Charity Visit Scheduled on 16 Oct’09

Hi Fellow SHCs,
After much discussions, we had planned the visit to the Orphanage Home (if time permits, will go 2 homes for this visit) on 16 October 2009 arriving SG to JB early morning to avoid traffic jam either by cars or bus much depended on how many car owners are willing to drive in together with us.  If not, we will charter a bus (cost to be shared equally among those going for this event).
These details of these 2 homes are follows:
1)      Care @ Haven, 2 Jalan Tembusu, 20 Taman Rinting 81750, Masai Johor,  website www.carehaven.org.my
2)      Love Foundation Home for the handicapped children, 40 & 40A Jalan Sultanah Rogoyah, Taman Iskandar 80050, Johor Baru, Johor, website www.pkiijb.org.my
For these 2 homes, I get to know them was when I was doing a 2 full day charity work thru’ ‘Ome Toh Fu’ at Kulai Malaysia few couple years ago and it was there that I came in contact with another charity worker whom told me abt these 2 homes run by ‘Ya Soh’ association.  Since then, hv been helping out as and when time permitted till today.

Collections of toys and clothings will be given to these 2 homes much depending how much can we bring to them, i.e. via cars or coach.

Cash donations can be chanelled Lum Oi Cheng, POSB Saving Acct 117-00132-6 before 14 October’09.

  1. During our visit, I find that at Care Haven (we had only visited the girls quarter of Care Haven), the children are well disciplined, well-mannered and chatty except for a few. They have a chance to Home education, proper beds, care and love from their caregivers, and also each other for support. Here, I could chat, play, hug and carry the very young ones too.

On entering Love Foundation Home, I saw 3 baby cots and in each cot, lies a sick child. On the floor, nearby, a teen was sleeping and further in, another young boy was lying on a mattress. There is a slight urine smell in this place. At a corner, a pile of mattresses looked old and dirty. When night comes, these same mattresses will be laid on the floor for them to sleep on. The sight of all these made me feel helpless.

From observation, I feel items like stationery, story books, toys, toiletries and basic food stuff like Milo, milk, rice, etc., would be useful for Care Haven.

As for Love Foundation Home, toiletries, food stuff as above and mattresses to replace some of those currently in use.

I did not mention clothes as I feel there may not be a shortage in these, It is the everyday needs that are most needed. Note that this is only my personal observation.

I have uploaded the photos of the two Homes. Though we tried as far as possible not to capture the faces, but sometimes, this is unavoidable.

Sam, I have amended the link to Love Foundation Home in the post.

  2. Huat Huat Huat,

I want to join you all for the Charity Visit. It’s a Friday, I will apply my leave first thing on Monday morning. My family is planning a shopping spree and overnight stay at my brother’s house in JB on the 17 Oct, like that hor…. I might as well don’t follow you all back to Sin…may divert to my brother’s house. Hope we have enough cars, I think hire a bus / coach is not practical leh. This is solely SHC event?

    Ah Nee

  3. Hi Sam,

Thanks for your post and photos. I’ll give you some money for them later.
I doubt if many members will go and if they do it might be difficult to prevent any gawking and rubber-necking, especially in the handicapped home.
Consequently I am asking you to reconsider your decision to bring a load of potential rubber-necking sightseers there. As far as I can see there is no program to bring some cheer, like singing, some magic show etc. I am not suggesting that you take on more effort to organise a magic show etc. Please don’t misunderstand.
The effect of bringing a busload of curious ‘do-gooders’, up to JB, showering gifts and money, as well as possibly a misplaced sense of sympathy, might give a wrong impression to the children and management of the Home.
It might not be necessary to have a bus and I am willing to drive my (small) car up there.
As I can see from the photos, the Homes are clean, presumably well-run and the residents look healthy enough.
For those interested to help further, they may want to meet with the management to unerstand how they run the place and see what other help is required.
I am only prepared to give some small money, for my own selfish reasons (I am now reading ‘moving refrigerators for dummies’). I hope in the mercy of the Almighty.

Cheers and may a Thousand Blessings be upon you,
    Salaam.

  4. Yes, I agree with what Charles says.

Tian Soo may be able to throw some light as to how further help can be rendered as He was talking with the Management while Karen and myself were going around taking the photos.

