  1. Hi Dan,

Well done. Finally, you get to start one of your few luvs. Will definitely join you when avaible.

Meantime, how big is this kopitiam? What’s available there? Am thinking of coming to masak.

    Terence Seah

  2. Chess is too elementary for me. But if 1 day it does progress from “s” to “t” and “best” it by squeezing in “r” and “a”, then that will be the time SHC matures as one big family to play the ultimate game together.

In that game, you can be a slow player like Jass, or a keen learner like Agnes or a blitzer like Dan or a biter like tim ah liu……………….

  3. Ha ha my most worthy opponent – finally it has arrived. No need to meet u once a month to have a crack at the board.

The last time (at Kovan) I lost becoz it was getting late and I thought the light would go OFF anytime (heehee…good excuse?) With a rich cuppa from Kopitiam, I m sure I can beat you.

And I hope your Chess Cafe hosts Chinese, as well as Int’l Chess. See u soon.

  4. Haha, so finally we hv International Chess, Chinese Chess but in cosmopolitan Spore, it’s not complete without Indian Chess which is played on a piece of roti prata invented by A*Staarr according to rules all salah so whoever gets addicted will soon go gila, mistaking Rama as his papa and Bira as his mama…………….

  5. Hi Agnes,

    Okay, will do some coaching.

Jassmine, yes you can bring your chess set. Yhis is quite unusual that the gals are interested to play chess!

Quite possible that when two ladies play chess, a lot of interest will be generated. I expected those Ah pek will come by and google and wanting to sign up as SHC member!

Daniel Chan, that not a good excuse. Don’t forget I was half drunk and needed Boon Liang to send me home! Chinese Chess is okay provided we have enough players coming forth!

Terence, think it better that we meet up at the kopitiam when you are in town to discuss further. Depending on respond I may just stick to a once a month affair!

I was at White Tangerine Cafe tonight and spoke to Derrick Teo. Look like another suitable place to have a chess session.

Tim, still trying to decipher those alphabet. What’s the insinuation?

    Dan

  6. Hu Dooly

You are back in town! This time I no copy and paste, I managed to type direct, still it happen only to me. Must have press a panic batton somewhere!

Now I am worried whenever I need to make some correction! Back to attending Terence’s class again.

    Big Dan

  7. “S” progressing to “T” in Chess = Chest.

Squeezing “R’ and “A” in Best you can what you hv always fancied owning one……….a “Breast”.

Now, Dan, doint worry abt breast, go bare-chest to play yr chess…………

  8. Hi Douglas,

Thanks for your interest. Let meet and play a game over some beers or cuppacino or wines!

So far we have two gals and three guys. Terence, Patrick Khoo, KT and Dennis Wee, are you coming?

    Danz

  9. Dear Jonathan,

Well, well checkers! You mean dumb, why not if there are more who are interested.

It’s seems that we may have to change Chess Cafe to Board Games Cafe. Games like Backgammon, Othello, Wei Chi, Bridge,Monopoly, Gin Rummy, Sosyty, Russian Poker, Chinese Chess and Uno but no gambling!

Look like we are re-living our childhood days! Why not if it can help us to maintain our sanity and avoid senility!

    Big Dan

  10. HI Dan,
Nice name …Board Games Cafe! Can carrom be considered a board game also?

Imagine a place where all of us can play games from their childhood…sort of like having a 2nd childhood ;-)
    Looking forward to it!

    J.O.

Dan, you forget aeroplane chess and animal chess – my favourite games when in primary school. If it is board game, you may wish to include roulette, baccarat, dai sai..etc.. Congrats…you have beaten the two IRs which are due only next year. And Kopitiam will never be as “tiam” as before.

  12. Hi Dans, and all board gammers.

The Bungalow available from 12Sept to 14 Sept Morning will be open for all gamer to bring whatever games they want to relive memories of. I am sure there will someone in the crowd who will know how to play some of these games, besides Maj Jong which is available by the way.

For info, I will bring the Checker Board professional standard one with 12 x 12 square, I can promise a coffee shop standard kind of play if anyone is game.

Also am hoping someone bring a carrom board (Dan Huang , you have ? )or any board games you want to share. I know Steven will be bringing his travel scrabble.

Steven bring also all your Vietnam photos along so those waiting for their turn at scrabble can have sometime to mull upon.

Terence, you want to introduce any Thai board game that you know of?

