  1. Hi Dan,
Just some comments if you do not mind. I think my sms may have been too brief.
    1) We are travelling to Kluang, in Johore state, not Klang in Selangor state.
    2) Cost of tickets are S$26/ for a “Premier” ticket or S$16/ for a “Superior” ticket. Trip is two and a half hours to Kluang. Return tickets costs M$26/ for a “Premier” ticket and M$16/ for a “Superior” ticket.
    3) We can be democratic and decide which class tickets we will travel in. Majority decides both ways. We have to buy the Sgp-Kluang leg in advance. Tickets are sold only 24 hrs before. So we have to collect the money before we leave.
    4) This is a simple trip. Pay in advance, meet in Keppel train station at 7.30am, bring a book to occupy yourself for the 2 and a half hour journey, arrive in Kluang, buy tickets back to Sgp, walk around the vicinity of the train station, have lunch, board train and be back in Sgp on same day.

Trip for train enthusiasts, foodies, people who like to reminisce about ‘old’ times, people who are ‘chia pah, kah eng’ type.

Hope that is useful and thanks to Geok Suan for initiating the idea and Dan for putting up the post.

  2. actually charles, Kluang is not very far and better to drive up. i am thinking even if you are there by train, you still need to goaround the town and shops etc…

i will be in KL otherwise i will join u guys..

the zheng xing organic farm is there, also along the way from highway to farm or organic farm there is also a “leech” farm. very interesting.

with the car, you can see more, eat more and buy more.
train is nice, you might as well pool the money to pump petrol.
    just a suggestion.

  3. I just surf the web and it seem there is another option – Tebrau Shuttle Train (62,63,64,65) Singapore – Kluang – Singapore.

According to the information available at — travelmalaysiaguide.com/ktm-train-timetable-and-fare/#12 the train leave from Singapore at 0815 hrs and reach Kluang at 1053 hrs. The fare for Economy (AEC) is $7. Unfortunately the train return at 1125 hrs or 2100 hrs. Maybe we can leave using Tebrau Shuttle Train 62 but return using “Premier” or “Superior” train if the Shuttle Train schedule is too late for some of us.

  4. Hi Feztus @ #3,

I agree with you. Like you I prefer to drive but I think some/most want to go up by train. I have no major objections either way. Perhaps there might be another trip by car since we have many cars available, Sam, Dan, you, Tian Soo and many others.

Tian Soo will probably be interested in the ‘leech’ farm. I am game so long as they don’t serve it for lunch or tea.

    Hi Steven @ #4,

Thanks for the additional info. But I do not know why the attendant did not inform me of this possibility. Does the shuttle train still operate? Is Geok Suan able to shed some light on this? Also the timing might be a bit late for the ladies, coming back.

  5. Hello all,

Wah, you are really all out to visit Kluang.

I can’t help you with info on the Terbrau Shuttle cos I have never used it before.

By the time you get to Kluang, the station kopi tiam maybe closed for their noon siesta 1100 – 1pm. Ask/Find your way to their Rail Cafe in town (belongs to Station cafe). Plenty to eat there.

In addition to Feztu’s info, there is the biggest Dragon Fruit Farm in Malaysia on the outskirt of Kluang.

Please do some research on the net and you’ll probably be better prepared for the short noticed trip.

Sorry can’t accompany you there, but nonetheless, have fun.

    Geok Suan.

  6. Hi guys

I believe the trip is too rush for those interested to prepare themselves n purchase the tickets. But if u do have decided to embark on this journey, I would seek your help to obtain some information on “can-do” accomodation nearest to town for me for my future trip there on bicycles.

    Thanks.

  7. Hi Dan and Charles

I will abandon my house work and join you guys on Monday.

Can we go 1st class? I have not been on anything 1st Class since retirement. I would like to boast to myself and anyone who care to listen that I am going 1st Class you know….sounds good.
Got Train-hostess or not? Like the advert jingle ‘Malaysian girl..a great way to ride.’

