Charity Event – Jan 24’2009 (Lunch)

Hi SHCians,

A few of us were discussing couple of weeks back that we intend to organise Charity Event before the CNY for those old and needy folks so that they are also able to enjoy the joy of CNY festive season.

We will be arranging a buffet lunch for about 200paxs (this cost had been taken care of) and was hoping that we can get more sponsors to give them a small goodies bag containing 1 pkg of biscuit, 1 tin of small milo and 1 small angpow so that they

Besides the usual helpers to help out in the distribution of meals to them.  I am also hoping that some of you can come forward to perform some entertainment items for them, i.e. sing song, line dancing or social dancing – Any volunteers for this showtime, pls come forward to help to make this a joyous occasion for these folks… :)

But since I hv limited cash flow on hand, I might not able to cater any lunches for all of you, so I really hope that all of you dont mind paying the lunch at your own expense.

This Event will be held on:

Date : January 24’2009 (Saturday)
Time : 12.30 – 3.30pm (Lunch will provided for those old and needy)
Venue: Church of the Nativity at the basement of the Community Hall
Address: 1259 Upper Serangoon Road (ard Hougang Ave8)

Kind contribution can be make via Lum Oi Cheng POSB Saving A/C 117-00132-6.  Thanking you in advance for the kind generosity received.

Getting there:  Nearest MRT station – Hougang (NE14)

Buses along Hougang Ave 8 : 62, 74, 113, 119 and 147 – alight at Punggol Park/opp Punggol Park (depending on which direction you are coming from)

Yes, helpers definitely needed to pack these goodies bags… Count you in liao… Dolly

  32. Hi Dolly,

No problem for sponsoring 450pcs, even 4500 pcs, haha, if it is for a good cause. My only concern is how to transport those oranges there?

Any show of hand for transport, if suppose the vendor do not provide delivery?

No need to feel malu lah. Dolly and I are very touched at the generosity of our SHC members not only in terms of $$$ but also their time. We are both very excited about this event.

Thanks buddies for the fellowship last night – I had a great time.

  41. Hi…Dolly

Very thoughtful of you to come up with this for the festive seasons. Not easy to co-ordinate, I must say. But with the help of many, I believe there is little problem, if any.

I shall be happy to contribute something for the sake of making others happy. What and how much is the question. So please allow me to ask – who are “those old and needy folks”? Are they from an old folks home or residents in a housing estate, identified by the grassroot committees?

    Thanks.

  42. Hey Dolly…yippee for this event!! I wanna help pls and I would like to donate $100. Thanks much for organising this event.

  45. Dolly Dolly,

The response to this Charity event is so overwhelming, I can help out if you still need manpower lor. I wonder if this is restricted to SHC members only? My son had performed magic tricks / card tricks to the old folks home, orphanage before, if can, he don’t mind do it for this Charity event.

    Ah Nee

  46. Hi Daniel,
Not sure if you ever heard of willing hearts organisation (http://www.willinghearts.org.sg). This is a non-profitable organisation that fundamentally a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes 600 meals to the needy including the elderly, adults and children ard Bukit Merah, Taman Ho Swee, Hougang, Little India (usually foreign workers). Folks refer Old folks staying in those 1rm rented flat and those needy (old or young, local or foreign)that are in financial difficulties. Though I am sure some of you will question the real situation of these needy but as far as the person-in-charge is concerned, he prefers to give them the benefit of doubts as he felt that it takes a great courage for 1 to come in this plc for food and I respect that.

My snr ever told me that they are not on government fundings but they hv support for locals, i.e. vegatables, rice and bread sellers. They are also volunteers who are willing to provide xport to collect these and also to make dlvy of meal packets to the respective locations of SG.

    Cheers… Dolly

  47. Hi Lilian,
So sorry to left your name earlier. LKK lah, paiseh…

    Thanks

  59. Hi SHCians,
I know that everyone will be wandering about the lunch arrangement. May I suggest that we ask the soup kitchen to cater this for us also so that we can join and have the meal together with folks for interaction.

I will be meeting him up again next week to discuss further and any new updates after that, will be posted here accordingly.

