One night in JB – Sat/Sun 30/31 Oct 2010

I have not been to JB for a long time.  Probably the last time I was there overnight was in 1991.  JB has become very prosperous over the years, and the last time I could admire the city was while passing through and going to the kelong or to Batu Pahat in the day.  I guess there is much to explore, but as I am not able to find the time, i had to convince someone to guide the way.  Well, finally, after two months of temptation, I manage to con Sam Ah Huat tonight to help piece together "One night in JB".  As usual, in the most disorganised fashion, nothing has been decided. The hotel has not been decided, what we will do there, what are the dinner plans, how we get there and how much it will cost.  Nothing.

The only data we have confirmed are:

  1. The dates – Sat to Sun 30 – 31 Oct 2010.
  2. The time – Sat, early morning to sun, late afternoon.
  3. The one who is most interested to go – Terence Seah
  4. The co-EOs are Sam Ah Huat and Dolly Lim.
  5. The cost – somewhere before $150.
  6. And, what’s included are a bed overnight and dinner.
  7. Other details – guess we have to start thinking now.

It would be nice if you can join the party.  But, it is still two months away.  If your diary is free, and you may be able to join us,  try putting up your hand.  Once we know where the beds are located, we will let you know when you can put down your hands.  In the meantime, feel free to toss around any idea.  Interested?

  1. Terence,

    Good idea!
Since it’s illegal to organise Porn in SG, having it in J.B
    would be a perfect getaway.
Perhaps the ratio of men this time would increase tremendously.
Sam with his flawless Ah Beng’s speak would be the perfect
    organiser.

Kill 3 birds with 1 stone.
    Three cheers to our founder.

Sam, just kidding, no offence to mention yr name, hehe.

  2. Hi terence,
U’ve overlooked the dates . Friday should be 29th, Saturday (30th) and Sunday (31st). May need ur attention and amendments if necessary.

    Cheers,

  3. Hi JamesT #1 and anyone planning to join me, Sam and Dolly,

Like any big cities in the world, Johor Bahru has a lot of attractions. Good authenic local food, bright neon lights, irrestible discos and Karaokes, good shopping and exciting night life.

Some of us have second homes there; others would just cross the causeway to play golf. Still, there are others who would just go over and eat porridge after midnight. And, of course, for great shopping, petrol, medication, nursing services and why not, a retirement place.

James, porn in JB? Not sure if I would go with a big group. Instead of us rushing back in time for a good sleep, why not stay overnight and explore JB? We can stay out late, go nuts over the nightlife and enjoy the company of fellow SHCians.

  4. I used to follow my brother to his JB house, few times in a year. But this JB trip is different, got “seow” Sam huat, should be interesting….I am ON lah. :)

  5. Terence,
Richard Wong thru’ sms 2 Sam informing his interest 2 go 4 this trip.

All concerned, doe, we did not specified d ttl paxs needed 2 go 4 tis trip, nevertheless, we hv approached xport co. based on 12paxs/mini van as well as 40paxs/coach bus. Hence, even if we r unable 2 meet d 40paxs, we will still go ahead with 12paxs group.

Todate, those confirmed going are Terence, Sam, Dolly, ANee and RWong.

More updates will b given 1 we hv further updates later…

    Cheers.. Dolly

  6. Hi I am new. I have organised trips to Muar and Batu Pahtu and tomorrow I will be bringing 48 pax for 1 day trip to the above. I have included tim sum breakfast, 1 sumptious lunch with cold dish and 1 dinner with shark fins and all for only $60.

For the JB trip, can actually go for the makan makan tour do some organic farm visits, nooddles visits to Muar nad later stay over in JB.

Well this is my suggestions only.

If anyone interested email to cpohlian2@yahoo.com.sg

    Thanks

  7. Dolly, Sam,

Definitely it’s equally fun to have RichardW and AhNee join. We will go whatever the number of pax.

Sam, I take it we can go to the smoke coconut drink stall. Let’s take this as tentative stop.

How about doing something charitable in the morning before we head for the hotel? Two hours may be just good.

  9. Hi DanielK,

We havent selected the hotel yet; although I have asked Sam to do the recce work. We are looking for a hotel which is clean, reasonably priced, safe and convenient to amenities in JB. Likely we will choose one of the hotels recce’d.

