  7. Dear YK, AN and Lily

It is thru your constant enthusiasm in being the EO and co-EOs in this event… that I got the opportunity to meet up with more SHCians… and the chance to chat over dinner with those whom I’ve already met before or corresponded over emails and got to know them even better.. a BIG thank you to this team… **(^_^)**

    Dear Douglas and Ivan

Many, many thanks to you both for helping in adjusting the bicycle gears for me. It certainly did help to lessen my “stress” to peddle hard and getting out of breath within a short distance.. (>o<)

Douglas… thanks again for keeping the slow pace with me and your encouraging words on the way back, as I was actually beginning to wonder if I could ever make it back on time… (^o^)

I will certainly try to join as often as I can… as I know I need to build up my stamina and leg muscles… so am hoping there will be no conflict to my calendar in Jul… (#_#)

Last but not least, John.. thanks for the lift to Parkway Parade.. (^o^)

    Cheers and a happy Sunday… – Pauline

  9. Hi Pauline #24

Good that you are into cycling and having great fun. You will have the endurance and stamina if you cycle more often.

    Hi Irene #25

Don’t give up just because you had another fall, we have to focus and be more alert when cycling at crowded places. You seem to handle the bike well.

Hope to see both of you in our next monthly cycling event.

  10. Hello YK / Douglas and all cyclists,

Does anyone know of a bicycle shop that is willing to do trade in?

You see, I own a rather big bike ( a city tourer 26″ ) but I’ll be moving soon to share an apartment with a friend and there is simply no room for my bike. The bike is still pretty new and I don’t know of anyone who would like to buy it over from me ( at a reasonable price, of course ).I bought it from Rodalink for $380 a year ago.

Personally, I would prefer a big bike for stability but now at best, I can keep a foldable one (which I can store in my room).

Can anyone recommend a good ligh-tweight foldable? Bear in mind that I cycle on the roads and also have a budget to keep.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you,

    Thanks.
    Amy

  11. Hi Amy

Shops marketing “TREK” bicycles do trade-in bicycle provided it is also “TREK” brand.

Talking about foldable, the light ones are pretty expensive and the heavy range from affordable to can buy if you don’t mind, especially if you have a very tight budget. I would suggest you look around at specialty shops to find out otherwise just be satisfied to get an “ALEOCA” brand foldable w/o Frisbees for $69. Again, most if not all foldable have weight constraint.

Using this website as information guide, you can find most of the answers here. http://www.dahon.com/support/faqs

Hope the above helps you arrive at the right decision.

  12. Thanks YK.

I owned a foldable Dahon many years ago ( bought it at the now gone YAOHAN store ) but had a lot of trouble folding and unfolding it ( unlike the ease with which the lady in the advertisement was able to do it).
I remember working up a sweat just to set it up and then again to fold it back. Perhaps I didn’t get the knack of doing it.

Anyway, thanks for the Dahon web link. The bikes there are beautiful. Do you know where our local Dahon agent SPEED MATRIX is?

Wonder if they have a wide range of the bikes on display. I like what I see on the web and am keen to check them out ( and their prices too ). Of course this time round, I’ll have to make sure that I can really fold and unfold it with ease b4 buying.

I don’t mind paying a bit more for a lighter bike ‘cos it will be easier for me to cart it around.

Must remember that now I must dismount and push my bike along most housing estate paths or risk being fined.

I really miss cycling around the town centres esp to run errands.

    Thanks again for the info.

  13. TQ to the EOs,

Ah Nee and Lily you are so approachable, feeling comfortable with the SHC’ians though is my 2nd cycling session (according to Lily is the 1st session discounting last month pot luck).

Thanks to Douglas and Henry for the tips and assurance during the ride. Got to get myself to remember all you nice people even though manage to be more acquainted with Ivan, Andrew, Lydia, Irene.

Unfortunately not able to stay for dinner cos got to adjourn to another place.
Looking forward to see you all again, and the next cycling event.

  14. Hi Amy

I own an Dahon Vitesse and would like to give my opinion about folding bikes:

They are not so easy to fold and take on public transport. Anyway, SBS only allows ONE bike per bus and only after peak hours.

They are heavy and not so easy to lug around; My Dahon is an aluminium model yet it weighs 20-plus kg.

Most folding bikes have smaller wheel diameters and may not give you a smooth ride… I’ve seen some bikes with absurd wheels about 6 inches!

My take on deciding which kind of bike to buy:

Decide what you’ll be using the bike for first.

A folding bike is great for cycling around your housing estate, doing errands, and even the excercise routine. You can fold it up and take it in your car to SHC Cycling events. But it is not a cross-country bike or a mountain bike.

    Enjoy your bike experience!

  15. Hi Kenneth,

You’re absolutely right. The Dahon foldable bike I had was far from easy to fold and unfold though not so heavy (by virtue of its size).

I’ll love to keep my 26″ city bike but will have to give it up due to space constraints.

I doubt, I would ever go on a bus or MRT train with a foldable just as I seldom carry my bike in my car.
Usually, I’ll cycle from home to my destination.

My idea of getting a foldable is to enable me to store it away (when I’m not using it) in one corner of my room.

Chaining my bike along the common corridor of my apartment is a No No.

Thanks for your advice, Kenneth. I am also not very sure I’ll like a foldable unless I can get one that really meets my needs.
