A joget event

There can never be enough events to satisfy the diets of SHCians.  Many SHCians have played their part to be EOs.  Some are waiting to be EOs while some think the EO’s queue is just too long.

We have many events; except for the joget event which has been discussed frequently, but hmm, the idea seems to twinkle and twinkle each time we talk about it.  Let’s have a grand joget event.

Tinkle, tinkle?

  1. Hi Terence

It is great to have a Joget event. Firstly, Norlinda or any other Malay SHCian, do please correct me on the following comments:-

The joget is a traditional but deemed “modern” dance by conservative Malays as the joget has a fast-beat tune (berencak rencak) unlike other traditional dances. It was introduced during the 1920s, to enliven a wedding party with the songs being all categorised as Ronggeng tunes.

For the non-Malays, only the Chinese Peranakans, specifically Malaysians & Sporeans are familiar with the joget-ronggeng, and moreover exclusively with oldies like me. Probably not more than twenty Spore Babas in their 50s and older can dance the Ronggeng. Perhaps less than half of Malay Sporeans below age 30 can joget too.

This reminds me there was some buzzwords in the post/comments sometime late last year,of one or two SHCian wanting to hold a Peranakan Night-cum-Ronggeng party, scheduled for this year.

  2. Pak Abel..
Im not the right person for you to ask about it la..
    saya cuma joget2 for fun!

Hamidah..would be a perfect person to comment?..
Midah…i know u specialise in linedance…but im sure
your knowledge about traditonal joget would be best!

To me…the word ‘joget’ means dance, in Malay…haha
Nevertheless..it would be really interesting to see all of the girls wear kebaya & the boys in batik to the rythm of
    joget-joget!..hhmmmm :)

  3. Gosh, most of you have been attracted to the makan events; and forgotten about this joget event.

Calling Rose, Nor, Hamidah and Sarah, any good suggestions for a joget event? Keep it simple and small. I guess we can still do this event.
