A dance competition

This may sound like a joke from someone who cannot dance and who cannot tell one dance from another.  Well, I have been thinking that if we have a dance competition, it might be something different, from the regular dance events.

Assuming we dream on, and if we have a dance competition, I would think we should have a big round or square dance floor.  Smooth, flat and supposedly for dancing, and contestants gliding and sweeping from corner to corner.  Guests would sit around the dance floor, with the judges somewhere right in front.

Maybe we should have two hosts – a guy and a gal, to introduce the contestants and the judges.  Music would be played in the background.  Then, it would be nice to have an interval where perhaps the guests can dance too.

Now to the dancing bit.  Since there are so many different types of dancing, I would think we can keep this variety open.  So, the Russian dancers and the turkish dancers will get a chance to compete too.  Contestants get a chance to pick their own music.  Great, exciting, how about the taiwanese drama theme song LOVE.  The judges decision is final, altho I think some audience participation is always welcome.

Hmm, must have prizes too.  But, we cannot afford expensive ones.  We have to think about it.  Perhaps, three trophies – diamond, platinum and crystal.

So, we need judges, the two hosts, a dance floor, 3 prizes, some cassette tapes, aiyah no food, just some tea and cocktails, a video camera, and a planner so that the schedule turns out in the right order.  What else do we need?  Oops, I forgot we need the participating dancers.

No date yet, no place yet and no committee yet.  No EO yet.  Please share your ideas?  the crazier, the better.  Dont have to be professional.  Do it the SHC way, some disorganisation is always fun.  Like they say, some cock up is good.

I want to be a Judge; my forte. This sounds like a great way to have fun and getting members to really put their best foot forward.

You should be the other Judge; we’ll have a blast.

A good competition to bring out the best.

  2. Hi GeraldineY,

Sure, if your timing suits, you will be one of the judges. As for me, I have to stay unbiased, as I plan to organise this event. So, not fair for me to be a judge. Very nice of you to kickstart this Dance Competition.

  3. Hi Terence,

I have in mind to put up a Dance Comedy and would need some volunteers for practce. When would be the date?

I am roping in Jeffrey Gan and wife Irene Lee to put up other dance items. Both of them can sing and dance and are also event organiser for other company.

They have just got married in their twilight years just last week and we wish them all the happiness and joy in the coming years!

  4. Hi Terence

As a corollary to your proposition for a Dance Competition, would anyone be interested to organise a Karaoke Singing Competition.

    Robert Ong

  5. Hi Dan,

Thanks for the suggestion. I would prefer to stick closely with a “Dance Competition”, rather than a performance concept. I think it would be nice if we hold the event for non-professional dancers. Would love to see the event for the light-hearted, casual and dance lovers.

Nice to hear that Jeffrey and Irene have just tied the knot. Our good wishes too.

  6. Wei wei…my opinion, should exclude Jeffrey and Irene because both are so good! we can’t beat them lah…and this is competition for non-professional dancers and not performance. ;) What about line dancing, will it be included in this dance competition?

  7. Hi RobertO #4,

SilverHairs love to sing; so a Karaoke singing competition would be great. Please go ahead, look for a place, create the idea and concept, determine the cost and find some assistants to help you. Am sure you will get loads of support.

Then, find a date and time, and invite other SHCians to join you. I will definitely support this event.

We did have a talentime some years ago. Do a search. You should find something there. Have fun.

  8. Here is a call for an SHCian who is a member of the Grassroots country club in Yeo Chu Kang. I heard there is an exciting dance hall there, decorated and suited for a dance competition.

  9. Hi Dan,

  11. Ji Jeffrey or Irene #11,
Would you volunteer to be a judge?

    Hi Ah Nee #6,
I am sure we can put Line Dancing as a category. So, agree, let’s have it.

For those interested in participating in the dance competiton, take it as an enjoyable event. If you can dance, come and participate. I guess some dances can be single or alone and some can be in pairs, while others can be in groups. Think about it, we need some to think about the categories. Someone to help?

    Terence Seah

  12. With Dolly’s “All Britons hv talents”…Terence’s Russian & Turkish dancers….could face stiff competitions from the other dancers doing bollywood, belly-dancing, hip hops, ballet, etc.

Would the participants be segregated into “professional” and “amateur” categories?

  13. Hi everybody and dancers,

I have just communicated with James Tan, and he is at the YCK Grassroots Country Club.

For the moment, I am thinking of Sat Dec 11 or Sat Dec 18, 2010 afternoon. If the dates are available, I shall have it blocked. The venue has a nice dance floor, big enough for 50 pax, a sound system to fit in a laptop and cosy.

We may have a whale buffet lunch, if all goes well. So, let’s wait subject to dates availability.

    Hi Ann,
Sure, we should have categories. But in my mind, I think professionals are just too good. Well, let’s talk further. At least, I think you and Dolly are in favour.

    Terence Seah

  14. Let there also be a category for the absolutely un-danceables. You and me and a dog name Boo fall into this category.

And then, let the professional do a dance with the champion un-done-dancer, and I think it will be roaring fun to watch the exasperation of the professional and the no-idea-what-to-do that says it all on the face of Mr Boo.

    Hehe…………..

  15. I suggest we can organise the dance competition in 3 categories (not able to organise by type of dance bcos there are too many and may not have enough competitors for each type)

    a. solo – can be any kind of dance, eg latin solo, salsa, bachata, hip hop, belly etc

    b. pair – ballroom latin(cha cha, rumba etc), ballroom modern (walze, tango etc), social (RnR, disco rock, salsa etc)

    c. group – eg line dancing, chinese dance, belly dance etc

So at the end of the competition, we will have winners(top 3) for each category and one overall champion.