  5. Care@Haven
This is a Christian home for abandon children. They operate from 2 large houses donated for their use in the same estate. Each house looks after about 18 kids. Condition of living and care are very good. The children are given Christian teachings in the mornings as well as at night before bedtime.
If you want to go to heaven, this is a good place to donate because they are taking very good care of the kids, ‘saving souls’ and they will prey for you as well.

    Love Foundation.
These people have a much harder job, they cater to children and adults with physical or mental disabilities. Their ‘clients’ need 100% care. Conditions are as good as it can be. If conditions are too good people will abandon their children there unnecessarilly. They seem to have a very small staff to take care of over 30 ‘clients’. I cannot be sure if they are frugal because they are poor or money have gone to the wrong place. I have sent them some searching questions as an individual(not SHC member)
Meanwhile we have to take them as genuine and great people deserving our respect and help. They don’t promise you to go to heaven, you have to do it because you want to .

I don’t think it is a good idea for over 10 people to go at one time. They are not Zoos or Shopping Center. Donations can still be made without oglling at them. The managemnet are obilged to entertain visitors to get more support. But each time they do this it means less time for the kids. We can always have regular trips. Huat3 goes there everyweek, so those who want to go and help can tack along. Make sure your presents there is to help or entertain them and not the other way round.

  6. Hi again,

I have a small idea. Those of you who want to help in ‘small’ ways might want to bake a cake and we can bring them over to share tea-time with them.

Some might want to wrap some “lucky dip” presents for the residents. I can help carry and transport them.

But this is for the EO, Mr Sam Goh to decide.

I have to add that it is easy for me to suggest as I cannot bake, cook or wash. So please do not ask me to help. I am only your humble driver.

A Thousand Blessings to all in this project.

  7. Sam Huat Huat,

Count me in on 16th Oct……… will pontang work.

BTW I have a box of clothing, shoes, books, toys to give away…how to pass to you huh?

Also have a couple of school bags and 2 violins ( 1/8 and 1/4 size) to give away but not sure if these are sutiable for the homes.

I agree with Charles (#6) Tian Soo (28) so this should not be taken as an outing for us SHCians to oogle at them

I intend to take some potrait shots for the children and do a print for them to keep, not sure if this can be arranged on that day. I guess the children would like to have a picture of themselves to keep… but if for some reason this is considered a bad idea then please let me know ya

I will bring my line dance music along and if time permits we can do some simple line dancing if this is appropriate

    Sockie

  8. Sam

Why choose a day that crash with my oktober fest event ??

I cant make it on this day and helo fren Bira & sockie ..u two are in for the oktober fest???

    Karen

  9. Hi Sam,

If you choose 19Oct hor, it will be perfect for me, cause my Company will be close on that day (inliew of Deepavali)

Well, since I can’t go, I will donate some cash.
Have transfered $100.00 to above POSB Acc.

    cheers,,

  10. Hi Sam Huat3,
How do I pass my donations for the orphanages to you?

The website of the Love Foundation Home shows their shopping list (under expenses). Knowing what they need may help you to purchase the ‘right’ stuff. If possible, include some foodstuff that allows visitors to help feed the handicapped when they are there.

    Cheers,

  11. Sam Huat3,

Tui Pu Chi hor….blur blur like sotong. Too many things nowadays get all mixed up. Have to withdraw and I will join you all some other time.

    Thanks Karen for reminding.

  12. Hi Oi Cheng,
I have transfered $50 to your account. Transaction reference is 2484226557.

Hi Sam, have a fulfilling trip and keep up the good work, thanks!

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  13. Hi Clara, Eileen and Marylee (Perth)

TQ for your donation. I just checked my account and see only 2 transfers, one from Eileen and the other says Lum Oi Cheng so I take it that it is Marylee(Perth). Clara’s may come in later since through UOB, will check again tomorrow.

I am unable to see transaction no. on my side so at the point when they ask for name to appear, please put your name so I can straightaway identify the donor.

Once confirmed receipt, I will update in the post your name, amount and rec’d.

  14. it is nice to see that shc folks like the tens of thousands of other singaporeans feeling and reaching out to the less miserables around us. i feel that we wish to solicit concern from any group of people, especially for an one-off gesture, it is best to focus on getting something specific for the beneficiaries(buy a door, or a chair or a TV, etc. that they need; and get it for them or think of something we can add value to them if you wish to do the exercise on a yearly or regular basis; it should be a project platform that is able to help them generate income or develop skills that will generate income.

