  1. Hi Terence,

My favourite Kway Teow stall in sea view coffee shop in sea park. Maybe you can bring your friends there. See hum (cockles) is optional. Hope your friends like it.

Friend recommended Seng Lee Restaurant, Jln Batai, Damansara Heights. Also famous for the pork noodles. At the entrance/road side, a famous rojak stall. Havent tried the food there. Would love yr feedback!

    Happy eating!

  3. Lin, Yoke Lai and Winnie,

I was stucked for ideas when my Malaysian friends tried to test my knowledge of KL/PJ food. So, I mentioned Char Kway Teow with cockles, which is my favourite in Malaysiaq. Now, I can show off a bit, with your recommendations. I am going up next week, and shall feedback on taste and convenience.

It’s great to get help, when one runs short of ideas. Thank you.

  4. Hi Terence,

I do frequent PJ/KL personally and would recommend you to drop by @ RESTORAN SAY HUAT (Robert’s Char Kway Teow) located within Petaling Jaya @ Stall No:1083, Jalan 17/29. The owner (Robert) only charge RM5.00 for a normal plate of Kway Teow that comes with a decent serving of fresh cockles, bean sprouts & fish cakes, you can pay an extra RM1.00 for more cockles if you prefer..

Have fun on your food trail!

Yes – they serve very good char keow teow and the chef are from Penang. I think they are Close on Sunday.

There is another one at AMK – Jubilee Sq

I do agree that Penang Place in One North serves really good kway teow! Used to frequent it very often before they moved to One North.
You can ask the Chef to cook a plate for you – additional cockles too!
    Happy scouting for kway teow!

  7. Hi Terence,

Steven Chan gave me this tip the last time I went to KL.

Go to Jalan Imbi, stop at the Overseas Restaurant, (there for over 50 years already). You can eat there if you want to, much cheaper than the same Overseas Restaurant in Beach Rd here. Otherwise cross the road opposite the Oveseas Restt, there is a road leading towards Jalan Barat. Before reaching Jalan Barat, the road splits into two, left and right. The left leads to a well-known Bak Kut Teh restaurant, and the right leads to a corner coffeeshop with a zichar stall there.

Try to zichar stall. If not to your liking, walk down to Jalan Barat and there will be other zichar stalls there, selling the famous KL ‘black noodle’ or ‘noodles in black sauce’. Unfortunately they all use the thick udon noodles to replace the old yellow mee. But many KL residents still swear by that place.

The ‘wok hei’ technique in the first zichar coffeeshop is very good.

Next morning for breakfast, you can still go to the same place, but along Jalan Imbi, there is a corner coffeeshop with many different stalls selling noodles, porridge, nonya cakes for your breakfast.

If you like the recommendation, remember to thank Steven Chan for this tip. I was there and can still remember the fried beehoon and large prawns they cooked for me.

  8. Hi Kenneth and everybody who contributed to the Char Kway Teow hunt,

I am back from Kota Kinabalu today and will be back to PJ on monday. Will give a review of the cockles too when I am back on Wed.

  9. Hi Kenneth and everybody who gave me tips on the best Char Kway Teow in PJ,

I was a PJ last week, and after I had done what I wanted to do, we went to look for the recommendations by Yoke Lai and Susan. My friend said I was crazy, after having got stuck with the traffic jams. He said there is good Char Kway Teow, all over Malaysia. Sorry Ladies, I could not find your recommendations, but we landed up at a Kopitiam and they served a beautiful white Char Kway Teow, with a piece of leaf below the Kway Teow. It wasnt sweet, and smells great. But, the cockles are so tiny; but chewy. Dont think I can find the shop again. Thank you.