  16. Excellent and open opinion and discussion on the Dance competition. Thank you, Jane. Effectively, you have helped to set up the categories.

Shall put up these categories in the Post tonight, abd we should start inviting contestants. Now, I am sourcing for the prizes.

    And TimL #15,
I think your suggestion might work. See, you can be serious if you want to. I will seriously consider this item.

    Calling dance contestants.

    Terence Seah.

  17. Hi Terence,

Jane Wong has given a good suggestion in categorising the various social dances into 3 different segments. In support of these exotic latin dances e.g. Bachata, Salsa & Merengue, perhaps you could incorporate these sensual dances to category (b) as these dances do carry a 3-step to 4-step beat, and usually will synchronise well if danced as a pair.

With lots of hip action and rhythmic gyrating of body movements involved, these dances will certainly add more zest to the evening’s competition!

    Cheers!

  18. Wei wei Dolly

You back already? Good to know that. Worried about the typhoon.

You are right. Lucky no one wants me as judge otherwise headache if Sue Chan, Jane Wong, Lily Ho, Susan Tan, Catherine Koh etc participate cos all so good.

Cant wait to watch dancers putting their best foot forward.

I pray and pray it will not be on 18 Dec cos i have something on.

    Cheers
    Carly

  19. Hi Terence,
RE: # 12 No problem, one of us can volunteer together with Geraldine Tay as Judge . Sori to response late as we just return from holiday tonight Cherrio !

  20. Hi Carly #21

Me too eager to attend this event but just like you, hope & hope date is not 18 Dec cos I too have been booked by a friend in early May to help her in some event on that day.

    Cheers!
    Hamidah

  21. Hi Hamidah, Caroline,

I would likely have to decide on the place and date, before the end of this week. This week, got round table, fine dining and then the JB overnight. Follow by two weeks down-under. Taken note of your request too.

  22. Here is an update on the venue of the Dance Competition. I have seen a few places; and todate, the Grassroots Country Club may be where we will have this event. We will confirm the venue by mid Nov 2010.

    Terence Seah

  23. Where a place has grassroots, the place is fertile which nourishes the growth of easy grass like lallangs.

At nite and with thick luxuriant lallangs growing everywhere, it makes changing for contestants from their comfortable shorts and slippers to body hugging pants and high heels easy.

Also, if after the results are announced, those who are left disappointed will find a place to hide and cry thru the nite and it will be fun to see the neighbouring dwellers calling in bomohs and saigons to help……

  24. Hello my dear friends,

First it is a very good idea BUT, Why want to make “susah”. Competion is for people to either make friends or enemies, if it is not organised properly.
You should have qualified judges. Not anyone, who of all you know may not even know about dancing.
Dance adjudicators must be qualified and certified professionals.
If it would be a very big event, you may want to get the judges from Spore Ballroom or Dance Association. This would not cause any problem, if they stick to the standard dance competition rules.
You may even get sponsors from, just to name a few , from World dance Academy, Supadance,Spore Ballroom Dance Association, Sunny Low Dance,Shawn& Glady’s, Michelle and Why Pong Dance World, Wanna Studio, Andre De Silva, Sammy Soo, Steven Han and many more.

It should be organised in a professional way and not “any how” OK. Definitely will support your great idea and looking forward to the event .

Put on your dancing shoes and have fun.

  25. Michelle,

Agreed that having external qualified dance judges/adjudicators
would be ideal. Bring the competition to a professional
level. In short, judges should be given an honor to be invited.

However, I think we should not add undue pressure to Terence
He meant to orgz this event in a fun manner, and lest of a
prestige, so let him have the liberty to have a free hand
    as he deems fit.

Btw, are you able to invite judges from those esteemed
dance schools should the need arises?

  26. SHC activities are organised by SHCians for SHcians and that include participants, performers and I reckon where the need arises, judges as well. We keep within ourselves and value the privacy.

If folks participate to enjoy, then everyone is a winner and “winning” becomes incidental.

Fellow SHCians volunteered or invited to be the judges will certainly do their best as they themselves will be judged by everyone watching the dances.

    ??????????????????????

  27. Back to the dance competition. I hope we can find a place for the Dance competition soon. I thank Tim for his support, Dolly too. While we want to have a competition, the objective is still friendship and fun. So, it will be done and conducted in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

I don’t have a lot of seriousness in everything I do, but I also respect those who have suggested our Dance competition be done properly and professionally. Hope, it will set the trend and format for future SHC Dance competitions.

A few places have been suggested, and I am inclined to take one of them. The date will be dependent on when I am in Singapore and place availability. We will decide by end Nov.

SHCians who would like to participate in the Dance competition, either single, pairs or group, please indicate your interest by raising your hand up by 15 Dec 2010. We close after this date. The event is likely to be held in Jan 2011. Do indicate the type of dance performance. Even if you are not sure.

    Terence Seah

  28. Terence, my support is limited to watching and cheering. I dont dance bcos I cant danz so I wont dance.

But having been diligent, true and faithful to my Mao Shan hoodoo learning over the past weeks, I think I have eyes to tell who the good dancers are, and how straight they can keep their legs and bodies taut, like a Chinese vampire honest to his ability. So without a doubt, group dancing will be great………….

  29. Hi Terence,

Is it possible to firm up the date in Jan 2011?
If you have decided on Grassroots do let me know early
before the date is taken up.

    james
