PotLuck – Sun, May 17, 2009 Botanic Gardens

It’s been a long long time since our last big Potluck. Well, let’s have one, where we can meet, chat and have a picnic under the romantic sun. Everybody is invited. Simply, bring along a sheet to place on the grass and rest your buttock. Also a cap to shade your face.

Bring some home-cooked food, enough to share among 5 people. I suggest everybody brings along a bottle of ice water or tea or your favourite beer, as this is the heaviest item. For potluck, you can bring rice, noodles, curry, kuehs, desserts or salads. You can also bring along a roast duck, or steamed chicken, but make sure it is chopped into small pieces first. For those who cannot cook, you can bring black rubbish plastic bags, paper cups, plates, ice, forks or spoons or even some fans.

However, if we cannot eat or drink all the things you bring along, I guess you have to bring it home. So, enough for 4-5 people plse. So, come and stroll into the gardens, bring along your dogs, and let’s have a good time, meeting other members.

  • Venue: The Singapore Botanic gardens
  • Date: Sunday, May 17, 2009 Time: 1600 to 1900 hrs.
  • Fee: No charge. This is a public place.
  • Agenda: get together for a picnic, teochews, Hokkiens, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, cantonese, and everybody.

On arrival: Find a cool place and lay your sheet. Put your potluck infront of you and on your sheet. When SHCians walk around, invite them to come to your spot and sample what you have cooked. Remember to bring along your name tag.

We will start a registration list, so you can register what you are bringing along. If you change your mind later, simply notify by writing a comment, and we will change the item.

I believe that at this time, music is provided by SSO, celebrating its 30th birthday. We can listen to a string of familiar classics, while we relax for a picnic in the Palm valley. You may register what you are bringing along now.

I will be there at 6pm. Will bring along some fried Bee Hoon.

  16. SSO will be celebrating their 30th anniversary on this day with a 2hr performance. Do gather near the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage so that you do not miss the performance.

Nor, I won’t be able to come for this event as I will be away. You guys have fun.

Lily, you remember? 2 years ago we were there too. I rember Pheng Sok brought us her freshly baked shepherd’s pie, fork U spoon wrapped up in napkin too. Long time never hear or see her already.

  17. WOW my surname is now correct but alamak hor Sock become Seok…sigh…..I am beginning to think that I am a real mixed-up kid kekekekekek

Neo Sock Cheng aka Sockie, Tan, Ng, Lee Seok Cheng and whatever ;0)

  18. Hi Oi Cheng, You still have clear memories of the last Potluck at the Botanic Gardens. Wonder what happened to Pheng Sok too. I remembered Steven Chan tried the thai grasshoppers and silkworms thems. And, Kenneth brought some Tiramisu desserts which sold out within minutes.

Sockie, I have put back the Sock, not as Seok as I thought. Dont forget the water melon.

And Daisy, the Peranakans are back too.

So everybody, come and join the Potluck, and bring a little something to eat.

    Terence Seah

  19. Hi Terence,

This is a great idea. I’ve been to these SSO concerts @ Botanic before, & it would be great to hve the company of great friends & good food. I will be there, with my picnic basket & wine & cheese, complete with floor mats & sun shields.

  21. Hi Terence,

Please register Francis R Mangalam and Catherine Koh. We will be coming around 6.15pm after our dancing class.

Catherine Koh will try to bring some home-made vegetable delicacy, otherwise some normal tidbits.

I am new to Botanic Gardens. Terence, please give me the exact location to meet other SHC members.

I will be bringing my new camera (Canon IXUS 980 IS) to shoot pictures and videos of the event.

    Francis

  22. I remembered the last potluck venue was the Botanic Gardens, suggested by Oi Cheng. Remember bring along a small bottle of red wine, for yourself and a piece of plastic sheet to place on the grass, so your buttocks wont be wet.

And, Tim, if you are coming, remember too the Johnson duck from Geylang.

And, for the last minute participant, well you are always welcome. But, do let us know you are coming.

    Terence Seah

  23. Since I am unable to attend this as I m still on China work trip but I have couple of plastic sheets to be given away for this purpose. Anyone interested, pls take from me during the monthly gathering on 12 May’09. Cheers… Dolly

  24. Dolly Lim #33

I will be going for Potluck. I will take plastic sheets from you during the monthly gathering on 12th May

    Thanks for your help

    Francis

  25. “I remembered …….Oi Cheng…..bring…… a small…..red …….buttocks……wet”. Haha, Sengh, you can really remember very well despite our age.