Most welfare homes have their backing “fundraisers”, like the buddhist federation, protestants churches, catholic welfare or gov welfare agencies sponsor. Like in our country, we have all kinds of fundraising televised and telephony and texting type, as far as cash is concern.

On the issue of giving cash donation, if one wish to give, give with a personal joy and don’t spoil it by saying if they are going to live up to your expectation. Don’t give if you have the slightest discomfort, so that nobody think negatively of you. Two mistakes does not make a rhyme!

  15. It is indeed very heart-warming to note that many SHCians are so eager to do their bit for the 2 homes. There would be no problems for cash donations. However, if we intend to go by coach, please be mindful that all goods have to taken down from the coach for customs check. This might be a problem.

  16. Hi again,

This is a slightly different issue. Mr Sam Goh, I hope you do not mind me ‘borrowing’ this post for a while.

There is a group that is making Christmas hampers for the families of prisoners. They intend to use plastic pails to keep the household items. These will be the hamper.

The best price I have is S$3.40 a pail. If by any chance anyone here knows where and how I can get to buy these pails for less, please let me know asap. We need about 250 pails.

As I cannot leave my hp no here, please post your comments here and I will find some way to contact you. Otherwise, if you know my no, please contact me directly.

This is not a request for money, donations in cash or kind, assistance in any form. Simply a contact for cheap pails if you know.

Thanks very much for your help, and also to Mr Goh for his forbearance.

    Cheers

  17. Hi Charles Chua,

The best price I have is S$3.40 a pail. If by any chance anyone here knows where and how I can get to buy these pails for less, please let me know asap. We need about 250 pails.

Ok pal. Pails come in different sizes @ different prices.
What is the exact size you are looking for ?

I can help you to ask around ABC, 1.99 or whole sale stores if you can provide me the exact size of the pail that you had in mind for your hampers.

  18. Charles

I just read the comment on the pail… Toyoga at Tao Payoh area (warehouse Sale) always sell very cheap plastic continer and they always got purchase with purchase kind of promotion.. since I don know what kind/size of pail u want – u can go down or call them to check on the price.

They have many types of plastic container/pail and prices are very low.

  20. Hi Sam & volunteer group….sorry, not joining u all as unable to take leave on 16 Oct.

Hi Oi Cheng….hve just transferred $50 to your savings account.

    Thanks.

  21. Hi Sockie @# 10

Regarding the little violins you want to donate to the orphanages – if the orphanages cannot make use of them, you could use them in an exchange with me. I’m interested in the violins. I can propose a number of things from my end for the exchange for your consideration. :)

    Regards,

    *Sam Huat3,
Do you want to take the violins?

    Cheers

  22. Hi Oi Cheng, Stephen and Karen,

    Thanks for all your feedback.

Stephen, I need 250 pails of 27litres or 28 litres size. My best price is S$2.25/pail, (weighted average)

Oi Cheng and Karen T, Just back and I have actually spoken to Toyogo and their best price is S$2.70.pail, after which I can buy another 3 pails for another S$5, for every S$10 I spend in Toyogo. (ie wtd ave pr of S$2.25/pail).

Unsuccesful with NTUC and another person is helping me with Sheng Siong.

I think I have enough shopping for 1 day. I am happy with the Toyogo deal unless something much better comes about.

So a big thank you from me for all your generous help, especially Oi Cheng who helped to make some calls too.

Also to Mr Sam Goh for letting me ‘borrow’ his post.

A Thousand Blessings to All, Salaam.

  23. Hi Charles Chua,

….Steven not Step hen pls. ,
I need 250 pails of 27litres ??? or 28 litres size. My best price is S$2.25/pail, (weighted average).

Can I clarify with you ?
    Vol of 1 pail = 1/250 x 27 = 0.108 litres. ie 108 cc.size equivalent to the size of a small shampoo bottle .

    Impossible!

Next, 1 pail with vol of 27 litres is highly impossible too unless you are buying a giant size pail.

