Introducing a weekend of adventure at Khao Yai National Park, 10-12 Oct 2015

khaoyai nat parkmap      khao-yai-national-park

Some of you have joined me at Khao Yai National Park. This will be the first event dedicated to SilverHairsClub members and children, aged 26 and above. We intend to hold this exciting event in Oct, from a Friday to a Sunday.

Khao Yai is located some 1.5-2 hours north-east of the old Donmuang airport. It is ideally suitable for young adults, beautiful waterfalls in October, a good place to look out in its natural habitats for wild elephants, deers, junglefowls, Asian bears, and bird watching.

I plan to stay in tents, which we can buy on our own or rent from the National Park. We will arrange a cook to handle our dinners and breakfast. Ideally suited for members and their adult children.

For ourselves, there are grape plantations, where we can enjoy fresh grapes, juices, red and white wines. Also a good local beef steak.

There is adventure land, with horse riding, ATVS, rides. Our adult kids will enjoy time together, and they will find btheir own time to mingle with one another and get to know one another better. Car racing, and other trills which we used to enjoy when we were young. Bring your sons and daughters along. You have to make the effort.

Quietly located, Khao Yai air is fresh, the morning is cool and a good time to spend with family. Important our children can mix with other children.

Golf. Loves, we can play as the famous “Forest hill” golf course, where many tee offs start from a height. It’s easy.

I intend to make it easy, as we will have helpers to make our trip fun, enjoyable and meaningful.

This trip is for you and your adult children. Our plan is to arrive at the airport, and head straight for Khao Yai, 2 hours away.

Confirmed date:  Meet at DonMuang airport at 10am morning and 10am at Survanabhumi airport (if a group is formed) on Sat 10 Oct and we arrive back at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct at about 5pm.  Others can proceed to Bangkok for other activities.

More details will come up. Express your interest here.

  1. Hi Terence,

Your post is like a guessing game. As I read the post, I was wondering where is this national park. I guess it is Thailand as is the place you are most familiar. I have to google to confirm. I am interested and are available for the weekend from 9-11 Oct. Thanks for the initiative.

    Regards,
    Moon

  2. Dear Terence,

Sound interesting. Something different from Bangkok city life adventure.
. Like to get in touch with nature more. Count me in.

    Leon

  3. Thank you everybody. I have decided to use the weekend of 9-10 October 2015 for our trip to Khao Yai, National Park of Thailand.

We should arrive on fri morning, and leave for Bkk Donmuang airport on Sunday. Some of you may want to stay in Bkk for an extend trip.

I like to encourage you to bring your young adult children. It will be fun, sporty for them, and for the children to get to know one another. We will have separate activities.

    Terence Seah

  4. For golfers, we can have a game of golf at the nearby ST James Golf Course, formerly called Forest Hill. Let’s do a group. Handicap not required.

And for shoppers, we can send you to nearby Factory outlets, one of the biggest on the way to the Northeast from Bangkok.

And for young adults, it’s adventure land. They will love it.

    Terence Seah

  5. Hi Terence,

  7. Hi Terence,
This trip sound interesting & something different from the usual tour. Please count me in and I would be sharing room with Leon. Thank you for organising. Cheers..

  8. For the purpose of your planning, I have confirmed the following:
    Confirmed date:
Meet at DonMuang airport on morning of Sat 10 Oct and we arrive back at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct at about 5pm. Others can proceed to Bangkok for other activities.

In the next few days, I shall advise the meeting time on Sat 10 Oct. It is likely to be the first morning airasia or scoot flight or tiger. Forget which one.

** Please invite your adult family members to join.

    Terence Seah

  9. In Khao Yai National Park, there are a number of adventure land, ideal for our young adult children. They will enjoy a swing of a time together. Even a whole day. This is likely the one we will organise for them to enjoy.

http://bonanzakhaoyai.weebly.com/adventure.html. They will feel young and even young among themselves. Most of us may not be able to participate. Hope to keep you excited. These places are thai playground. Tours won’t bring you there.

Once again you’re leading a large group to Thailand… I take my hat off to you!

But once again it’s going to be a quick in-and-out…three days to do everything… I think it’s a bit rushed to really appreciate the beauty and quiet of the place. And Bangkok is only the transit point… I’d have liked two nights in the park followed by two nights in Bangkok at the least. But I guess some people have to work…

Have you read the recent reviews of Bonanza? It seems to have deteriorated and become rundown..?

