Although I have started this post, asking you to share your wishes for 2012, I like to start first. Hope you will follow after.
My wish for 2012 is to see participation from members we have been silent or watching on the sidelines. I hope we can we can set the tone and environment for more SilverHairs to meet other SilverHairs, and that those who have made friends through the club help in making this possible. Help someone make a friend.

My wish for the New Year – My family and friends to be in the pink of health, have a roof over their head, food on their tables, some spare cash to go on travel and buy the things they want, and most of all, true and good friends around them.
My wish is to find someone to hold my hands, give me a hug and a shoulder to cry on when I need it, to have a coffee with me and talk about anything and make me laugh :) Yes! I wish! I am straight if you know what I mean.
Cheers to the New Year everyone! Waiting for the fireworks display to come on and will be watching it in the comfort of my office :)

I am interested in how to get rid of termites, without getting a team of pest control guys into my hut. Do you know of any chemicals, something you can buy off the shelf? I dont see the termites, but I can see the wood particles.

The pest control guys blow Arsenic Powder into the holes where there are termites. It kills most termites instantly and those that do not die will bring the poison to their nest and exterminate all. But that can be dangerous in your home and it is also difficult to get a supply of arsenic powder on your own.
There are ant-traps you can buy from the supermarkets. They can also get rid of termites if you can place them where the termites walk. Unfortunately termites do not walk in the open. They move in dark, narrow and humid places. It is difficult to place the traps where they walk. You can break the traps and blow the poisonous substance into the hole but you may be the one terminated if you are not careful.
I find Kerosene very effective. They die almost instantly on contact but if you cannot reach the queen termite, you cannot get ride of them. Poison in powder form is more effective in that some termites would inadvertently carry the powder to the center of their nest. With liquid substance we have to physically locate and pour them onto the nest.
You can be more creative to get rid of termites by remembering that they will die if exposed long enough to sunlight or a lack of humidity.
I know it is fun watching them die after your books or house are eaten. But be aware that termites are living things. Each one you kill will affect negatively on your Kamar. Heaven gets farther away and your God may not forgive you. Fortunately I don’t have problem with this.

I should have consulted you earlier. My hut is full of termites, so this afternoon I went to a House supply shop and bought a powder containing Tetrametrin and Alphacypermetrin. I think it does the job of arsenic. Willk let you know uf it works. The shop guy knew I needed it badly and told me I can get a pest control guy for a few thousand baht. Anyway, he finally sold the powder to me for $4.
Not so sure if I will go upstairs, but I won’t mind seeing their legs facing the skies. Thank you for your suggestion on where to place the powder.

The powders are poisonous and not to be touch by hand. I hope you have got yourself a blower. It is a rubber ball attached to a nozzle. You squeeze the ball to pump the powder into the holes.

TS is right, the Arsenic Powder is very effective but not freely available. If you wish to consider yet another product, there is a “David Grays Ant and Termite Spray” sold in Bunnings Warehouse here in Perth. The active constituent are 100g/L Permethrin 25:75 Solvent: 792g/L Hydrocarbon Liquid -(whatever that is). This spray can be used to treat infestation of subterranean termites, timber borers eg auger beetle, powder post beetles, pinhole and furniture borers. It is also very effective in eradicating the complete nest of ants. Personally, I like this product. During Winter, I spray the grounds around the perimeter of my house so as to fence off would be migrants. During summer, I spot spray the ants’ nest. Touch wood, so far, no infestation of Termites in any wood structures and surface ants are under control.
Let me know if you need any assistance in getting a bottle.

About your termites problems and “Hopefully, your wish to get rid of them will come true.”
I remember many years ago, had discussed this subject with a close-friend working in Rentokil (a pest control company in SIN) and you know what is his honest answer about getting rid of termites once they had infested your house?
– Burn the whole thing down and re-build a new one!! That’s is the only 100% sure way, non-toxic to humans and is most “environmentally friendly method” – the last part depends on how you see it or perceive it burning down!

Actually one of the function of SHC is to get people together especially male and female. That by itself can relief itches…. all itches. Terence will be very happy to see more people here soothing each other.
For those of you rushing to help relief each others itches now, let me give you a word of caution. The soothing process is usually very gentle when you first find your ‘eldersoother’. After a period, the relationship becomes more caring and with deep concern, each one would not allow the mosquitoes to bite. They will smack the poor insect to smithereens before their partner gets stung.
The problem with this smacking is that sometimes they miss the mozzies but they never miss the partners’ skin. After some time the couple may be smacking each other even when there are no mozzies.