Do let us know if you know some interesting hotels. Some of us may take up your suggestion at some stage; afterall JB is convenient and near.

Hi Sam, thank you for the recce’ing work. The near by places are fine. Did you get a chance to try the massage; just want to make sure you know the difference in the various massages. Karaoke, yes, I guess some of us will be keen. Coconut milk, yes, that too. Care haven, yes, plan on it. We go.

What about my black char kuay teow? Got open air beer or not, incase we cannot sleep? Sorry got to tax your brain, since you are also the JB expert.

  11. Since we will be busy with all the activities, do you need to have such a luxury accommodation for about M$230? It would most probably exceed our budget of S$150 after taking into the account other expenses – food, transportation etc etc.

Maybe we can try this budget hotel – http://www.spahoteljb.com/index.php in Taman Sentosa – only M$75 for a double room or a deluxe room for M$120 for 4 person.

  12. Hi Terence,

I have not. Anyway anything that is not black is consider clean to me – was conditioned during my army days in a armour battalion which was the first unit to beat the commando to be the best combat unit.

By the way I have occasionally stayed in a budget hotel near city square, JB which cost about M$70 and I find it quite clean.

Maybe can ask someone to reece the hotel and negotiate for a better rate if we have some volume.

  13. 4 to a room?
    Spells doom
Urgency strikes at the same time
Seambling for the bowl is no crime
    But…….1 toilet bowl
Ony 1 backside it can hold
On the floor 3 other backsides will roll & roll.

So better not to crowd the room
Lest farts appear boom after boom
No peace but a lot of gloom
    For that 1 bowl
All 4 will rest their fate on lom chiam pas & orr beh soom
Then you think of home sweet home
Where unrushed you shit & still hv time to clean & comb.

  14. Hi Terence/Steven,
If you like to get a 5 star hotel at a 1 star price, you can go for Tune Hotels at Danga Bay. Now they got Merdeka offer from Rm18 onwards. I had stayed in this hotel recently at their special offer and it is really cheap, clean and good. Free internet facilities are also available at the ground floor near the reception. You get special discount when you book online in advance just like their AirAsia concept. Cheers..

  15. Just kaypoh a bit and make a test booking for Tune Hotels will cost M$75 for a room with 2 single beds, 12 hours air-conditioning plus 2 towels with free essentials toiletries kit. Maybe it will cost more when we book at a later date.

  16. Hi Bobby and StevenN,

Very inquisitive, both of you. You must have good reasons to go into JB. I hope you can join us. I will also look at your suggestions.

Hi TimL, I am sure we can look positively at 4 to a room. Why not? 4 butts together… You have been too quiet. Like to join me and others, for a one night in JB?

    Terence Seah

  17. 4 butts in a room got fun meh? Not unless there’re 7 orifices…….

Unlikely for me to join lah. Kid in boarding school which sadly doesnt take care of undergament laundry. So me on standby outside everyday to take these soiled garments home to wash. So, instead of me joining you, let me reverse the offer for you to join me.

  20. Sam, “chut ho bei” brings back a lot of nostalgia.

In those heady days, 24 and 08 were the favourite numbers tossed around. Over the years and with the polis hard at work, these numbers disappeared and finger signs replaced them. Extending 2 fingers to form a “V” and “03” are popular and signal friendship.

Sometimes, to keep another quiet, you let the middle finger stand out outstandingly.

Read that you wont be attending this evening’s MG. Will catch up the nest time………….

  21. Hi SHCians

With particular attention to Terence & Sam – I am quite familiar with JBaru, the town being my first overseas haunt since early 70s, ‘a la Mechinta & Straits View Hotel lounge and sometimes a stopover-nite after watching Malaysia Cup football at Larkin Stadium betwenn mid-70s to early 90s and plus having an ex-Malaysian colleague since retired 2005 who lives in Taman Century whom till today we meet up every quarter in JB town which the original “in place” is the area bounded by Merlin Tower(East) and to the west the Malay Heritage district and going north after the Public Bank Building is bordered by the 5star Puteri Pan Pacific Hotel and the refurbished Komtar Bldg

Partly Temasek-owned City Square is linked to the shabby looking Merlin Tower by a covered overhead bridge, the latter housing several haircut-cum-massage parlours and a few open-air drinks lounge hosted by some Indonesian females PROs from Batam on social visit passes.