However, once again, I salute you!

  11. Hi Kenneth,

I am in Thailand almost every month because I have to work to earn a living, even though I have retired.

So, if I can find the time, I would like to share with fellow SHC members. Usually, once I find a date, and I lock it, I cannot change it because there are other schedules. I go everywhere in Thailand for many years; and I think most Singaporeans miss the opportunity to see outside Bangkok. The tour agencies will take travellers to certain places; that’s about it. Where I go, there are plenty of cockcroaches, so this stops those with weak hearts from joining me. Unless it is for business, I do not use 5-star hotels. You and I have a lot in common. We share similar interests.

As for Bonanza adverture world, we are not staying there. In fact, most of us will sleep in tents. We are there to enjoy the rides, the scenary, the hilarious activities. In particular, for this trip, I am hoping parents with young adults can join us. This is for our kids to mingle together.

Not many have eaten thai beef. Well, on this trip, we will get to experience thai beef What’s the difference between thai cows and australian cows. Thai cows eat grass.

    Terence Seah

  12. Hi GraceN,

We are sure to be on the look out to find you a tent-mate. Of course, if we cannot find, you can be sure I will find you a deer or an elephant or a wild rabbit.

Do ask your adult children to join us. This activity is idea for young adults too.

    Terence Seah

  13. A recap on the trip to Khao Yai National Park, Thailand. Pickup point is Donmuang airport on Sat morning 10 Oct 2015. Arr at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct, 6pm. Likely to drop you at the Morchit BTS Train station, fo rthose going to extend their stay in Bangkok.

    Terence Seah

  14. Hi Terence

My apologies… don’t think I can join you all during this trip cos I’ll be travelling to US later that week. Nonetheless, enjoy yourselves and have FUN!

    Cheerio……….

  15. Heehee Grace

You wrote that you wanted a partner: “a lady, of course!???”
    I recommend a “ladyboy”… there’s plenty in Thailand!

  16. Hi Terrance

Would be keen to join. Tentative. Do advice on which budget air n flight details nearer the date. Have not board flight alone so be good for us to meet at Changi Airport and board together. Your take.

  17. Hi Terrace
Thanks for organizing. Albert and I are interested to go. We would also like to extend 2-3days in bangkok. If anyone else interested to extend we can work out the itinerary.

    Thanks again

  18. Hi Terrace
You have mentioned in your comment that the participants will sleep in tents (self-bring or rent from the Park). Yesterday someone told me in Oct, it will be a rainy season (with heavy rain) over there. I have not camping for a very long time, but in my memory, the one of the most unwanted happening for camping is raining.

Is there any facilities in the Park that make it suitable for camping even in the heavy rain? If no, what can we do when heavy rain besides camping. Please enlighten me, thanks.

  19. Hi AndrewY,

Yes, for this activity, we will be staying in Tents. I am planning for the tents to be erected by a few thai helpers.

I guess we have to figure out what to do if it rains. There is always a possibility of rain, day or night.

Honestly, I don’t have a solution now. My thinking is if it rains, we just have to sleep on, inside the tent.

May I know who tells you there is heavy rain in Khao Yai in Oct?

    Terence Seah

  20. One of my friend (not SHC member) told me to care for the heavy rain in Khao Yai when he knew I will visit there on Oct.

You said “if it rains, we just have to sleep on, inside the tent”.

When there is heavy rain, what I am worry is not the rain from the sky, but the water from the ground. I have not camping for a very long time (a few 10 years), I don’t know what is the design of the tent of nowadays. In my younger day, there is no facilities of the tent to prevent the water from the ground during heavy rain. In a few occasions of my younger day camping with my friends, all of us and our belonging become wet after the rain. In those days, we are young and feeling fun for it, but now……???

  21. Hi AndrewY,

I thot over what you wrote; and tell myself maybe I should share the weather possiilities in Oct at Khao Yai.

    The seasons
There are 3 seasons in Khao Yai. The winter season starting from November to February, the dry hot season March – April, and the wet months from May till October.

The winter season is pleasant due to the average day temperatures in the low twenties, though, the night temperatures can drop to 10 degrees Celsius. In general, sunny days, clear blue skies.

As you would see, Oct is the tail end of the raining season. Beautiful waterfalls, and beginning of winter. Very green at this time of the year.

