Promotion of IT knowledge and skills among SilverHairs

Yew Kwong, whom everybody know very well, leads and conducts IT knowledge and training skills among our membership.  He appeared today on 938 LIVE, 0810 hrs this morning.

During the interview, Yew Kwong elaborates and addresses the importance of picking up more IT skills.  With basic IT knowledge, YK sees that seniors can get more information easily.  At entry level, YK teaches computer appreciation, besides surfing the net, how to be safe and secure, as well as online internet banking.

Thank you Yew Kwong for representing the SilverHairsClub.

  1. Hi everybody,

If you had tuned on to 938 Live this morning at 0810 hrs, you would have heard Yew Kwong addressing the issues of Seniors acquiring more IT knowledge and skills. To encourage the learning of IT skills, there should be family and friends’ support. The training venue should also be conducive. YK added that Seniors have benefitted, especially in the area of internet banking. 938 Live radio interviewers commented that YK’s program can also benefit younger people. As seniors become less mobile, internet banking would definitely be more convenient, instead of queuing at the bank.

Thanks Yew Kwong, very inspiring to all seniors listening to you today.

  2. Alamak! Yew Kwong,

    Ah Nee

  3. Yew Kwong

Great achievement and remarkable job done in helping the senior folks to overcome fear of IT. See now “ah pek” and “ah ma” can use IB to do their own errands.

With Terence bringing us to breathtaking place and live spartan life, and Yew Kwong teaching IT knowledge, I believe our folks will enjoy their golden years without feeling helpless at all.

    Best Regards
    Helen

  4. Hi Yew Kwong,

How come you did not bring to our attention that you will be on air? Cos I am sure Ah Nee, Susan and Norlinda will take leave to listen to you. And I will be glad to miss my swimming this morning for this golden opportunity, as Ah Nee puts it.
I have acquired some IT skills, thanks to you. But still we have to keep on updating, otherwise we give it all back to you.
Ah Nee, will you take leave to listen to YK talk? U got lots of leave, right?

  7. Hi All

Very sorry. Too little time to broadcast. Was informed by Terence in yesterday’s late afternoon. Yesterday also bz day in office n outside to do last minute shopping for stuff for my elder kid who is enlisting for NS this morning.

Slept late last nite doing some preparations. This morning I left the house wif my family for P Tekong after I had finished the interview on radio. Toured the P Tekong camp n just got home half an hour ago.

Joy Chuang sms me while I was waiting for cab to Pasir Ris outside my house to catch the connecting bus to Changi ferry point. She is a successful Internet Banking user now after attending the Internet Banking session in Jan 08.

Most of us here know the importance of using technology to move our lives, especially communicating with one another n seeking information from the Net. If you are keen to learn something that will benefit you, do put in your says.

In the past, we had done sessions like Computer Appreciation, Internet n Emailing, Internet Banking, Buy n Sell Online via eBay, Online Chatting, Downloading n compiling music n video from Youtube, PowerPoint plus partial coverage on Internet Security (what n how) n Photo Editing using Picasa.

Importantly, if you have something to share n would like to impart them to members, we are ready to offer ourselves as volunteer assistants in your classes.

In whatever we had done, our sole objective is to bring the members’ IT skill to par. SHC offers a gd platform for learning. In fact you can learn many things you never get to learn elsewhere.

  8. HiYew Kwong,

I would like very much to attend the IT course. I am working part time so need to be informed of time and day of week. Already committed on sat and sunday afternoons.

    Thank you.

    Geok Suan

  9. Hi Yew Kwong,

I was just driving at about 6.12pm to go jogging, and then, with my FM on, I think there was this clip on 93.8, and there was a slight repeat about your talk this morning, yah. Glad to be able to catch it, tks. cheers.

  10. Wei Wei Ah Nee,

We missed the broadcast again lah! Celia Wong said she heard YK’s repeat at 6.12pm. Tomorrow, you better bring your transistor to office. Which IT skill are you best at? For me, I am best at internet banking. Tranfer my funds to fellow SHCians for events, pay all my bills, and maybe transfer some to you too. Haha! But,I think better go learn mahjong first, so the brain is good and remember all these IT skills.

  11. Wei Wei Lina,

Hahaha, yes I really did heard that part on radio 938, so I was just saying to myself, “huh, its that for real….” as Terence had just put on the SHC website……. cheers

  12. Lina, I have applied for internet banking but till today, have not activate it yet. Guess it’s expired. Perhaps I am skeptical & still not comfortable in using Ibanking to pay for my bills. How about this ? I teach you how to play mj and you teach me how to use ibanking, ok? By the way, I did received your $$ via Ibanking the other day. I am sure your fund transfer skills are better than mine. :)

  13. The SilverHairsClub is pretty well known to the Singapore media. When I receive a request for a media interview, I would usually ask one of our senior members to meet up with the media.

Yew Kwong has been with SHC for a number of years; and besides being an advocate of IT skills for seniors, he is also familiar with SHC culture, activities and membership.

Thank you Yew Kwong for the great interview today.

    Terence Seah

  14. Hi YK,
Could you ask the 938 to give you a copy of the broadcast tape and share with SHC members? No harm trying as you’ll only know if you ask.

