Remember “ Rome is not built in a day.”

Tips:

  1. 1)The main principle  in this exercise regime is to BREATH OUT whenever you exert and BREATHE IN when you relax.

  2. It is utmost important to execute the exercise with the correct bodily movements and  NOT to over exert oneself as it can cause internal bodily harm. And never rush to complete the exercise.

  3. A simple understanding of the Human Anatomy will be useful and also pls.note carefully which gym equipment exercise is meant to train up which particular group of muscles in our body.

  4. For those who are overweight,it is best to do more repetitions of the same exercise with lighter weights in order to “burn” off the extra calories and vice versa for those who are underweight.

About Steven Chan

I am a retired MOE teacher who has taught for 26 years in several secondary schools. I am now looking into private flexi tuition and love traveling to other undeveloped countries like Vietnam , Laos or Cambodia before they become too progressive and lost most of its old charm. I love to cycle, swim or walk or sometimes go to the gym. Gardening is my passion and I took Botany as one of my major subjects Lately, I have learnt to cook from my nephew and I like to cook because I can customised my cooking to whatever taste that I like to eat. My favourites are Thai green curry beef/chicken, Thai mango / durian glutinous rice dessert , fried Xiao Bai Chai , China variety ) which is more crunchy than the local or M'sian variety, steamed sweet and sour pork ribs. Fried Japanese udon and Jap Raw Salmon with a touch of wasabe and lemon juice and Teriyaki and Kokiyaku jelly dessert and Bak kut teh and fried thread fish and steam crabs and stir fried frog legs or beef with dried red chilli and "choong". why? I can save more money instead of eating outside. And the money saved, I used to buy more expensive ingredients and herbs and that results in a more healthy diet because I can regulate the amount of salt ,sugar or Aji No Moto to my cooking. And select herbs which promotes longevity of life like the goji berries and Broccoli which is anti -cancer and helps to boost our immune system.

#The sole purpose of body building is to enhance our Fitness Level ;to improve our poise and confidence.

I totally agree with you for the above sentence but pity that the timing is not right for me as I have not retired yet, still working...................

    Do keep fit!

  4. Hi Nancy Major Tan,

timing is not right for me as I have not retired yet, still working……………….

Not to worry be happy :) , you too can choose to retire 1 fine day.

Do keep fit! ( Thanks )

  5. Hi Nancy,

    1) Despite having retired since 2006, I dreamt yesterday that I was "STILL" teaching in school and giving Science lessons to my students. Strangely indeed!

My mind still refuse to accept the fact that I had retired.
    Must learn to let more!

    2) Out of 3 main questions in Practical Chemistry in my final UOL exams, due to time constrain I managed to do only 2 and 1/3 questns and I told myself this time sure kena
FAIL but finally and luckily I managed to pass.

On several occasions throut the years ,I still dreamt of taking the same practical Chem UOL exams and those 2/3 part which I had NOT done,I dreamt that I was going thru it and conducting the exams.

Strangely enough! The mind STILL refuses to LET GO and continues to replay the past scenario. :( Sometimes, i woke up sweating over. Must be the unpleasant trauma of the EXAM STRESSES that I had went thru.

Anyone of you with similar exp , pls. share yr comments.

  7. Hi Steven,

Thank you for sharing your past scenerios when you had your Chemistry exams.I am sure you were very stressed during that point of time, so sorry to hear about that, I undestand how you feel. I have the same experience too where I need to go through 23 modules with assignment date lines and exams on every module, it was stressful because I took up the course at the age of 50 and the subjects that I took is totally different from what I was doing. (I was doing business and now teaching).

The fact that you still dreamt that as if you are still teaching, that is not healthy, have you ever thought of doing some part time job like tuition? I am scared about retirement, too as I have been working since the age of 17 till now, all my children are graduated from the university and I don't have to work any more but no way to retire yet as I have seen business friends and my own secondary school teacher who retired early, some pass on quite early and some become senile, so sad.

  8. Hi Nancy at # 8,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Appreciated. :)
.....have you ever thought of doing some part time job like tuition?

