, might not b suitable for SHC event unless June is just thinking of targeted headcount only, den np. Moreover, in tis case, it will not b solely a SHC event as I believed tis is a CSC Social Dance party for members and guests. Maybe a little bit info will b much beta for June 2 plan lor…

Whatever it is, June, u definitely got out supp in this la… Cheers… Dolly

  6. Hi Janet

As regards to the Dance function at CSC on 12th July, kindly include Alice Lai, Eileen n Jonathan Ong, Janet Heng, n her hubby Liu n myself. Thanks.

    RonLai

  7. hehe…was reading my post again..and nearly died….:-)) I meant blue denim jeans lah…denim pants, denim bermudas, denims shorts, denim skirts..anything denim!!!! aiyoh this is worse than write the motobike!!! :-)))). My suggestion for the Blue Denim D & D is for as many SHC members as possible to participate….50? 100?…the more the merrier -)))). Similar to our Ann D&D. The good band, the food, the place makes CSC a splendid place. But not hving the place all to ourselves is not so splendid.
And pls pls let me not be the EO!…Let me be the assistant, Let me be the dreamer…(hehe I am humming the song, Oliver Newton John’s Let me there..:-))))..EO’s very terok….eg Doug had to recci Tg P befor the bike write :-)) Poor Dolly was like swallowing her food at the Pines D&D to be ready for the next segment, and think she must be thinking hard how to entertain the members…:-))..Frankly all I wanted is to dance and jostle with lots of members :-))) and most imptly on a Saturday nite!!!! And my husband’s place in all this fun, is to come drive me home :-))) Btw, I always marvel at those nite creatures (sorry ah) who let their hair down on weeknites!! And don tell me to sleep x hours more on the nite before so that I can stay awake x hours more the nite after :-)))

  8. Dear JuneL, Ron and gang

Aileen and I will join folks at the CSC after our tennis fellowship (5-7pm) for the Saturday Night Fever on 12 July, 8pm.

    We are also CSC members.

    Cheers,

  9. Hello…this not CSC dance nite, this is SHC Saturday nite fever to be held 1 Sat nite in September, ie if it takes off :-)). I don’t know what tomorrow brings and I wanna dance with many many SHC members, so all help to make this happen OK?. Main prob is the place. Those who hve ideas/recommendations, pls post your comments. Thanks.

  10. Hi Ron/Janet

Look like you be the EO for the interim Saturday Night Fever on 12 July, OK ?

Then wait for June’s 1st Sat in September next.

For Aileen and myself, can go to CSC either for singing at 3Bars or dancing at the Recr complex.

  11. Hi JuneL, AndrewK & JanetL

Since “Come Sepetember” (remember the song?) is still far away, we’ll do one on 12th July at CSC.

CSC allow members to bring in 6 guests at any one time on 12th July’s “Buffet n Dance ” party.

Presently we have 3 couples, namely: Ron n Alice Lai, Jonathan n Eileen Ong and Liu n Janet Heng, already signed in by JanetL, the maximum allowed by the club. Those who want to join in may have to be signed in by other SHCians (CSC members).

“Come September” we’ll look forward to another dance party by JuneL’s “SATURDAY NITE FEVER”.

May I suggest this time we can try organising at the Singapore Swimming Club’s Hall, it can take in at least 150 pax and with the one-man’s band of JeffreyG, if he can oblige, it will be a rollicking affair.

    RonLai

  12. Aiyoh, the logging in is killing me!!! :-))
Hi RonLai (the “hern ker ai” Jap guy at D&D?)…i checked out S’poreSwimmingC…catered food a@$32/$36/$40 per pax b4 GST and rental of room is $1,500 (b4 GST). Room rental is for 4 hrs. Any extension is $250 (b4 GST) per hour….Think it is too expensive to hold our casual dine and dance there.:-)))) I called up Aranda Country club too. Room provided free if we take their food @ $50 per pax (ex GST) for min 60 pax. So this is out too..:-(. I asked Susan Chang this morning if we could use the place SHC had for the Talentime…(I didn’t attend)…She thinks that place is too small and wont be appropriate for Sat nite fever…So that’s another down.
Btw, RonWei, whn and where u doing the ‘zhong chiu jie’ thingy? We cld combine both events..do the moon dance..:-)))

  13. Dear June

The hern ke ai Japanese guy is Robert Quek.

