Are you 100% retired? or have given up a full or part-time time job?

I believe we have many still-working SilverHairs in our membership.  By full-time, I mean working 9-5 or where the hours worked are long.I believe we have many still-working SilverHairs in our membership.  By full-time, I mean working 9-5 or where the hours worked are long.

By "Still-Working", or partially retired, I am referring to part-time work eg teaching, consultancy, online trading or when the hours worked are a few hours a week.  I also mean "paid work".

By retired, I mean "Not working" at all.  May be looking after grand children, playing mahjong daily,  going holidays, or catching up with friends regularly.

As a show of hands, can you raise your hands, so we know, you are retired, and what do you do in the course of the week? We may be able to learn from you how to go about our later part of our lives.

I hope that SilverHairsClub can also provide more opportunities for 100% retired members to gather together.

Look forward to know the real retirees.

  1. Hi Terence,
I need your help here. You see many eon years ago, I go to work for other people like any normal person.Somehow, I either don’t fit in or it doesn’t fit me.So I became self-employed and did my own thing for the past qter of a century. Now this thing that has help me pay for my living expenses in the past somehow is also ageing like me and is not money-making. However, the enterprise is still a “live” company on ACRA, and the pittance that I made from it has its use because with that I am eligible for work-fare bonus. Evertime when I feel that the orders are not coming in and I plan for a trip, they start to gush in. I think someone up there doesn’t like me. So, am I retired, semi-retired or 100% retired?
Having said that, I like to share with the folks out there the activities that have kept me sane all along.
    1) Reading is my passion.I don’t read fictions or paperback novels.
    2) Sewing and cooking are therapeutic too for me.
    3) Cleaning is something I do only on weekends and on days when I have unresolved issues on my mind.
    4) I jog every day for some 15mins and follow up with my daily dose of exercise regime.
    5) TV programmes are a must everday.
    6) I have pets and they mean the world to me.
    7) Taking naps and time off from everything and everyone for a couple of mins everday is highly recommended because it re-boots your whole system.
    8) Window-shopping is like R & D to me and I do it when I run out of things to do.Mind you, the results come in very handy and you can tap on them from your archive anytime.
    9) Not forgetting- visiting property show-room or inspecting re-sale properties. No money to buy, never mind. Can still have ideas on how to re-do or re-organise your house.
10)Go to judicial courts and enjoy court-room drama for free. Air-cond,cross-examination and sometimes got free side-show (they use props, exhibits when they re-enat the cases).
    11) Take MRT or bus rides to check out whether there are now more or less Singaporeans in the crowd. My latest discovery was just last week and our number is still OK.I would not want to wake up one day to find that I have to look hard to spot a Singaporean in Singapore.
    12) Writing on SHC forum. Already I spent some 30 mins on this topic.Nobody is going mind about your grammar or your views.Just “ham-tum”.
    13) Reviewing your weekly activities.

Take your pick,I am not charging.13 activities for 6 days a week(Sunday -you switch off),must be sufficient for a bountiful life.

  2. Wendy, I would like to think you are semi-retired. Good to hear from you that you have an active lifestyle. Let’s see who else are semi-retired or retired.

I think some are shy. You probably are not.

  3. Hi Wendy #1

So your company ‘is also ageing’ like you. lol! Really like your sense of humour. :) Also am curious about your ‘not money-making’ business. Can share here or write to my e-mail(kdaae2005@hotmail.com)? Thanks.

  4. Hi Terence

There is a v interesting article on the Retirement Villages in some well-developed countries in today’s ST.

    Good idea!

  5. Once,I queue up behind a Singaporean guy at the immigration checkpoint going into Hanoi. He is in his late 50s. His total luggage consist of a beat-up haversack and a couple of plastic bags which I think contain his daily food ration. He said he was on his way to China by public transport. He is retired and has a 2 room HDB flat in Singapore. He spends his retirement travelling from country to country on the cheap by himself.

That is what I would like do if I don’t have family commitments here.

  6. I miss working life. The last time I held a full-time job was in Year 2004. Ironically, it was the year I completed and obtained a Diploma in Health Science – Nutrition.

There were several factors as to why I didn’t look for another job.

    1) As I was from the same industry as my husband, he had to
sign a clause stipulating that I, his spouse, am not to be directly involved in his company or any other companies of the same industry (sounds confusing right?)
    2) For the above reason, I get free hospitalization insurance from his company and the most attractive perk of all is I, get to travel with my husband on business trips at company’s expense
    3) My son and daughter-in-law needs my help in minding my grandchildren. More so, from the time they were born and less so now that they’re 5 and 3 yrs old
    4) With the passing of years I developed chronic ‘achy-ness’ on my leg calfs that can render my sleepless at nights without a good rubdown. Most days I am fine but when the muscles start aching it can be really bad
    5) I have realised that at my current age, I have to compete
    with foreigners for jobs…:(

To summarize, I reckon I can be considered as fully retired then.