Yes. I am doing part-time tutoring with some Pri and Sec students . Esp.now is a peak period at the end of the yr final PSLE and GCE O exams, "excited" parents too request for extra tutoring as much as 3 times/week.

I get to help them in their studies and also that I have now have more "flexi" time to gym, swim ,cycle or cook as I prefer enjoying myself eating more home cooked meals which are more healthy and gave me more energy as compared to the "chap farn" or other food outside.

If I can afford the time I will cook rather than "ta pau".

...(I was doing business and now teaching).
What school and subjects are you teaching now?

I have seen business friends and my own secondary school teacher who retired early, some pass on quite early and some become senile, so sad. :(

That is why I took part time tutoring to pass my time wisely so as to keep myself mentally ALERT rather than spent most of the time glued to the TV,kay poh kay poh and computer.

For those who had retired; it is good if you could spentd some time on Sudoku challenging number games that will stimulate yr brain thinking power! otherwise will end up senile, worse still suffering from premature dementia or lastly ended up as otak babi. Ha! Ha!

  9. Hi Tim Liu,

.....Steven, fun gau si fun gau, lum yeh si lum yeh, fun gau si lum yeh, gau dou tin fun dei fook, kum lok huoi, lei ng chi sin dou nan lor…………

Lei tai lor orr, tin dit lok lei dong bei kum, yak gau tin kong, gor lo bo chi cheng seng, kum chou ng wui fatt tin.

    Si har leh.

    Sounds ALIEN to me.
I had great difficulty deciphering your Da Vinci Code and still did not get its meaning.

Can you pls. translate for others and me ?
    Thanks

  10. Hi Steven,

Hahahhaaa.......knew you would not be able to 'decipher' let alone understand what Tim meant.

Took me a few times of reading to fully comprehend. Still know how he talks......kekekekeee.

  11. Hi Nancy,

.....I undestand how you feel. I have the same experience too where I need to go through 23 modules with assignment date lines and exams on every module, it was stressful because I took up the course at the age of 50 ???

and the subjects that I took is totally different from what I was doing. (I was doing business and now teaching).

Poor thing! When I did my Dip .Ed. many moons ago at the old Paterson Road teacher's college I had only 3 main modules and quite reasonable datelines. The Dip.Ed.teaching course now must be getting more and more ambitious and "stretching" the poor trainees like you 23 instead of modules.

No wonder school teachers nowadays are getting more and more STRESSED and need to multitask with so many roles at hand as an educator, counselor,"surrogate" parent, CCA etc.....

  12. Hi Geraldine Ting,

Took me a few times of reading to fully comprehend. Still know how he talks……kekekekeee.

At least you know what Tim is talking about and how to reply. As for my pun tong siu Cantonese , I am lost.

Sometimes, beware Tim's sit wa yau hoe tor kuat with a lot of hidden meanings and kan say yan.( choke people to death! ) Ha! ha! :)

Many yrs.ago my neighbour, a regular customer use to ask for 2 pieces of small pork bones for her dog. And the butcher told her whether her dog was BLACK in colour ???

She was "stunned" by his answer he said that her dog was black when the actual colour of her dog was white.

As she walked home, she felt she had been teased by the butcher.

BLACK in Canton is Hak Sik but it can have a different meaning. Hak Sik can also mean that her dog was begging for the bone.

Just like when one pronounce the word Hai
    normal tone means shoe
    lower tone yes
higher tone means " XY " sexual part.

Such is the beauty of the Cantonese dialect. And that was I enjoy HK TVB Canton dramas.

  13. Ok, Steven this is what my "fun gau si fun gau, lum yeh si lum yeh, fun gau si lum yeh, gau dou tin fun dei fook, kum lok huoi, lei ng chi sin dou nan lor…………Lei tai lor orr, tin dit lok lei dong bei kum, yak gau tin kong, gor lo bo chi cheng seng, kum chou ng wui fatt tin" literally means.

