Food For Thought

I have been reading up on how to avoid heart attack and have found the answer. It is to eat only plant based food. That means not eating anything that moves, including what comes out of them, like milk and eggs.  Doctors have found out that the muck we accumulate in our blood vessels and intestines can be clean up if we eat only plant based food. It will also reduce our excessive body weight, prevent diabetes and avoid cancer.  Your internal organs can actually become ‘younger’.  Mainstream doctors do not like this solution because it will reduce their income from selling you drugs and surgery. More and more retired Doctors are preaching this cure because they have already made their money and can become ‘real ‘ doctors.

But do what I tell you to, don’t do what I do.

This post is to follow up on Kenneth’s idea of sharing  good hawker foods which he posted on Rosalind’s thread which is on the subject of cooking. Please share on this thread of any good hawker stalls you have eaten yourself.

Food is like sex, they taste better if they are forbidden or unhealthy.

  1. I am glad Jurong West St 52 Hawker Centre is voted the best. At least I know I am not the only one who like to eat there.

There is a Carrot Cake stall facing the car park that give you a choice of only white style fried i.e. no black sweet sauce. A family of your brothers runs it. They chop the carrot cakes to pieces, fry them, than make them into cakes again before serving. $2 per plate. Looks uninteresting but taste very good.

  2. Hi Tian Soo
What you read about healthy food is only part of the equation. You have concluded that the panacea for all the illneses caused by living in a first world is to eat only plant-based food. What about circumstantial factors which can make a difference. For example, the cumulative effect of stress derived from a work-related phenomenon can be just as damaging.
Yes. Men are subject to many temptations. The first man who took the forbidden fruit had to pay a terrible price.

  3. Tian Soo,

I always want to be a vegetarian but ‘the sprit is willing and the flesh weak’ In a previous post I advocate to form ‘Vegetarian Anomymous’ but it have not got off the ground.

Instead of focusing where to find the best hawker foods, dun you think it is better to look out where to find the best and healthy vegetarian meals. I am sure that you would find a lot of supporters. At our age we just have to be more careful with oour diets.

  4. Hi All,

I doubt if Chinese style vegetarian cooking is healthy. They use a lot of oil and like to deepfry the gluten, peppering them with 5 spice powder etc to get the taste of the real thing.

If I eat vegetarian, which is like about 1 to 2 times in 2 years, I have to admit prefering Indian vegetarian.

All those interested in having Indian vegetarian lunch late next week, hands up. Can go to a place opposite Mustapha’s in Rowell Rd. Am open to suggestions too. I am open to changing our plans mid-stream as I know there is a “Rajput?” style briyani restaurant in the same area. Briyani is drier and less oily and they put in potatoes to absorb the oil. Of course we can add lamb, chicken etc. They even have vegetables curry. See how fast my resolve changes too. Sorry to spoil your post, Tian Soo (but not your lunch)

So how? Vegetarian? Vegetarian with a wee bit of meat? Just both? More of the same? Anyone game?

  5. Hay guys

I am looking for good hawker food here. I have no panacea for health or interest to promote vegetarianism.

Tell me where are the good hawker food. We can eat and die happy together.

I have tried Charles recommended briyani, it is good, about 8/10 and I am still alive.

I don’t think men are subject to temptation as Robert said. I think we are quite good a creating a few ourselves. I am creating one here.

  6. Hi Dan

Try Fresh+ on Robinson Road, next to Ya Kun’s i.e. only if you like salads. $8.90 for a large bowl with greens and your choice of 6 others and dressing. Selections include brown rice, pasta, boiled potatoes, pumpkin, beetroot, purple cabbage, carrots, lotus root, asparagus, chick peas, kidney beans, cucumbers, broccoli, eggs etc. and even tuna. The outlet serves soup and sandwiches too.

  7. Hello,

Since most people say that sinful foods taste nicer, here are 2 more places that u may want to try.

1.Ghim Moh market’s hawker centre – teochew char kway teow. Man’s wife takes order seriously, no smile or other conversation. Just place order and Kuai kuai stand in q 4 abt half hour or more for your kway teow. Look out for the long q in centre part of hawker ctr.

2.Personally haven’t tried this food stall, cos q 2 long. It is at Clementi ?Blk 327. It is Claypot rice. Perhaps any SHCian who lives in clementi can help give the correct Blk no? This place is a sort of Gluttons’ Rectangle (instead of Sq)situated about the middle of Clementi Aves 2,n 4.

This vicinity also boasts of Botak Jones whose steak is supposedly good. Not far off from the Claypot Rice.
I am not for long qs so never eaten at these 2 places.

Good luck. It shouldn’t be difficult finding these places esp stalls with long Qs. You can see the Qs from afar.

    Geok Suan.

  8. Hi Geok Suan

I have tried the Char Kway Teow at Ghim Moh a couple of times before but cannot appreciate why people have to queue for it. I have tasted many equally good ones.
But on the opposite row of this stall is an Indian Vegetarian stall operated by what looks like a mother and daughter team. Their Thosays and Vedays are very fresh and fragrant, better than any you get from Little India. They have restricted operating hours which I always cannot remember and they are equally unfriendly.

The Claypot Rice at Clementi is very good. You can have a chance to eat if you go before 6pm. You still have to wait because they put some charcoals on top of their gas burners to heat the rice before serving. I think that gives it a bit of burnt flavour which makes it good.

Indian vegetarian food is healthy especially if you eat Idlys only. Claypot rice is healthy but for the oil they put to prevent the rice from sticking to the sides of the pots and also the fat from chicken skin and pork sausages. The black soya sauce is suppose to have anti-oxidant properties.

Char Kuay Teow is healthier than Hamburger if they use lard and not cook them too hot. Hamburgers have trans-fat which are 33% more prone to converting into cholesterol.

Good food is like good women or man, they keep you happy and alive but can also be the death of you.

  9. Hi Charles,

I want to come along, when where?

Tian Soo, you did mention in the post that to avoid heart attacks dun eat anything that moves, how come you are not into eating plant based cuisines and be a good vegetarian? Are you sure that black soya sauce has anti-oxidant properties?

    Thanks Daisy for the tips.

