SHC Round Table

Following up on Terence’s post ( 25 September 2010 ) the inaugaral SHC Round Table event will be :

Date : 28 October 2010

Time : 7 pm

Venue : Moi Lum Cantonese Restaurant

Peck Seah Street/Maxwell Road (opposite URA HQ)

SHC Round Table like SHC itself will function with a minimum of rules and procedures. The main objective is to serve as a business network platform for SHC members who are in business. However, besides entrepreneurs, the group welcomes aspiring entreprenuers, people providing business services, people with an interest in business in general, in short anybody and everybody who feels that there can never be too many business contacts and friends.

The platform is simple. We gather once a month at a designated place, have a good meal (which is an excellent way to break the ice), get to know who is who, who is where, who is doing what and who can complement and synergise with you. Hopefully this free and easy business socialising will bear fruit for some members. If not, at least through purposeful networking, members will get to know one another better.

Later, when a critical mass is achieved dinner talks can be organised (ala Jaycees/Rotary Club). The group can also look into recce trips in the region, familiarising ourselves about the business terrain and different business culture in the surrounding countries, sussing out business opportunities, looking for regional strategic partners and eventually setting up our ‘second wing’.

Why ‘Round Table’? When we dine out in a group here, the table is usually round isn’t it?

  1. This appears to me a more purposeful thread than “Starting 1st October…….SHC Biz Network” which seems a registration desk, otherwise peripheral.

The Cantonese me will ask for a seat at the Round Table in this Cantonese restaurant, whether it’s King Arthur or his moti cousin kinky R2D2 who presides.

Am taking it easy for rest of the Year but will hope to make a resurgence in ’11. So hearing from folks who have already started the Ultimate Hurrah shd help in my desire to introduce a funky Ultimate Party instead of the dour, sad sombre affair it need not be.

Interestingly, if you look at 1 of the “obits” in 2day’s ST, it says that he has “Gone Fishing”. Clearly, he wants to continue living his life……..

Potentially, there’s a huge market out there and it’s all lucrative……..pamper yr friends with a pompous bash.

  2. Good morning Jeffrey! Please register my name for this meetup. Please let me know the estimated cost of the lunch per pax and your bank acct no to tt the money into.

    Thank you
    Ros

  3. What we will do is to split the bill at the end of the night. A good dinner at Moi Lum averages $30 to $40 depending on what is ordered. By the way, it’s dinner not lunch.

  4. Sorry Jeffrey. Dinner it is then. I might have to leave earlier if you guys plan to brainstorm till late at night.

    Cheers
    Ros

  5. Hi I am interested to join in. My name is Peter Tan, husband of Frisna Tan. Please keep me posted.

  6. Good morning to all !

Thanks for kick-start business opportunities for SHC members!
I am unable to join in for the coming business dinner –
I shall do so the next time! Keep going forward !!!

  7. Hi everyone, I just joined SHC. Hope to join the various activities organised by SHCin future. I am a tutor and doing freelance accounting. As most of my evenings and weekends are taken up, I hope that some of the activities would be in the mornings/afternoons weekdays.

  8. Hi Terence

Peter is already a member and received your confirmation letter more than a year ago. so can he join the networking/round table?

  9. Dear Jeffrey Lim,
I will attend the tantalising dinner at Moi Lum on 28th.Oct.Moi Lum’s food is delicious especially its signature dish-the crispy roast chicken and the golden coins beancurd, fragrant shark’s fins, the expensive eight-treasure duck.I have lunched in this Maxwell restaurant before.I enjoyed the succulent food.Looks like I have a share in this restaurant.Thanks.Cheerio!

  10. As all people in business know, the key person in any company is an effective PA. As such Sue Chan has been appointed for this task, to make the necessary arrangements, logistics and all the nitty gritties in organising such an event.

  11. Hello Jeffrey,

Please include my name for this Round Table makan. Thanks. I have never been to the restaurant and am keen to try the food.

    Kim Yin

  12. Great! Sue is the PA! Sweetie, can you please send us an email a week ahead to remind us of the meeting? :p

    Cho kang, cho kang…

    Ros

  13. Hi Sue

Nice of you to take up this appointment. An invaluable asset to the Round Table.

  14. Hi JeffreyL and Sue Chan,

Thank you for taking the lead with SHC Business networking and creating new opportunities for members to network with other business groups.

Round table is an excellent idea and first step. I am not sure which direction or format this initiative will take but your experience and style will defintely make this activity fruitful.

