A Visit to St Joseph Home – Volunteers needed

I hope that some of pioneer members remembered that back in Y2009 on May 1, SHC did organized an charity activity at St Joseph Home.  This year, we hope to organize another entertaining event for these folks staying there to give smiles on their faces.

As Nelly is currently out on a mission trip and will not be back in 2weeks’ time, I am putting up this post on her behalf.

Date of Visit: 8th May 2011 (Sunday). Time: 9.45am to 12.30pm.

Location: St. Joseph’s Home. 921, Jurong Rd, S’pore 649694. Tel: 62680482. Fax: 62684787.  From Boon Lay Interchange, take Bus 157 and alight 4 bus-stops away at back gate. Those going by car are requested to car-pool due to shortage of parking space; about 8 lots only.

Website: www.stjh.org.sg

It is always a blessing in helping the less fortunate in society.

At this moment, there is nothing more than getting the SHCians to entertain these Residents of St Joseph’s Home with our karaoke singing and/or any kind of performances are also welcome to share with the joy with these Senior on that day.

Like-minded SHCians can come forward to volunteer their time as they had already got a sponsor for the good although thru’ self-collection.  Not sure if extra transport will be needed.

Chit chat with these seniors, helping in serving the food, feeding them for those less mobile and entertaining them with songs and others…

  1. Hi Dolly,
I would like to join in to entertain the seniors. Have always wanted to dance with the wheelchair-bound – wonder if there is sufficient space to do that at the Home. How about performing an easy and interactive linedance or two for them? Cya.

  2. Hi All,
A big thank you for those who had signed up as volunteer. :)

YatSing, I m sure dat the Home will enjoy a dance item performed by SHCians. However I m not 2 sure abt dancing wif the wheelchair-bound as what I can remembered these are really not mobile at all but nevertheless, it is no harm 2 try lor.. Will discuss with Nelly on this upon her return.

    Cheers.. Dolly

  6. Hi Dolly,

You have always charity at heart. Both you and Sam are sincere supporters of charity, and always helping people in need. I am glad to see you and other SilverHairs joining this charity event.

I wont be able to join you> Wish you, Nelly and fellow SHCians a good day at the event.

    Terence Seah

  7. Hi Dolly,

I see that you already have all the address and buses to the SJHome including telling SHCians that there is a backdoor into the Home when they alight at the designated bus-stop.
Glad that you kept the 2009 info for future use.

Nelly and I had never doubted the generosity of the SHCians when it comes to charitable work.We were very confident that Dolly would happily play a part too when called upon. Thanks Dolly.

If you ask, then… any help is good help.

Please continue to liaise with Dolly while Nelly is still
    away on a mission trip.

    Thank you and cheerio.

  16. Hi Gab, Charles, Ros Jie, I m right now at Cambodia n I will discuss further with person-in-charge 1st b4 we decided how to proceed with this.. ok? Cheers.. Dolly

  17. Steven, I could give you a ride come down to Blk 323 ave 5(opp police station) at 9.15 am. Stand beside POSB ATM. My car No SGU5087Z Champagne.

  18. Daily at about 9.15 in the morning, an unmarked car bearing regn no. 5087 will exit from the Polis Stn. So makes sure you get into the right car. One will take you to do charity; the other will take you to jiak curry.

Seriously, by giving out details of one’s car so openly, there’s a real risk that kidnappers might abduct yr car and then ask you to pay a ransom.

Car abduction/kidnapping is theft. No death for theft. So with the penalty a trip on that unmarked 5087, many may be tempted to become thieves targetting yr car.

Now, be scared. Be very scared.

    Hehee………..

Sorry, I have to withdraw from this event.

I just realize I have a night flight to take on 8th May. Better be good at home during the day or else next time cannot go travelling.

  20. Ho Josie/Tian Soo,
Noted both withdrawal.. Well there are always next time lor..

SHC volunteers, tonite, both Sam and me met up with Nelly 2 discuss on the progress of this event and kindly note the following:

We can be there from 10am onwards for interaction and from 10.30am to 11am, singing performance by SHC – Jeff, perhaps, you can tell me how do you intend to work on this.

11am – serving lunch for the residents, pls help to volunteer in this aspect as some of the residents need to be spoon feed so they need more volunteers to help out on this.

Nelly had confirmed that there will be some food catered for volunteers but she is afraid that the amount given by the sponser might not be enough to cater for all volunteer. Hence, I had assured Nelly not 2 worry too much on this and we will find our own lunch after the event, hope this is acceptable to all of you.

As for those who asked on donations, Nelly had expressed dat they had managed 2 get sponsors for this event and if some of you still 1 2 donate, u may do so, pass the donation to the Sister-in-charge as they will buy milo, milk and other grocery items for these old folks.

    Cheers… Dolly

  21. Hi Dolly,

I won’t be able to help much in this event. I can give some members a lift to the Home on Sunday. If anyone needs a lift, please meet at Serangoon Central MRT, at the exit opposite NEX and in front of the NKF Dialysis Centre.

I can give you something to pass to the Home.

Cheers and hope you have an enjoyable day.

Tian Soo, As the official supplier, I think the Home residents won’t mind any SYTs (any nationalities will do) pandering and fussing over them on that day. Can pass your contacts to Dolly to do the needful? Much obliged.

  22. Hi Steven,

Since we have to be at the Home at 9.45am, can we meet opposite NEX at 8.45am.

If we are early we can help carry some chairs around or something like that

  23. Hi Steven @ #42,

Since you are staying in Clementi and you are going to work so hard that morning, let me re-arrange the pickup point for you. Don’t tire yourself with all the tooing and froing, you need to keep the ladies entrtained.
Will call you or vice versa to make arrangements.
    Cheers

  24. Hi Steven @ #47. Sure do. Wah, still awake? Wat doing you?

    Hi Janie @ #48,
Sure do. Wah, still awake? Wat doing you?
Can I get a ride on you Defender some day? Have you gone to Johore for your off-roading?. Was jeep comdr in NS days. Did exercises in the 106 RG before. Now I think they have been replaced, good thing too, as they were death traps in this terrain CU at Serangoon MRT, exit C, opp NEX at 8.45am on that Sunday.

  25. Hi Charles @#49.

Thanks…attended colleague’s wedding dinner and slept after posting my request. U dun seem to sleep early too (actually guess u are sleeping in the early morning).
U are welcome to ride on my rugged rig. Will tell u more of my off-roading experience on that Sunday opp NEX.

    Hi Dolly and all,

KUDOS to you all. Indeed the old folks enjoyed themselves very much. I so happy for them. Without you fellas it won’t be a happy occasson for them.

Many thanks. Pls Dolly forward to them on my behalf.

    We’ll meet up again.

    Nelly “Unquote.

Without all of you volunteering in this event, it would be so successful… Many thanks… Dolly

  30. Of all the recent activities that SHC has organised for its members, the visit to St Joseph Home gets my vote. Although I was not there, am touched by what I see from the photos. The visit must have been very meaningful, being able to bring some entertainment, laughter and joy to the residents. It shows SHC is more than having fun, the members do share their time, resources and compassion with the less privileged. Kudos to the organisers and members who visited.

  31. Hi Lydia,
Well said indeed and very thank you for this. Not 2 worry abt not unable to participate this year. There will always be another year as from what I understood from Nelly, they always organise this activity to SJ Home every year on May day. Maybe, by next year, you will try your hand 2b EO for this, OK? Cheers.. Dolly