  60. Dear All, beside the church community hall, there is a Canteen which cater free breakfast & lunch to the public. All of you may want to have your lunch there on that day. A donation is appreciated. This canteen’s entrance is along Hougang Ave 8, directly opposite Punggol Park. Alternatively, there is a 24-hr Kopitiam beside this Canteen.
For your information: there is a charity hair-cut for the public every second Tuesday of the month beside this Canteen compound. And a bi-monthly (also on a Tuesday) charity hair-cut at Bishan Home.
There are about 15 – 20 volunteers to do the hair-cut. I am one of the volunteers.

    Cheers, margaret

  61. Oop …… Bishan Home is every 2 mths, not bi-monthly. the residents’ hair can’t grow that fast. Type too fast :)

    margaret

  62. Hi Molly, noted help from you. Thanks.

From the overwhelming responses from each and every of you, I believed that we had enough helpers needed for the event hence, we will close the helpers’ list as of now. For those who are going to help out but yet to register, thanking you in advance and I believed that there will be many more such event in the near future that will definitely will require such help. However, should I require additional pairs of hands to help out later in the process, I will not hesitate to put up my request here again. Many thanks.

I will be coming up with a list of chores requred to help out soon. Akan datang.. ok…

Hi Margaret, thanks for useful info.

    Cheers.. Dolly

  63. (#9)Hello Dolly – just logged in & saw your question. I will donate $100 AND a quilt (I brought back a shipment of my self-made quilts when I moved back from the US). Question: is it ok to donate a quilt? I thot I better ask, that’s why I gave you my email address. (I am out of town before the Chinese New Year period). Can I transfer/iBANK/ATM to your account the $100? Please email me your account number. Tks.

  68. Hi Charles Chua,

As this is the festive season, I am not sure whether are they able to deliver. I will try to get vendor to deliver the oranges. Thank you for your offer for transportation.

    Hi Dolly,

As the event falls on the eve of Chinese New Year, would appreciate if you could let me know when to deliver the mandarin oranges & the schedule of packing of the ‘goodies bag’? You can email to susantan06@yahoo.com

Would appreciate if you could put up the schedule in this thread as soon as possible as I am sure some of them need planning ahead due to this festive season.

    susan tan

  69. Hi..Susan..I think 24th JAN is the eve of CNY EVE. Hope I am right, coz EVE will be a busy day for many.

Thanks Dolly for the clarification. Noble efforts indeed. Shall certainly respond. See u on the 17th.

  70. Hi Susan/Daniel,
Jan 24 is not the eve of CNY but is 2days away b4 CNY. Anyway, noted that some of them might be busy with the preparation for CNY but we still decided to go ahead with the event since we had already given to our promise to them. For those that registered earlier as helpers but unable to do so now due to this reason, is OK, we understand. Just let us know earlier so that we can re-deploy the helpers’ duties according to the number of helpers we had.

Susan, since OiCheng will be the 1 to handle those goodies purchases, why not let her do you a favor to order these oranges on your behalf and you pay her cash on that day itself rather than ding ding dong dong abt this subj, rite?

As all works will be done on the actual day itself, the only request that I had is that all helpers try to come in abit earlier to help out in packing of goodies bag, laying the tables and chairs. However, I will need to discuss further with the person-in-charge before I can put a tentative program for that day but actually I dont feel the need to as I prefer everyone to be actively participate in the sing along session with them. Nevertheless, pls give me till this week to work this out ok..

Hi Helen, thanks for the contribution and I will KIV you in the helpers’ list ok… Cheers.. Dolly

  71. Hi Dolly,
Taking a closer look at next year’s calendar, I am unable to help on the day. But will still contribute the $100 on Wednesday to OI Cheng. Thought I ‘d better inform you before you schedule the work….Jie

Thank you for the offer #80. Will try to get the vendor to deliver the 10 ctns of oranges. If can’t, will let you know or call for help?

    susan tan

  79. Hi Veronique – thank you for your contribution of $100.

KingSeng@37 and StevenChan@53 – have sent you email of websites that you can surf for location of places and buses to get around. Happy surfing them!

Susan, I have already requested Soup Kitchen to order the mandarin oranges from nearby and to deliver them on that morning. This will free Charles to help in other transportation where needed and save you the time hunting around. You can pay cash on that day.

  80. Hi Oi Cheng,

That’s great! Thank you for your help.

Pls let me know how much have I got to pay? By the way, how many cartons did you order?

Hi Charles, have also got to thank you for your offer. Sorry forgotten about it altogether.

    susan tan

  81. OiCheng, after you left, Jrennifer Lim and Charles Chua each passed $100 to me and I will bank the $200 into your POSB asap, pls take note… Thanks… Dolly

PS: Charles said that so long as his xport is needed, pls do not hesitate to contact him, ok..