Ok. Prices quoted from the saleman are :-
    i) the price of a 3 gallon ( 12 litres ) pail costs $3.80

    ii)the cost of a 4 gallon pail ( 16 litres ) costs $4.80

…..My best price is S$2.25/pail, (weighted average). Yours at $2.25 is indeed a V.GOOD deal.

Beware, I heard from the salesman that pails made from China cost slightly less ; more glossy and beautiful in appearance but cheaper raw material being used and cannot last long.

However, pails made in M’sia are duller in appearance and cost slightly more and most important is more lasting.

Anyway, I will go to him to ask him for a quote of 250 pails after you had clarify in your comment.

  24. Hi Steven,

Sorry for misspelling your name. Completely unintentional.

The pail should be 4 gall or 16l. What confused me was they were both marked as 27l and 28l in Toyogo and NTUC respectively. I think you are right and the labels used in Toyogo and NTUC is incorrect.

They are the normal type used in to wash cars etc. Best price is S$2.25/pail.

I am quite satisfied and only want feedback if there others which are cheaper. Hope you are not put to much trouble sourcing the pails.

I will remember your remark about those made in M’sia and in PRC.
We might need volunteers to help pack the ‘hampers’ and also ‘co-drivers’ to deliver them. ‘Co-drivers’ do not drive, they only deliver the hampers. Those who need to cleanse their ‘karma’ might want to volunteer. Please let me know in advance. Also preferred functions of packers or co-drivers.

    Gratefully yours

  25. halo oi cheng , charles chua & all those in my post,
will reply 2 u all ,as i am in china now ,so got lack of tx lor…

cos i aso ve others charity 2 lah !!!

    cheers & huat huat huat

  26. Charles

Will help with packing if I am around. Please let me know via my email as do not want to clog up this thread, even tho Sam doesn’t mind.

Away 7-12. During this period will not be able to check my account as I do not want to carry my token with me. Will do so once I return.

  27. Hi Charles Chua,

….The pail should be 4 gall or 16litres.
What confused me was they were both marked as 27l and 28l in Toyogo and NTUC respectively. I think you are right and the labels used in Toyogo and NTUC is incorrect.

I think the 271 and 281 are their ref.nos of the pails and not their capacity.

….Hope you are not put to much trouble sourcing the pails.
    No trouble at all.

…We might need volunteers to help pack the ‘hampers’
Others and I would like to help to pack but can you pls. let us know the exact date, time and place as we might have our own personal commitments ?

…Those who need to cleanse their ‘karma’ might want to volunteer.????

Charles C, this statement does NOT sound good.
Are you implying that those who help to volunteer are here to gain merits ?

If we want to volunteer it must come deeply from our heart and NOT for the sake of gaining merits to go to heaven ? Right?

  28. I have transferred $100 to Lum Oi Cheng’s POSB account. Transaction was done on 06/10/2009, 9:47am. Ref no : 8414.

Please pass on my well wishes to the Homes.

    Thank you,
    Nina Choo

  29. Hi Sam/Oi Cheng

Please count me in for this visitation to the Orphanage. I have transferred $100 to Oi Cheng’s account on 5th October at 17.02 under ref. 4068.

    Cheers
    Jane Tan

  30. Hi CharlesC @# 31,

I might be able to help pack/be co-driver if you could let me know the date/time /place for this activity. If it’s on a weekday, I should be able to reschedule my commitments. Thanks.

    Cheers,

  31. Hi Oi Cheng,

Have transferred $400 to your POSB a/c today. Can you please split it equally between the 2 homes.

    Thanks very much.

Hi Steven, Sam, Jassmine and Oi Cheng,

Thanks very much for your offers of help. Will keep you informed as the time draws nearer.

Steven, “…Those who need to cleanse their ‘karma’ might want to volunteer.????

Charles C, this statement does NOT sound good.
Are you implying that those who help to volunteer are here to gain merits ?

If we want to volunteer it must come deeply from our heart and NOT for the sake of gaining merits to go to heaven ? Right?”

Of course you are right lah. Only joking. Where’s your sense of humour? Don’t be such a tight arse. Chrismas is coming.
    Cheers

  32. Hi Charles,

I would like to help in the packing of ‘hampers’ if you need more ‘hands’. After the PSLE next week I should be available even if on weekdays.

For the record, I am not doing this for any merits but just giving a little time to the less fortunate from a more fortunate person.

