Lunar New Year falls on Thur/Fri 19/20 Feb 2015. Let’s have feedback on what we shall have for a CNY event

The Lunar New Year comes late next year.  But we have 2 weeks to enjoy this festive season.  We are now a few weeks away.  Let’s do some brainstorm on a big occasion to celebrate Chinese New Year.  Keep the ideas broad and Chinese,  No bad ideas.  Think of an event for at least 100 members.  Dont brush aside other members’ ideas and suggestions.

In the past, we had lunches, Dim Sum sets, buffet at a Jurong condo, ….   The more points you raise, the wider the ideas.  A Chingay show, a house party with majong and prata, an overnight somewhere, an overseas trip, a room at MBS.  Keep going.

Let’s use Dec 2014 to do some brainstorm work.  Be the first to raise your hand.

  1. Dear Terence,
Might be an idea to have a simple loh hei gathering with a Teresa Teng singing contest segment as part of the program, since there are not many who signed up for the contest and difficult to justify a separate occasion for the competition

  2. Peggy,

Your idea is possible. From previous years, experience, finding a venue on a Sat, Sun or a workable day is usually the issue, coupled with price considerations.

For the moment, I think we should find a place. If the Teresa Teng event has enough numbers, we shall consider then. We can also consult Daniel Chan, we will be our MC for this event.

As for place, I remembered Kenneth Tan recommended many moons ago a restaurant near HongLim. A very Chinese looking place. We went for trial Makan but never tried the venue.

On the higher end, we had recommendations to use Grand Shanghai at Corpthone. Personally, on a expensive side for a Club event.

We had red star restaurant at Henderson. It was dim sum and we had 10 dishes for less than $20. We had angpow. Exchange and orange exchange too.

Keep the ideas flowing. Perhaps, an open house with mahjong and roti prata at someone’s house. We pay for the cost and cleanup. I guess we 20-25 per pax for 100 pax.

Thinking aloud, we book a suite, have mahjong, order Malay or Indian Food. Have beer. Anybody know a place to book for 100 pax?

Or maybe like Kristy suggested, an overnight place. Kristy. What is on your mind? A beach side? Don’t know, but I think most members wants to look nice, red and hot.

Think think think, bring young kids to our party to collect angpow. The idea is the fun.
Even, our grannies or grand pas. Let’s hear your feedback. Something must be workable.

Ah Nee, do u still have that beautiful function room at the swimming pool at Kovan? And KennethT, how about your beautiful function room too, we can test an investment venue. If workable, we would pick up the costs.

Maybe a function area would be great. We have a buffet, near MRT. Not too much restrictions. Somebody who has a big house, also can.

Keep suggestions coming. Treat this as our event.

  4. Terence, I have sung several times for charity events at the Yan Palace, the one you mentioned at Hong Lim Park. The food is quite good and they have a small stage with reasonably good (subjective) karaoke sound system. I think it will make a nice venue for the get together together with the Teresa Teng singing competition. Location is very near to the MRT station. My two cents worth.

    Cheers
    Carly

  5. Thank you Caroline.

Would you know if the Yan Palace allows us to sing on stage during a lunch time booking? If the place permits, without an overly high charge, we may use this venue.

I only know the setting is nice and appropriate to the season, although we are likely to be entertaining the other diners if we were there.

    What do you think DanielC?

  6. Hi Terence
I have been told that the karaoke system in the main hall can be used by customers who have booked the place exclusively. They have smaller rooms with karaoke facility but its too costly. There is a minimum charge from $56 per pax, depending on the menu chosen. Will probably have to give this place a miss.

  7. Alamak! My name mentioned so many times!

Terence, you and all SHCs are welcome to my condo function room/so. If it’s a weekday there should be no problem booking it, but I’m afraid weekends and public holidays are booked out! Call me if you want to pursue this idea.

I’m a cheapo guy…although I did suggest Yan Palace: good dim sum but expensive desserts and…now, expensive karaoke venue. This idea/venue was mooted for the Gala Dinner I think.

Some older members may recall that we had a “loh hei” dinner at the Outram Park temporary hawker centre. We can reprise this experience at Chinatown (Kreta Ayer) food centre anytime now till Chinese New Year! I’m game for a small group to have “yee sang” with delicious Cantonese/Hong Kong food at super reasonable prices… Any takers?

Oh yes, you’re also welcome to use my condo barbecue and swimming pool…again, weekends and public hols are out! Also bad weather nowadays!

  8. Hey. Thank you, Kenneth. I like to do gatherings at condos. Big space in and out of the function room. Still remember the one at Parc Oasis some 3 years ago. It was fun. Time flies.
Would like to see what (stage) facilities your place offers.
Shall do a site survey cum feasibility study after Christmas. Boleh?

  9. Hi Daniel

Sorry to disappoint you…but my condo function room does not have a stage…it is only a room capable of holding a small party of up to 40 people. You are welcome to view the place however, and see how SHC can make use of the facility.

  10. Wow…..Terence, you surely won’t forget this beautiful function room and swimming pool at Kovan Melody. Two events were held there, Swimming Day and BBQ nite. I still remembered you and many more enjoyed kicking happily in the pool. Well, that’s 4 or 5 yrs ago, hahaha……now the pool has moved to a different location at Kovan Regency and will be ready only in 2016……..meanwhile, we can enjoy Kenneth’s Minton swimming pool. Thanks Kenneth for offering this cosy and nice place for gathering.

  11. Hi Terence,
I understand that you are looking for some venues for some activities. You are welcome to make use of the Function Room at Palm Gardens (see attached photo), at the junction of Choa Chu Kang Way and Chao Chu Kang Ave.1 in front of Keat Hong LRT Station (2 LRT stations from CCK MRT).
The function room is beside the pool, so swimming and Jacuzzi are possible. Management only allows max of 50 guests. There are 29 visitor parking lots (first come first served); can also park outside along the landed houses. You can have activities like buffets, gatherings, karaoke, movies, parties, etc but so sorry no majong. Only room, tables, chairs and air-con are provided. For weekends and eves of holidays, better book one month in advance. There are 2 time slots for booking everyday: 1-5pm and 6-10pm. A small fee and deposit are required during booking. There are also 2 barbecue pits but only one can be booked at any one time with max 30 guests. There is also a bowling alley (with 2 lanes) and a Pool Table that can be booked at a small fee.
Let me know if you are keen on these facilities at vincentkplong@gmail.com.

Merry X’mas & A Happy New Year to you and all SHC members