“And, Tim, if you are coming, remember too the Johnson duck from Geylang”.

Yes, Johnson used to Lock up his ducks to roast and sell but no more. Impressed and made Aware by the recent commotion, he slaughters ducks no more. Instead, Johnson has, together with all his ducks, joined a very inclusive and secular association and do his rounds in schools quacking the goodnes of certain sexuality type and behaviour.

But no worry, no duck still got chicken. Since you mentioned geylang, ok, I will bring some geylang chicken to the pot-luck but can I dont slaughter and roast them? If I cant, then I will close my eyes and leave you to do what you like………

  26. Hi All,

Since there’s rice & beehoon, I’ll be bringing some mixed vegetables curry (lemak) to go with it. Look forward to sampling all the goodies and catching up with everyone. Lisa Ong

    “Francis @28..
You new to Botanic Garden?.. mean u never been there?..sure not? Maybe u not local?..hhmm”

You are right Norlinda.I have never been there.

You question that I am not local depends upon how you look at. I came to Singapore nearly 19 years ago and got citizenship in course of time.

    Francis

  34. hello terence , so c u 2 morrow huh! plus a bot of unused red wine tat i will pass it 2 u lah….

  35. Rene, thank you for solving the mysterious riddle of Ms R. Can I ask you to bring a little stick with a little flag? I ask you to wave it once in a while, so we can all recognise you and our group.

For all others, come and enjoy the relaxing Sunday late afternoon. The weather report says no rain and no sun. Just come and find a tree or some shade, bring some sunblock and at least a bottle of drinking water.

We all look forward to seeing one another, especially if you are very new.

    Terence Seah

  36. Hi Terence,

Sorry, I have to give this potluck a miss. Last minute urgent matter cropped up.

For those attending, enjoy the food, music and company. I will be drooling =D…

  37. Hi Terence

#30 – food item should read “Chicken & Mushroom One-pot Rice”. There will be no Roast Chkn.

Pl also register Patricia Lim: she’ll bring Fried Bee-hoon.

    Cheers

  38. Hi Terence

Sorry, can’t join all of you now. Instead of jollying jollying with all of you, I’ll have to be mournful on this day. Last chance to show my respects.

    Have fun!

    dAISY

  39. Hi

Lily will not be able to attend this event cos she is too busy with the cleaning & packing of the house after the week of renovation.

    Alicia

By the time u reach BG ..the agar agar will turn into crystal water (ha)

    Karen

  40. No worries, for those who are unable to join us at the Botanic Gardens. Enjoy your bowling or other activity you have in mind.

    Terence Seah

  41. Hi everybody planning to come to the Botanic gardens this Sunday late afternoon.

The skies have not been very dry, in the last one week. Today, it still rains in the afternoon. If for some reason, the rain prevents you from coming, don’t worry. Try dropping a note here on this forum, so that others know if you change your mind.

Hope the skies stay clear then.

    Terence Seah

  42. Terence

Is Lily that cannot attend la… I will be there .

ANyway , Curry Puff Auntie not free on Sunday , so I will think of something to bring tomorrow.

    C U>

    karen

  43. Lisa also extends her apology to Terence and Jie for her absence to attend this Sunday potluck. Thank you… JanetH signing off on behalf of Lisa.

  44. Hi Terence,

Pls count me in if the weather is fine. Shall bring glutinous rice plus dried chillie prawns and some bread to go with.

See all of you tomorrow at 4pm…

    Anne Chee

  45. Gee, the Botanic Gardens was full of people. SHCians make up some 0.75% of the total audience. Sam Goh’s bottle of red wine was finished with the first hour. Facing the stage, we sat on the left slope. Everybody gathered at Palm tree #36. This can be our next meeting point, should we have another potluck at the BG.

Under the guidance of Sockie, we had Karen Theo as the trainee. Both of them have the looks of a photographer. Lina Ng came with a bottle of Choya; she wanted everybody to drink up as she just wanted the plums. As usual, Tim Liu strolled in with his chickens, without the skin, from Geylang.