Geok Suan, how about orgaising a group to Ghim Moh, and by the way how was the group you lead to JB by train for the foods there?

Well here we are, eat to live or live to eat either way we die someday, so let’s eat and drink and be merry!

    Dan

  10. Hi Geok Suan/Tian Soon

The 2 places that I will go for Claypot rice are clementi ave 2 blk 328 and the hawker centre opposite Golden Mile. My preference is at golden mile as i find the claypot rice at clementi quite dry……

    cheers

  11. Dan

You ask me a very appropriate question at #9. I also ask myself why do men turn their heads an ogle at sexy women when they walk pass although they may have a good wife at home. I think taste buds are similar to sex hormones…very difficult to control.

I am vegetarian at home because I have no choice. So I balance my diet when I go out.

I should not go around telling people to eat vegetarian when I myself cannot control my urges.

I also warn readers to “do what I tell you to, don’t do what I do.”

There was a research done at our local university that concludes that Dark Soya Sauce have anti-oxidant properties about 2 years ago. I think it was also widely publicized by local media.

  12. In reference to message 9 by Dan Huang:

A study by National University of Singapore shows that Chinese dark soy sauce contains 10 times the antioxidants of red wine, and can help prevent cardiovascular diseases. (However, it is unlikely to be used in nearly as great a quantity as wine.) Soy sauce is rich in lactic acid bacteria and of excellent anti-allergic potential.

    Soy sauce contains ethyl carbamate.

Soy sauce does not contain a level of the beneficial isoflavones associated with other soy products such as tofu or edamame. It can also be very salty, having a salt content of between 14%–18%. Low-sodium soy sauces are produced, but it is difficult to make soy sauce without using some quantity of salt as an antimicrobial agent.

  13. HI Dan @ #9,

Any time Dan. For a start we can meet at an MRT, drive there in 1 car, you know how parking can be a hassle, and take a walk down Rowell Rd/Desker Rd and eat what we fancy on that day. We can have Indian vegetarian, sinful Hyderabad briyani, laksa mai hum, for those who like ‘hums’, can do too but no ‘mee siam mai hum’ around. For starters we can have ‘bao-bing’ or rojak. Dessert we can try some Malay dessert close by.

What say you? I am all ears

  14. Hi Freda @ #10,

I have tried the Clementi claypot rice and enjoyed it tremendously as I have a liking for claypot rice. But have never been back as I could not stand the waiting. The lady boss is quite a food nazi too. In fact I think the ‘char kway teow’ and tosai cooks are all food nazis.

If you say the Golden Mile is better than I would like to try it. Where exactly is it? In Golden Mile Complex? Or at the hawker centre opposite the GM Complx? Where all the NS boys go to buy their uniforms etc? If so I think that place has 2 floors. Can you be more specific? I am getting hungrier as I type this. I still remember the first time I had claypot rice in Bugis Str, cooked labouriously by a very old lady. I never knew rice could be so full of flavours and be so tasty. Bless that old lady, Bugis Str is gone and so is she. May she RIP.

  15. Hi Tian Soo

Not only men succumb to temptations. Women too.
I normally dont eat fried food but once in a while I indulge in cha kway teow no hum. I like the Hill St cha kway teow at the hawker centre opp block 18 Bedok South Road. Must eat it there cos I da bao once and it was soggy.
Also, at the same place, the jiu hir eng chai is also cheap and good. There is also this fried hokkien mee that I enjoy. The hawker fries the noodles thoroughly and let the stock seep into the noodles.

Dan, if you want to go on healthy vegetarian, then you have stir fried veggies with little oil or green salad with balsamic vinegar or vinaigrette dressing. Like what Charles said is true. Chinese vegetarian has a lot of deep fried stuff and gluten and their veggies are usually soaked in oil.

The best beef rendang i have tasted used to be at Siglap but now its moved to Bedok South :)

    Cheers
    Carly

  16. Hi Dan

After you, Charles and others have visited Desker Road, you may want to atone for your sins by eating at a restaurant call 7 Sansation at the far end of Madras Street. It is a ‘Fusion’ vegetarian restaurant. About 4 star ambient and food that you will not know are vegetarian unless someone tell you. About $20 per head for a good meal. They have enzyme drinks to help you clean your tummy.

  17. Well documentated Tian Soo…especially your last sentence. All men love that…I like to repeat your statement…Sex is like food..the more forbidden, the more enchanting. Sorry, I change a little lah. Cannot resist leh!

But in true seriousness…Since I disciplined myself on meditation and strictly on vegan food with a touch of fish and a little white meat, my general disposition has greatly enhanced..’every part of my body’…You should know what I mean but because ‘enough is enough’..I view sex at my age as just having another cup of tea…

But I know you are the authority on matter-SEX…so i got alot to learn from you and many of your posting are with sex connotations…hahahaah! But don’t tell people: do you still experience “Mari Kita”(patriotic)every morning. I do you know…another cup of tea!!…lah!

When darkness fall, heaven’s angels are all recall
Hell broke loose to the fantasty of ecstasy
The joy of two souls in one
Oblivious of the illicit loves of hell.

Who cares what hell is about
My peformance of love is all I care
And when it comes to Sex without ‘borders’
Darkness is the evil of orgasmic sorrow !

Men excommunicate themselves of the marriage creed!

An inspiration by Tian Soo’s “provocation”…hahaah!

    Regards.

  18. Hi Patrick

My body is quite well rested each morning because I have enough ‘tea’. You should try that.

Do recommend some good food place here if you have any.

  19. HI Tian Soo,

I enjoy reading your post with interesting and humorous “sexy” comments.

Just to share what you guys/gals have been missingin your diet ,
    Herbal CATFISH soup anyone ?

Surprisingly, most Sporeans gave the “yuk” remark that it is a loong kang ( drain /sewage ) fish, v. filthy and unhygienic. However, catfishes nowadays are farmed and kept in big aerated tanks that fed on dead chicken or duck parts or offals. Isn’t nature wonderful, the fish is able to extract all the dead and rotten flesh consume to be use as their body parts. I can attest to this as I am still healthy and still in 1 piece as I cooked the fresh catfish soup at least once a fortnight as the fish meat and the soup is naturally sweet even without MSG ( moe tak theng.)
( Eating is believing.) :) Not 1 time did I suffer from diarrhoea or food poisoning from my own cooking. I have been searching high and low around the whole of Spore but none of the hawker centres or restaurants sell herbal catfish soup. And so no choice have to cook myself to enjoy this delicious food.