  82. Oi Cheng #97

Thank you for your email repl. I was trying to be lazy and get the information from you rather than surfing the net.

I should be able to find the way there as I am living quite near to the place.

    Regards

    King Seng

  83. Hi King Seng & Sock Cheng,

  93. Hi Dolly #109,

Remember, I mention I plan to bring a 1300 watt DVD/Karaoke music system to Frasers. Well, I will bring it along too. Tian Soo was concerned we will scare the birds on the way to Siberia. I think on the charity day, the old and needy will be able to hear very clearly the singing from our own songbirds. I shall bring two mics.

Hope you and all of us can provide those older than us at the charity event an enjoyable day.

    Terence Seah

  94. Hi Terence,

( Remember, I mention I plan to bring a 1300 watt DVD/Karaoke music system to Frasers.
Well, I will bring it along too.)

1300 watts that will be more than enough to “blast” the ear drums of the old and elderly.

Are we having a rock concert ? Ha! Ha!

  95. Hi Ah Nee #100

I have been to the church today (21 Dec 2008) and know how to go there. I should have see your comments earlier, however, thank you for the invite. It is good to go together as we can talk in the bus. I will wait for you at the Kovan Melody taxi stand.

    Regards

  96. Hi Dolly and Oi Cheng,

  97. Hi Jassmine

Thank you for your $100 contribution.

Can I hand the $100 cheque made in Oi Cheng’s name to Dolly on New Year’s Eve because I had issued the cheque on 15 December to hand to her at Hans monthly gathering. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the 17 Dec due to urgent priority.

Dolly, I will remind myself to hand it to you immediately when I arrive at the venue.

  104. Oi Cheng/Dolly, fyi transferd at 15:01/26Dec S$200 to OC’s account. Ladies…. kudos!

    Cheers.. Dolly

  106. Hi All,
For those whom had volunteer to sing/perform on this day, pls write to me via email dlgummy@hotmail.com your intended song to be sung. Not sure if we are able to get the equipt set up as BL will need to go down and look at the premise first. Eventhough, we are unable to get the necessary eqpt req’d for performance, I am sure that these folks will definitely wun mind you ‘ching chang’ lor.. tio bo?

    Cheers.. Dolly

  107. Hi OiCheng,
Lin Chuah had passed $200 for this contribution and I will do a transfer to your Acct soon. Will let you know once it is done. OK… Cheers..Dolly

  108. Hi Dolly and OiCheng
I think one of the posts abve mentioned giving us the lyrics for KongSi KongSi Kongsi Nee Ah…so that all of us could sing at the end of the session?…is it coming along pls?…..aside: I take a long long time memorising lyrics, lagi worse a chinese song…:-)))

  109. Hi OiCheng,
I recalled that you did hv something on you-tube for CNY lyrics but not sure if they are sent out via email or other, pls help June and others on this ok… Dolly

  110. Hi Clara, Judy, Shrleen, Thomas and June

Have sent you an email so please liase with each other on the songs and lyrics. What I have sent out earlier seem not the same as the lyrics so I guess there are several versions.

    Thank you.
    Oi Cheng

  111. Hi Dolly Dolly,

I must not complicate matters, so I will contribute $100 instead of the goodies bags to you. Pse adv which account I should bank in and I will do it by today. Many thanks.

  112. Dear Celia,
Thank you vry much for the kind understanding. In fact, while OiCheng and me were discussing yesterday on this event, we were pondering on options and am glad you had solved it. Great minds think alike hor… :)

You can either ATM/IB to Lum Oi Cheng POSB Saving A/C 117-00132-6. Cheers… Dolly

  113. “……..giving us the lyrics for KongSi KongSi Kongsi Nee Ah…so that all of us could sing at the end of the session…” Huh ??!!

Read “kongxi” as “congratulate” and what’s there for us to congratulate the old and needy going back to biding their time bomb after the pomp?

CNY favourites like “yin choon hua”, “ta di hui choon”, “chai shng tou” are sprightly, lively and bring hope. Granted though. “kongxi kongxi” is a easier song to sing but to congratulate them in their predicament isnt something easy to do.