Surprise altho pleasant pop-ups include Sarah, Grace Wong, Magaret Soo and 2 friends. Ann Giri also popped off from among the other palm trees. Christina WH and June Lim got lost somewhere at the gardens. Francis and Catherine turned up in their Sunday sports wear. Norlinda brought more than a dozen chicken wings. Yew Kwong had a punctured tyre, and so couldnt make it.

The skies threatened us at aout 7.15pm, so we quickly evacuated just before 7.30pm. It started as a warm humid Sunday afternoon, and slowly ending the evening with cool breezes.

    Terence Seah

  46. Hi everyone who had signed up for the pot-luck picnic this evening at Palm Valley,

I went there with my soon kuey just before 5pm, found Palm valley but didn’t meet you all. Where were you all seated?
Instead, met a colleague from work after half an hour and shared the soon kuey with her. I enjoyed the 1hr there and left at 6pm before SSO could start at 6.15pm.

Wondering…..? Does SHC have any special coloured tees or caps that we can wear for easy identification? If not yet, can we adopt lemon/pastel yellow/ pastel green coloured tees or caps? Cap will be cheap and good.

What’s Dolly, Terence and other members’ opinion?

It will make life easier for newbies if we have to meet/find other SHCs in crowded places like this afternoon at the Botanical Garden.

    Geok Suan.

  47. Hi All

Sorry n my apology for not turning up. Hope all of u hv a nice time n lots of fun.

The puncture hd taken much time 2 be fixed n by the time it ws done, the gathering ws over.

  48. Hi Terence#65

Thanks for organising the potluck. I really enjoyed the evening with other SHC members, I had captured some of the moments in my video and I would like to share with other members

  49. My dear “SHC chefs”,
Thanks for the delicious, yummy food prepared by you..
Yesterday was indeed a warm and humid Sunday afternoon..Bottles of drinking water and fans were given out generously to all attendees at the SSO concert.
Wondering at first why “Terence” was the only thorn among the roses…..where the “boys” are then.? haha..

Thanks for a time of fellowship again.
    see u..

  50. Sengh, the one you saw strolling in with some skinless chicken wasnt this tim ah liu but timah hill. What happened was, the geylang fames didnt want to walk so far in so they found some bushes at the entrance, got their job done and assignment completed, and left.

Frankly, I’d prefer a location nearer to the entrance esp when one is lugging so much along. Perhaps, the next rendezvous could be say, macritchie reservoir which is very accessible and a designated meet-place like next to the grass clock can be easily located.

  51. Hi Terence#65

I had captured some of the moments in my camera and I would like to share with other members.

    Have a nice day

    Francis

  52. Hi Guys/Gals,

My sincere apologies for not being able to join in the Potluck at the last minute. Can see that everyone is having a great time and feasting into all the goodies that was brought in. I can see from the U-tube video that everyone was fanning like crazy due to the heat humidity and Kristin munching away and having a good time. Will try and make it at the next meet, come rain or shine. Have a great day everyone, Lisa

  53. Hi Karen,
It was indeed a beautiful song…it was a soundtrack from
“Yi Nan Wan” (the unforgettable memory) shown daily from 4.30pm to 5.30pm channel 8….Thanks for the photos captured. The movie making session was indeed useful/applicable for all the “producers” .

  54. Hi Karen #73,

Thank you for making the youtube video. I was not expecting to be one of your stars, but I must say you are indeed talented.

I would encourage more SHCians to learn new hobby skills, and pick up this knowledge from Karen.

    Terence Seah

  55. Hi All

Karen’s works are remarkable. She started off as one who knows nuts abt I.T. With constant practices n determination, she has superseded even her own expectation that she can really learn n develope her skills in such short time. What she has achieved today is purely her own efforts 2 never give up learn new skills.

  56. Clara Chay

If Terence is the only one in the video , I better don used this song or he will be mistaken I am expressing my LOVE for him (haha) .. Think this song is very well selected for the only Thorn & the Roses of SHC …

    YK

Thanks for the Compliment …is a good try la and must thanks the two Sifu – Ykwong & Chan for the patient given to me.