There’s an interesting discussion in this month’s “Journal of the American Dietetic Association.” What it boils down to is this: Is the fatty acid mix in catfish and tilapia healthy or harmful? The debate has even reached the popular press. Why all the fuss?

First off, since 2000, catfish and tilapia rank as two of the most popular fish consumed in the United States thanks mainly to their taste and relatively low expense. And both contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Consumption of these types of fatty acids is thought to be associated with reduction in blood pressure and reduced risk for certain cancers, inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, and even mental decline. 1 ) To know more pls. click http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/tilapia/MY00167.

    2) How to cook herbal catfish soup and its TCM benefits , pls. click

Sorry, must attend to my catfish soup now.

  20. If you enjoy Coffee, go and try the Vietnamese Coffee at the V/cafe on Amoy St. They serve coffee in the traditional filter-over-cup style. The coffee is strong and tasted havenly, both when taken hot or drank cold after it has been chilled in a cup of ice. I could not figure out what flavours were blended into the coffee, cinnamon or vanilla. However, it was certainly a very beautiful combination. Will guarantee to provide you a night of alertness too.

  21. Hi StevenC #19

I am glad you are not talking about sex here although I know you have the biggest Karma Sutra book in your house.

Fish are generally healthy food but in recent years more and more are farmed like other meat animals. There are 2 problems associated with farmed animals.

To be commercially viable these animals have to be kept in a dense environment. So any sickness on one animal gets quickly spread to the whole population. But science have an answer, feed the animals with antibiotics before they get sick. So the more antibiotics the farmer puts the safer is his crop. Some scientist believe that remnants of antibiotics can be transfered to human who eats these animals.
The problem with consuming antibiotics is that your body can mutate to resist this foreign substance and your doctor needs to give you stronger and more lethal antibiotics to cure you when you need it. The farmed animals can also mutate to resist new antibiotics so the farmer have to use more powerful antibiotics to be affective. It is a vicious cycle.
The second problem is from the use of growth hormones. They can make the animals grow faster, hence more profits for the farmer. Again some of these growth hormones can be transferred to us who eats them. But we may not just grow bigger like the animals, some of us gets hormonal imbalances. That is why we will have to accept same sex marriages sooner than we think.

So Steven, keep eating you Catfish and Tilapia, they are indeed good food, but if the men in SHC starts to look beautiful to you ……Stop

  22. Hi Tian Soo, StevenC, HC and Patrick, Caroline and Freda, Tim, Charles, and those who are free on a weekday,

I am more game when it comes to game food. Anybody game for turtle soup. Not too sure if it helps, but I am of the belief that if turtles can live a few hundred years, we can probably live longer too, if we eat them.

However about the one in Geylang? On Thurs 12.30pm, 25 Nov 2010. And, AndrewK, if you are free, and you suggest any place, near Genting lane, it would be suitable too.

    Coming?

    Terence Seah

  23. Hello Everyone who has contributed to the above food for thought discussion, I enjoy reading this thread.

Btw Tian Soo, the Indian tosai and varday stall is or used to be run by 2 sisters. I used to do saturday morning walks at 5.30am from home to Ghim Moh market with a neighbour. We would park ourselves at her stall and wait for her tosay cum varday. One would never enjoy any other “flour” varday in Singapore after eating this stall’s(just after it is fried). It has a crispy, crispy skin with soft, tasty, lightly spiced inner bun. Not if one gets it cold.

Since you like Carrot cake, try too the chai thow kuay next to the chwee kuay stall. The Lady fries the white version with egg while the g/man does the black soya version. The black version, carrot cake is cut too small and diff to pick up with chopsticks. Use fork if one likes the black version. Still in GM hawker ctr.

The Dodo fish cakes are also good. Charles, this one is also what you would call a food nazi too. Just state the $.. you want, he wraps them for you, hands them over, pay money and move off. In GM Hawker ctr.

Clementi Hawker ctr just renovated. Took ?HDB 9 months to complete. Most of the Old Hawkers are back and I have noticed that prices have upped a bit. Never mind we don’t eat there everyday or at least for me.
Try the Hakka Yong Thow Hoo which also has long, long Q. Only starts selling at abt 11am another of the no talking, pick your items den wait for it to be cooked.

The Chook or porridge is also good. Not too watery. Fish porr has good amt of slivers of fish meat.Don’t know the latest price/bowl. Abt 30mins Q-time.Clementi H/Ctr.

Mei Ling St (Queenstown area) Hawker ctr. Sum Kee Chicken Rice is good.Rice,Ginger sauce are good.Ask for less fatty chicken.

    That’s all for now folks.

    Dan,
Yat Sing, my son and I took the train to Kluang (not JB crime rate worries me) one Sat last month. Train left Tanjong Pagar at 8am Arr Kluang abt 10.50am. We had approx 3hrs for brunch and quick shopping no sight seeing, caught the next train abt 2pm for home. Went by 2nd class and returned by 1st class. We were met by my niece who drove us around. We wouldn’t have been able to shop with the 3hrs if we hadn’t the local person who knows the places to eat and shop.

We didn’t go to the Rail Cafe in town but chose to eat chinese roasts, quite good as Yat Sing who’d just come back from the US hadn’t had enough time to acquire the taste for “hot ” meals yet. Give her more time , am sure she’ll be asking for more chillie padis.

Please keep this thread alive with more food for thought.Tks.

    Geok Suan.

  25. Hi Tian Soo,

    1) Thanks for your comment #22. V.Shocking indeed to learn that these fish breeders think abt more profit with little regard for human health.

Now I better listen to big brother Tian Soo before I start to develop ” breasts” ha! ha~ and eat my catfish soup perhaps once a month rather than fortnightly. However, it is hard to resist the temptation of eating the delicious catfish soup once you have tasted it just like the forbidden fruit.