I know what you are going through. I called up almost twenty places to get quotes for the D&D. Its very expensive nowadays.

Keep trying and I am sure you will find the right place with the right price.

  14. Grrr..gotto log in again!!
I am terrible for names…ok .Robert Quek (aka ‘hka’ Jap, better half Kristy). Ron Lai (better half Alice)..ahh he is the slim tan guy I saw at tanamera court!!!
Hi fellow members…pls throw suggestions of places to me…and I will do the calling to find out costs. I very “homey” type so don’t know much abt social clubs, function halls etc.

  15. Hi Ron Lat at # 18

Then Robert and I can sign in 12 more people, that will make up to 23 heads

Believe within SHCisnas, there are some CSC members too.

  16. Hi June Lim,

Agreed lah cost is a big problem. Sure you can organise another Sat Night Fever during the Mid Autumn Mooncake Weekend, as suggested. Since if the Chalet is booked for 2 Nights, we can use one night for Line DAnce too or whatever you want to organise.

The Chalet can be an open house for all, but on the other hand have to be fair to those who are willing to pay and enjoy it as a retreat too, so maybe limit to about 30 persons per night per Chalet unless we can booked more Chalets. At around $10 per person it should be ablet ocver the cost of each chalet per night, and you have the chalet for the whole day too.
I guess it is too early to start planning but when the time comes maybe more people will start getting the idea that have a few chalets for a weekend retreat for SHC members is about right then.
Hope Jeff Gan may volunteer to perform for one night and maybe Edwin or someone else may perform another night to create our own Music lounge for the night while we have a barbecue, or potluck, and mooncakes too

Right now I need a Safra golf member to help us book the chalets, is there anyone one amongst us who is a member willing to do the booking (it is half the rate for Safra Resort member ) ? Why Safra Chalet, the chalet are big and faciities ideal for company weekend function, esp now tha SHC is quite a size as any SMC ?

One really better way to get to know SHC members is really to have a weekend retreat. Then Ron Koh , Yew Kwong and Roland can really conduct a really good leeson in Origami, IT or Tennis over the weekend. If not, some members can just have a good fun weekend, lazing about, cycing, eating, dancing over the weekend, not having to waste time driving over to Msia and waste time on the journey and at the causeway.
Sept 12 to 14 is the school holidays and it is super peak period, a Safra member can book at $300 plus , public $400 plus while a resort member at $200 plus.

  17. Hi June,

    Refer #13

Sori haf made a mistake..shld address 2 JanetL rgdg the CSC nite on July 12.

Anyway i m 2 late (refer 2 #18 – Ron Lai “Presently we have 3 couples, namely: Ron n Alice Lai, Jonathan n Eileen Ong and Liu n Janet Heng, already signed in by JanetL, the maximum allowed by the club. Those who want to join in may have to be signed in by other SHCians (CSC members).”

Hi u 3 couples, enjoy urselves.

    Cheers
    DennisW

  18. Hi June,
If we r just looking at nite fever, den perhaps u can consider Oxford Htl lor.. I remembered dat during our last 2 talentimes, d cost was reasonable but of cos, sound system not so good for Talentime lor but I think it shd b ok for dancing fever.