    Cheers
    Ros

  7. My grown-up kids told me that Mummy NEVER retires..this is a
reminder they teased me while on holiday & i was still making
cooked-breakfast for the family..so i am having an identity
crisis here!! HELP!! AS Mother from the day 1 when our baby
was born, we are privileged to hold the job til we disappear
from this earth…WE HOLD A JOB FOR LIFE !!3 CHEERS to all the
Mothers out there, esp. Working Mothers !!
My husband, Chin Soon is still working full-time.

  9. Hi, Terence and all:

I took the option of retiring from my regular job on medical grounds in 2006. I was planning on spending my retirement years on origami, which has been a life-long passion of mine.

Then I had another stroke in 2009, which ‘robbed’ me of the use of my left half of my body. I have since recovered substantially, but have not (yet) regained functional use of my left – and dominant – hand.

I still go for physiotherapy two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Other than that, my days are spent exercising on my own, on origami (yes, I still do origami, though the use of just my non-dominant hand restricts me to whatever is within physical limitations), corresponding with friends around the world via email and FB, daily walks around the estate, with a bucket of cat food for the strays, and being a couch potato.

I strongly believe that, with modern physio- and occupational therapy, eventual near-complete recovery is possible, and do what I can to encourage fellow patients to remain positive in working towards that eventuality.

When I am better recovered, I hope to serve as volunteer in the rehab centre I go to. Its just a way of paying back to society for what I benefitted from it.

  10. Hi Jasmine,
I just logged in now and saw your request.Sori for my belated response.I make a living collecting printing orders for items like business cards, office documents and anything printed on paper. In the early ’80s orders were decent. Then technology like the fax machine and the computer start to rob us in the printing industry of our business.Going paperless means the days are numbered for business in paper printing.

  11. Hi Wendy #10
Tks. I didn’t know there’s such a ‘business’ as collecting orders for printing jobs. I always go straight to the shop if i want to have things printed. How do you publicise your service?

Ya, you’re in a sunset industry. May be you could add value to your present service or expand your service, to revive your ‘aging’ business? lol! Don’t give up!

  12. Hi Wendy #1,

I see you have 13 activities which you enjoy day by day, except Sunday. I hope you will take some time to read up on some of the activities in previous months. After that, I would be keen to hear what you would like to do for SHC. I think you are very much an entrepreneur. Join the events, you will be surprised we are a great bunch of people.

  13. This Post is interesting. Many retirees have been quiet on the sidelines; and only join the working SHCians from time to timje. I dont know why.

However, this Post is intended to find out who are the retirees. We have the West group and the North group. Next time, we will have the North goup. Please see if your name appears in this list. This means you are a retiree.

I hope we can slowly develop something specially for retirees. So, make sure your name appears here.

    Terence Seah

  14. Hi Terence
would like to point out that i’m not eligible to be on the 100% retiree name list as i’m working part-time.

I think it’s good to have activities targeted at retirees or semi-retirees as these activities can be held during weekdays.

    cheers,

  15. Hi Jassmine #14,

I tend to agree with you. Semi-retirees have also their own time on their hands. OK, for now, I shall include both retirees and semi-retirees as one group.

One group will be for those working full-time; and
another group for those retired or semi-retired.

  16. Hi Terence,

I am new to SHC and I am a full time retiree. I am currently undergoing a training program to qualify as a
Volunteer Guide at the National Museum of Singapore.
When I have qualified, perhaps I can invite some of our members to be “guinea pigs” for my tours at the National
    Museum.

  17. Hi Jas#11 and Terence #12,
Apologies for my belated response.Me busy with something, something or slow- I don’t know.

Jas#11:Anyhow, thks Jas for your encouragement and as to the other stuff-quite epic, qter of a century odyssey,so I will tell you when we meet in person.

Terence #12:I have joined in a couple of SHC activities and I agree with you that the members are a wonderful bunch.
As to what I would like to do for SHC, I am still not sure.
Let’s play it by ear considering I am spontaneous by nature

  18. Wendy #1

    A very interesting thread indeed…just to side-track a bit!

I am just wondering which other SHCians are in a “sun-set” BRICKS & MORTAR industries, who are struggling to keep the biz/entity afloat … a show of hands please!!!!

