Your proposal of a dinner gathering is great!

May I suggest that this casual party is organised exclusively for all “soo kee nan” and their spouses so that we may have more time to interact with our countrymen, and brush up our dialect speaking. In fact, this is the view and suggestion of quite a number of members, which was disclosed but not posted after the last lunch gathering at Purvis Street.

Let’s not be mistaken, we don’t segregate but gladly welcome “non soo kee nan” to our next common lunch/dinner fellowship during the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year or other occasions. Of course, it is the prerogative of the EOs and committee to accept or decline the suggestion.

I will be pleased to attend the forthcoming dinner party at Mariner’s Corner.
    Regards
    Frank

  2. Hi Frank,

Thank you for the suggestion and support, as of now I think it better to open up to all member.

To all who are still contemplating I would like to assure you that Joy and I how been to both outlets, the other outlet is in Novena and has a smaller seating capacity. It is known as the Vine Restaurant. The ambience is good and cosy. Carpark at Mariner’s Corner is free subject to availability!

    Dan

  3. Hi Dan,

Please include me in the dinner at Mariner’s corner. Thank you

    Hi Frank Kaw #1

Many months ago I read a post by you on a company making
10 millions a year and want to sell off (rock stock and barrel)at one million. Good buy !! And I met you at the first soo kee lunch at Purvis St which I attended as a newbie SHCian.

How have you been? my soo kee nan -the corporate raider ?

    Lee patrick

  4. Well, for some untold reasons, yen-tow Patrick-L asked to be included “in the dinner”, not for the dinner or that he’s going to the dinner. Not easy for Dan but I think he will try to make it happen.

Presently, in the menu there’s Hainanese braissed ox tail. Add value to this dish and it’s Braised ox’s tail with peppered Song Juan’s sausage but if folkss prefer one extra dish, then SJ sausage roll or let SJ roll his sausage can be considered.

Or put him under the table where a hole opens in the middle for his head to pop out next to a hammer….and the famous Imperial dish that boosts brain power is ready to be served. Slurp slurp. He-he………………

  5. Hi Tim #4
After your ‘yen-tow'( meaning handsome in hokkien)
comment. I seriously look into the mirror just and oh my god! it cracked and a splinter stucked my lovely face.
No more ‘yen-tow’ now. See, you did me the injustice.
My SJ sausage is intact luckily, haha !

I always love to read your posting. Your bionic brain is
quick on composing the abstract and for me is always amusing
though innuendoes may subdue the laughters of some. No me.

So, TimL welcome to the jokes and laughter club of SHC under
Sylvia Ang. And due to it, I will be attending the coming
monthly Han’s gathering. I have never attended any yet. LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE. See the power Laughter and Jokes can move a person not the beauties like “Yang Kwei Fei”.
I will tell you the “ee liu”(meaning number one)joke that day.

“Ee chiang choon siu siang tong liu”. Hahaha!

I am a natural joker lah ! But second to you. Always like to wear hat, but will take it off for you.

  6. TimL

Forgot to tell you, I am a true blue soo kee nan, though I look Eurasian with high bridge and yen-tow. That is why I attending the Soo Kee dinner to mingle with the ‘mia kia’
the ‘Ah linn’ and ‘Ah tok’ and all the’hai nan kor’

  7. Thank you Patrick-L.

“Always like to wear hat, but will take it off for you”.

No, do leave yr hat on yr head, anything else you can take off. And when the bollywood music is played, show us what Don Juan can do with yr his twinkle toes as he twists his nose. Hehe, Sockie & Kareen are already standby with the cameras and Eileen-T, Paul Kong with their video cams.

“I seriously look into the mirror and oh my god! it cracked………. I look Eurasian with high bridge and yen-tow”.

Indeed you’re and for this reason, I gripe abt the almighty’s unfairness in giving you such good looks that can crack mirror and me, such ugly looks that dont need any mirror.

Btw, I have not been feeling so good for a long time….. maybe it’s a timely National Birthday present to me, the reward of keeping faith in my Pledge and keeping my wow in a vow?

  8. Hi Dan

Please include me for this dinner. This time round I will make sure that I am there before dinner starts and not towards end of lunch for our last gathering.

    Thanks & Regards
    Helen

  9. Patrick Lee #02
Soo kee, I think you misread my offer. The asking price, subject to reconfirmation, is S$4.0million including S$1.0million company shares.

I’ll give more details if you have a genuine buyer for the company.

Life is fine with me enjoying every minute of my retirement.

I’ll see you at the 11 Sept dinner at Mariner’s Corner.
    Regards
    Frank

  10. Soo Kee Frank,

Your high profile corporate dealings remind me of the movies
“Pretty Woman” when Richard Gere hooked on Julia Roberts the sophisticated hooker and live happily ever after. Any similarity in you as a corporate raider, hahahaaa!

  11. Hi

This event is open to all people who eat.

It is common knowledge that when the Hainanese first came to this part of the world, many of the men became sailors and cooks on European ships or in colonial households. As such, the Hainanese are (or maybe, were, as some have become property agents, corporate raiders and me, corporate slave) well-known for their culinary skills in whipping up Western dishes like oxtail soup, beef stew, pork chop, etc.

We have the opportunity to savour some of these classic dishes at Mariners’ Corner and we hope it will be a delightful experience for all.

    Joy

  12. Hi Dan,

Please include me for the dinner. I am looking forward to meeting all the soo kee Ah kor and ah mai and all who enjoy a good meal with good company.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

  13. Dear Ah Kors

Interesting to read that Ah Kors are sparring on looks and whatever on this Hainanese post. I am so exciting to see the Hainanese version of Richard Gere and George Clooney. Is it Frank, Andrew, Boon Liang or Patrick khor ???