    2) Hi all,
    a) I had tasted and like to highly recommend to shcians if you happen to be in Clementi , the v. delicious Katong laksa at this particular Clementi coffeeshop just opposite the sports complex . I asked the lady boss how come so delicious and she says she uses fresh pure coconut milk in her gravy. No wonder her laksa is so lemak and so shiok.

Happened to be at Bra… cafe for capuccino and pop over to mph bkstore to browse. This book was written by a mak salleh who claims that pure coconut milk is healthy and that is why there is not many cases of heart attacks in the South Pacific islanders whose main diet comprise of coconut. However, those eating Western fast processed food have a higher incidence of heart diseases as statistics have revealed. Tian Soo true ?

    b) Savour the famous rojak stall next to OCBC bank in Clementi. Always has long q and is halal.

    c) Lately, 2 Taiwanese bubble teas stalls called Koi and OK sprout up in Clementi and again v. long q and must take q no. Apa macham ?

    d) The chicken claypot stall at Blk 2 again long q but not that delicious and v. small portions. $15 for 2 pax and I am still hungry after that.
Never visit them on a Sat evening , the waiting time can be as long as 1h . Ridiculous waiting time . :(

    e) Botak Jones at Clementi :- Was curious to join the Long Q but nothing so great. Disappointed ! Its taste was mild and its burger is huge in size when compared to other Mac D or Burger K burgers. Other than that nothing special.

  26. Tian Soo…two place of quality vegetarian food: one at Coronation Plaza, called ‘Miao Yi’ on the third Level…very good and tasty..many choices…no deep fried..Restaurant setting. Some SHC members had dined there before when we held a lunch there many months ago!!

Another place of ‘vegan organic food’ in western-oriental setting….one order $6/- to $8/- per portion..high quality food. Have dined there a few times. This Thursday (24th) will be dining there with my old friend with wife and my wife again. The cosy place is aircond. at 325 Beach Rd…’LivinGreens’, all organic…Tel 6396 5523…opposite The concourse. Parking may be a problem ..

There are other ‘sinful’ good food near there like the famous ‘big prawn mee’ and the famous ‘bak kut teh’. It is your take to dine ‘hearty and merry’ if you are thinking of re-marry…hahaah! Check for ‘Visa’ approval first…???

  27. Terence, you called out my name in #25 when I havent spoken in this thread.

Well, if you are prepared to keep and feed me for a year, out of your $1,000 retirement fund, why not? I eat very simply – abalone bile and shark’s fin eating off the fish’s back which means you hv to wrestle with it and hold it while I eat.

Your target will be to help me regain my lost 10 kg.

  28. Hi Terence @#23

Thanks but no thanks. Would have considered taking half a day leave if it was for some other food.

I dont take turtle soup and also, I dont want to live till too old. I dont mind if its other sinful food like bryani, bbq stingray etc.

Btw, there is this vegetarian restaurant called Naive on East Coast Road that serves delicious food. A bit pricey but the food is very good. Love the lemon grass rice and brown olive rice. The dishes are not those run of the mill kind.

    Cheers
    Carly

  29. Hi Charles #14

Yes it is the hawker center opposite Golden mile where all the NS boys go to buy their uniforms, the crowded claypot rice stall is near the toilet on the 2nd floor. I hv misplaced the contact I usually ring to order first. There is another claypot rice stall at 639 Geylang, lorong 33, they are closed on monday, tel: 67444574.

    enjoy……….

  30. Hi Terence @ #23,

If I am not wrong the turtlr soup place in Geylang, Lor 17 (or 19) might be closed every Thur. You can take the risk and meet there but if it is closed you can still try the one in Geylang, Lor 35. Can try try duck rice too. Otherwise if you are a Tai Seng purist, you have to travel to MacPherson Rd, opposite the old, now demolished Jackson Centre.

Why don’t all interested parties meet at Aljunied MRT at 12.15pm and sort it out? My car can take 3 passengers. Either Wed, Thu or Fri. That shop is always satisfactory but costs $52/bowl for 2. The one in Lor 35 is cheaper ($22/bowl for 1).

Dan and Tian Soo, fancy some long-life turtle soup?

Fredalim @ #30, Thanks for the heads-up. Will try it one day. Are they open in the day for lunch? Will satisfy your love for turtle soup on your behalf this week.

    Geok Suan @ #24,

Thanks for all the recommendations. Will try one day when I am in the area. Will forgo the fish balls tho’. No mood for food nazis. Have heard many wonderful things about the Tosai there and they look very healthy and are always freshly made, but still not used to vegetarian cuisine. I have a deepseated, traumatic experience from young when I made the mistake of eating vegetarian dimsum, not realising they were not the real ‘thing’. I have not been able to shake off my shock since then.

  31. Geok Suan,

Thanks for the response, look good to organize a group up to Klang for good foods and shopping. If I know someone over there in Klang I may plan a trip there by train for a change!

This post is getting more and more interesting. Thanks Tian Soo for brightening up our appetite for delicious foods and fellowahip.

Hou Chong. I agrees that the Vietnamese coffee is really good. Was at Franchise Fair at Marina Sands, the franchise fees seem affordable!

Charles, just name a date and I will be there at Desker Road. Would also like to join in for the turtle soup… temptation, temptation from all corners. Not to miss as I heard it may prolong life and more importantly it is regarded as an aphrodisiac!

    Dan

  32. halo seior tian soo ,geok suan & all food lovers ,

  33. StevenC #26

You are probably referring to the book ‘China Studies’ by Colin Campbell. I have lent CharlesC a copy. I think if he reads the book it will be whilst eating his oily Bryani with fresh beef from USA. I notice a copy on MPH shelf facing the Bra. Cafe.

Yes fresh coconut milk are healthy. I have no chemistry training, the limited knowledge I know is that the molecular structure of oil from coconuts are so different from our body cholesterol that it is impossible for them to be transformed into the latter. But this does not include the ones we get from supermarkets in Tatra packs. The packed ones are highly processed and contain many chemicals that are not good. Unfortunately they are all over our food now.

    Terence

Thursday is my golf day. I can only join you at night after golf.

  34. Hi Tian Soo, I have a strong desire for many things, and one of them is turtle souppe. Cannot wait, so got to have a bowl soonest. We go next week, Thur 25 Nov. again. We have also Andrew Koh confirmed too.