Sleep time, sleep. Think time, think. Sleep time, think will cause the sky to topple and the earth turn. (If you) carry on like this, dont go crazy also difficult....Yr bro me, if the sky falls will treat it as a blanket, one sleep into the morning (and so) maintain a sober mind, like this, you wont go crazy.

If you remove the "u" in the "pun tong siu" Cantonese you say of yrself then I think you're closer to coming clean. yeah?

Finally, you make a lot of funny sounds with the word "hai". Doesnt the so called higher tone mean "hello" unless when you greet a gal, you automatically have snthg else in mind and eveen then, she probably wont know that you're so audacious to want it straightaway..........

  14. Hi all,

Osteoporosis( a disease associated with gradual loss of bone mass will eventually lead to an increase risk of fracture ) strike men and wommen , young and old but more commonly associated with women. Andropause, the counterpart of menopause is responsible for the accelerated rate of bone loss as a result of lowered testosterone levels in men.

For those bet 30 and 60yrs., we must maintain our bone stock. It's like growing a plant, nurture it to its max and later nourish it.

And so to attain a good foundation of bone health ,both men and women should take part in Weight Lifting in the gym, brisk walking, dancing or step aerobics. An adequate intake of Calcium and Vit D is also essential to good bone development and maintains good bone health.

So folks, join me if you can and reduce your chances of osteoporosis. You have nothing to lose but so much more to gain; feeling more energetic and refreshing too.

For those who wants to know more abt osteoporosis, pls. click the link below.

  15. Hi Tim,

    V. good you are back to your "Normal" mode and keep going that way rather than to hibernate for so long.

....If you remove the “u” in the “pun tong siu” Cantonese you say of yrself then I think you’re closer to coming clean. yeah?

Lea Lin Mo Chai , Ho Chork Kwai. :)

  16. Steven-C, your "Lea Lin Mo Chai....." is as if you are biting and in fits when you say it but I know what you mean......."you curly hair kid".

Not seen as much doesnt mean I am in hibernation. In some throes but shd emerge stringer for my goos....Guess what this means to you in cantonese : "tin yiok yau cheng, tin yek lo" and "cheng si hor merk, pin kiu sai yan wai ta fun lo?".

Mang mang lum hor. Lum ng dim, hor yi cheng kau jellyting wak che ivy, koi dei lueng kor dou hai lek lui, yat tei chou ji.

  17. Hahahaha Tim,

Good grief!! Poor Steven will be more stressed trying yet again to decipher...........lum gek toh lum ng dim. Yaam kung.

I am trying to imagine him biting and in fits when he said 'lea lin mo chai'. Thanks for the translation as he had lost me. Now I know what he said.

Also, I think jellyting means me? If so, kekekkekeee......

  18. Hi Tim,

...Lum ng dim, hor yi cheng kau jellyting wak che ivy, koi dei lueng kor dou hai lek lui, yat tei chou ji.??????

    Alamak! I give up!

Tim, Lin Moe Chai Hole Tor Gai. :)

  19. Hi Norlinda ,

tin yiok yau cheng, tin yek lo” and “cheng si hor merk, pin kiu sai yan wai ta fun lo?”.

Tolong tolong ! Apa dia chakap? ???

  20. Hi Steven @# 9

You mentioned sudoku - any tips on how to solve the number puzzle? Is there a recurring pattern in the number arrangement that could provide clues to the missing numbers?

I've done a few simple sudoku puzzles, always by trial and error.

    Cheers,

  21. Hi Jassmine,

...any tips on how to solve the number puzzle? Is there a recurring pattern in the number arrangement that could provide clues to the missing numbers?

No . Each Sudoku puzzle has its own unique pattern. And as long you follow the S. rules , you shd be able to solve it but it takes time to crack it.

  22. Steven@21...

Apa macam!...saya orang melayu la..bukan saorang Canto...
what on earth that means ah?...kepala sakit le!

Let me agak2...kau jellyting means you Geraldine?,,,bcos 'kau' means you in malay..
'wak che ivy' means 'awak cek Ivy;'..
aiya banyak susah all distorted & rojak!..haha

Geraldine & Ivy,,,sori, created story just to make Steven smile!