Our tents will be on highland. There wont be floods. You can choose to pitch your tent on a slope. I guess we can be quite flexible. If we arrive at the airport, and it rains cats and dogs the few nights before our coming, then those who would not want to take the risk, can check into some of the small resorts hotels nearby.

    Terence Seah

  22. Tickets to/fro Thailand/Sin is available at Scoot. However, I intend to book to go on evening of Friday (9.10.15) and leaving Thailand on Monday evening (12.10.15). From what I see, its about $133, or thereabout. I am having problem booking from the internet because the calendar for dob not working…. very frustrating.

  23. Hi Ann,
    Please hold buying the tickets.
While the dates have been decided in plan, I will confirm it, based on a reasonable size participation.
It is likely if 4 or 8 are confirmed as a group, that will be the date. This is the ideal number to hire a van.

    Terence Seah

  24. Hi fellow travellers to Khao Yai,

I like to confirm you can book your tickets, on the following schedule, as prices are very good now.

Sin/Bkk – You must arrive Don Muang Airport on Sat 10 Oct 2015 on or before 10am. Coach will pick us up at about 10.30am. You may arrive the night before ie Fri, as flights on Scoot are very good, as observed by Ann Giri.

Bkk/Sin – You will arrive at the airport on Monday 12 Oct 2015, 5pm for you to catch a flight to singapore. You may stay longer as you wish in Bangkok.

Of course, you can book anytime later, if you are not sure yet. We are still early.

    Terence Seah

  25. Hi Ann,

Bangkok has two airports – the old one which is Don Muang airport; and the new one which is Suvanabhumi airport.

For this Khao yai trip, we will meet at Don Muang airport. Pick up is at Don Muang airport. For those who arrive at the new Suvanabhumi airport, you have to make your way to the old Don Muang airport. If you come in 4, a taxi is ideal.

    Terence Seah

  26. Hi Ann
It looks like you’ll have to stay close to the airport, and, because of the possible traffic jams into and out of the city, you’d better stay near Don Meueng.
So, you need a place just to crash for the night, have an early wake-up call and walk to the terminal: I suggest DMK Donmuang Airport Hostel at $16-20, although there are many other options; just Search travel sites like Agoda, Hotels.com, etc.

  27. Yup Kenneth, thanks for the info. Intended to stay the night nearby, but wondering if the hotels there provide transfer service, or do I have to get to/fro hotel by myself. Also, is 4km walking distance…. don’t know how good the paths are over there

  28. Yes, unfortunately I’m not familiar with hotels near the airport; you best search some websites and get a location within walking distance and to your budget. Some sites will give you the distance of the hotel to the airport and a map to verify the location.

  29. The Agoda site has this hostel only less than a kilometer from the airport…
The review looks safe and convenient walk to the terminal; check it out.

  30. For travellers to the Khao Yai trip,

If you come on Fri, the day before our Sat departure, you dont have to book the hotels so earlier. there must be about one million hotels that you can stay.

Bangkok is not an excellent place to walk, even 1km. Besides the air, there are potholes every where. Of course, outside bangkok, it is a lot nicer to walk.

For those coming on Fri, consider staying together in Bangkok, and have a good dinner or late night out before our weekend trip. Take a taxi, it is unlikely you will get an airport transport; although your hotel may arrange for you, for a fee. A taxi trip from airport to a city hotel will cost about 300 baht, inclusive of tolls and airport charge. There is no convenient MRT line.

There are about two million hotels in Bangkok. Pick one from Agoda. if you arrive on Fri night, you can stay anywhere. It is easier in the morning. If you arrive on Fri, stay near any of the eating, shopping centres. Favourites among Sngaporeans are the Pratunam and Siliom area. Plenty to find within your budget.

I am likely to arrive on Sat early morning.

    Terence Seah

  31. Yes, for those coming into Bangkok earlier on Friday it is great idea to stay in the city and pay for a good hotel room and taxi early on Saturday to the airport.

But for those who have booked a later flight it does not make sense to travel into the city, pay for just sleeping and then take a taxi back the next morning. And I do not think that walk to the hostel is so taxing or hazardous.

This is why I advocate staying two days in Bangkok before making that trip to Khao Yai; you’d have plenty of time to enjoy the city without the hassle of rushing to the airport.

  32. I have finished my recce of the place that we will stay at Khao Yai National Resort, IN Sat 10 Oct to OUT 12 Oct 2015.