Hi CharlesC #32, meantime, let’s agree to meet and have turtle souppe lunch on thurs 18 Nov, around 12.15pm. Let’s confirm this timing, and let’s try to fix the place. At least, both of us are confirmed. So, it’s you and me.

    Terence Seah

  35. Terence, Charles, AndrewK, HC and Dan

May you all live for ten thousand years.

How come the girls don’t want to live long or what? I think they also need boosters.

    Dan + Geok Suan

Going by train to eat in Malaysia sound like a novel idea. I’ll join if you organize.

  36. Hi Terence,

Ok. I pick you up from your house at 12.15pm this Thu and we will sort out which Turtle shop is opened for that day.

Dan, you have the option of leaving your car at my place at 12noon or meeting us at Aljunied MRT at 12.30pm. Desker Rd vegetarian food will have to be delayed

Any others interested? Sam? Andrew Thio/Koh/Yeung? Lee HC? I can assure satisfaction.

    Geok Suan,

Can arrange SP-Kluang trip next week (Mon or Wed?)? Does the train travel everyday or only on some days? We need your help to replicate your gourmet adventure. I only know the Assam curry fish as recommended by Paul Kong. But I also know that it is not walking distance from the train station. I don’t mind driving too but that would take away the train ride.

  37. Charles
Afraid that I’m in HK Thurs. In fact, I should be huffing & puffing my way up the mountains whilst you guys gorge yourselves. Just remember hungry me as you tuck in. :)

    Enjoy yourselves.

Btw, just to add to this list of hawker places. I like the rojak over at Whampoa Market and Old Airport Road Hawker Centers.

    cheers

  38. Hi Terence , Charles, Tian Soo
I shall give Turtle soup a miss. Thank you. You guys enjoy yourselves.
Good idea to take a train ride into M’sia , even if it was just for the scenery. Will join in too if the date is suitable.
    HC

  39. Dan @ #40,

We have not settled on which stall will be opened. First choice, Lor17 or Lor19. If closed then Lor 35. When we get there I will sms you. Okiedoke?

  40. Hello SHCian makan makan Kakis,

I didn’t mention the assam pedas in Kluang cos I thot that most would go for less spicy foods. Yes, Paul Kong is right. There is a assam pedas in town.A Malay couple sells it from abt 10am to noon then packs up and balik kampong indefinitely. We called at their stall but it was shut. There is another one at the pondok “shack” at the side of Kluang’s railway station. Quite good too for assam pedas.

Sorry Charles, am unable to oblige a trip to Kluang 4 sometime. I need to shuttle to and fro KL more often now. Also, niece with transport will be away from Kluang til early 2011. I shall remember to inform when there is another opportunity. Don’t drive there unless you know where exactly those makan places are located. Too tiring to drive there and back.
Same train that goes to KL, goes to Kluang daily @ 8am from Tanjong Pagar station. All senior citizens – Malaysians and others, are entitled to discounts if one produces his/her ic or ppt when purchasing the ticket.Buy only 1 way cos you pay in Sing here, upon arr, before leaving Kluang stst for makan makan, remember to buy the return ticket “1st class” and pay in Ringgit ask for S/C discount.
Come July 2011, the train station will be moved to woodlands.

Enjoy the turtle soup guys, any ladies?

    Geok Suan.

  41. Hi Geok Suan @ #44,

Is there anything nice to eat around the station? Mee-rebus? Kopi? Satay? Roti Jala?

What is qualifying age for SC?

Going to KL? Steven Chan sent me a list of food places in KL. Can recommend the Jalan Imbi, opposite the Chinese “Overseas Restaurant”, there’s a kopi shop selling breakfast, noodles, porridge, even char kway teow and custard tarts. Nearby there’s the well-known Bak Kut Teh shop and 1 block down there’s a Cantonese ‘zichar’ stall, open at night. (Actually 2 Cantonese zichar stalls, with the same NAMEs). They are bros and sisters in competition. Very good ‘wok-hei’ style cooking. Many KLns know of that place. Also within walking distance is Jalan Barat, some more zichar stalls. Just eating there will take you 2 days. Enjoy. Thanks again Steven Chan.

Hi Ah Nee @ #45, this lunch is open to all but I know quite a no. of ladies are squeamish about Turtle soup. You and your gang and others are more than welcome.

  42. Hi Charles @#47,

Would like to come for the turtle soup but too far from my office otherwise I can join u all for lunch.

Deskar Rd vegetarian food, can I join in??

    Debbie

  43. Hi All,
Since the train derailed at Bt Timah, was told dat train service will be not available but cant remembered how long the unavailability is, pls check for further info hor… Cheers.. Dolly

  44. When comes to food, my eyes open wide wide but I could only read your excitement from hk. Yes, I recalled the taste of my favourite turtle soup at Jackson Centre…Yummy! I like the skin best…good for collagen!

    Charles & others,
I also used to go to one at Lor 36 (corner of Guillemard Road and Lor 36). Not sure if you are referring to the same shop as in Lor 35. Hope you don’t go to the wrong side of Geylang Road. Enjoy!

  45. Hi IvyL,

When you come down to Singapore, let’s go to the turtle soup shop at Guillemard. Haven’t seen you for half a century. Very nice to hear from you. And, I will always remember the HK dim sum shop, which had a spit toon, right spelling or now, below the table. See you sometime.

    Hi Tian Soo, CharlesC, #37,

If turtles can live a thousand years, let’s go for it. I was just thinking this morning that nowadays, we dont eat turtles, because they are hard to come buy and expensive. Instead, the shops have terrapines, small tiny fellas. These guys have a shorter life, say a year, before they go into the soup. Aiyah, let’s see.

    Terence Seah

  46. Yes Terence

Nowadays it is not possible to get regular supply of wild turtles. What we eat are farmed Soft-Shell Turtles or Terrapines. The ‘shells’ are edible as well.

The farmers feed them with lots of hormones so they grow quickly.

If you eat them every week you may be like some fishes that change sex during their lifespan. You can be Terence for the 1st thousand years and Tina for the next thousand years.

    Ho Boh?