  8. Dear SHCians who are going on this train ride,
Please note that your passport MAY NOT be stamped at the “immigration counter” oat the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station……..reason being that you are still on Singapore soil….not sure also if your “white-card” will be stamped too…..
And at Klang where you will drop off etc, there is NO IMMGRATION COUNTER – because the rationale is that (at Klang) the train already way into Malaysia soil….so there is no need to have “Immigration counter” to chop chop any silly foreigners passports…..
So please MAKE SURE you keep your SIN-KLANG Out-Bound Train Tickets with you and DO NOT THROW IT AWAY. Because on your return ride back to SIN, you will need this as “proof” of your entry and therefore is your “VISA” for your exit out of Malaysia…..IF not MANY MANY Headaches lah!!! You know what I meant, right???
    Be warned and be aware!!!
Have a good makan trip……wish that I can join you people for this Monday Train Ride-Makan Events…..fingers crossed, might just appear at the train station last minute…hahahahahha
    Cheers,
    IL

  9. Thanks Ron Koh for pointing out the date, it should read as November 22, 2010. I am getting worried, is this a sign of dementia?

So we have Charles, Dan, Joy, and Tian Soo coming. Steven Ng, are you on?

Feztus, certainly nice to drive but we are not certain of the ways about town and getting there. Just two years back, we made two trips in three cars to Ipoh and coming back we stayed in Cameron Highlands, KL and Malacca. Back then our navigators were Lawrence Khan and Boon Liang.

Tian Soo, I also want to go 1st class to and fro as I never had the chance nor able to afford.

    YK, noted your request.

Though we are running for time, dun worry as Charles will be in charge of booking the tickets and Joy Ah Long will standby!

    Dan

  10. Hoi TS #9,
1st class will cost twice the price of economy/others.
You get “leather” seat and a bit more leg room…but the hostess are the same….kekekeke. You know what lah!!
And the “tray-trolley-mobile” canteen sama sama same same as the other classes…you wont want anything from there..
If you are adventureous…..you should try the UPPER CLASS aka on top of the Train Cabin……good view all round, plenty of leg room to stratch out flat, windy, no second-hand cig-smoke from the next seater…..but the butt will be a bit sore…….metal-seat-what!!
You also get to sweat-it-out-a-bit without doing any excerise…..good for health or after that at makan session can have reason to put back what was lost on the UPPER CLASS…heheehehe

  11. Hi Dan,

Is it now confirmed on Mon, Nov 22? I thot it was Wed and had told some SHC members. Anyway if the majority is fixed for Mon, we can easily change it here.

Terence, are you coming? Anyway this trip is easy to replicate after our trip report.

Yew Kwong, wildo. Will check hotels there but I really have my doubts about riding there as I can see that traffic on the Federal highways will be bad with all the lorries, single lanes, blind curves (for cars, not cyclists) etc. I do hope you and your friends will be careful if ever you do ride there.

    Hi Ron Koh @ #8,
Are you coming? Short trip, good for you to move around, good company, great girls pampering you with 1st class service, etc. What are you waiting for?

    Hi Steven Ng @ #12,
You can be EO for the next trip. Add a feather to your cap. Easy to arrange, etc.,etc.,..

    Hi Tian Soo,

Seem to remember that KTM had a rule where they cannot retrench their staff due to strong union ties there. So we can expect some existing KTM staff waitresses serving us especially as we are booked on ‘Superior Kelas’ (FYI Superior is higher, faster, and betterer than 1st Kelas). Not sure if they will fit your specifications tho’. Be surprised!

  12. Hi Ivan

Didn’t know you are a kekekekee person(#12)! Nice.

Your info #10 is informative. Like the logic in paragraphs 1 n 2.

Who knows, I may show up at the station. KEKEKEKEE.

  13. Hi Charles, Dan,
Sorry, love to, but not able to join you and group. Sounds fun, the idea of travelling together and travelling first class, and eating all day.

    Terence Seah

  14. Dear folks,

Charles and I decided to change the date to November 24 on a Wednesday to give yoou more time to decide.

Irene,Tian Soo, hope this date is okay with you?

Ah Nee, Sockie, Terence, Ivan, Steven Ng, Geraldine, Ron, Fextus, Lily, wanna come?

    Dan

  15. yo charles and gang..since it is wednesday, i will be on my way back from KL, so i will turn into Kluang and see what good food you guys got to eat for lunch…or high tea..
will sms you charles if i really manage to get into Kluang on time.