    Thank you again.

    Terence Seah

  15. #18 Rosalind Lee,

I don’t think the job scope of the PA includes reminding members of meeting notwithstanding the fact that she’s a highly paid PA of $00,000.00/month.

Let’s all just check the posts for events and block off the dates in our diary/filofax/Iphone.

  16. Geraldine Dear,

Thank you for your well wishes. I’m just contributing a small part in handling the logistics to ensure a smooth-run of our business meetings, with Jeff spearheading the core project for enthusiastic bizmen/bizwomen within SHC.

    Dear Sister Ros,

Hey, fret not, I’ll ‘cho-kang’ for sure…its imperative that I help to ensure all proper arrangements are met where our business meetings are concerned. And having known you as a frequent Jet-Setter, I’ll send you a gentle reminder to your emailbox.

    Cheers!

  17. Hi JeffreyL and Sue,

Just thinking aloud, do you think it is a good idea to say something against our names, so that others will know what we are interested in? Save a bit of time, during the business networking so that we dont have to figure out what other particpants are thinking off.

I like to start. My interest is “Always looking at opportuities for SilverHairs”.

    Terence Seah

  18. Hi Jeff, may I know if all of us attending this Round Table get-together are to present our biz ideas to all attendees? Perhaps not a biz proposal in detail but at least an inkling of what each member has in mind?

    Cheers
    Ros

  19. #24 Sue Chan,

Swee Sue, I was just pulling your legs. No offence ya?
I’m now in Cancun, Mexico and the yay thing is the hotel has free internet access for all its guests. I brought my mini notebook so I can check on SHC website while I’m here. Shiok!

    Cheers
    Ros

  20. #26 Terence,

What I plan to do is early on in the evening when everybody is there, to have each one 2 minutes ‘air time’ to say what business they are in, what they plan to achieve, what opportunities they have, what strategic partners they’re looking for etc.

We can then compile a little SHC business directory for circulation within the Round Table group.

    #28 Rosalind Lee,

See comment above. I don’t think we can hash out business plans over dinner but what we hope to achieve from this free flowing of ideas is to kindle a nascent business idea. After that it’s up to the persons involved to follow up and that’s when the real hard work begins.

  21. Hi Pauline

From your #11 comment you seem to have some inkling of what you intend to achieve something out of getting involved in SHC activities.
For a start, L would like to pick up from where you have left off. For follow-up, please email me.
    Regards
    Robert Ong

  22. We now have 22 silver entrepreneurs/budding entrepreneurs. See you all tomorrow at Moi Lum. Tip : bring along plenty of business cards.

  23. Hi Anna,

Noted you’re unable to join us this evening. Feel free to join us the next round once a date is fixed for the next biz meeting.

    Cheers,

  24. Thank you Jeffrey for arranging the dinner get-together. The food was good and price very reasonable.

I have a few comments that will irk some but if the objective of SHC’s Round Table meet-up is purely for a social get-together or to sell one’s products/services then the purpose is lost.

I was pissed off with one person’s hard-sell approach in marketing his/her product. His/Her persistency is one huge turn-off! Best part? It was the first time I met this person. Doh

Hopefully Jeffrey will be able to weed out who is genuinely interested to either invest or contribute skills/expertise into developing one or several business ventures.

  25. Thank you all for kick starting the SHC Round Table. Now we know who is doing what and where potential links and synergies are. It’s early days yet, being the first event, but many ideas were thrown forth, chief of which being the favourite amongst SHC members – retirement villages. We also know some of the fellow members’ hopes, aims and aspirations.

The general intention is to keep this group as a business networking group and not let it evolve into a social gathering – we have enough of that in SHC. There’s not going to be any formal structure or development plan but rather to let it grow organically.

Let’s keep the ball rolling. It is now in the hands of Paul Phua who in due course will announce the next round table. Keep yourselves posted.

    #39 Rosalind,

Having been in business for more than a quarter of a century, I myself have come across a whole spectrum of humanity from from the worst to gems of people. I think that being in business, you tend to cast your net wider. So with the fish comes the floatsam. How we deal with other people is a personal matter. Speaking for myself, I try to be tolerant and try to see the good side in everyone, pesky salesmen included.

  26. SHC Round Table November 2010.

I seem to have some trouble posting the next meeting’s details – the text simply disappears when I hit the enter button so I’m posting the details here for the time being. Do keep the date free. Thank you.