    Regards
    Helen

  14. Hi HelenW #15

    How time flies.
I remember vividly your presence the last ‘soo kee’ lunch at Purvis Street. Helen (of Troy) launched a thousand ships and forgot to be on one of them, hence was so late that she missed the nice lunch when her ship arrived in port.

If you need any handsome Ah Kors to escort you to the dinner at Mariner Corner, just raise your hand and the Ah Kor (Rod Taylor alias Boon Liang) will launch not ship but himself to guide you to Mariner corner. You will never be late for dinner for sure. Rod, just serenade your sentimental evergreen into Helen’s ears on the way…Hahaha!

So no excuse to be late again huh!

    LeePatrick

  15. Hi Patrick Lee, Boon Liang, Helen Wong and Andrew Koh

Thanks for your interest and support. Where is everybody else? Nobody eats on Fridays?

    Dan

  16. There is growing apprehension whether this event cater for soo kee nan. Let’s me assure all that it is not and all member are most welcome to join.

Mariner’s Corner is run by hainanese folks and the boss Raymond and I have known each other for a long while. We even attended a Shatec course together. The chef William is also a close friend whom I have occasion to travel to Hainan to visit our home town. I have been associated with food outlets during certain course of my life. Once I even stayed in Sydney for a six months stretch and work in Jack’s Place for three months as a waiter! There was also a spell of one and a half year I work as a Coffee House Supervisor in the Metro Y Cafe. My late father was once the OC for the School for army catering and known by the nickname ‘Captain Cook’ for the rank he also hold.

We Hainanese would like to play host to all who attend and assure you the we are enJoying fine dining at a very affordable price. I am sure some of you appreciate fine wine and that what we gonna do and drink it up to health and longevity!

There is still room for more, come lah!

    Dan & Joy

  17. Hi Patrick Khor #16

Thanks for your response. Come to think of it you are relatively right about my punctuality at social event as I am always working on very tight schedule. This 2nd gathering, I will make sure that I push myself out of the door at 6.00 pm sharp from office. Believe you are referring to Boon Liang as SHC Rod Stewart ya.

So who is Richard Gere and George Clooney in SHC (must be “lau swee” – old ham ya.

    Regards
    Helen

  18. Aiyoh! Mai Helen.

See, even reply took 3 days. How to launch another 1000 ship
leh! If some one is waiting for a romantic proposal reponse,
The lapse of three days silence, will shatter a broken heart you know. Haha! May commit sucide “tai bo”

Well, Richard Gere is Ah Kor lah (the Don Juan)!. TimL qualifies as George Clooney (dark and handsome) Sorry Boon Liang is our SHC Rod Stewart not Taylor. “Bei Teh lau lah”
(old man already) cannot remember Kor Kia, only remember Mia Kia. “Shiang Shiang leh” (beautiful ladies)

Literal translation: Most old men (not only Hainanese old man) like beautiful young chicks (girls). who won’t if you are a virile old man !! HAHAHAAAA. Just joking lah!!
(Bringing laughter and jokes to de-stress our life)

  19. Hi Danz,

Since you have such extensive connections with this restaurant, I am sure you will pull the right strings for a good meal.

My goodness, your ‘resume’ is certainly impressive, you know the Owner, the Chef is your long-time ‘Good Friend’ and your own ‘Dad’ use to mentor them and other significant personalities in the Hainanese culinary community!!! What more can anyone ask? Why no ice cream for dessert???

Please register Tian Soo and myself for the evening.

We are 2 ‘honorary’ ‘soo kee nan’ and we can speak some ‘bobat-ti’

Look forward to a ‘gran cru’ dinner. Make sure the waiters wear spotless white and have someone ready to open the doors for SHC members when they make their grand entrance.

Is the SHC big boss in town? If T Seah comes, make sure they make the appropriate ‘3 kowtows’ to the right person.

    Cheers till then.

  20. Hi Catherine Yeo,

Glad to know that you appreciate fine dining and wining, see you.

Charles Chua and Tian Soo, welcome to the soo kee fellowship, we will have a rousy time together! Not sure whether Terence will be in town, certainly good if he can come. No ice-cream but blueberries cheese cake is included.

  29. Dan and Joy

The dinner at Mariner’s Corner was very enjoyable. The tenderloin was delicious. So was the profiterole that we had for dessert, after some persuasion from moi, to replace the apple pie with something better, hee.

Thank you both for organising it. It was great catching up with everyone and meeting some new faces.

  30. We have full attendance at the 1st Wine n Dine. Certainly glad that all of you enJoyed yourselves. Tian Soo and Mary, thank for the positive feedback! This is a first that we have not asked for pre-payment, we are glad that those who indicated to come, came.

Charles Chua, the tenderloin was too tempting, I like it ‘medium rare’ but dun tell anyone it not the food that my blood type recommended!

Shall we plan for a 2nd Wine & Dine?

    Danz4Joy

  31. Hi Dan/Joy,

Thanks for organising this event, food was good and the evening was enjoyable ……

yes, we shall have more Wine and Dine becos I believe live to eat…. of course more dancing after eating to take away some pounds… hehehe

    Regards.

  32. Yes Jane, what is Wine & Dine without Dance! Thanks to Charles we were privilege to adjourn to SGCC for further wine and dance and being entertained by Matthew & The Mandarin way past midnight.

Guess we have only one life, let’s take the opportunity to enJoy while we able. The days of roses and wine, women and song may be over but there’s always wine, dine and dancing into the sunset!