    Haha, well, whatever…………………

  114. Hi Dolly and Oi Cheng,

Haha, yes, great minds think alike. I had just deposited $100 into Oi Cheng’s POSB savings a/c at the Siglap POSB branch. cheers.

  115. Oi Cheng, Just to inform you that I’ve just transferred $100/= into your acct 117-00132-6. Transaction no. 3487 at 7:10am today, 30/12/08. Sorry for the delay as I keyed in the wrong acct no. yesterday which was actually somebody’s transaction no. and not knowing that, I still went to the bank teller to try and do the transfer but was told that there’s no such acct no. My apologies. Lisa

  116. Hi Oicheng/dolly,
Good event, not able to help-out but would like to show support by contributing $100 for this good cause.

Had already passed the money to Janet Heng to give it to Oicheng.

    Janet Heng: thanks.

    Happy new year everyone!
    weejee

  117. Oi Cheng / Dolly

Have today dropped my POSB cheque no. 300605 into Oi Cheng’s bank account. Just noticed it on the web comments.

    Regards
    Helen

  118. Hi Wee Jee

Thank you for your contribution of $100.

Here’s wishing everyone good health, peace and happiness for 2009!

  119. Hi OiCheng,
Pls note that Ann To had passed me $100 to contribute for this event and I had requested YK to transfer this amt 2u as I m on China wrkg trip now. Thanks.. Dolly

  120. Thank you Ann To for your contribution of $100 and YK for doing the transferring.

I shall update contributions on the post after I return from my trip on 7 Jan.

  121. Yes U are right Tim..:-) Not appropriate to sing that KOngSi song.
I wasn’t thinking abt the words, jus wanted something easy to sing..:-)))….silly me!!

Like I said in the email, I thot it would be good if all of us sing one of those CNY songs whn we bid goodbye to the folks.
But I am not insisting…anything is fine with me, as long as I am part of this event.:-)))

    Hi Dolly and OiCheng.
As helpers, wht do we do pls? Be there at 12.30? or be there earlier? When do we pack the goodie bags? the angpows? etc etc.

  122. Haha, June-L, no wolly lah, the KongXi song is actually a very beautiful song and it certainly will be sung by many during CNY…………..in fact I am practising He (Her) Xinien for this event…………the lyrics spread hope for the future.

In another thread (or was it a threat?), Joy was in joy to see me as a smoked fish and Mary-C too was all over-Joy(ed) that I’ll soon be smoked out. Well, if they dont want me to smoke, obviously they long for my smooch………..that I will do if they promise to brush their teeth first and bo bitul-nut chewing from now on, heeehe.

  123. Hi All,
Sori for the much late replies from both OiCheng and me as both of us r now not in SG till Jan 7’09. So our replies mite b abit delayed.

As 4 helpers, I am only b listing out the help scope after SIC, i.e. after Jan 11’09, hence, pls be patient lah.. From a start, some helpers may come in as early as 9.30am to help to lay out tables/chairs and packing of goodie bags lor.. Nevertheless, pls wait for my emails to all helpers and comments here, ok… Cheers.. Dolly

  124. Hi Dolly & Oi Cheng,

    Pls reply.

    susan tan

  126. Hi All helpers,
I hv emphasized numerous times in my earlier posts that I will only be coming up the help list after SIC, i.e. 11/1/09, so pls do not ask me anymore for any schedule cos you r definitely not going to have 1 till den. Meanwhile, pls find time to enjoy SIC event first ok…

    Hi Susan,
OiCheng had already enlisted someone to buy/deliver these oranges liao, just bring the $$$ on dat day when she passed you the receipt lor.. I dont think these oranges need any travel insurance la.. hahahaha.. Dolly

  127. Hi Dolly,

I understand that the oranges already in Singapore warehouse by now with insurance paid by whoever. This insurance which I owe her is for the trip to Fraser Hill. Sorry, I did not make my statement clear in my earlier post.

Ok, will wait for your list of assignment to be published soon.

    susan tan

  128. Susan

I do understand what you mean and I know Dolly was pulling your leg. Ha! ha! ha!

Anyway, please do not mix charity contribution with travel insurance payment. I’d prefer to be clear cut about this.

  129. Hi ChristinaWH

Either there is a change in your email add or your mail box is full. My email to you keep bouncing back. Could you please confirm here which day did you do the transfer? Thanks.

  130. Hi All,
Kindly note that we will not be collecting any more contribution with immediate effect.

Volunteers/Helpers, I had send you via email on this, pls refer to them accordingly. Not sure if I had missed out any one, pls let me know.