  16. Hi Dan and Joy and Charles,

Thanks for organising. I’m interested – sounds v interesting. However, I can’t make it on Wed, 24 Nov. Pl include me if the outing is changed to another date or you have another in the pipeline.

    Cheers,
    Gabriella

  17. Ivan, thanks for the warning, we will definitely ensure that our paperwork are in order. Wat other benefits do we enjoy when travelling first class?

Geok Suan, do you encounter any passport issue?

Feztus, nice if you could join us and guide us around.

Lai Fong, hope that you can join us.

Gabriella, will keep you inform if another trip is plan.

    Dan

  18. Just happened to be around the vicinity of Tg Pagar and I take a leisure way to the Railway Station. It was already lunch hours – 12.59 hrs and the information counter was already closed. Fortunately the counter girl was still there packing her barang barang before proceeding for her lunch. I managed to convince her that I only have a simple enquiry.

Get confirmation that there is a shuttle train running daily from Singapore to Kuala Lipis. After getting the train schedule I requested for the fare table but she ask me to come back after 2 pm.

No choice and I look around and see there is no ‘Q’ at the ticket counter and proceed to mill around the counter and managed to talk to the ticket officer after he finish servicing the previous customer. At that point of time I hear a loud “Excuse me” and I look back and saw a few angry aunties staring at me. Now I see that there is a ‘Q’ but not a proper ‘Q’. Quickly I rush off or else those aunties will bombard with all the !@#$%^/?.

Here is the schedule for the shuttle train:

    SH 92 – Singapore (0715) –> JB Sentral (0811) –>Danga City Mall (0821) –> Kempas Baru (0836) –> Kulai (0902) –> Layang Layang (0929) –>Renggam (0940) –> Mengkibol (0953) –> Kluang (1002) –> Chamek (1015) –> ……

    SH 91 – Kluang (1523) –> …….. —> JB Sentral (1715) –> Singapore (1834)

By the way there is a group travel concession (min 10 person) of 25% on base fare.

  19. Hi YK

How about another warm up cycling trip to Kota Tinggi since Eileen is “now free and ready to… cheong”

    Hi Dan Kor

Is it possible for you to organise another trip to Kluang by train on a weekend for those unable to go on weekdays – tks

  20. Dan

    Wednesday is good for me.

Now we have 1st Class Train, Superior Class Train, Shuttle Train and 2 wheel bicycles. Which one?

Please choose the most comfortable one except cycling. For YK and Douglas it can be a warm up trip. For me it maybe my final journey.

  21. Dan #23,
Actually, this happen to me when I took the KTM train ride from SIN-KL and then KL-SIN back by Coach in Sept (just two months back).
    GT #16,
No lah! The logic only occur to me after it happened to me in Sept…..so it’s actually quite unsettling. Bcos when I reach KL – KTM Station, I was looking for the “Immigration Counter” to stamp my passport…..but no such counter existed at the station!! And the whole trip (while in KL), I was wondering what “trouble” will pop-up on my Exit-Leg out of Malaysia….
LUCKY, got the Train Ticket SIN-KL to show proof….so at JB immigration counter, had TWO CHOPS (ENTRY & EXIT) together….how nice he didn’t ask me for $$$

Lastly, what happen if both of us turned up at the train station and found that we got the date mixed up or wrong? Bcos the date appears to be on the “move” too; from Monday –> Wednesday –> 2011 –> 2010 –> ?? kekekeekkee

Have a great weekend — everyone!!

  22. Hi Dan,

    Re immigration.

I have not encountered any immigration problem before.

1.Ensure White card written out carefully.

2.Malaysian Immigration at Tanjong Pagar keys in your data, stamps your White card with date of departure and returns your ppt together with the White card.

When you receive ppt back from the imm officer, please remember to check that it has been stamped with the date of
travel on it. Keep this White card safely. They will collect it on your way Home. Big Trouble if you lose it.

Immigration officer will pick up the white card on your
return journey at JB. (You just sit tight in the train when it arrives at JB enroute to Singapore.) Ensure that you check your passport for the date of departure written on it when you receive back your ppt from the officer.

At 8am this morning I leave for KL by train to visit my sister. Home tomorrow by bus – trains on Sat & Sun booked out. Hope that it will be easier to purchase your return tickets on a week day.