10 Oct – Tents (for two) at the private grounds of Klong Sai Resort, Khao Yai. We will arrange for helpers to fix up our tentsbefore our overnight stay on Sat. Charge will be on a per tent (2 pax basis).

11 Oct – Stay in bungalows, amidst sprawling grounds at Khao Yai. This is one of the most desired holiday playgrounds for Thais during weekends and school holidays. Charge will be on a per room basis.

We will get very special rates, as we are going as a group.

    Please view the website http://www.klongsairesort.com/home.php.

We are tryng to work out the cost. Once I announce the cost, special rates will be applicable to those who are in the registration list. Those who join later, are likely to have to pay higher rates, due to the holidays and weekends.

    Ok for now.

    Terence Seah

  33. The tentative plan for the Khao trip is as follows:

Sat 10 Oct 1000 hr – Tour guides will pick us up at DonMuang airport. Tour guides are a legal requirement to protect the tourism industry. We plan to have one guide per van, besides a driver.

1300 hr – 2 hours drive, followed by Lunch in Khao Yai, followed by Khao Yao sights. Winery and waterfal. This is almost the end of the raining season, so weather is dry; but plenty of greens and beautiful waterfalls.

Sun 11 October 0500 hrs – for earlyrisers to catch the first rays of sunlight. May need to drive out. Enjoy the mountain scenary.

1200 hrs – Visit to ChokChai farm, the largest diary farm in Thailand. We can have the famous ChokChai steak here.

1600 hr – leave for Don Muang airport. For those going to Bangkok, we can arrange for you to go to Bangkok (selected spots only).

We will update this itinery from time to time.

    Terence Seah

  34. Hi Terence
I just checked Scoot air and there is no morning flights that will arrive before 10am on Saturday. However I found that Jet Star has. You are sure that Scoot air has morning flights on sat? Thanks for your advice.

  35. Hi Maggie,

You are right, there are no flights on flyscoot on a Sat for SIN/Bkk Donmuang.

What I suggest is to take Tiger Sin/Bkk (Suvarnabhumi) to arr 8.XX am on Sat 10 Oct. I will arrange one pickup at this time. You will arrive earlier at Khao Yai, and will be met by Sompho. You can enjoy the place earlier.

We will try to make it to 9 per van.

For those who wish to take this route, please write a comment here. Whatsapp not valid. Haha.

    Terence Seah

  36. re the Khao Yai trip, starting Sat 10 Oct 2015, some of you may arrive late at night, and want a place to stay. You may be coming from Don Muang or Suvarnabhumi airport.

I can open up an apartment on Fri 9 Oct. Will get some cushy mattress, and you can sleep here for one night. The place is airconditioned and can sleep 8 pax. There are plenty of cockcoaches, so not suitable for those who are afraid of these insects.

So, if your ticket is confirmed to arrive on Fri 9 Oct, you can stay here. There is a small charge of $10 per person. I think tickets Sin/Bkk are cheaper on Fri. So, this is one option.

    Terence Seah

  37. Jokes aside, is your offer for real? I have already got my tickets, and will arrive evening of Friday. I am actively looking at the hotel near the airport as I think its not worth getting into a bad experience at the start of this trip. Was scouting for Amari Hotel (4-star) as it is only a direct bridge across from the airport. Best price so far, inclusive of tax and gst is $82. Still looking around for better offer as can still afford to wait, but it is the hotel I am thinking of.

Let me know how far is your offered lodging. Price is attractive, but still need to know how inconvenient it would be to get there.

  38. Hi Ann,
As long as air tickets are bought, participants can stay at my apartment, only a soft mattress, aircon, bath are available. Nothing else. This is only available for Fri night, $10.

My apartment is very convenient, as taxi is available at the entrance of the tollway. Use Nana BTS station.

    Terence Seah

  39. For members coming to the Khao Yai trip, do see this schedule:

    On Scoot or Tiger:
    Departing Flight – TR 2102
    Departs: 6:30:00AM, Sat, Oct 10, 2015 – Singapore
    Arrives: 8:00:00AM, Sat, Oct 10, 2015 – Bangkok – Suvarnabhumi

If I read on this forum of a group arriving at 8.00 am, I shall arrange a pickup at Suvarnabhumi at 9am. You will arrive at Khao Yai by lunch time.

Ideally, you can come on Fri night and stay overnight at my place. We can go for a late night drink at Nana Entertainment, 5 mins from my place. Ladies must be accompanied. It is the hottest place at night.