    Cheers… Dolly

  131. Hi All SHCian helpers,
Todate, I had rec’d most of replies with regards to helps needed. However, there is still that had yet to reply me via email. Pls do so asap so that I can plan for the logistics details… Cheers… Dolly

  132. Oi Cheng & Dolly,

Can you pls include my husband Freddie for lunch as well. He can also help out with some chores of laying tables and mingling with with the old folds etc. Unfortunately, he’s a terrible singer, so pls leave him out from singing, otherwise, he’ll get us all off-key, ha….ha…. Lisa.

  133. Hello Dolly,
Many thanks for your email. Yes, I understand what you mean. Have a wonderful time on the 24th. And keep up the good work!
    Happy Lunar New Year.
    Cheers, Florence

  134. Hi Lisa #156,

Can you please ask Freddie to contact admin, as we do not have his membership? Thank you.

    Terence Seah

  135. Hi Oi Cheng,

Pls let me know how much have I got to pay for the mandarin oranges? By the way, how many cartons did you buy for me? Will settle by the end of the day. Its no good to owe $. Will also pay $15.15 on that day. Will pay you the exact amount.

Gong Xi Fatt Choy to all!

    susan tan

  136. Hi Florence, thanks for the kind understanding and encouraging words. Hope to c u in other activities next time hor…

Sigh, Susan, till today, the issue of mandarin oranges still around.. Anyway, I am sure that once OiCheng get any info on the cost of these oranges, she will definitely let you know soonest possible. If not, just pay her on the actual day itself, ok… Dolly

  137. Hi Dolly,

I know you again said that.

Anyway, Oi Cheng, I shall bring $200.00 on that day, included the travel insurance which you paid for me. If the amount is not enuf, pls let me know before the 24th Jan.

Sorry Dolly, got to mention the travel insurance again.

    see u ard, folks

    susan tan

  138. Hi Dolly,

I would like to be a volunteer for dance performance to entertain old and needy folks.

    Francis

  139. Thoughtful of you to put up a danz performance. Howevr, the danz wuill have to fit the occasion and the audience, so I will be doing the “jiang loong 18 charn” (landing the dragon with 18 slaps) which I learned from Hong 7 Kung. If I am not mistaken, Dolly will be our Mieh Jueh Shi Tai (Exterminator Abbotess) of Ermei and she will be cutting the air with her Yi Tian sword.

For the rest of us, they will put away their line danz shoes for lion danz boots…………….

  140. Hi Francis,
Thank you for voluntering a dance item for these folk, however as I had mentioned earlier, eventhough there might b some chance that we hv a sound system set but nothing concrete so far. So if u still keen to perform, u must able to cater for this reqmt just in case of no system scenario. However, if you do reli perform, wuld prefer u do cha cha, orbit cha cha which these folks are familiar with, ok? Let me know so that I can slot in this program accordingly.

Aiyo, if I m Mieh Jueh Shi Tai with Yi Tian qian, who will be Jin Mao Shi Wang with Du Long Dao har.. hehehehe…

All SHCians, both OiCheng and me had a meeting with person-in-charge yesterday and was told that these folks will be arriving from 11am onwards and probably finished lunch ard 2.30pm before leaving for their adoptive home. Hence, would appreciate those that had promised to arrive 9.30am to be on time so that chores can be distributed and carried out smoothly.

Hi Lisa, hv you settled with Terence with regards to Freddie’s membership?

Hi Susan, pls refer to my email to you on the subj of oranges. Your kind understanding much appreciated. Thanks.. Dolly

  141. Hi Terence,

Pls note that my husband Freddie Tan Boon Keng has been registered as a member about a year ago together with my sis-in-law, Jackie Tan but both are quite inactive, reason being that he works in KL. I remembered my husband attended 1 SHC monthly meet at Scoreboard and Jackie attended one of the Pot-Luck lunch at Pasir Ris Park. Could you pls check and advise if he’s registered under Freddie or Fred as I can’t really remember. Do let me know what I need to do immediately if his name is not found so that he can be included as a helper for this coming Sat’s Charity Event. Many thanks, Lisa.

  142. Hi Lisa #165,

Thank you for giving the full name of Freddie. We do have a few Freddies in our membership. He is a confirmed member.

Jackie Tan has been confirmed as a member.

    Terence Seah