  33. Hi Nina, Jane and Charles

Thank you on behalf of the Homes for your donation.

Hmm.. Someone donated $50 yesterday but chose to remain ANON. It’s alright to remain ANON but do at least email me to let me know. I promise I won’t even tell Sam.

Money concerned, I don’t want to get into trouble lor!

  34. Hi Cat @ 39,

Thanks for your offer. Will keep you informed when the packing date is closer.

Of course I know you are not doing it for ‘merit’ reasons, I think I know you better. You are not uptight.

Cheers and more cheers from Bellini’s

  35. Hi Sam HH,

….Mega Supermarket for about 1hr to buy the daily necessities for these event.

I would like to help in the shopping for barang2 and hope there are still seats left in any of the 2 cars.

If they are fully occupied, then I would like to share the cost of the coach charter to JB orphanage homes.
    Pls. reg me.
    Thanks

  36. Charles,

Will wait for your notification then.

Its good that I am not an ‘uptight’ person, I try not to be ….hehe

We will definitely go ‘cheering’ at Bellinis again when our fren zooms back in town, meanwhile stay healthy and happy!

  37. Hi everybody,

Thanks very much for your kind offers to help in packing and being ‘co-drivers’. I have kept the names.

A BIG THANK YOU also to Ann To and her friend Catherine Lim who helped me to buy the 252 pails from Toyogo at $1.70/pail.

We are very happy with the price.

Apologies to Sam for borrowing his post. Hope to be excused.

To early to wish Season’s Greetings still, but some felicitations to all.

  41. Hi All,
Post had been update, pls refer there for latest updates.

Sockie/OiCheng, are both of u still coming for these visitation due to Octofest event by Karen. Of cos, I wuld vry much prefered both of you to come along as I m sure that both of u will not miss this Octofest event lor, at most, abit late lor.

Sockie, doe, I m not sure how much timing we had for these homes but I m in favor of u bringing along ur music and if time permits, we can at least have a dance item wif them, tio bo? We will play by ear but bottomline, u must b there mah.

Frisna, Sam and me had tenatively decided to end these 2 home visitation by 5.00pm. However, we cant guarantee 4 sure the timing 2 rtn 2 SG due to traffic condition from JB 2 SG which is beyond our cntrl, rite.. Hence, the decision is still yours, since we still hv 1 more vacancy 2 fill up lor..

Since we will only b going by 2 cars, we definitely not able to bring all barang2 at 1 go tis time but we promised that these barang2 will eventually be given to them at later date since Sam visited them quite frequently.

For those dat r keen 2 visit these 2 homes other den 16/10, you can liaise with Sam directly via gohchinhuat@gmail.com to tag along if u may wish 2.

Cheers and hv a nice weekend… Dolly

  42. Hi Sockie & Oi Cheng, noted that both of you wont be able to participate this time round for the visitation as you have a prior arrangement.

OiCheng, will liaise with u separately on d transfer of funds thru’ email.

For those going, kindly note that 2 pick up points, tentatively Aljunied and Clementi MRTs at 8.30am and will leave from JB to SG around 5pm.

As for collection of barang2, as Sam’s plc right now is flooded with toys and clothings. But there is no way that we are able 2 bring all these at 1 go. However, rest assured that these donated barang2 will eventually be channeled to these 2 homes.

For those that we have yet to collect, we will probably wun b collecting them till our next visit. Kind understanding much appreciated.

    Cheers.. Dolly

Thanks for the affirmation in your email too.

  47. Sam, I think it would be good if Charles can meet the Clementi group around SG itself so that we can xrf some of those toys and clothings to his car, if not, your car will be loaded with too much belongings n might delayed due to rountine check at JB. Any comments on this? I hope that we can at least bring in the maximum load to these 2 homes if possible. Cheers.. Dolly

  72. Hi All

Further to my comment @77 on the accounts, there was a balance of RM1152.65.

This amount was used up on our last visit on 20 Nov 09.
MacDonald Meals RM375 for the Children and Staff of Care Haven.

These amounts added up to RM1155.
The shortfall of RM2.35 was covered by Dolly.

On behalf of EO, I thank all donors for their cash contribution, and all the volunteers who had helped in this charity event.

    Have a nice day everyone!