The flight tickets are cheaper on Friday night, as of now.

    Terence Seah

  40. Hi Terence

Sincere apologies. My co now has an offsite meeting being planned for week of Oct 12 and I am involved in logistics unable to go now. Really sorry about it.
Thanks and have fun all !!

  41. The trip to Khao Yai is on. The room rates are being negotiated with the resort owner. We will now need to estimate the number of participants. We are trying to negotiate a due date for early birds, as the resort needs to confirm the dates too. The date is set for 15 Aug. Early birds will get a 10% off the rate per pax. I should be able to announce on early next week.

The cost for the transport from airport to Khao Yai,van, driver, sightseeing, fuel, guides will be shared.

On Saturday morning, 10 Oct, the van will pick you up from my apartment at 7am, and we shall beginning our holiday at 7am.

For those who have paid $110 for accommodation, for the first night (camping) and 2nd night (resort), we shall all stay together.

I have asked Sompho to be our tour guide. I think he will be joined by his family. There will also be other helpers.

The raining season is off, and we should have a nice cool and dry drip. We are expecting nice greens and valleys.

  52. Terence, I will need accommodation on the night of arrival. Please advise place and how to get there.

My flight details: Friday 9/10/15 TZ302, Sin/Bk (DM), 1735/1905hr. I am coming alone, non-Thai speaking and not familiar with Bangkok. Please help.

  53. Hi Ann, Thomas, Charles,

The Khao Yai trip has confirmed 4 persons.

When you arrive at the new airport Suvarnabhumi, there are two options to get to my place.

    1. Take a public taxi. It is fast, approx 25-40 mins, costs about 400 baht (including toll plus 50 baht airport fee). Right to my apartment. This option is cheaper if you come as a pair, and has luggages.

    2. Take the airport rail link. The station is just below suvarrnabhumi airport. Take the train to Phayathai station, the last stop of the rail link. Less than 100 Baht.

Then connect to the BTS rail link, and go to Nana station. Less than 50 Baht. You would have to walk 5-10 mins to get to my apartment.

    This is fast and cheaper.

    3. You can buy a local SIM card at the airport for about 99 baht, which includes some tel and internet.

Hi Moon Wong, Helen Wong-Pow, Leon Lau, Gabriella, Irene Poh, Marg Tian, Shirleen, Lina Tan, Ronald Lam, Steven Chan, Bobby Bok, Grace, Daisy, Lily, Sockie, please let me know if you have changed your mind.

  54. Hey Terence, I am coming into the old airport Don Maeung, I think. How to get to your place from there, and how long will it take? I will get lost if the direction is from the new airport…..

  55. Hi Ann,

Coming from Don Muang airport is the fast way into Bangkok. There is one way and that is to take a taxi. It costs about 250 baht plus 50 baht airport fee.

Tell the public taxi queue, you want to go to Sukhumvit Soi 6. There is a 7-Eleven. I shall send you a whatsapp msg a day before your departure the exact address. You will arr at 2000 – 2030 hrs at my place. I will be coming from India, so we can meet there. Dont forget to bring towel and tooth paste. We will have fun. Sompho will be our tour guide.

  57. hi Terence
sorry for the late reply, as we have not been logging in for awhile,
with regrets we all are unable to go for the trip.
Nevertheless, thanks for organising. have a fun trip.

  58. You may have read in the news that Bangkok has flooding the last few days and this will last until Tuesdays. This is coming to the end of the raining season. We will be going outside Bangkok to Khao Yai, which is under the Unesco National Heritage. I hope the rain will be over by next tuesday, and the entire environment will be green, fresh air and the waterfalls will be beautiful.

    We will have fun.

  59. Hi Terence,

Sorry for the late reply as I was overseas and did not check the latest postings on this trip. I only realised that the trip is on when I received a message from Ann Giri. As it is, I will not be able to join. Thanks for organising.

  60. Moon, the Khao Yai fun starts today. the travellers are already here. We will overnight in Bangnkok at my place, and leave tomorrow at 7pm. By 10am, we will have reached our destinations. Weather is cool, slight wet, but will have full of greens. Waterfalls are beautiful. Tomorrow we will explore the top of the mountain ranges, and the night safari before coming down for rest at our camp site.

    Next time then.

  61. Our first stop for local thai coffee is an Amazon cafer, along the highway to Khao Yai, 1.5 hrs from Bangkok.

    Here is apicture.