There is a newly opened hotel on Merlin’s ground level facing City Sq and a few more hotels across Jalan Siew Nam(supposedly a pedestrian walkway, BE CAREFUL vehicles still drive through) and a few “Chiew bars” with operational dim-lights rooms(please check price 20 or 25ringgit per hour rental, hostesses tips 5ringgit per girl and minimu 10ringgit to the one “Opening table”)

The 3yr old Danga Bay area I have ye to visit. For a less congested area is the Sentosa Plaza district, a more upmarket place, with the 5star New York hotel within taxi distance.

    Regards

    Abel Tan

  22. Hi Abel #29,

I went to Mechinta and Straits View many years ago. What happened to the place now? Not that I plan to go there again, but where have they shifted to? Thanks for the memory. Why not some day, we go there? Guys and gals, welcome.

And for those who are thinking of joining the “One night in JB”, you might like to know a motor-cycle recce to pre-experience the place and mood is in place this week. Am off to Jakarta today, so end week to JB. Seems like this event will be a small group, so maybe a mini van will do for the 30-31 Oct.

    Terence Seah

  23. Hi Margaret,
Is ur hubby a SHC member? kindly note that this event is organised solely for members only.

    Hi Pat,
Noted your interest n keep u posted.

    Cheers.. Dolly

  24. halo chief terence ah ,

so 2day our appt confirm liao hor….1430hrs same plc hor…

so buddies , wait for our chief decision lah…

sam huat huat huat jb here we come lol….

  25. Hi Scians

With attention to Terence, Straits View Hotel-cum-Mechinta cabaret site is now the Hyatt-Sheraton hotel,

Understand, Mechinta’s live-show (striptease too) lisence was not renewed in 1982/83 due to (my own deductions) the rising influence of conservative Anwar Ibrahim or disaprooval by the newly installed Sultan Ismail who passed away few years ago and plus the awakening fervour of Islamic Righteousness which is influenced by Iran’s Ayahtollah Khomeni worldwide prosetylising of a Islamic revival.

Spore in the 70s was straight-laced and after Tea-dances disappeared with the taking over of the Celestial Room (present Dhoby Gaut MRT), Sporeans who seek more excitement went over to Mechinta which day-shows could be arranged for selected customers at quite stiff prices. Batam became “alive” in the late 89s. A few Sporeans via personal connections let-their-hair-down in Batu Pahat or take the 14hour bus trip to Hatyai, south Thailand.

    Do have a pleasant trip.

    Regards

    Abel Tan

  26. “One night in JB”. We did a recce in the afternoon. Go straight into the hotel, it’s a clean beautiful boutique hotel. Love it so much, we booked a suite which has 3 rooms, sleeping 2-3 persons per room. So, one room is confirmed.

The plan is to pick up at Kranji MRT at 7.30am. In the morning, we will visit a home, after getting some essentials for the children. Sam will come up with more details later.

Moving on, Sam promises smoked coconut, if the roadside shop is not feeling lethargic.

Then, straight to hotel. We had tried the.nearby massage and nearby food markets. Getai available if we eat there, open air.

He program is still being worked on. So for now, the numbers will close at 12 pax, on a first payment first basis.

    Terence Seah

  27. Hi SHCians

Thank you Daniel #36 for your timely correction.

As a point of observation, through the years I travelled quite extensively in peninsular Malaysia between the years mid-70s to early 90s, and stopping over at all major towns except Kangar, Perlis, the Malays are mostly at home with their families by 8pm and thus it is the ethnic Chinese Malaysians that roamed the town till the late evening hours.

Perhaps the past decade have shown more Malays staying out a bit later, presumably on shopping spree and particularly in K Lumpur. My take is the Malays are more culturally family-bound during evening hours whereas the Chines is more “Gao liew”.

  28. Hi MargaretC #28,

Please let us have the full name of your hubby before registration. thank you.

    Hi SusanT #38,
I have travelled with you and James before. Hope you will appreciate that we may not be able to meet your strict diet and other little requests from time to time, during the trip. It would be tough to run around that part of JB looking for anything specific. You are welcome; but please be prepared yourself.

    Hi DebbieO #40,
    Only your name is registered.

    Terence Seah

  29. Hi Terence

I have indicated my interest in #31 and Dolly has kindly noted it in #32. However, I do not see my name in the list. Kindly advise.