  13. Hi Big Dan

Is it possible to learn mahjong at the Chess cafe? Since you’re prepared to teach for/over a cuppa of kopi, what’s more appropriate a venue than the kopi tiam? I promise you 2 cups at least.

    Hv a nice day.

  14. Hi Jassmine,

Sorry, not proper to teach mahjong at the kopitiam. Better to get one or two more keen to learn and I will teach. Provided we have someone able to open their home too.

    Dan

  15. Hi Jassmine,

Have you been to White Tangerine Cafe? I don’t think it suitable over there too!

I will do some homework. Since the CC allowed mahjong, I will check whether we can book a room for this purpose. If so the MAHJONG CLUB will start latest November! How’s dat?

Mainly for small stake players and green horn!

    Dan

  16. Six players turn up at the chess Cafe yesterday. Douglas Chan sent his apology. Agnes wes there entertaining us with some snacks from her aunty’s stall.

Jassmine and Ann Lim came. Ann came to watch only and Jassmine had a chess game with Jonathan Ong who still prefer to play checker because no need to think to much!

Danz has 5 minutes chess game with Richard and lost three game out of 17 blitz games. Daniel Chan, you issued a challenge but no show.

I have played chess with Patrick Khoo before. He wanted to come with Daniel Chan but instead went on blind dates with the mares at the Turf Club! One got checkmated the other got into a stalemate!

Next venue for Chess Cafe will be at the White Tangerine Cafe at Kovan CC. The date is 5 October on a Sunday from 3.00-6.00pm.

    Danz

  17. Oooops..sorry Danz. Pat did call me several times about the games. Undecided then. I went (with friends but not Pat) to Kranji Sunday …heavy rain in Penang so races all abandoned. But since there; no fish, shrimps also good lah, esp after paying the entrance fees. So we played Perth races…aarrhhh., pittance – tiny hae bee only.

Noted 5 Oct. Try to be there. Sometimes stalemate is better than stable mate.

  18. Next Chess Cafe date is October 12, 2009 (Sunday) from 3.00-6.00pm. the venue is White Tangerine Cafe at Kovan/Paya Lebar CC.

Those keen to play Chinese Chess are also invited to join us. Other board games like Scrabbles and Bridge can come too!

I have spoken to the operator and he welcome us.

    Danz

  19. Hi Jassmine,

Thanks for pointing that out. I think my spectacle need upgrading! Do tale note date change from October 5 to October 12, 2008.

Anybody know how to play Bridge. I am sure dome of us would like to learn. Bridge like mahjong can keep our mind to be alert!

Daniel Chan and Patrick Khoo, are you coming? Hoe about over a beer or coffee?

    Danz

  20. Hi Dan
I’ve met a few ppl in SHC who know how to play bridge. I played a while back but too lazy to become good in it (so many bidding conventions to learn & remember) so I’m playing a simpler game now (French Tarot). There’s a group of us playing every Tues AM, if you want to join. I’m afraid I still havent been able to get things organised for those who want to play after office hours. if you r interested, check out the posts that were done prev on French Tarot.
    cheers

  21. Gentle reminder!

Chess Cafe resumes this Sunday October 12, 2008
    Time: 3.00pm – 5.00pm
Place: White Tangerine Cafe (Paya Lebar Kovan CC/Opposite Kovan MRT)

Chess players and those keen to learn are welcome. Those who want to play other board games are also welcome. Drinks and snacks on sale.

The operator Derrick Teo has kindly cordon off an area for us!

    Danz

  22. Hi Danz
I’ll be there. Hope you can show me the move called an “En Passant” capture.

Besides bring my little chess set, I can bring a scrabble set too if there are people interested in scrabble.

    Cheers,

  23. Hi Danz,

It was time well spent for me at the White Tangerine cafe, learning /playing chess. I didn’t foresee an unexpected bonus – the learning of a fascinating card game called “Chor Tai Tee” (no English equivalent), thanks to Maggie and Albert – two great teachers.

And TQ Danz for buying the cards.

Looking forward to the next round…at the same cafe? and perhaps ending with a jog/brisk walk at the nearby Charltan Park estate?

