Live Edge Competition – Anyone ?

Hi all,
If anyone has an idea and wishes to work with others to conceptualise it commercially, here will be a good opportunity to have it evaluated, and maybe win a prize too.  If however you are interested to work in a team as you feel you have half of what it takes then email me to work as a team, bswi@yahoo.com.  I do have many crazy ideas, and have the electronic engineering experience in past projects, but do need a strong partner as I have what is termed as ‘fuzzy logic’ when I engaged in designing. Thus a methodical, task manager who is flexible and who is as passionate about being creative is the partner/partners I am looking for in this competion for fun or just to keep our minds active.
Prizes Worth Winning
Two unique prize packages are up for grabs for the winners of Live EDGE’s student and general/open competitions, which run concurrently. Submit your design for the chance to see its journey from concept to live creation.

  1. Hi all,

Here are the past winners of this competition. This might help to spur those who are scientifically inclined and are innovative to get their minds thinking.

Since its launch in May 2007, over 3,500 design engineers, students and academics from 102 countries have registered for the competition

Premier Farnell plc (LSE:pfl), the leading multi-channel, high service distributor supporting millions of engineers and purchasing professionals globally, has announced the winner of the 2007 Live EDGE Electronic Design for the Global Environment challenge as John Noble from Malaysia.

John has designed a product called MyFan, a ceiling fan that combines an electronically commutated motor and controller, and aerodynamically efficient blade design that reduces fan input power by up to 66% of that of a traditional ceiling fan. It boasts auxiliary output channels that drive up to 20 watts of integrated LED lighting with up/down lighting modules. The Motor construction is totally enclosed and is available with an IP5x environmental rating.

The judges noted that Johns design demonstrated the best originality and innovation of the entered designs, the highest technical merit, a reduced effect on the global environment, provided the best feasibility of design, clearly showed efficient use of energy, provided innovative use of components, good cost optimisation, completeness of design dossier and excellent supporting documentation.

“It is a great honour to have my design recognised by such an esteemed panel of judges,” said John Noble, winner of Live EDGE 2007 challenge. “Live EDGE has provided design engineers a forum to focus more on the issue of sustainability and not just growth.”

Also providing excellent designs are the five runner ups; Thomas Reiter a student from Austria designing a unique miniature battery saving switch-mode power supply, Minesh Bhakta from the U.K. designing an energy gauge that helps manage the use of electrical sockets, Carlos Marques from Portugal on behalf of his company ID-Mind, who’s design is for a 3D SunTracker optimising the effectiveness of solar panels, Dale Stepps from Florida in the U.S. on behalf of his company Inteltech Corporation for a solid state luminare and Alaistair Macfarlane from Scotland designing a LED intelligent light, all receiving $5,000 USD.

    Cheers

  2. Hi Ron

Count me in…got some crazy ideas at times. Didn’t know who to throw it at, now I know. May need a while to get my grey cells working again.

  3. Hi Maggie,

Good to hear that, no ideas are crazy, the crazier the better, else now we will not have ships, trains or jet planes. I am crazy about making things happen so let us see what can materialise from being crazy at times.

The first men who wanted to fly, sail around the world, etc were all considered crazy when they suggested the ideas.

So no worries I can accept crazy ideas anytime, keep them coming. It is only crazy women that I can’t accept maybe not yet for the time being,hymm.. Cheers

  4. Hi Maggie and all,

I will be having a brain storming session soon, with one other lady who seems to have been triggered to unravel all the hidden gems of ideas in her mind.

So if there is any one else wanting to participate in any capacity get in touch with me soon. Brainstorming, session will start soon, and for info, I do have the facilitator experience in running a WIT (work inprovement team) Cheers

  5. Hi all,

The LIve Edge competition – is about using Electrical/Eletronic Technology to improve the way we are using Energy in our daily lifes. The closing dates is 31Jan 2009.
So if you are keen to join me and Maggie and Jasmine to submit our entry/entries meet us for a chat on Nov18 Monthly Meeting.
One Idea I am working on is how to convert the abundance of kinetic energy available in Singapore’s high rise residential living from the energy spent daily.

Singapore has been spending and catering a big slice of our budget in such areas, even on Wind energy which Spore does not really have. These include the establishment of a world-class R&D centre for wind energy by Danish wind energy company Vestas; the opening of German solar company SolarWorld’s regional headquarters; the investment of S$153.9 million (US$100 million) by Rolls-Royce to conduct fuel cell R&D with local agencies like A*STAR; and the set up of Singapore’s first solar cell manufacturing plant by local company, Solar Energy Power.

So those amongst us who have such a passion in design, research, project, grant/fund management can join us to at least to show that the active senior living is not just about chatting, exercising, dancing, karaoking, cycling, or working our lives away but at least we can try to help in some ways to conserve/recyle energy.. come and join us. Cheers