  23. steven chan on being a Gym Instructor.

My last laugh. HAHAHAHAHAAA! Searching for Gym buddies in your post speaks tons when there is not even one taker. Ooooops!

How sad. Want to train people in the gym with your physique and be intructor! The mirror, the mirror.

Sorry GYM INSTRUCTOR! YOU WANT TO ACT LIKE A CHILD IN THE FOLD OF YOUR MUM (G.TING, my wild 'mai'). I will just entertain you for the fun of it. Otherwise you may go to the library and snore away. Do you still do that steven chan??

This will be my last response to your frivolity. I have better things to do. Thank you.

  24. Patrick,
I think u r being 2 rude 2 say post such a comment here. U shd not even said this at all if this is the type of last response dat u are hitting at. We can always 2 choose to agree to disagree here.

I think dat Steven is just looking for frens 2 join him in gym exercise, is there anything wrong here, I dont see any. If you cant join, den so be it. Give sum tot abt tis.. Dolly

  25. Hi Leepat,

    My Lum peh peh friend,
I think Patrick Lee has a "shallow" mind.

Want to joke with our ex-Miss Singapore but with different wavelength with her ; KENA HATAM balek and suddenly MIA for some time. Action speaks louder than words.

Yes, Dolly. Looking for many friends to train is a win-win situation for our own health benefits and we can exchange many techniques to fine tune our training and it requires discipline to go to the gym to FOCUS on what you are doing and not like Leepat " Kong Doe Kai Tiong Nge Thiun in Canto dialect ( Mulut Murai ). Tak boleh tahan !

(No wonder he is born in the yr.of the cockerel.)
Ketok! ketok! all the time as if he is going to lay eggs.

    Ok. Leepat case is CLOSED.

  26. Patrick Lee

It's totally unkind of you to make fun of a person the way you did.

I may have my differences with Steven Chan but at least he made an effort to put up a post and offered his 'services'.

Have you chalked up a fraction of what he has done in SHC?

So far, most of your comments have been either making fun of people or passing uncalled for remarks.

I thought you had learnt your lesson after that episode when you "KENA HATAM balek and suddenly MIA for some time", to use Steven's words.

So, cease and desist! Be productive.

  27. #27 Steven Chan,

What's past is past. We must be gracious enough to forgive and forget. Of course, if Patrick starts his nonsense with me again, then I'll tell him off but it's best for our health not to hold grudges. I have no problems with him...to date. *Stares hard at Patrick*

In fact, at the Flea Mart we bypassed each other and he spontaneously greeted me first. I responded and for that I just learnt that the world is made up of different kinds of characters.

To me, you're a nice guy, Steven.

    Cheers!

    Ros

  28. Correction:-

I didn't 'just learnt that the world is made up of different kinds of characters'... ooops. What I meant was it was an awakening, a reminder to me.

    Ros

  29. PATRICK LEE,

You are standing on very thin ice.

I totally resent this 'Sorry GYM INSTRUCTOR! YOU WANT TO ACT LIKE A CHILD IN THE FOLD OF YOUR MUM (G.TING, my wild ‘mai’).

Do not get on my nerves again. BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU MOUTH-OFF FROM NOW ON.

  30. Just came back from lunch with an important friend and walau
the post is really active with each and other's opinion and say. Everyone is subjected to have his/her says.

mary chan - "If I am somebody" in one of the nightclub post you said you would not join SHC and be with all the Old poor man in SHC. So why are you still here than. Get real OK!

dolly lim -you are subjected to your opinion. Do you know what is 'lum peh peh'. stevenchan mimic G-thing mia to attack me without any foundation. "Lum peh peh" means your precious thing underneath cannot stand anymore. I took it with a pinch of salt. We know ourselves.

Gerald thing - my whole life I am standing on thin ice. Nothing is too insulting that I cannot swallow. You did write on one post about me barking. So what you think, who is barking.

stevenchan -do not hide under a skirt. If you can mouth people for no reason, be prepared to face it.

I face up to anything in my life. I rest my case and will not post on the website anymore except for participating in events. Instead I will write more one my Blog. I stand on firm ground. Let us not go beyond our realms of make-belief.