    Cheers,

  24. Hey! I know how to play “Chor Tai Tee” also. When is the next meeting at the White Tagerine cafe? I want to join too. Jassmine, good idea, after the game…..we can brisk walk around Charlton Park estate, which is my former residential home. EO, please include me. Thanks Danz :)

    Ah Nee

  25. Hi Jassmine and Ah Nee,

The response was not good and I think of shelving it. Since there are more interest for ‘Chor Tai Tee’ we may change it to CTT Club instead!

Anyway, if more member would indicate their interest, I will continue to have the various board games session on.

The venue here though is not that ideal because there is no air-conditioning,but there are sufficient fans around.

Perhaps we should get more member to open up their home then more interest may be generated!

    Danz

  26. Ah Nee,

So far Jassmine, Albert Tan, Maggie Teo, Danz and Patrick Khoo.

Patrick Khoo is prepare to teach anyone interested. Come to the gathering on Wednesday at Kovan CC with a pack of card. Hope it don’t run contrary to Terence’s idea of a Social gatherings night!

We can also rope in Albert and Maggie and Ah Nee to teach too!

    Danz

  27. Hi Danz @# 43

Do continue with the chess cafe and other board games. Only a change in the activity’s name is required. i.e. instead of calling it chess cafe, call it board and card game cafe or something like that.

    Hi Ah Nee @#44
Where is your ‘cool and nice venue’ for CTT? Can follow up with brisk walking/jogging?

I still need to practise CCT – it was overwhelming initially, so many things to remember, but now I think I can get the hang of it with a few more practices.

    Cheers,

  28. Hi Jassmine

Sorry took so long to respond. Thanks for the compliment. Pai seh hor. Didn’t know I would end up giving a lesson on chor tai tee !!

You are a great student – fast learner and meticulous !! Impressed by your note taking. Keep practising !!

I agree with you that this event should not be shelved.

I also agree with DanielChan2610 ref#21 (a while back) to change the name to Board Games cafe and incorporate other board games.

Ah Nee and Douglas Chan have indicated their interests. Anyone else?

For myself, I can play chor tai tee, carrom, scrabble, chess and checkers. As you can see, not much of a bookworm…too lazy…only want to play.

  29. Hi folks

The Chess Cafe will be renamed Board Games Cafe.

Due to popular request it will not be shelved! The next session is on November 1, 2008 on a Saturday from 4.00pm – 7.00pm.

Any kind of board games are welcome. Daniel Chan, did you mentioned Aeroplane games and what is ‘dai sai’. Not fogetting CTT, Gin Rummy and Joy’s recommendation ‘Rush Hour’

Venue will still be White Tangerine Cafe at Kovan CC. I am also looking seriously at Han’s at Great Eastern and checking with the boss there whether we can gather for our games.!

Right now I know of two operators who operate Games Cafe as a business concern. The one at South Canal Road is know as the Settler Cafe and the other in Potong Paiseh. There charge by the hour!

Maggie Teo a game enthusiast will be assisting me in these games session!

    Danz

  30. Hi Danz,

Long Live the Board Game Cafe!
May join you guys for the next session.

Anyone knows how to play backgammon?
It’s a board game play with dices.

Have not been playing for ages,
and would like to refresh my skills
    again.
Need to go and hunt for the board first
    and clean away the dust……

    Cheers,
    Constance

  31. Hi Constance,

I do have some idea about Backgammon, we will meet up with those interested and have a game.

Anyone keen to learn new board games are welcome to join us. The list are as follows: Chess, Chor Tai Tee, Russian Poker, Strip Poker, Gin Rummy, Chinese Chess, Bridge, Carrom, Scrabble, Othello, Wei Chi, Checker, Monopoly, Tarot and Tim Liu will teach us how to play Indian Chess!

White Tangerine Cafe also encourage board games as there have some games for loan.

As Jonathan Ong comment, we want to relive our childhood days and now we are undergoing our second childhood fantasies after 45!

  32. Hi Danz @# 48

Oh dear, the next game session is on a Sat instead of the usual Sunday. Can extend the time to 8pm? I can only get there after 7p.m. If not, then I’ll give it a miss and hope the next session would be held on a Sunday afternoon.

BTW, you mentioned a game cafe at “Potong Paiseh” @# 48. Do you mean Potong Pasir along Upper Serangoon Road? If it is indeed in PPasir, could you give me the address? Tks.

    Cheers,

  33. Hi SHCians

Would appreciate your feedback on your interest and preference of game, time and place so that we can do some planning and be prepared and bring right equipment…a sai bo?

We also need to know numbers to make a decision whether to go ahead with this or not.