    Regards,
    pat

  30. Hi Pat,
Hv included ur name. No worry, once Sam had finalised d xport arrangement and tour hilite, we might then post them so that everyone are aware what will be included in the $150/pax package deal and Terence had stated very clearly that they will be based on first pay allocation.

    Hi All,
Pls be patient and await for further update lor… Cheers.. Dolly

  31. Terence #41,

Don’t worry about the diet for Susan and me.
We’ll go along with whatever food arranged.
Don’t think it’s fair to impose on the E.O.
If there’s any special diet, we will bring them along.

    james

  32. Hi Terence!

I’m interested to join you guys on this trip, provided my new maid is realiable enough to be left with my dad.

She’s coming on 2nd Oct and I hope everything will be ok.
When is the last day to confirm?

    Thank you for your understanding.

  33. Hi Cath,
Thanks for the interest. However, I had emphasized numerous times thru here dat confirmation will strictly based on 1st paid 1st go scenario. Once we reached d req’d headcount of 12pax, tis group is confirmed. Those dat fall under 2nd group of 12paxs, will not b considered confirmed if there is no enough paxs to make up the qty.

We will be coming up with payment details once we hv finalised our program itinerary lor..

    Cheers.. Dolly

  37. Here’s an update on the JB overnight trip. The journey between the hotel and Kranji MRT two ways cost us approx $500. The team finds this expensive; and it is likely we will drop this trip for now.

Meantime, let’s see if there are volunteers to drive or if there are cheaper options to get to the hotel.

Sorry folks, for the bad news.

    Terence Seah

  38. Hi StevenN,

Are you familiar with KB cabs? Any idea or suggestions on how to use JB cabs? Like where? Roughly the costs for a day, and pickup poins. TK.

    Terence Seah

  39. Hi Terence,

I don’t book cab when I go around JB. You can flag down any cab anywhere and they use meter since last year.

I don’t think it will cost-wise to book a cab. Just flag down any cab to bring you to any destination – definitely must not too remote or else you will have difficulty to get back.

That’s why it’s important to see how the itinerary like.

  40. Hi StevenN,
Our tentative itinerary will b planned as from SG to JB 4 breakfast, to Supermarket 2 buy essentials for orphanage home, all d way, stop for smoked coconut, orphanage home b4 leaving 4 hotel at Bandar Seri Alam area. This is only 4 1st day which estimated to be at least 5 flag down car points. Let alone wat is planned for 2nd day. Pls bear in mind at sum plc (orphanage), we may need 2 walk dist b4 we r able 2 hail a taxi lor.. Any beta suggestion har? Cheers.. Dolly

  41. Hi Dolly,

Suggestion only. Maybe we should take out the visit to the orphanage since our main purpose for this visit is not to do charity but One Night in JB which imply entertainment.

What are other entertainments do you have in mind for the one night? Maybe we can focus in the JB central area since there is some constraint on the transportation.

    Just my personal opinion only.

  42. Hi StevenN,
Tks 4 d suggestion, will seriously think n discussed among ourselves. FYI, if opt out orphanage, den, smoked coconut novelty will hv 2 missed out also lor as they r quite near 2 each other.

All other prog like lunch, dinner, massage, kok n shopping will be around d htl area hence no xport will be needed at dat point of tx.

It is always nice 2 hv other opinion so dat we can think of other beta options…

    Cheers.. Dolly

  43. Hi Terence,

Are you booking the transport from S’pore?
I used to take a 6 seater from JB to airport for only RM150/-.If that sounds reasonable I will pass you the contact.

    JB resident

  44. Hi Dolly at message 63,

I have been puzzling why you like to go to the orphanage and now I know it’s because of the smoked coconut. Anyway we can still go for the smoked coconut and leave the orphanage out since it will save us time and the inconvenience of transportation.

By the way here are two tour package which you may consider to request them to tailor to our requirement:

    http://www.psholidays.com/sic-tour-packages/nature-fruit-farm-tour

    http://www.citydmc.com/overland/makan_makan.html

  45. Hi Daniel
    – You did not mention the Rm150 is for 1-way or return. Judging from the price, I am asuming it is for 1-way only.
Hence for 12 pax, Rm150 x 2cabs x 2-way = Rm600 divided by 12 pax = Rm50pp and this is only for 1 destination. We have about 4-5 stops to make each way. Don’t think it’s going to work. Thanks for your offer.