    Enjoy yourselves.

    Geok Suan.

  23. Hi Dan

Let me check over the weekend and let you know if I will fly back to join your everchanging lunch trip. Kakakaa.

Have never been to this place, don’t know what to do during the kinda long train ride; good idea to read as suggested.

Would certainly want first class especially if it may be TS’ last journey. CHOY!!

  24. Hey Ivan

Looks like the date is firm now. In the event of lost in translation, we’ll set up shop and have your famous GnT. Cool?

  25. Hi Geraldine

Kluang is a small town with a sizable Chinese population. It used to be where the huge logs from the Malayan jungle end up being sawed. Later it started manufacturing plywood. There were many rich Timber merchants there in the 60’s through to the 80’s. Maybe their rich sons and daughters are still there.

You don’t have to worry about the journey. We will just gossip about scandals and characters in SHC. If there are no saucy tales, then we will invent some.

  26. Hi Danz,

Since I am on leave, I can join you folks on this Train ride. What time will we be arriving Singapore? I have Yoga at 7.00 pm and Dance Club Comm meeting at 8.00 pm. How much do I need to transfer $$$ to Joy Ah Long? Cheers!

    Ah Nee

  27. Soo Kee Douglas,
Let’s us do this recceing and see if we want to do it again on a weekend. Those who are keen for a weedend trip may indicate here.

Geraldine, sure you would ‘fly over the moon’ and land here to join us?

Thanks Ivan and Geok Suan for sharing your experiences with us.

Irene, Sockie and Lily, perhap another time.

AH Nee, we hope to depart Kluang at 2.00pm and therefore there should be ample time for you.

Thanks Steven Ng for the additional info on the train schedules. Seems like most may want to travel first class!

    Dan

  28. Veri Veri Sori Muc Muc EOs….(n GT n all going),
    Cant join u ppl 4 tis train-ride-cum-makan trip….
I can abandon my work but cant abandon my customers coming 2 SIN next week…..sigh..sigh..sigh…
Anyway, u ppl enjoy yourselves, enjoy the food, enjoy the rustic scenaries…..sop-sop-sop…
    IL

  29. Hi Dan

Confirmed joining you guys. Will settle payment at the station if you don’t mind.

Have to start packing now. Really last minute trip.

See you all on Nov 24.

  30. wow wow wow dan ah ,

    sam huat huat huat

  31. Hi Dolly

Lucky you come, I was just thinking that I don’t know enough SHC gossip materials to keep Geraldine happy for 6 hours. I was going to talk about you and Ah Huat and Ah Huat and you only.
Now you come, so we cannot talk about you and also cannot talk bad things about Ah Huat. I hope you can bring out all the juicy stories from the time you were SHC Manager. We will only talk about people who are not there of course.
    Anymore want to come?

  32. Hi, Charles #14:

Sorry, but I have to give this a miss. Although it is very tempting, I don’t want to spoil the fun saddling you guys with a gimpy and effectively one-handed old coot. :o)

The thought of missing out on the activities will only spur me on to work harder towards an eventual recovery, and sooner instead of later.

    Have a great time, guys.

  33. Yes, yes Ronald Koh.

Keep up the hard work and spirit. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you up and about, joining us in our fun activities.

    All the best. :)

  34. Joy #50

I think you are shy that is why you wrote ‘she is going’. Marg Tian is joining us on the trip, so you should say ‘she is coming’. It would not sound so bad. Just don’t say ‘she is coming with Joy’, than it may sound dirty.

  35. Hi Ron K @ #49,

Nobody calls my friend an ‘old coot’, including yourself.

No worries Ron, there’s always another trip. The world is our oyster.

    Take care for now,

To All coming, I have to buy the tickets 24 hrs before so I am going to the station on Tues afternoon. The booking office opens at 8.30am and we have to leave by the 8am trip.
So I will pay first for the 9 names above. We will try the ‘honour’ system and I hope there will be no disagreements to spoil our trip.

All travellers must be at the station at 7.20am. There is a large canteen that sells drinks and food. Bring your passport and some M$. Fill in your white card but keep teh white card for your travel back to Sgp, failing which you will have no evidence of entering M’sia and be subject to the usual fines and imprisonment.