  19. Hi Ronald Wie…I was trying to search for your post on zhong chiu jie but can’t find it..Posted in which month pls?…Where is the SAFRA chalet that u were referring to pls?
Let’s either combine or do diff nites in Sep ….bec your suggestion sounds interesting and I don’t wnat to miss it :-))
Last nite, I was thinking of the SAFRA chalet bungalow that my bro in law booked for me couple of decades back…(“chum see”, these few days keep thinking of a place for Sat nite fever!!! :-))), Think that may be a good place for our fever nite. The chalets are terrace houses, 2 storey bulidings facing the sea. Just couple of steps down the bungalow is the pavement where u can barbecue and several steps away is the sea. In Changi, not too far from the Meridian Changi hotel. Think they are only for the SAFRA officers, the captiains and above. Not too sure if the chalets are still around :-))
My bro in law is now retired, so not too sure if he has the “connection” to get hold of one of those bungalows. Will contact my bro in law tonite to get details. Will call Oxford hotel to find out too….
Other fellow members who hve suggestions on other venues, pls let me know. Thanks much.
Aside: I was so crazy that last nite, I told myself, if no suitable place, then hve it in my home :-))) iamgine dancing 13 storeys up a block in Sembawang :-))..I am on quite good terms with my neighbours, so noise till 12 pm wld not be a problem..but the non plus point is there will hve to be a limit to no. of people who can squeese into my home…:-)))..Seow or not :-)))

  20. Hi JuneL

To my thinking, if costwise is the “culprit”, then the only possible venue will have to be “THE BEGONIA” Room at the SERANGOON GARDEN COUNTRY CLUB, reasonably priced.

    RonLai

  21. Hi Dennis at 26

We are likely to let down our hairs at CSC on 12 July evening, likely to sing after the tennis fellowship.

If you & wife and another 4 SHCians want to go to CSC Saturday (dance) Fever, just let us know.

We can sign 6 of you in at the Recr Complex.

    Cheers,

  22. Re at #30

Am told that the Saturday Fever at CSC is a very popular event, so please advise asap to secure tickets by end of May.

Dancing hall’s size is more than two badminton courts and also usually have a lot of seasoned dancers including instructors. So really hot hot for good dancers and those who want to improve.

  23. Hi Ron Lai

We might consider dancing if you and Alice can assist us in revising 3 dances : cha cha, rock and roll and b/r waltz.

    7 weeks to go, yes?

  24. Dear AndrewK

As the saying goes: “A GOOD DANCER MAY NOT BE A GOOD TEACHER”…………..

Teaching dancing require a special skill, because dancing is an ART.

The love of dancing goes well to those without two left feet. He or she can easily adapt to the steps, if he or she have had learning experience in the past, under good teachers like Melvin and Alvin of S.L. Studio, especially
in the case of yourself and sweet Eileen, under their tutelage in the past, would have NO PROBLEM, if both of you would just take a refresh course, for the three dances as mentioned by you, such as CHA CHA CHA, ROCK N
    ROLL n BALLROOM WALTZ.

Learning from friends, on the ON OFF affairs would lead you nowhere (from my past experience), picking up from the dance floor may just help you a little, so my sincere advice is to take proper lessons, from GOOD TEACHERS, it will definitely lead you a long long way.

As you indicated # 33, the 7 weeks, a long way to go still,
a refresh course or rather a CRASH course is a good start.

    C U n Eileen on the 12th July.

    RonLai

  25. Dear Ron Lai

Aileen and I thank you for your advisory.

Look forward to rejuvenated passion once more.

See you at CSC on 12 July evening.

  26. Hi Ronald Wie…hve u set date for the zhong chiu jie? Can we combine?
Hve checked out the Oxford Hotel…whn I entered the coffee house (where the Talentime was held), I thot it would make the perfect place for the dance nite. Place is cosy. Just need to take away the tables. Line the chairs along hte wall and outside the coffeehouse. James from the hotel (who was not in yesterday) is supposed to get back to me on cost etc.
Went across to Queens Hotel…there is a function room but it is too big for our purpose, also no dance floor.
Went to Bencoolen Hotel too…but no function room there.
Next to B Hotel is Hotel 81…think that is a big NO NO :-)))
The SAF chalet at Changi…my bro in law says he can apply but subjected to balloting. So not 100% sure we will get the place.
Thanks for the Begonia Room suggestion (Serangoon Garden CC). I will go check that out this weekend.
Btw we need to settle on a date. Which Sat in Sep is good?..the 1st Sat, the 2nd Sat or 3rd Sat pls.