    Dear Steven Ng
    – Your comment was under moderation because the 2 websites that you posted, tantamount to advertising for these agencies. Anyway, we’ve looked into them and the cheaper one priced @ $68pp x 12pax = $816 and this is for a day trip. They would have to make a second trip to bring us back the next day OR we will have to pay for the driver’s OT plus board & lodging of min. Rm150. That will cost us an additional of at least another $500 after negotiation. Thanks for your suggestion.

As Terence have said in #57 : “We will have to drop this trip for now. Sorry folks, for the bad news.”

  46. Hi Lily,

Didn’t realise it was such a big group.I guess the only feasible way is to come in here by public transport and move around by taxi…..my 2 cents worth.

    JB resident

  47. Hi Steven NG,

It seems you are quite curious to try out the smoked coconuts.

I had tasted the smoked coconuts in JB before with my brother’s family. Actually it is normal mature green coconuts smoked for a day or two by burning coconut stems and leaves to give out a lot of smoke. After smoking it looks like a burnt “charcoal” coconut.

The stall owners at their squatter hut even had the nerve to place a huge sign board claiming that the juicy water from the smoked coconut will lower high blood pressure , good for diabetic suffers…..etc. but its claims has NOT been proven scientifically yet the health authorities did not go after them.

Like Dr. M said, Malaysia Boleh! Apa pun boleh? The smoked coconut water is mildly sweet and warm.

In my opinion, when it comes to coconuts, nothing beats the THAI “land” coconuts with its juicy liquid as sweet as sugar and its tender loving flesh.

Steven Ng, you CAN afford to miss this but NOT the orphanage as it is an “eye opener” for those who are visiting them 1st. time. We are indeed v.bless and lucky compared to these orphans.

I remember when we were playing with them they called us “papa” . Such is the child’s yearning to have someone as their father.

Have fun in JB if this event materialises.
    Goodnight zzzzzzzzzz..

  48. Hi Steven Chan,

I want to try it for fun as I know that anything which is ‘smoked” is very unhealthy and in fact may cause cancer. You want to do a favour for the health and well-being of Singaporeans and Malaysian? Just take a photo of the stall and have it upload to youtube and I can guarantee that the local health authorities will quick hand quick leg take down the sign board. :)

I like Thailand coconuts as it is juicy and happened to taste it at local Thai restaurants and it’s quite costly – try to buy at the NTUC Fairprice but it taste horrible.

By the way I have soft spot for those who are mentally and physically handicapped but not orphanage as I know they are temporarily in need of emotional support when they can still young but they will outgrowth in no time. But for the mentally and physically handicapped they have no way to improve their lives apart from support from people like us.

  49. So, there are really many smoker-wannabes in our midst.

We dont hv to traverse the globe for a smoke, whether it’s disguised in the shape of a smoked-coconut.

Come join me for a smoke first – be my guest – and then we go find coconuts. Supermarts hv a lot : Indian, Hainan, Thai, Msia, Alaska coconuts. And then we continue smoking as we chew the flesh, smoking it in the process, and give it the texture we like….rare, medium or whatnot.

More seriously, an orphanage (or any charity home) visit is planned ahead with the Mgt of the Home. It’s not a look-see or an eye opener, unlike a visit to a zoon where you can drop by at any time, and wow at the rare finds and exhibits in there. People shd go to a Home, mission-oriented. Spending at least half a day there may sometimes be too short.

Bringing Enid Blyton books to an Old Folks Home will be out of place but not when you visit an orphage. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves (if we didnt go wearing singlets) and do the chores as previously arranged with the Home Mgt. Be prepared to let the kids ride on yr back in horse-fights. Be prepared to talk, behave, be teased and act like a kid again. Finding a chair to sit down will be the last of anyone’s thoughts.

Having done enough and purposefully in the day, what you do at nite – however wild or muted – will all be worth it.

  50. The one night in JB cannot be organised as planned in the original format due mainly to transportation cost. Therefore, as planned, this event is off. But, small groups may go on. Do contact Dolly for payment and availability.

We would revise this event for future events in JB. Thank you DanielK and stevenN for your suggestions.