The coin has two sides. We eat our own cake. Never try to be what you are not to be. Thank You

    lee patrick song juan

  31. Good riddance to bad rubbish........go bark somewhere else. So much toxins from one miserable person.

  32. Hi Patrick Lee,

For someone who claimed he has practised meditation for many yrs is hard to believe and I do really have doubts abt that person.

A real experienced meditator for many yrs. is one who has a
CALM , TOLERANT and PEACEFUL MIND ; Are you ? :(

  33. Patrick Lee #32

I quote what you wrote about me.

"mary chan - “If I am somebody” in one of the nightclub post you said you would not join SHC and be with all the Old poor man in SHC. So why are you still here than. Get real OK!"

Where in the world did I ever make that comment??? Do not put words in my mouth! You could be sued for less!

You sound like a demented old man who insists on writing a lot of acidic rubbish about people you hardly know.
Is that what you learnt from your supposed yoga training??

Ask yourself. Why are you here in the first place? SHC is a platform for making friends, not for making rude unintelligible, unfounded remarks about it's members.

When you laugh at someone for not getting any response to his or her post, YOU ARE IN EFFECT DISCOURAGING anyone, especially the new members, who has any intention of starting another post about any activity. PEOPLE NEED ENCOURAGEMENT NOT RIDICULE.

Looks like you have aged but you haven't grown up. Or perhaps you are approaching dementia, misquoting me like that?
If it is dementia, then you have my sympathy. If it is just a cracko shooting off his mouth for having nothing better to do, then you deserve all the bullets you are getting.

Btw, Steven Chan is not 'hiding under' my skirt. I'm not championing him. I'm speaking my own mind as I do not like characters like you.

    Geraldine Ting is absolutely right.
"So much toxins from one miserable person."

    I repeat, cease and desist.

  34. Patrick Lee and Steven Chan

If the two of you wish to insult each other about your manhood or what not, kindly do it by private emails.

Do not soil this website with your sordid remarks about each other.
We do not relish reading them. We prefer to make friends here and read more pleasant stuff.

  35. marychan dont talk crap with me OK ! This is what you wrote at #60 "Remember the carbaret days and nightout at the nightclub": "would I be here at SHC, mingling with ordinary peope like myself and tolerating peniless old men."

Go ahead, sue me I am waiting.

Don't think your are somebody. Get real OK! and don't always think everyone will take your nonsense. No me.

Who do you think you are in SHC? Everyone you criticise and
scold. Since I joined SHC I heard many stories on that.

    LEE PATRICK S JUAN

  36. I just got off the plane, and was about to have a nice dinner until I read the last few comments.

On this thread, I think the discussion has gone off tangent and viscious. I guess you have said enough. Please stop immediately any further attacks.

If you put any more wood on this fire, I will likely lower your access to this forum to "guest" level for one year immediately.

    Terence Seah

  37. Terence Seah #38
You did not address your comment to anyone.

I will respect your request if the comment at #38 was meant for me, but I hope it wasn't.

I just got so sick and tired of all the rude remarks that I had to say something.

  38. Hi Dan Huang,

No point blaming yourself for yr recent knee injury. As Silverhairs we ought to be more careful nowadays as our bones are getting "brittle" day by day.

( My suggestion but u may beg to differ )
Even when you had recovered from yr injury, badminton is still not wise for you to play. As the moves are often fast and sudden bringing even more friction and damage to yr knee cap and ligaments. We are no longer at our prime youth days when we can sustain injury and recovered fast.

Even at the gym, the chances of injury to one self will even be greater than badminton if you are not aware of the correct ways of carrying weights.

Whatever it is, it is time to take in supplements as glucosamine ,
Nu Zea Calcium ( the recently marketed New Zealand product which has the best source of calcium from deer antlers for absorption to our system and to develop stronger bones.)

My pitiful ex- colleague was even worse. Due to his severe diabetic condition ,his leg has been "chopped" off 1/3 of its length.

    Take good care my friend,
    Steven Chan