Terence – At least those who has not meet u , know who is the founder of SHC – Terence Seah

    karen

  57. Clara, I am not sure whether yr “Yi Nan Wan” is the same original “Yi Nan Wan” in the 70s starring Zhang Mei Yiow and Ke Jun Hsiung?

I was then in pre-U 1 and sitting next to me in my class was this gaygay who asked me to join him for a movie.

For the first time in my life, I cried in a movie hall. Yes it was a champion tear-jerker and the theme song was fabulous and summed up the love and tragedy in the plot. It might have started my peference to choose Mandarin songs over the casa bangla type of songs.

  58. I did not take note of the names of the singers…but it was in series , shown Mon – Friday . There are pretty and handsome faces here hehe..Im not familar with mandarin songs but i do like listening to some like this one too..My preference will be “Casa blanca” types..oopposite of yours
    :)

  59. Tim/Clara

Tim mentioned the song/movie is long long time ago and is in mandarin ..the one Clara mentioned is a Taiwanese long loso series – all housewife & Auntie show..

My mom make sure she is back on time tow watch the show and the song used by me in the movie is a hokkien song …

The sing name ..Siow Hu (if I am not wrong)

    karen

  60. Tim,
Haha,it must be an unforgettable and memorable day huh? My first show in cinema with my mum was at Tiong Bahru “Fu Xin The Ren” hehe..

  61. Pretty and handsome faces wont get old, age and eventually wrinkled meh? Remind sme of Lily Ho who was said to have her facial skin pulled all the way till her mouth was only an inch above her navel.

Ooops, typo, sorry, it was Lily Hua.

Casablanca is an ang moh song…….one doesnt sing ang moh song with those genuine, nice and simple folks from Bangladesh who are trying to blend in here. I joined them to make them feel at home, and wd have continued to do so but for this wang that’s really very yinan.

  62. Hi Karen #73

Thanks for the Golden Horse Award Movie. Impressive!
Looks like I have to start picking up this skills for my mid-life career.

    Terence #75
Director Thio made you become the 1970’s heartthrob and your fans were very well behave ya!

    Well done!

Cheers to all beauties and the lady man for a good fellowship on Sunday afternoon.
    Rene

  63. Yes, Karen, you’re correct that the original singer is Chai Siow Hu or Chua Sio Hor who is popular and has a huge following among the hokien aspirants.

Clara, ‘Fu Xin The Ren” arguably catapulted Yiow Su Rong to fame. I like her very unique style, angkat tarek at ease, and epitomised in her “Lang Bien Liao”. Sadly, she faded away.

Rene, what skill you wanna pick up as yr mid-life career…..breeding and feeding golden horses or a syce? Aiyah, might as well go “tiu kam kuai” i.e. fish for golden tortoise and who knows you might land a samurai turtle?

  64. Dear Karen,

Nice shot at video production accompanied by hokkien song (Sengh’s favourite?haha) A little more tweaking and it would look like a professional piece. Looks like Terence is the main star and the ‘calefes’ are the beauties of SHC…..

Hope to learn some handicrafts from you one day as soon as I can learn to sit down patiently..hehe..

  65. Hi Catherine

Hahahaa………love your ‘calefes’……at first, I was wondering how to pronounce this word and in what language/dialect, then it struck me as ‘extras’ in cantonese!!

Lots of HK cantonese speakers in this club.

  66. So much gushings, I had to view Karen’s video. Couldn’t view from office bec of the firewall. Reached home, quickly zoom to PC.
    Wow …3 claps for Karen…:-))

  68. Rene, 2 Chinese words are incorrect…….”?” in “??” and “?” i “??’ but not yr fault as they do sound the same as the correct words in pinyin. Since I dunno how to access the Chinese font, can only use words from the same passage you put up for my re-write below which honours The Return….

    ???, ?????, ??????, ???????.

    ?????, ???????,

    ?????, ????, ??????,

    ?????.

It is not the fault of the sound but definitely the fault of my eyesight after working till late morning 2am since last Wednesday 10 June till Sunday when I was looking at the chinese font. As usual, ???? be it Chinese or English.

  70. Rene, one last re-write of your “??????????? ??????.???????????, ??????????????.” take on tortoise. Here it goes…

    ??????, ??????
    ????, ?????,
    ?????????

    ????…..?……?……
    ??????,.??
    ????.

    ???, ????
    ??, ??????
    ????????.