Hey Ah Nee, if you’re still interested in a game of ‘chor tai tee’ with me, pls drop me an email at maggieteo_0517@hotmail.com and we can exchange numbers. Sorry about missing out the cycling and makan with the cycling group…boo boo on my part.

    Thanks!

  34. Good morning Maggie Teo.

I love board and card cames. Scrabble is one of my favourites.

I was lucky to be taught “chor tai tee” by Dan yesterday, at the Swimming Meet and I thoroughly enjoyed the game.

I also taught a few to play a new game called “Golf”, which is not in the least bit related to the real golf. It’s a game I learnt in Ireland while I was there and I will be willing to teach it again if anyone is interested.

Mahjong is also another game I like but I much prefer to play with small stakes or even with points only. Similarly, with the other games.

Besides these, I’m keen to learn or refresh other ‘table’ games if there are any others.

As to the venue, my main problem is I’m in Pasir Ris, but if the venue is easily accessible and not too far away, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

For the next 2 to 3 months, I’ll be quite free the whole day, except for Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings and the occasional day here and there, when I have other commitments.

So, sign me up. Alternatively, we could communicate via email. My address is MeiliiX@gmail.com

    Cheers

  35. Hi Mary

Thanks for your response ! Wow, you’re an early bird. Sorry could not reply earlier.

Glad to learn that Dan is teaching chor tai tee so we can rope in more players. I’ve never heard of ‘Golf’ but I’m keen to learn. Sounds intriguing.

As Jassmine has mentioned that she is unable to make it earlier, we may start at a later time at 5pm so that she can join us as she is very keen and we want to keep her interest intact.

Hope venue is not a problem. I assume you’ve been to the Paya Lebar-Kovan CC ? It will most likely be held there.

Thanks again for your quick response !

  36. Hi Maggie @ # 52

If it’s held at White Tangerine cafe on a Sunday afternoon, I’m most likely able to participate. My priority is chess but will also play/learn other board games or card games.

Hey, anyone interested in doing crossword puzzles?

    Cheers,

  37. Good morning Maggie T,

I would like to join you all playing the card games if time permits. First week and last week of November, I am going for a China Tour and ChiangMai adventurer trip, also whole of December, there will be lots of makaning & partying, so I guess I can only join this Board Game / Card Game next year. Sounds like so long, but its only about 2 months from now. See you then….. :)

    Ah Nee

  38. Hi again Maggie Teo.
Paya Lebar -Kovan CC is no problem.
So, when do we start? What day? If we have some who can make it earlier, perhaps we can start earlier?

  39. Hi Mary

Sorry for late reply. I thought Dan mentioned that he had put on the calender that it is confirmed for Sat, 1 Nov at 4pm at Paya-Lebar Kovan CC but I don’t see it. Anyway it is confirmed. By the way, is ‘Golf’ a card game? You need to teach me this game !!

Jassmine, sincerely hope you can make it. We’ll wait for you if you’re confirmed coming.

Hi Ah Nee, no worries. Have a wonderful holiday ! We’ll catch up another time.

    TTFN !!

  40. Hi All
It may be at times that I missed out listing certain activities to reflect in the Event Calendar as I might overlook or missed reading them in the comments. So I would appreciate that those events that you felt that should be listed in the Event Calendar, pls write to me to my email address at dlgummy@hotmail.com so that I am sure dat I will read the email.

But not all activities will be published unless it is confirmed as an ‘ON’ event.

Your kind understanding would be much appreciated. Dolly

  41. Hi Maggie

Thanks for preparing to wait for me. Paiseh.

Actually I don’t mind missing this session as I feel that you (and whoever else is waiting) may be quite tired mentally and physically after three hours of table games (if you begin at 4p.m.). Do end at 7p.m. if it’s more convenient/practical for you (and everybody else).Don’t feel bad.

If the group stops play for dinner, may I recommend the Hainanese boneless chicken rice at the hawker centre (really delicious).

If the session is stretching to 8p.m I’ll come around 7p.m. and I’ll bring my chess set. If you want me to bring scrabble, do let me know. I also have UNO cards.

    Cheers,

  42. Maggie,
Oops. I think I have another engagement on the 1st of Nov, for dinner, if that materialises.
I will teach you the cardgame, ‘Golf’ at another occasion ok?
If the dinner isn’t on, then I will attend the games session.