Btw, when are you coming to take a look at the monitors and keyboards that I told you about? Instead of selling to the Karung Guni, I’d rather we donate it to SHC to do whatever we want with it and maybe you can also teach us how to dismantle and learn along the way etc. Lisa

  15. Hi Yew Kwong,

You are the best. After attending a few IT classes, I have
benefited quite a lot from you. I enjoyed most is the movie maker video.
I can add transitions between my photos and create a slide show with background music. Lately, I make a slideshow
as a X’mas gift for my girl and friends showing the happy
moment we spend together this Christmas. They were laughing away and were so happy.

Thank you once again Yew Kwong.

    Cheers.
    Lin

  16. Hi All

It’s Kwong Wah that I have to thanks. I merely worked on his ideas to run some session wif help from him n other volunteers like Karen Thio, Mollie Tan, Rose Leong n Jade Phua.

If more members can come forward to share their skills n knowledge, our members will have even more opportunities to learn new things.

  17. Hi Yew Kwong:

You have done a great job organising and conducting these IT courses.

I have gain a lot from the courses you conduct.

A big thank you to you and your team.

    King Seng

  18. I am not very good at IT (technical aspect) but I have been making a living since 2003 through internet.

If one day I am able to get rid of my phobia on speaking in front of people, I will share my experience on making a living through the internet.

  19. Hi Steven Ng @# 22,

I’m interested to know how you are able to make ‘a living through the internet.’ You could have a sharing session with a small group of interested people, in an informal setting, so there would be no stage fright issue, right?

Ok, hmm… is it on, your sharing?

    Cheers,

  20. Hi Steven

I can see you seldom visit the forum. I’ll try to get a small group. Do you need to have a computer to demo? Is a Sunday afternoon okay with you?

Hmm–hope don’t have to wait almost a month for reply. Just joking!

    HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!

  21. Hi Jassmine,

I’m also interested to know how Steven able to make ‘a living through the internet. Do include me.

Steven, hope to meet you to learn from you.

    Regards,
    Lilian

  22. Hi Steven

This proves that IT skills are relevant n important. Let’s learn from each others. If you do need help to run a class for SHC members, we are ready to render our services as your assistants.

You now have a handful of earger participants. Please don’t disappoint them. They are waiting.

  23. Hi Steven NG,

It was good to know that thwere is another NEW member by the name of Steven. just to say Hi to you.

Happy Ox spicious CNY to your fasmily and u.

  24. Hi Jassmine Teo,

I came upon this comment by chance as I was CURIOUS to know who the new member Steven NG was.

You had been quite active in the forum after picking durians with Terence and others.

At last, my “hanging out” bougainvilleas had flowered after 5 attempts to grow them in different conditions.

Remember those wonderful moments we had at the Saigon Riverboat Dinner and Cruise with Tian Soo,Cheng Pun and Kristine last year.

Happy Ox-spicious CNY to your fasmily and you.

  25. Hi Yew Kwong,

( You appeared today on 938 LIVE, 0810 hrs this morning.)
We are v.PROUD of you as being a representative of SHCians community. Well Done! Keep it up Yew Kwong! Char yu Char yu not Yau char Kwai.

Alamak. Pls inform us earlier. Never mind hope you can ask the broadcast stn to give you a copy of your LIVE interview recording and I am sure Terence would be more than happy to give you the permission for the benefit of all SHcians.

And had it played again during our next SHC gathering. Ok?

It was good to meet again with you and other SHCians at the charity lunch.

Believe it or NOT, as I had discussed with you my IT error on my computer monitor , my BLUE screen monitor of death has suddenly “RESURRECTED” this morning.

How do you explain that in terms of IT ?

I am sure other SHCians would also like to know more abt this BLUE screen of death if they were to encounter in future and know what the message was about and do the necessary which otherwise would be interpreted as another VIRUS/ Worm Attack !

Thanks and looking forward to your comment.
Happy Ox-spicious CNY to your family and you.

  26. Hi StevenC @# 31

Happy Lunar New Year! Glad to know that your bougainvilleas are all blooming. Might go to your corridor to have a look this week if I go to visit some friends living at Blk 307.

If I did go, will give your door a knock and if you’re in, BINGO!.

Are you planning a trip to North Vietnam?

    Hi Lilian ( #26) and Sock cheng,(#27),

Happy Lunar New Year! I’ve noted your interest in Steven Ng’s sharing. Could I have your e-mail? Mine: kdaae2005@hotmail.com.

Happy lunar new year too to all in SHC. Can look forward to no COE payment this year… wow!

  27. Hi Jassmine Teo @ 33,

Well, if you are coming to your friend’s place at Blk 307, mine is Blk 305 , pls. call me 1 day in advance. you may call Kristine Leong along.

Thanks. I had already “spruced” up my garden for CNY.
I had just planted 2 coconut trees at my no man’s land corridor and grow miniature longan/mata kuching plants and dragon fruit “bonsais” from their big / tiny seeds.

It is so refreshing to see them grow healthily day by day.

The mini dragon fruit bonsais looks v. unique.

  28. Hi Charles @ 28

Stock market is not for me lah, sekali kenna burned hor, I got to eat grass or worse still wait no grass I gotta eat sand hahahaha.

Think a more practical approach would be to learn a few skills from Steven Ng ;0)