  47. Hello Charles and all,

    Reply to Charles’ 2 Questions:

    1. Qualifying Age for S/C rail ticket discount – 60 years old.

2.Kluang Station serves nasi lemak, mee siam, boiled eggs, curry puffs, kaya bun, tea and Kopi. This station or its new name, “Rail Cafe” is made famous by its kopi-O and Kaya bun. It has a bigger outlet in town and the latter has all that you seek to eat,I suppose, cos my niece said that they have lots more of makanan there that the station cafe can’t accommodate.

As the story goes, the late Sultan of Johor would send his driver over to Kluang to buy the kopi powder for his daily beverage drink. I have drunk the coffee at the station many times but because I am not a serious coffee drinker hence can’t differentiate Kluang kopi from starbucks’ coffee, nor the local coffee-shop kopi.
The Vietnamese Arabica coffee that my friends and HC like so much, did not have an impact on my taste buds/senses. Perhaps I didn’t drink the correct Arabica with vanilla or other essences added to it like what HC mentioned. Will try Arabica again someday.
For now, am happy drinking the “2 in 1″ Owl brand or ‘2 in 1” Gold Roast brand, with less sugar from NTUC.

Stay Happy dreaming of foods ( food for thought right?) until it hits your palate soon with turtle soup. Wonder how many bowls of turtle soup one needs to consume to enjoy longevity. Homework for Terence.

    Geoksuan.

  48. halo ah charles chua ah #38 ,

  50. Hi Debbie @ #48,

No problem. Can try Desker Rd next week. Let’s see which dates are suitable. How about you Dan?

    Hi Ivy @ #50,

Haven’t heard from you for some time. Are you visiting Sgp again? Do you know that a SHC group has left for HK to trek on some islands there? Arranged by the YMCA, HK. Quite serious stuff as they had to go for prep training etc. But am sure they will carry the SHC flag high.

The turtle soup place we might go is in Lor 35. Your stall is the one with fried turtles. Also very delicious. Perhaps can save for dinner sometime.

Keep in touch as there will be some trips next year. See how healthy our friend TS is now, even without turtle soup. Can go on for 100 years.

    Good weather in HK?

Hi Geok Suan @ #53 again,

Thanks for all the info. Heard about Kluang long time ago when my friend told me about Sgpns going to Kluang by train for mee-rebus (or mee siam) and kopi and coming back. But back then no friends to travel with. Now got SHC. Will checkout the train schedules this week and inform people to make a quickie trip. Can give better directions to the ‘assam pedas’ fish stall or not? What else is good in tha stall?

If in KL and near Jln Imbi, try out the Cantonese coffee shop I wrote about. Look for the one with the lady owner.

    Sam @ #54,

Alamak, we have to eat 2 meals every day. Sure can find time to go. Now your Dolly also free, can keep you co. Just call me and arrange. I can call the others. Otherwise canalso go to JB for exotic meats. Have not tried mousedeer and porcupine. You now the place right? I nono but am available. Waiting for your call.

  51. Hi Charles,

I am open, do let me know when we can meet next week for Indian vegetarian foods.

#42,43 this is hilarious, nobody realize that two porkies are giving out mating call. They are considering turtle stew before their rendezvous, haha!

    Dan

  52. Hi Charles Chua @ 47,

U r welcome. The list of Makan Sutra restaurants or food stalls was compiled by my nieces and nephews living in KL.

Now the latest fad is they have mobile vans that ply around after midnight outside discos, night clubs or KOKs and they sell all kinds of fresh sea food like cut cuttle fish pieces string onto a stick, fish balls on sticks, veggies, cut crunchy pig umbilical cords pieces (sedap ) on stick, etc.

Self service cooking by dipping them into v.hot boiled water for a few mins until cooked and then dip in brown gravy and chili sauce/ vinegar. U may also request for bbq satay bee, lamb or pork.

You can hire the whole mobile van filled with fresh sea food for 500 Ringgit for the night with the driver helping out to refill the stick sea food.

Isn’t it wonderful if SHC can hire them for our D n D next yr ? Unfortunately, there is no such mobile vans selling sea food here. :)

  53. Hi Terence @ #51,
We can visit that old dim-sum restaurant again the next time you are here. This place is getting more popular than before as I see more ladies and tourists eating there now.

    Hi Charles @ #56,
I didn’t know an SHC group is coming for the trekking. Thot it was only Rene and her own friends. I’m still waiting for Rene’s response on fb. HK has very scenic mountains and seaview. Weather is excellent – perfect timing for mountain trekking.

Turtle soup – I’m not aware of the one at Lor 35. Will try out one day. Thanks for the update.

Do let me know if you are working on any interesting trips. TS is not only healthy, he is getting younger and more vibrant each time I see his photo. That’s the way, man…keep it up!

  54. Hi StevenC #58,

Whenever I go to Golden Mile, I see plenty of tourists preparing to go to KL in nice big coaches. Think they sit 44 people, and seat booking can be done a week ahead. Saves driving. Perhaps, one day, we can all go there, book an entire coach to KL and try the entire Food Sutra. Just eating. I suspect you also know some new, clean, very central and good value hotels.

    Terence Seah

  55. Hi All,

This is a trip report. Terence, Dan and I met for lunch in Geylang. True enough, the Lor 21 (Ser Seng) shop was closed , it being a Thur. So we proceeded to Lor 35. Rating by Terence, only 4/10, (F), Dan, also (F). Only I thot it was good/acceptable and gave it a 6+/10.

There you have it. I better not say too much as SHC palates are more discerning than I thot.

Dessert at Rochor soya bean shop, (in Geylang) was good, no complaints except PRC employee insisted I speak PRC Chinese in Sgp. Must vote against FT system lest I be left out of my own country. (Opinion strictly personal)

Then left for train station to get train schedule.

Lily @ #62, we are gg on a weekday, can you spare the leave? No worries, this trip easy to arrange.

  56. Hi Charles C,

I am clearing some of my vacation leaves bit by bit and happen to take it next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. When are your eating? I can join you all to eat anything except beef, mutton, lamb, turkey….hehehe… :)

    Ah Nee

  57. Haha!

Looks like no one’s been able to come up with a good place to eat exotic meat. And that palates differ make it so much more difficult.