  28. Hi June Lim,

The date is tentatively 12 to 14 Sept, to be confirm by Terence. SEconldy the venue is not at Changi Village but at the Golf Resort which has a bigger bungalow with a bigger hall ideal for dancing and with balconies outside for barbecuing and also for listening to music.

Check the website for the rates, offpeak is from $150 a night to $450 per night for super peak. Also Safra Golf members can book at a cheaper rates, if you can find one amongst us.

You can book it anytime and have a small party, not only Saturday night but overnight party too.
You can book or enquire thru this website.

    http://www.esrcc.com.sg/golf/index.html

  29. Hi June

This is confusing leh… how come got 2 events in 1 post wan…the CSC nite & your Sat. nite fever… hmmm… which one must I support? Both ?..ha.ha..

    Ah Nee/Lina,
The Chinese Swimming Club is just walking distance from my sis’s place so I might want to go there. Besides I can ask her to sign me in if I am going… Ah Nee, Lina & Rene, you can join me since 1 member can sign 4-6 guests, right? But 1st of all, I need to check with her if she is free or not. Janet, if ok, we will join you guys there.

Sorrie JuneL, just borrowing this thread…dont be mad ya?
I will support you when the time comes. Oh, but no promise though since the date is so far away. I will try to make myself free that time/date.

    Thanks,

    Suzhang

  30. June,

Your Saturday Nite Fever, anything JEANnie….with lots of silver accessories :-))) I like it leh, so casual, now I can wear my Mango Jean which I bought 2 years ago during Great Singapore Sale. But hor, where & when is it huh?

Suzhang, CSC… anytime can go lah. Just set a date and if we are free, we go lor. :)

    Ah Nee

  31. June@38 – At SGCC it is called the “Heleconia Room”.
If you need viewing, give me a call and
I can bring you around as this place is open to
members only. We had our 1st SHC D&D at this place
in 2006. Did you not attend….. Molly

  32. Hi Molly, I attended only the 2nd D&D. Last evening, I went to recci the Serangoon Country Club. Yes, the recep told me no Begonia Room but there is a Heliconia Room :-)). So went to the room to take a peek. Anyway the person in charge will get back to me on the costs.

Dear fellow members out there…the date is fixed 30 Aug, Sat nite!!!
pls mark that on your scheduler..:-) And yours truly is the EO…(sob sob sob I wan my mommy!!! :-)))… as no one wants to hands up for the EO post. Let’s make this happen OK. Once I hve all the costs details in, will announce the place and cost per pax. Tentatively the prog wld be..makan, dance and some games in between to give those legs a breather :-))

Hi Robert Quek..the ker ai Jap guy…are u the one who got all at the Talentime to do the chicken dance?….(I wasn’t at the Telentime). If yes, pls could u come do the chicken dance on Fever nite too?

  33. Hi all…this is just to let u know that this Saturday Nite fever is still in the works!!..My Post is buried by so many other posts.:-)Will put up new post in mid Jun for members to register once I confirm the venue and cost. Pls mark your scheduler, 30 Aug.

  34. Hi all, everything’s finalised…I will put up fresh post for registration for Saturday nite fever by today.
    The plan:
    1)open up for registration.
2)by mid Jul, hope to get the min no. of pax…If can’t get min no. then it is auld lang syne for this one :-)))…If can get min no. then move on to ….
    3)confirm with Oxford
4)appoint a small committee to help me with the event….I need:
-a)a funny girl (laughter is still needed amid the dancing)
-b)a pair of hands to help spruce up the place for the mood
-c)a IT guy to tell me which is better…to bring CDs to put into player in Oxford or better to download the songs from the CDs onto nb and plug it into the sound system in Oxford etc etc…I hve lots of hot music CDs (my son’s) but think I may need more CDs on our “kind” of music :-))
That’s it for now. Watch for for my post pls, thanks. LET’s DANCE….(hum to the Donna Sommer’s song)…the nite away…