Perhaps, we, all the One-Man-Operation (OMO) or One-Man-Show (OMS) BRICKS & MORTAR SHCian biz owners should gang together and support each other plus help each other to keep our biz afloat…..and make it flourish for yourselves too.

Every OMO/OMS BRICKS & MORTAR Biz has its own unique advantages and core strength – hence, the reason why it is still surviving (and kicking the butts of MNCs, GLCs etc) in spite the fact that the majority may view it as a “Sunset” Bricks & Mortar Industries ….. it may well be just a misconception!!!

If there are at least 10 numbers of these OMO/OMS BRICKS & MORTAR SHCian Biz Owners showing/rising their hands, I offer myself to lead this group into greener pastures….

This can become a support group within the “Bigger” Round-Table-Brother Event….

So, don’t be shy!!! Raise your hands and be counted if you are a OMO/OMS BRICKS & MORTAR SHCian Biz Owner!!

You should be DAMN PROUD of this! Because I am one too!

    Cheers!
    Ivan Lim

  19. Hi Ivan #19,

I like your initiative and I also would support it all the way. Knowing you all this while, I see you as a true entrepeneur, with drive and energy. I like the concept behind this idea and plan of yours.

Please go ahead and let us know your thoughts. I like your leading this group, especially for the OMOs and Brick and Mortar business. I hope even those who have retired or semi-retired can join too. Give it a name. I will join your group and participate too.

By the way, I am in Yangon until Monday. Gosh, aeroplanes landing and taking off every few minutes.

  20. Hi Wendy #18
I want to hear your epic odyssey. :) Can u give me your e-mail? Mine: kdaae2005@hotmail.com

    Hi Ivan #19
The passion behind your comment is unmistakable! Can i raise my hand if my OMO business is in the clouds?…lol! Ya, am still dreaming about it. :)

  21. Ivan @19, another good tangible idea, ‘jiayu’
Terence@20, noted your support, for a start a $100,000- seed funding wud be good, keep the ideas coming Terence ‘jiayu’

  22. Hi Henry #22,

Errr….why are we talking about or asking for seed money? Who need this funding? I dun see anyone pitching a solid worthwhile biz proposal or idea here at the forum or at any SHC biz-oriented gathering event.

What I am seeking for is: at least 10nos of OMO Bricks & Mortar SHCian Biz Owners, whose biz are already up and running for quite sometime already and most probably on self-sustaining normal profit mode. But are finding it a more and more uphill task of keeping it going due to aging, nobody to hand-over too but is still a viable running biz entity.

Anyway, I dun think any OMO will be going into expansion mode with a subdued economic outlook of at least the next 18 months. What I hope to do is to group these like-minded OMO Bricks & Mortar biz owners together, trade our internalbresources, exchanges of real-life experiences, share our customer base and use the individual existing network/strength to reach a wider spectrum of markets (be it across different industries within Singapore or across different countries into the region).

I have done this as a OMO, leeching into my overseas partners strength and would like to really give/share this edge and push it to these serious OMO Bricks & Mortar SHCian biz owners too. That’s all.

p/s: I am using the iPhone to freaking type this out. It’s making me crossed eyed with this freaking small little qwerty touch pad! There may be typo-errors & sentence errors that I freaking can’t see at all!

  23. tsk…tsk…tsk…

No OMO Bricks & Mortar Biz Owners in SHC at all?? ..sigh..sigh..sigh

If you are one and do not wished to “expose” yourselves at this forum, its OK! You can write to me privately at my yahoo email…..and we will take it from there if the targeted numbers raised their hands.

Req: Looking for OMO Bricks & Mortar Biz which is already up and running for some years already…..

Note: To be realistic/pragmatic, there are no miracles or magic in my intended sharing/giving …. results will only shows down the road like one/two years …. tops 3 years. There are no quickies or short-cuts to sustainable results when we gang-up to reach a wider spectrum of markets. There are actual leg-works to be done…..apart from passion.

  24. Hi Wai Jin

I’ve migrated our ‘exchange’ to this thread which is more relevant to our topic. Are u living near the super prata shop at Casuarina rd? Would like to meet there but…the locale is generally not convenient.

The monthly meeting usually takes place from 4p.m. – 9p.m. I think we can meet from 2.30 – 4.30p.m, thus avoiding the evening rush hours.

Can you come to Serangoon MRT? – From Bishan MRT, transfer to Circle line (S’goon stn is 2 stn away). We can meet at Republic food court at NEX, basement 2. or we can meet at Bishan MRT.

    How?