    Here’s my reommendation:

Jalan Bersih food centre, off Jalan Besar and near enough from Desker Road if you find that place unsavoury (joke).

Here you can have turtle soup, crocodile meat, Chinese mutton soup, fish soup (with the rudest hawker I know), maybe even kangaroo. There are also a couple of che char stalls.

So take your pick; I only cannot guarantee that all the stalls will be open on the day you visit.

  58. Hi Charles #32
Don’t think the claypot stall are open during lunch time.

    Hi Kenneth #66

Now that u mentioned i will try the turtle soup at Jalan Besar Hawker Centre when i am around there, I was told the stall was formerly from Golden Shoe hawker centre.

    cheers

  59. Hi Kenneth

You like exotic meat? I know of one coffee shop in my neighbourhood that serves Wild Boar, Crocodile, Monitor Lizards, Pythons, Civet Cats and whatever, if you order in advance. It is illegal off course.

I don’t recommend it here because I have tried it and they taste horrible. Maybe the meat is rotten because no one checks or monitor quality. There were also a few sick dogs and cats loitering around. Maybe that is the ‘farm’.

I just had coffee there and notice they have cleaned up the place. Maybe we will get real exotic meat now.

  60. Terence, Andrew Koh

Are we on for turtle soup on Thursday 25th.? I have cancelled my golf game so we can have lunch or dinner. You all decide where to eat.

Anyone else wants to join in?

  61. Hi TS,

Heard you calling. Terence and I would be going this Thurs 25 Nov to Ser Seng Turtle Soup Restaurant, Tai Thong Crescent, Off MacPherson Road, Opp the old Jackson Centre. We meet in the restaurant at 12.15pm. It can be very crowded during lunch time and it is better to be there early. Calling other turtle soup lovers, come and join us. AK

  62. HI Debbie @ #59,

Watch this space for next week’s Indian vegetarian lunch in Desker Rd. I have smsd Dan and will arrange a suitable date.

    Cheers

  63. Yesterday 5 virile men went to eat turtle soup. There were no female virgins with us. Not even any well experienced women from SHC was there.

We often complain that there are not enough male participants in SHC activities. But here are 5 men making an effort to increase our virility for the benefit of the women but none were there for us.

Boys, the next time, we go and eat Ice Kachang. Maybe the girls here prefer us Cold.

  64. Hahaha!!

Five guys eating turtle soup at Desker Road… ooops, sorry… it’s Macpherson. Don’t be surprised that there are no female virgins around. The whole place is a mess with all the road/flyover construction going on; I bet the soup comes laden with cement dust… yes, it’s not pepper floating on top of your bowl.

I had better luck at the Jalan Berseh food centre… I mean with the food not the women. Three turtle soup stalls, one mutton soup, one fish soup with bad attitude, cold pig trotters and shark meat, AND, if you’ve survived all that, wash it down with coffee (I suggest eggs and kaya bread for breakfast) at the Coffee Hut: yes, he’s the guy who paid $3,000 to learn how to make a good cup of coffee.

If that’s not enough cholesterol for you, cross the road for beef ball noodles, Sungei Road laksa, and yes, you can walk to Desker Road where you may find virgins.

  65. Kenneth #78

No wander we don’t see you around nowadays. Nice to know that you are still up and about and with vigour.

Can you bring us around your haunt some day? We need your knowhow.

  66. Tian Soo

Wander around no more… yes, I’m still up and about… but the vigour part?? not so sure. Haha!

Yes, for sure, I’ll be happy to have you guys join me anytime for lunch or coffee, or lunch and coffee.

If we end up at Desker Road, then for sure we’ll have some virgins… MALE virgins, that is.

  67. Hi All,

We are meeting again this Wed at 12.15 pm to eat our once-a-year vegetarian lunch. We will meet at the restaurant, Ananda Bhavan Vegetarian Restaurant. It is located opposite Mustafa’s, along Syed Alwi Rd.

All are welcomed. Please post your confirmation in this post. So far we have Dan Huang, Tian Soo, Hou Chong and myself confirmed. Debbie Ho, please tell us if the timing is suitable and we will wait for you at the restaurant before we start.

Look forward to having a lovely, healthy and conversation-laden lunch. BTW vege lunches are also known to cleanse your toxins, aid to weight-loss, improve your complexion, cleanse your colon plus myriad other benficial side effects.

    Cheers till then.

  68. Alamak Charles C, lunch this Wed “tak boleh” lah. Have to “cho kang”. Think you are on Food for Thought regularly, shall wait for another one. :)

    Ah Nee

  69. Hi Ivan @ #87,

Welcome, welcome. You are right, If anyone wants to eat vegetarian more often, just go to the Buddhist Lodge at Kim Yam Rd. They serve lunch and dinner everyday, for all. Have dessert too.

Last week I went to Ananda Bhavan, to recce the place and to also have dinner there. After I walked in I lost my nerve. I decided my ‘fast’ would have to be deferred. One ‘fast’ per annum was sufficient. So excuse me if I eat like a bird on Wed. My journey as a ‘monk’ will have to wait.

BTW I think Ananda Bhavan is a BYO restaurant. So if you feel like having some different kind of ‘spiritual’ sustenance, feel free, go with the flow, like Terence always say. GT can join you, she is into ‘spirits’, the liquid kind.

And not forgetting a warm welcome to Steven Chan, Yatsing, Debbie and Geraldine too.

  70. Thank you Charles for organising the Vegetarian Lunch. I thought Vegetarian Food include fish, egg and of other mammals which are not on a meaty diet..hehe. I was wrong of course but not disappointed, the food is really nice and the company, excellent.
    HC

  71. Eleven of us came for the vegetarian meals which consists of rice, naan or thosai. Indeed vegetarian meals can be quite filling! On the wall of the restaurant was written that ‘ the stamina of a camel, the strength of an elephant and the beauty of a horse are all sustained on a vegetarian diet’ Would you believe that, I guess it may be good for them but we are human of a higher species!

I wonder whether this ‘fast’ was a once a year affair for most of us. After lunch we adjourned to Jalan Berseh for the well known coffee recommended by Kenneth. The chatting went on for quite a while, after which we were tempted to scout around as to wat we should gather again next week for that special lunch.

