This Sat, Thais begin a long water festival holiday called Songkran. It is the Thai New Year. During the festival, adults pour water on the palm or back of their parents, as a mark of respect, while children and adults make the event fun by splashing water on the bodies of one another. It’s fun and thousands of foreigners congregate in Thailand to celebrate this occasion. Many thais start the holiday this Sat and ends next Sun, almost 9 days.

I am in Bangkok, and will drive to Surat Thani, which is in Southern Thailand, and will take me 10 hrs, with a number of stops. For those who went to Samui with me for the Full Moon party, you may remember we stopped at Surath Thani.

Starting from Sat, I shall write about my trip, put up some pictures and hope you will enjoy them. I hope you will join me sometime.

I hope to encourage members to share their holidays too. Keep in touch.

  1. Wah Terence!

You beat me to it! I will be making almost the same trip but at the end of this month!
How are you stopping at Surat…and returning to Bangkok? Do you fly back or to some other destination?
I’m looking forward to your pictures and report with great anticipation!

  2. Hi Kenneth,

I will be driving from Bkk to Surathani via ChaAm, HuaHin, Petchburi, following the coastline. I shall be together with Sompho and family.

One of our target place is South Thailand “Guilin”. Will return Wed with an overnight at Petchburi. The trip has many beautiful and relaxing sights”. Looking forward to this Sat. Maybe we can meet.

  3. Well Terence… We can meet… but only in Singapore…at the monthly meeting!

I’ll be pleased to learn which sights to see along this Eastern route. We planned this trip…coming down south from Bangkok, through Petchaburi, Hua Hin, but turning west from Chumphon, then Khao Lak and ending in Phuket.

Will wait for your pictures and report!

  4. It is Thai Songkran this week. Together with Sompho and damily, we left Bangkok for Surathani his hometown. We began the drive at 3am. There was little traffice, and by 6am, we had driven past large salt farms, Petchburi, ChaAm and Hin. We took the coastal road, along the Gulf of Thailand. This towns make great stops, if we are retired and had plenty of time.

By 9am, we reach Prachup Kirikan, a beatiful area of beaches, casuarina trees and hilly region. This is also where Myanmar and Thailand run parallel to one another. The Adaman sea and the Gulf of Thailand are the closest here.

Had Southern Thailand Muslim food for breakfast. We moved on and reached Surat Thani when we had home cooked dinner. Slept well after a tired day. Pictures will come up soon.

Hope to have some of you join the trip next year.