On arrival in Kluang, we will buy our return trip ticket back (1st Class at the princely sum of M$26 and can expect to be back to Sgp by 5 or 6pm). Thereafter free and easy for a few hours.

All those who are not going can sms me details of who they want gossipped, pass me the juicy details and I shall spread them like the wind in M’sia. I already know who is a stud, who claims to be a stud, but alas…, etc., etc.

If it gets interesting, we may continue overnight, who knows…, Dolly knows. We will then be back the next day.

  36. Kekekekeee TS. Love your comments about gossiping and all the comings and goings!

Now I know for sure I will not be thumb-sucking, bored to death and staring at dirty old men on the train without a good book.

A pity Sockie, Lily and Gabriella can’t make it. Better not use the phrase ‘can’t come’. Kakakakaa.

  37. Hi Geraldine #55

I would love to join in. Sounds so interesting .. what more with all the juicy tales on board the train.. really irresistible (yum, yum! licking my lips). Sob, sob.. cannot go.

I really hope to see you again at some other functions. Btw, there’s the Christmas Party on 18 Dec.

Btw, I’ve sent you some nice emails. Not sure if you’ve received them?

Cheers and catch up with you soon,
    Gabriella

  38. Thanks Charles for buying the tickets for us.

Lai Fong, Ah Nee are you coming?

This was initially thot to be a trip by three old men who loves turtle soup. Now we have 6 fair ladies joining in. It’s going be a lot of fun with Tian Soo, Dolly, Geraldine and ‘a pinch of salt’ in our midst, we will be electrified by these livewires on the journey.

Gabriella, Lokz, Ron, Ivan, Sam, you will miss the fun and gossips!

Tian Soo, wat this coming and going, I dun understand?

    Dan

  39. Hi Charles & Dan,

I may be participating in the above event. Let me see whether I can ‘rebalance’ my schedule for tomorrow. Will let you know by tomorrow morning. If more than 10, we can have a 25% group discount.

By the way, Dan you are so innocent. If you are still a single, it’s acceptable but not for married person. Maybe you can ask Joy. :)

  40. Dan#57/Steven#59,
As I recalled, nearlysome 30years ago when having IT….
    with AngMoh charbo……they yelled I’m CooMMIINNGGGG…
    with JapIn charbo……..they screamed I’m GooIINNNGGGG…
So, it is now a racial issue???
p/s: dun know abt InDI or Afri…..
Better not say anymore……wait kena hantam left-right-centre-top-bottom-side-ways-all-ways……..
    Cheers!
    IL

  41. Hi Anna and Ann,

Nice that you can join us. As for the payment, Charles has kindly agrees to pay for us first.

    Steven, Ivan,
I thot it oredi decided where we are going?
Ivan, the gossips starts here, you certainly given us a glimpse of the colourful life you have been enjoying!

    Dan

  42. Hi All

To attract even more participants. I will buy the best lunch in town for any virgin who come on this trip.

But you folks have to come up with a decent way to verify the claim.

That will keep you all busy in the train????

  43. Hi Dan,

Who is Steven Lim? Is he also Steven Ng?
Yew Kwong smsd me to say he will be coming. So including Steven Lim, and excluding Steven Ng, we have 15 people coming.

YK, You can ask if KTM can transport your bicycles by train and for how much.

I shall buy the tickets tomorrow. We shall travel to Kluang on “Superior Class”, which costs S$16 before any group discount and travel back to Sgp in style, ie “First Class”. Hope no disagreements there.

  44. Hi Tian Soo @ #66,

You have a soft spot for virgins eh? Why not start a “Virgins Anonymous”? Can imagine many volunteers for your new society.

Shall I get a cabin on Wed to kick off inaugural event?

  45. Hi Dan/Charles,
Pls include Robert Tan for this trip also.

Charles, I sent u a sms regarding Robert’s participation earlier, pls take note.

    Cheers.. Dolly

  46. CharlesC

Asked earlier. Their answer “only foldies” are allowed onboard. In other words it also means full bikes must be dismantled and packed to be sent in as luggage.