Jalan Berseh is well known for it turtle soup, mutton soup, black chicken soup, black and white fish soups and stew crocodile! We went to check out a stall that is famous for whale meat in gelatin and pig’s intestines, we sense that our meals was incomplete and start ordering three different dishes whch were ‘ mo tak teng’, so much for the vegetarian meals which we had two hours earlier, the temptation was too great!

Watch out, next week we shall meet here again.

    Dan

  72. Hi Hou Chong,

Thanks for your nice compliments to all who attended. Like this you cannot have an Indian Jain girlfriend, they are strict vegetarians, ie 100% vege for all meals, no eggs even.

But I was surprised you did not try the ‘mo tak teng cold dish’. It is a very typical Teochew dish with the typical ‘sng nee chou’ that was selling in the Teochew section of Chinatown, opposite the “Thong Chee Hee Choi” hawker centre. That hawker centre is now replaced by “The Central”. My memories of that stall was they were selling ‘wild boar meat’in gelatin then. The hawker must have been the father or father-in-law of the current couple running the stall today. I think when the supply of wild boar diminished, he switched to shark meat and now replaced it with pigs’ trotters. Even Geraldine from HK said it was great. Please reconsider before you leave for Perth.

Hi Dan, thanks for your lunch report, glad you enjoyed it today, especially the ‘post-lunch’. If you want to arrange another Jln Berseh lunch, can do it on or before Wed lunch? Must get my fix before I eat Turkish.

    I shall watch this space.

  73. Hi again,

For those who are curious, the stall has a ‘6 chopstick’ rating by Makansutra. This is the summa cum laude equivalent, ie cannot get any more chopsticks. Also like Lina says, she only knows 2 stalls in Singapore that has this dish, todays’ and another in Bkt Batok.

  74. Hi Charles Chua,

Thanks v. much for organising the Indian Veg lunch. and the v. good company. The only snag that we were seated apart esp. Hou Chong’s table . Now I know what Jln. Berseh have instead of just turtle soup.

  75. Charles/Dan

I am on for next Mon,Tue or Wed. at Jaian Berseh

We start with Gelatin Pork, Sharks Meat and Pigs Skin Combination, then wash them down with Turtle and Crocodile Soup. For desert, I saw a colourful Ice Kachang stall.

When the conversation runs, we can cross the road to admire one of our cultural heritage in Desker Road.

Kenneth, do come and point out the male virgins for us. I don’t think they will taste nice though.

We skip Indian vegetarian, we don’t want to look like camels, elephants or old horses.

  76. Well, having talk so much about the goodies at Jalan Berseh, let’s go for it as wat TS suggested. Tian Soo, Charles, Dan are coming next Wednesday, who else?

See you folks at !2.15pm for another round of good and forbidden foods. Variety is the spice of life, we will worry about the consequences after that!

    Dan

  77. Hi Dan and TSoo,

OK, so we meet at 12.15pm at the gelatin pork and shark meat stall. For those uneducated in this dish, that is on the first floor of Jalan Berseh Hawker Centre, in the middle, facing Desker and Rowell Rds.

Desker Rd is the iconic name for the location of Singapore’s oldest profession, need I say more. A lot of the houses there exhibit Peranakan style frontages with French windows. Ivan has told me that they are now all conservation buildings. This is the first step before they get UNESCO Heritage status. When that happens you may need a passport to get in.

Imagine yourself basking in the balmy weather and taking in the iconic sights while helping yourself to a dish prepared in the 60’s, by a vanishing tradesman. If you really want to relive the good ole times, wear a singlet, rolled up to your beer belly, with a indigo jacket over, reminiscent of the ole Chinese coolie, put your foot up your neighbours chair and learn to swear in dialect.

Kenneth, u coming? Steven? Hou Chong? Sam? Dolly? Terence? Debbie? Yatsing?

  78. #98 bro charles ah ,

u , hor belly 1 kind lei…dun know mei..i ve to work on wednesday some more ..if timming kam kam hor i.surely on 1 lah….so pai seh cant make it lah…thks for the invite hor…

u ,ppls enjoy yr makan ..i now lua nua liao lah…..hahahaha

    sam huat 3

  79. Hi guys!

At last you fellas ventured to Jalan Berseh… yes, I did say that I would get you all to join me but you beat me to it. So, it’s Wednesday 8th at 12.15, right?

And Tian Soo… you five males were the virgins!

  80. HI Sam,

I am still waiting to eat mousedeer or porcupine in JB. When are you going to bring me? Can you be the EO or not?

    Hi Kenneth,

So we can expect you on Wed? It’s a date then.

  81. Wow wow wow….sip.sip…sip…

OH LORD! Do not lead me into temptations (with all these talk on gelatin pork, shark/whale meat, pigs skin, turtle & Crocodile Soup, mutton soup, black chicken soup, black and white fish soups ……………………..and virgins):

FOR I WILL FIND THEM ME SELF!!! Keekekeekkeee…….

So, C-Chua/TS/etc, please chop-chop one seat for me too!

  82. Hi Charles at message #98,

Never know near my place has so many good food. Will join you all unless some urgent matter crop up.

Is this the main dish or want to try ??????- the stall that made the headlines in Singapore and Hongkong in July 2006, when it refused to open beyond its usual operating hours to serve Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. It made the news again in January 2007, when ex-Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, 4 months after his ousting in a military coup, made his way here for lunch in a visit to Singapore.

  83. Hi Steven Ng,

We can try the gelatin pork, shark, stirfried croc meat and even turtle if you want. The ‘orluak’is also good. That should be enough.

I don’t really fancy the Rangoon Rd (or is it Owen Rd) bak kut teh. I find the pork too hard for my false teeth, soup also I prefer the herbal, Klang style, not theirs. So if it is alright, I would give it a miss. Try the shop in Balestier Rd, also Teochew, clear peppery style. A favorite with the Channel 8 celebs.

Let me finish my dinner first.

  84. Hi Lina and Ah Nee,

Welcome, welcome. How about you too, Lina? Can take a break from your trading? How’s the experience so far? Exciting? Profitable? Any highs or lows? We may have a surprise guest too. Let’s see. Let’s just meet tomorrow at 12.15pm

    Look forward to it.

    Cheers till then,