  47. Here are some background info about Kluang:

    http://www.kluangonline.com
    wikitravel.org/en/Kluang
    http://www.kluangonline.com/map.htm

By the way Charles, since we have about 15 to 16 person participating, we only need 10 to get 25% group discount. For the balance who are above 60 years, you can consider to persuade the ticket officer for a 50 percent discount. So those who are above 60 and above plse put up your hand. :)

  48. Hi Gabriella

I can meet up with you this trip if you wish. By the way, I have not received your emails recently so I think it’s still the format thingy.

    Hope to catch up soon.

  49. Yay! Lai Fong and Cyclist King YK are on board (YK, hope we get to see some beautiful bodies, kekekekeee)…….will also be good to see Ah Nee again.

Looking forward to meeting fellow trippers I have not met, also the Yunnan man, Feztus – if he can detour, whatever.

  50. Charles,

My mistake, should be Steven Ng.

Welcome on board, Yew Kwong and Robert Tan.

We have now 16 confirmed to travel.

Tian Soo, wat else you have up your sleeve? The girls are curious and wary!

    Dan

  51. Hi…Dan and all – what a co-incidence. I will be at Kluang on 24th Nov, with some old friends. We take a bus at Kranji to Lakin and then hop on to an express bus to Kluang. Total time around 2.5 hours too. Should be there around lunch time (noon). Our MUST VISIT place is Pacific Hypermarket, I think quite near the railway station. They have everything under one roof (incl a “fitness centre”) and things are cheap because they want you to come again and again. Hope to see u there !!!

Hope to see u guys there.

  52. Hi Geraldine,

Going to be a lot of fun, wat insinuation?

Daniel Chan, thanks for the tip on Pacific Hypermarket, we look forward to meet you and Feztus too!

    Dan

  53. Charles has bought 16 tickets for us, no group discount as it is the school holiday!
Thanks Charles, all to meet at 7.30am tomorrow. Dun forget your passport.
    Dan

  54. An important reminder

    DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT.

And I don’t mean that plastic card. Take with you an UMBRELLA ! The last thing you want happening is to get stranded somewhere when it rains and you have a train to catch. ENJOY !!!

  55. Hi everybody,

Just a note to thank all for being such good sports today, despite the hiccups and unexpected delays. We arrive back in KTM station at 10.30 pm.

Also to Dan and Dolly who helped immensely by settling all payments and also in organising the group.

    Here’s my trip report,

Kopi at the station, very good. Lunch at Yong Tau Foo place at corner of Jln Haji Manan, just about passable.

We decided to take the 6.30pm train back to allow us more time in Kluang and after lunch, proceeded in 2 groups to some shopping and another to have some ‘spiritual sustenance’.

After the shopping it was raining like good old Daniel Chan warned, (btw, how did you do that? psychic?), so we proceeded to have an early dinner. Quite good but with small portions of usual Cantonese fare, char siew, siew yoke, duck etc.

After dinner, rain thinned down considerably and we were able to walk back to the station.

One warning tho’, the train schedules are notoriously unreliable, and due to a delay going North, and another delay on the way back, the trip took 3 to 4 hours, ie late by more than an hour each way.

But with good company and delicious contribution from TS and Co, I dare say we had a wonderful journey.

  56. Hi Charles, Dan & Joy,

Thank you for organising the event.

I make the right decision to exit from the Woodland Station checkpoint although I am staying nearer to Tg Pagar station and reach home at 10.35 pm. I was worry about the delay along the railway track in Singapore.

I never went shopping and was searching for a internet cafe. Can’t find one in Kluang Mall but finally able to locate one somewhere near one of the shops houses as I need to activate a tool in my website which I forgot to do it while rushing to Tg Pagar station in the morning. There were quite a few youngsters playing lan game at the cafe. It cost M$2 per hour to use their computer.

While there I also kaypoh and access silverhairclub forum as Serene is having problem accessing it. To register for the forum click on “Register” and NOT “Membership application”. Maybe Big Boss can incorporate the forum and membership registration together so that it would not confuse new members.

Although Kluang is a city I find that it is look more like a small town but it does bring us down to our memory lane maybe in the 70’s and 80’s.

Once again thank you to the event organisers and not forgetting my fellows participants for such a memorable journey. Oh by the way this is the first time to meet the ever popular Geraldine. :)
